  • Learn the Thermal Stitch and crochet a thick potholder. This stitch is fabulous to use for thick projects, like potholders and coasters, to protect yourself or your furniture from heat or cold. I’ll take you through each step of crocheting a nice, thick potholder, including starting, continuing and finishing the potholder all while learning how to make the Thermal Stitch.
While filming this video, I decided to put together my own free pattern for you to download and follow along with me in the video, since I changed Heather’s free pattern slightly. Heather works her hanging loop at the beginning of Row 1 and I work it at the beginning of the last row (the slip stitch row). I’m following my version of the thermal stitch potholder, since that’s my preferred method of doing the hanging loop.
You could also eliminate the hanging loop to make a hot pad instead of a potholder. Just turn your work without chaining and work a slip stitch in each stitch across, like I demonstrate near the end of the video.
And if you’d like to crochet some thermal stitch coasters, simply work less foundation chains, stitches in each row and number of rows. You should be able to get 3-4 coasters from one skein of worsted weight cotton yarn, depending on the size of the skein.
If you're ready to take thermal stitch to the next level, try my Tapestry Thermal Stitch patterns! These combine Thermal Stitch with Tapestry Crochet to create fabulous designs on your Thermal Stitch potholders (yes, you can make different designs on each side of your potholder!).
