  • After 'Halloween III: Season Of The Witch' took a sharp left turn that damaged the legendary h*rr*r franchise nearly beyond repair, it was clear to the studio what needed to be done: The Return of Michael Myers. Over the next eight years, Halloween 4, 5 and 6 would create a brand new mythology for our beloved Shape, known today as 'The Thorn Trilogy.' Series staples like John Carpenter, Debra Hill and Jamie Lee Curtis had all exited the franchise, and under nearly a dozen new writers, directors and studios, Halloween was about to undergo a massive shift.
Could Michael Myers be brought back in a way that audiences would accept? Would Danielle Harris' new character, Jamie Lloyd, be eaten alive by bloodthirsty moviegoers? Is it even possible to give the answers to the looming questions surrounding Michael Myers and his evil ways without completely ruining his mystique? We'll cover all that and more right here in 'The History Of Halloween Part III - The Thorn Trilogy.'

“What in Sam Hell is going on with Michael’s mask?” Obviously, he was paying tribute to the murdered Ben Tramer from Halloween II, WHO HAS STILL NOT GOTTEN JUSTICE AFTER ALL THESE YEARS! I for one, applaud Michael for attempting to preserve the memory of Mr. Tramer.

I too love Halloween 4, flaws and all. For a long time, it was my "white noise movie" that I'd play when I went to sleep every night. Halloween 5 is pretty ponderously bad without many redeeming qualities. The Myers mask is terrible, making Jamie a mute in a hospital is bad, killing off Rachel and giving us more disposable teens that you KNOW Michael will chop up is bad, and goddamn TINA is annoyingly bad. Halloween 6 is bad, but the behind-the-scenes drama of its production and the emergence of the Producer's Cut make it a very intriguing piece of horror movie lore. Like observing a car wreck on the side of the road, you know it's bad but you're attracted to it by a morbid curiosity. Also, the H6 Myers mask looks awesome and one of my favorite masks in the series. It looks like it's made of stone or granite, as ancient and immovable as the force powering Michael.

I also disliked that they killed off Rachel so unceremoniously and right in the first half of the film. I thought Rachel should have survived, at least until the end if not the whole story arc.

    Here's how I'd write Halloween 5:
If we *must* have Michael return as the killer, then his survival would not be explained. We would see the shooting and maybe the explosion (it's a bit unnecessary). However, much like the characters themselves, we would be left to wonder how he survived and why he won't just die.
Jamie killed her *foster* mom. No half-assed retconns or tap dancing around consequences. Jamie is in an asylum for crazed children because she's a murderer. There's no telepathic link between her and Michael, because that's stupid. Jamie merely acted on a psychosis planted in her mind from the traumatic experience of Michael trying to kill her.
Rachel is not bubbly, she's not happy, and she definitely does not visit Jamie in the asylum. Rachel resents Jamie for what she did. And struggles knowing that she sacrificed so much, facing down death itself to save a strange girl she hardly knew, and who would ultimately bring her and her family nothing but grief. Her mother, her boyfriend, and her father (who killed himself over his wife's death) would all be alive if she had just let Michael do what he came to do.
Doctor Loomis has returned to Smith's Grove where he keeps a close eye on Jamie. Occasionally asking her assigned psychiatrist, Doctor Bailey (new character) if he can interview Jamie with her oversight (he can't be alone with a girl he tried to shoot). Loomis learns here that Jamie has no memory of what she did, and is seemingly normal and functioning, and only asks why her big sister won't visit her. Loomis knows these aren't the symptoms that Michael possessed as a child, and that perhaps Jamie was just another victim of him, having her life ruined like all the other people he's hurt. Maybe whatever evil drives Michael infected Jamie for just long enough to get her put away to a location familiar to Michael, where she would be alone and intentionally isolated from the town that was able to stop him the last time.
Rachel, bitter and resentful, hesitantly joins a group of townspeople in Haddonfield who think the best course for the town is to hand Jamie over to Michael. It's they who throw the rock in Jamie's window. Only with a slightly different letter attached. Maybe we get a shot of Jamie looking out the window and seeing Rachel, her sister whom she hasn't seen in almost a year, and she's outside looking up at her just as the Shape would.
The Shape returns, as always immediately starts killing people. He begins with Sheriff Meeker, whom he kills after a tense fight where Meeker actually does some damage to Michael, but ultimately loses. Here Michael learns what happened to Jamie.
(I won't detail any kills as I'm more focused on the overall narrative)
News of Meeker's death spreads, and Rachel and her new friends know who is responsible. So they go out to Smith's Grove. There they meet one of their own: Doctor Bailey. She was a friend of Rachel's mother and encouraged her to foster Jamie after Laurie Strode's death. Like Rachel she carries guilt over what that choice led to. She hands Jamie over to them and they take her to the Myer's house (which is not some vampire's summer home but an actual middle class house). Loomis sees this and follows.
At the Myer's house, they prepare to hand Jamie over. Rachel is having a harder and harder time going through with it. As she is realizing that Jamie is not like her uncle, something she would have seen had she ever visited her. Loomis arrives and is able to convince Rachel to save Jamie, to save her little sister. He tells her that Jamie is not an agent of the Shape, they are. He made Jamie do what she did, but Rachel, Doctor Bailey and the others are choosing to give Michael exactly what he wants. And that killing Jamie won't stop him, he'll win, and then he'll find another.
Rachel frees Jamie, and with Loomis' help they flee into the basement as the Shape has arrived and is preventing their escape. The Shape rampages through the house, killing Doctor Bailey and all the other vigilantes, knocking over candles that start a fire. In the basement he finds Loomis between him and the girls. Loomis draws his gun, and shoots Michael six times, putting him on the ground and giving Jamie and Rachel the chance to escape. Loomis tells Rachel to take Jamie and flee, go far away and never come back, tell no one of where they're going.
As they leave, Loomis uses his body weight against the door to trap a weakened Michael in the basement. He sits there and says, "It's time, Michael." And waits, as the fire consumes both of them, and the house itself.
    *The End*
That's my rough draft for Halloween 5, it conflicts with my idea for Halloween 6 but I won't get into that. Apologies for any typos, and I hope it was good.

I had the double pack of part 4 and 5 dvd and even though I’d turn off part 5 about 30 minutes in I always got in the mood to throw it in. Maybe it’s just because the cookie woman line is so terrible that it’s my favorite line in the franchise.
I always wanna say on a personal note, it’s awesome to see you do some horror. A very good friend of mine showed me my first horror film, Halloween 2, when we were 9. Since then we’ve always talked horror and would throw on a film whenever we hungout. About 2 1/2 years ago I came out to him as trans and he ended our friendship over it. He was the only person in my life who loved horror and I’ve missed being able to talk to him about it. Great job with the vid Ian! This part of the Halloween franchise certainly has its ups and downs for sure. I loved the 4th one, even with its mishaps. 5, I think most will agree with you on your thesis. I personally found the man in black intriguing. When its revealed at the end he breaks him out of prison and we are left us with that cliff hanger for 6 years, that was crazy. During this time where Michael had just up and disappeared, I heard many rumors as to what happened to him, my favorite being he was captured and sent to space. I thought that was a crazy idea and made no sense. Little did I know with the same description of this potential sequel, it would be realized in Jason x. I honestly prefer the producer's cut of 6. Some of the story choices are not very good but this version feels more like Halloween than the theatrical version. There's also a director's cut of the film but hasn't been released, officially or unofficial asi far as I know. 4's opening scene is out of this world. It captures that true Halloween vibe but only referring to the movie but over all. I look forward to your next installment and when the retrospective is compete and it's available to watch them all in one sitting! 👊

I’ve always like 4 and 5 too! The older I get the more I can see all of 5’s screw ups and as a big fan of the franchise as a whole, it really does frustrate me. However, I love Jamie and her story. I feel like they could’ve tied it off Aly better and I really wish (like most ppl do ab their fav franchises) that creativity and the sake of the story would’ve trumped over everything else. I still really do like the movies tho. 4 is my favorite next to the original.

Halloween 5 was my very first Halloween film. As a kid I was obsessed with it. I loved the Jamie Michael connection and that he could be pulled from his evil by the power of his niece (very anime). I also liked the fact that the man in black was essentially Michael’s guardian. I think they could have gone much further (and better) with this storyline.
It’s only as an adult I see how awful the film is in and of itself 😂😂😂 It’ll always have a soft spot in my heart though.

On a side note, Reverend Jackson P. Sayer, despite only having the one scene in Halloween 4, is among my favorite tertiary characters in the entire franchise. His scene is one of my favorites in that arena as well. I have always wanted to see some kind of backstory on him, as he seems like there is a hell of a story to be told. I know that he sticks around a little while longer in the novelization, and that he becomes one of the only people in the franchise to meet Michael face to face and live, though he doesn't walk away without being wounded.

Othenin-Girard has been just about the ONLY man to come along who actually understood what made the original what it was. The only sequel that's even in the same class as 5 is Halloween 2, and I don't know how much of that film was Rosenthal and how much was Carpenter. There's no such confusion over Halloween 5. Othenin-Girard centered it RELENTLESSLY around the elements that made the '78 classic so special. Halloween 5 is forged on the stalking sequences, and cat-and-mouse scenarios, that were the backbone of the original.

Wow Ian, like always awesome video. When I saw all of these films my emotions went to disappointment to straight up furious. After finishing watching the previous movie and going to the next hoping it will get better. Man was I wrong it just got way worst. Halloween 4 The Return Of Michael Myers was indeed a good movie, I did like it. It was interesting how the daughter would go similar horror path being chased by pure evil event. Though, it suck to learn that Laurie Strode had died and left her daughter Jamie Lloyd behind. I've asked myself did Jamie knew about her mother's trauma event past and her uncle being a psychopath killer. In a way I felt like I saw that idea, but it felt scatter around. Maybe that's why she had the nightmares and when it came to the ending did meant that Jamie would become evil. I did worry that Jaimie would become evil like her uncle. As we know that theory didn't go on the next film, only causing Jamie to go mute and traumatize. Halloween 5 The Revenge Of Michael Myers was an awful movie and I really did hate it. I was beyond furious and heartbroken when Rachel got killed off all because the director didn't like the character. Like hello she was a bad ass in the last film, she went to great length to protect Jamie and lets not forget she ran over Michael Myers with a truck. Yeah the director really fucked off on this movie from changing the Myers home to an unmasked Michael Myers's face not being burn. All the director's choices were ridiculous. Halloween The Curse Of Michael Myers, don't know where to start with this movie. When I watched this movie many times I asked myself when did this slasher genre turn to supernatural. There was Jamie who was alive, held captive for years, and pregnant with her uncle's child. Yeah, I still don't want to think how that happen. Though, I was sad that Jamie had died and seeing the end of her story. About the situation towards The Men In Black and The Cult were they trying to make Michael Myers immortal. This to me felt questionmarks all over, I just don't know anymore. I did like that Tommy Doyle reappear, but not what I expected only to find he was obsessed of chasing a killer. So, yeah these are my thoughts towards the movies.

41:47 Too be fair, that script was FUCKING AWFUL because Jamie not only has psychic powers, but also telekinetic powers like Tina in F13 Part 7 and SO DOES MICHAEL!!! Who at one point multiplies himself to 16 clones of himself to tick Loomis and Jamie. Dr. Loomis is also the villain who's trying to kill Jamie until she just hugs him and he changes his mind. The script also features a jock who's basically like Dan in Nightmare 4 and a lot of the script felt very Freddy including the way Jamie defeats Michael by saying "I don't believe in you!" And Michael turns into a hundred knives and when they take off his mask, he's turned into a little boy. (Yeah, basically a Jason Takes Manhattan ending. Are you serious!?!) Loomis does and the writer of the script said he hated the character because he was a overused character and after Michael's defeated, Jamie is driven by the jock and she kills him at the end, and it ends exactly where Halloween 4 ended with nothing to learn for Jamie whatever. They basically just started back from the beginning. And I can see why Akkad didn't like the script because it would've been terrible.
