Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, I'm your host Paul and this video we're breaking down Batman Returns.

Now incase you missed our last video, there I talked about how I grew up with Batman 89. My mum basically taped it off the tv but would stop recording everytime it got violent. So I had a sort of cut up version of the film and though I still loved it, I didn't get the full version of it until many years later.
On the other side of it this was the actual official VHS my mum and dad got me. Which...yeah at 5 years old might not have been the best thing looking back.
However I was absolutely in love with this film as a kid and I've lost count of how many times I've watched it. This was the Batman that raised me and I can't wait to journey back through it.
So come with me as we break down the movie and talk about all the hidden details within it. This will cover the easter eggs and making of trivia and basically everything you need to know about the movie.
With that out the way, thank you for clicking this, now let's get into Batman Returns.

So the title Returns is of course a staple within film franchises. Beyond that though it's also a big part of Batman's history. When they originally were pitching Batman they used Frank Millers Dark Knight Returns as a basis to demonstrate the tone. This was a time in which Batman was seen as camp due to the 66 tv show and the word Returns also played into some of the scripts.

I remember seeing this in theater when I was a kid. It was the biggest movie for us that year. We even got the McDonald's toys before they pulled them for it not being a "kids" movie. Lol. The penguin duck mobile with the umbrella on the front was my favorite.😅
Same! We had a McDonald’s plastic cup from that time of Bruce Wayne and Selena dancing at Shrek’s party. My parents had no problem taking 10 year old me to see this movie and it was so exciting.
Watching this a few years ago. The scene where Selina comes home after the fall. The part where she takes the spray paint to the doll house really got me. In particular the part where she makes a point to spray paint the bed of the doll house black. It's very telling and stunning storytelling through imagery and behavior.
Batman Returns is still my favourite out of ALL the Batman films. So much fun and so iconic! Great video ❤

Despite what people say and much like Die Hard, it's also a Christmas flick too. It should have come out during the Xmas period back then.

1) I was a nutcase Batman fan after the 89 film and “collected” Batman $hit. Thanks, parents. I don’t know how you coped with that. 2) The toys were weird because, as mentioned, the film wasn’t super kid-friendly!!
Batman: The Animated Series score during the opening introduction was inspired by Batman Returns. A lot of the musical score from Batman: The Animated Series conducted by the late Shirley Walker were inspired by the first 2 Burton Batman films. David Lea was the lead stunt double for Michael Keaton who helped Keaton in preparation for the role of Batman. Keaton said he had to learn kickboxing for the role. David Lea also went on to appear in Family Matters fighting Steve Urkel as Bruce Lee with the late Jason David Frank appearing as another goon who was the Green, White, Zeo Ranger V, Turbo and Dino Thunder ranger. One of the episodes in Batman: The Animated Series "The Mechanic" with The Penguin hijacking the Batmobile was because of Batman Returns where you see The Penguin hijacking Batman's batmobile for his own amusement. The last conversation I had with David Lea was via email.

Don't blame Burton for supposedly hiding under a desk. If I refused a meeting with someone, and they jumped in a private jet with a PR firm to bully me into hiring them for a role I didn't want them in....
It’s a shame that Tim Burton and Michael Keaton never got to do their trilogy. I still believe they should be allowed to do it Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman Keaton as Batman, and Billy Dee Williams has two face and Jim Carrey is the Riddler under the direction of Tim Burton?
As a kid we didnt have a car walked 3miles in the snow to go see this. This movie is quite the memory for me.
Between Batman 89 and Batman Returns, I think this is the better movie. Jack Nicholson as Joker was perfect, but I think Devito's Penguin was just as iconic, and Pfeifer 's Catwoman is still the best live action interpretation of the character BY FAR.
Also, late 80s, early90s movies like Bettlejuice, Batman Returns, and Addams Family absolutely gave young me a lifelong attraction to goth girls and girls with a darker, more sardonic personality.
You’re not wrong about Catwoman. I was about 12 when this came out and WHOA. By FAR!! I’ll fight you on Penguin though. This was a RADICAL change from what he was before. That’s fine, but I distinctly remember thinking he was just pretty gross. And didn’t offer much more. That’s me. It’s actually thrilling to hear the character has other fans though because it took away my interest in the character literally until the new show. Which I’m still shocked I like so much.

I hate to correct you. There were plenty of cds around at the time. There was a limited collectors release of the Prince album on cd that came in a very cool metal tin.
Everytime I watch the penguin death scene it makes me cry.
With every amazing breakdown, We’re growing closer and closer to bat nips and the Batman credit card…. Never leave the cave without it! This movie brings back so many memories, Do u remember those trading cards for Batman during the 90s? It was tied to the comics and the show but this reminds me of when I was a kid, my dad and I would collect those Batman cards until he passed. Still got em to this day. Another killer breakdown brother keep em coming!!! 🤘🔥

I vividly remember how hyped I was for this sequel. Pt 1 came out when I was 9 or 10 and so I was about 12/13 when this was coming out in 92. The notion of it happening in winter cold was a nice change and the posters in movie theaters featured each character close up. Penguin, Bats and Catwoman. It’s hard these days to make people watch these movies. They’re def not as amazing as they were in 1990 - Action and costumes have advanced far. But nostalgia be damned, I’ll never forget these films. Thx for the thorough breakdown.
The fact that they got Paul Reubins to play the penguin's fatger in the Gotham Show was a great reference, too.

One of my earliest memories involves this movie. We were visiting my great grandmother in a nursing home, and someone bought me Batman Returns trading cards.
Another little reference: the iron torture chamber in Bruce’s house is the same one they had later in Sleepy Hollow.

Perfect timing, I just rewatched it the other day in preparation for your breakdown. Hope you cover the animated series at some point as it really is an important part of Batman media.
At the time, Paul Rubens was on the outs after his TV show was canceled, so giving him a part in the movie was very nice of Tim Burton.
I really enjoyed this breakdown and I love this movie. The Grease movie reference was perfect since Michelle was in Grease 2. I wish you had mentioned the infamous kiss Catwoman gives Batman. I remember it being nominated for MTV Video awards for best kiss.

The Tree Lighting Ceremony was for Gotham's rich. The Mayor and his goons were there among other elites, so, surely the rich have already been ravaged, even before the Maxquerade Ball?
I love how that’s basically all of Gotham. Every exterior shot is in that square with Shrek’s dept store behind. And there were - what? - 50 total people there?
@@DylanMadd Yes, because the (fascist) cops were closing off the streets, presumably to stop the poor/minorities from getting in (do you see many POC in this film?) I have other theories why few people turned up. They were all busy working whilst the elites could afford to attend these events, and a lot of them were boycotting the event (kind of like certain Presidential inaugerations over the years) for various reasons.

I love how as a kid I was shocked when the Animated Series came out after seeing Batman and Batman Returns, I was like "The Joker is alive!? What?? The Penguin!? I thought he died!?" Ahh the innocence of childhood and not knowing that all the media created for a series doesn't always intertwine lol. Right after my sister took me to see this movie we went to a toy store and I got the Batman spinner gun and the Batman bat-bolo shield action figure... Good times....

I lost my mom when i was 9 and my grandmother harassed my dad over me so bad that we left to get away from her and she sold our trailer out from under us.. it took me years to get a portion of my things (things my parents got for me that i treasured.. Batman returns was one of those things)
When i asked my aunt for the vhs she told she tossed it and why.. 11yr old me was furious because it wasn't hers to watch much less throw away😠

I still haven't seen these movies and I am a big Batman fan, I feel like a fraud. My Batman is Akrahm Btman from the video games and of course, the Dark Knight. I never found it necessary to go back and watch the classics. I've seen the nipple Batman so I assumed the others would be just as bad. I think I've seen a few scenes from Batman Returns because I remember The Penguin but I was really young.

Yeah the first two are definitely worth watching, even if they might feel dated by today's films, they're still good fun
I JUST commented on how hard it is to make people sit down and watch these. They drag, and there really isn’t much action, Batman can’t move or fight in the suit. It’s where all the jokes about not being able to move his head came from.
All that said, Batman 89 was my intro to the character and carried me pretty far. Check them out but don’t be shocked if you still feel weird saying they’re not great. Nostalgia is very powerful, mostly because when this is where film was, there was no other choice. You couldn’t say, “I don’t like it so I’ll go watch Marvel.” It was literally this or the 1970s/1980s Superman movies. Which is 1 reason people of a certain age insist they’re great films.

Dent's face was supposed to be messed up after the cat woman kiss with electricity.
The eye makeup gaffe, I always found funny, but what bothered me in that scene was always Bruce's cowl just tearing like it's made of Fruit Roll-Ups or Laffy Taffy or something. Seems pretty weak for an armored suit.
When I think Batman, I think dark, gothic fantasy. That is why Batman Returns is my favorite of all the live action movies. I hope James Gunn moves away from 'realistic' Batman and embraces the fantastical elements from the comics
The scene where Batman sticks the explosives into the "Strong Man"s" pants... This is the major character that goes against Sylvester Stallone in the movie "Over the Top".... The explosives were a bit "over the top" maybe? lmbo
Michelle Pfeiffer will always be "THE" Catwomen for me but I must say, Zoe Kravitz really rocked that character in The Batman

Not a big fan of any of the 90s Batman films, but I do think returns is the best of them and a fun watch.
I remember having the cat woman happy meal toy. She was a staple in my bathtub toys. I was 5-6 when it came out.

Love this movie as well... Seen it an opening weekend and initially thought it was 'ok'. Repeated viewings on VHS changed my stance - I flip, flop if I prefer it over '89. I still have my Gotham City McDonalds banner I acquired from my buddy who worked there around this food campaign.
One thing to note, you mentioned the Triangle Gang abducting the kids being filmed (wasn't aware of that) but there's a fight scene that was filmed on the Gangs return to the train. A still is out there showing clowns incapacitated in the back and foreground of the train. (I never cared for the way the film handled this and much prefer another fight scene.) It's a shame Returns release is devoid of deleted material or commentary with a little background on the matter.
