I'll never forget when I saw this back in -89, opening night. The guy at the theater told me and my friend that we were too young to see this but my dad went and bought the tickets to all of us. People were wearing Batman hats, shirts and had pasted stickers on their clothes. The audience went nuts and cheered when Keaton said "tell all your friend I'm Batman", that was something that I haven't ever seen in a Finnish theater. Cosplay and movie fandom etc wasn't a thing until maybe 15-20 years later.
I totally agree the casting of Young Joker was perfect. He's only onscreen for a few seconds, but dang, he nailed it. Also, Bob's death was the most unfair part of this film for me, even as a kid. He did not deserve that betrayal. Justice for Bob!

After this film, a life long Batman fan was born and I had so much Batman merchandise in that era, it was unbelievable. I eventually was at the theater on opening weekend for Batman Returns, Batman Forever and sigh......Batman and Robin.
I come from a small town in New Zealand. As a boy, my dad’s best friend’s brother, was a cameraman on this movie (amongst others). He had no kids at the time, so sent a VHS copy to his nephews to watch before it was released in Cinemas, anywhere in the world. I'm not trying to shoot holes in your story but how did he get a vhs copy 4 months before the film was transferred to vhs? Unless he had access to the final cut of the film, wich would have been completed long after principle photography (his job) had wrapped. In addition to unsurpervised access to a Telecine machine; a device that converts celluloid film to vhs and cost around a quarter million dollars at the time. I mean, I know y'all Kiwis are a wild bunch, but this story needs a little more explanation.
@@williamdixon-gk2sk I know that by the mid-80's, it wasn't uncommon for studios to have VHS cuts of either the release print or the pre-neg-cut edit assembly floating around so that stuff could get approved internally. It's how we have VHS assembly edits of a lot of films (e.g. the rough assembly of ALIEN3 was from a pilfered VHS copy for the studio execs to watch). Also, I feel Batman never directly killed The Joker. He shot a boa rope, attaching his foot to the stone gargoyle statue to keep The Joker from leaving. The chopper however kept taking off even with a goon looking down the rope but not adapting to the situation because, he's a dumb goon trying to replace the "Number One Guy" that Joker keeps killing after a mistake lol. However, he couldn't have known the Joker wouldn't try to stay near the statue, or that the statue would crumble and give way under his weight. Or that the chopper would continue to take off. He probably thought the cowardice Joker would retreat to the statue to try to untie the grapple rope. Anyway, between the statue giving way, the chopper still trying to escape with a tied down Joker and Joker not trying to go back down the rope to the statue before the chopper got too far away, I think that this death was circumstantial and not a direct murder/killing from Batman.
Man, I subscribed to this channel when “The Bat-Man” was first being reported on and you were the only one doing it. So it’s almost like I’ve went full circle. Keep up the great work
That always drove me nuts. That trilogy continuously hammers home Batman's "one rule" but he killed all the people in the temple, Ra's al Ghul, Harvey Dent and it's implied that many more cops/bad guys/civilians are seriously hurt or killed during the numerous batmobile/tank/batcycle/batcopter chases. At least Keaton's Batman made no excuses for his killings.
@@OscarASevilla lol that's still murder. If you drive towards a brick wall at full speed and jump out before impact without getting your passenger out, you're responsible for that passenger's death. He purposely crashed the train and left Ra's on it. That whole "I don't have to save you" excuse of his is nonsense haha

Teleprompter use in old news segments was a thing but to my knowledge, the paper was still used as a backup if it malfunctioned and was the main way to read news if the news were new. This is portrayed in many movies with the newsreader being handed a paper to read. Pretty sure the programming of the teleprompter was not as easy and fast as nowdays with all the computers. One famous instance with malfunctioning teleprompter is the Bill O'Reilly "Do It Live" Meltdown...
@JohnnyNoPockets I don't know... an angry and depressed loner who dresses like a bat and spends every night stalking criminals, wakes up late in his mansion and has to wear sunglasses indoors because he never sees the sun... He is new on the job and doesn't realize that Bruce Wayne has to be the philanthropist businessman-- which he learns in the first movie. I thought it was actually a good origin story, and R-Pat made him feel real to me. IMO
I was three years old when I saw this movie with my dad in theaters, and I fell in love with the idea of Batman. A hero with no powers that wasn't afraid to fight criminals. My dad got me the Bat plane and Batmobile as late birthday gifts, I was born in May and this movie came out in June, still have both and will never part with those toys until I have a son. I also own every version of the movie from VHS to Blu-ray. Thank you Tim Burton and Michael Keaton for giving me a hero to look up to!
1989 my family went to Croatia for 12 weeks, and I purchased the ‘Death in the Family’ to read during the flight and as enjoyable as the trip was I couldn’t wait to return to see Batman in theatres. There was only a few land lines on the island village & stood in queue at their Post Office and I called a few times to ask my cousins for details about the movie. I couldn’t wait to leave our vacation, and get back to Canada to see this flick. Was not disappointed.
What?! Harrison Ford as Bruce Wayne, Michael J Fox as Robin, Tim Curry as Joker. There's an alternate universe where this movie exists and I wont be able to get it out of my head now, but I'm also kind of glad i dont live in it 😂
back in 89 when this came out i was 14 and had to blag my way into the cinema to watch it with it being a 15 rated movie, i know you're a geordie i grew up in washington and went to the old flea pit in concord to watch it once i'd got in the 1st time i went back every night after school it cost 75p to get in, my 1st exposure to batman was also the 66 tv show so to see this version it blew my mind and it still does, this film truly brilliant there's no other way to describe it
I really appreciate that you take your time to break down older films and media and that it isn’t just about what’s hot and relevant for the channel, so much art has been released in the last that deserve a light shed on them like this video here so thank you very much
When i was a kid watching this a thought it was meant to be the 40s or 50s (i was very young so couldn't grasp it was meant to be timeless). I was confused when i watched Batman Returns because Batman used a CD to play Penguin's "i played this stinking city like a harp from hell". He should have used a gramophone.
came here after watching your batman returns retrospective. these are quality videos and your passion for the project really shines through. i grew up on these burton/keaton batman films too, but i became an electrician out of high school. i do my best work in the dark and while im no multimillionaire, i have tools for every occasion sorted neatly across several vehicles. i’m batman.
I feel like I know most facts about the movie, but I still learned something new from this video. The mugger wearing the same shirt as the kid was profound, and the aftershave literally having the Joker on it was hilarious
This was an excellent breakdown. You share more of less exactly my memories / love of this movie and I was amazed how many nuggets that were new to me, even after I’ve been obsessed with this thing and the lore behind it’s making for 35 years. Well done @heavyspoilers , looking forward to your RETURNS one now!
You are incorrect at the 54:00 mark where you say its a statue at the end of the Batman 89 movie. That was in fact Carl Newman who was the movement double for Keaton in many of the iconic moments of that movie. This was one of his first scenes he filmed for the movie, some better research would have been good to avoid this error.
47:15 It always cracked me up when one of the arguments against Ben Affleck's Batman was that the Batmobile had guns and he killed people. I would tell them to go back and watch Batman '89, especially the part where Batman absolutely blows up an entire factory full of workers after shooting up the place with the Batmobile.
Thought your ad but was a suicidal tendencies reference for a second. "mom, just get me a Pepsi, all I wanted was a Pepsi and she wouldn't give it to me!"
One of my absolute favorite movies, and definetly favorite Batman! In this particular movie I love how he behaves and the look of the suit. And Batman is the real him, Bruce Wayne is the mask. The music, the general artwork, ... just an amazing movie!
I feel like the Batmobile not hitting him is also referenced in the Arkham games. Whenever you call the it to you, Batman will always jump up and get into it as well. Later, in Arkham Knight you will also notice that you cannot run him over with the car either. Almost as if they were trying to say, "yeah Batman is NOT going to be hit by his vehicle." lol
Yes!! Paul, you are one of my favorite RUclipsr's I love your coverage of media, and you have a great narrating voice, also your corny jokes are pretty funny (to me). Keep up the good work, man! Sadly, I'm not a fan of the other people's coverage on RUclips, I have nothing against them but their stuff isn't nearly as good as yours. It's like watching a different channel almost. Helps as well that we're close in age, you're like 4-5 years younger than me. So I can't relate to all the jokes you make as well. What's cool is politically, we likely aren't on the exact same page, but I would definitely get along with you in real life because you seem like a chill guy who would respect everyone's beliefs. As far as the design of the Bat Suit in this movie, it's iconic but it just makes me chuckle when he turns his whole body side to side while changing his view. I can't help but laugh at how funny he looks doing that. This movie was such a classic overall. Ironically, despite seeing this in Theaters as a really young kid, I probably have watched this the least of any Batman movie. I have watched the Nolan trilogy more than any other movies; I easily have watched those movies a dozen or more times each (especially Dark Knight). I've only watched the Robert Pattinson movie once, I've seen Forever about a dozen times, Batman & Robin 5-6 times, and Returns 2-3 times.
Yeah the suit looks so good but some of the turns are hilarious. Surprised he even managed to fight in it. He does this roll that then goes into a stand and it looks so slick but I dunno how they did it in that get up.
You mentioned Porkins (William Hootkins) as Lt. Eckhrdt, but Biggs (Garrick Hagon) is also in the movie. Hagon played the dad who gets knocked out by the muggers at the beginning.
When Bruce enters Vicki's apartment, he says, "Nice place, lots of space." Then when Jack comes in, he says the exact same thing. This indicates that Bruce and Jack think similarly - two halves of a whole.
Ummm you missed a big easter egg. The laughing box in the bag, also makes an appearance in “The Flash “ movie. The Barry’s find it in the bat cave. Surprise you missed that one mate ! Other than that top marks barv !
I was a young Airmain attending electronics/radar training at Biloxi AFB in Biloxi MS, when this came out. There was so much hype around this coming out. There was one theater in the training triangle of the base, and going to see this was my one and only genuine block-buster experience. I literally was standing in a line that wrapped around the corner of the block where the theater was located. Great experience, great movie.
This movie made me a huge Batman fan. It was 3 when I came out and I still remember seeing it in theatre's. To me still the best Batman film to date. Appreciate you for making this video.
Where did you get that the CIA file came from the vault at Axis Chemicals? I went back to rewatch that part thinking I missed something, but the vault is empty outside of a few manila folders. Also, that final shot isn’t a statue. I had also thought that it was for years. It’s actually Carl Newman who was Keaton’s movement double in the Batsuit. He has spoken on multiple interviews of late about filming that last shot.
Also wasn’t the whole Axis scene a big setup for Jack? The empty safe essentially tipped him off to being set up by Grissom. I can’t imagine him leaving the CIA file in the safe when the whole point was to set up Jack and his men.
From all the things I've seen from the first Batman this is probably the first time I heard about the nerve gas angle makes a lot of sense thanks for bringing it to my attention.
Broooooo!!! I was 7 when this came out. Watched it countless times since. NEVER realized those suits in the trophy room represented Bruce Wayne's travel and training until this video. Holy crap I'm dense. You're gonna send me all the way back to 89 to rewatch every movie I've ever seen. Thanks. Literally.
I've been watching your videos for a while now but I think this is the first I've watched and seen your face. You seem to be having more fun here. I'm sure it is a bit freeing because you can use expressions to lighten the slick jokes and remarks. I dig it. Keep on keepin on brother. Show me the light bruddah
I am Canadian and I am shocked and appalled... with how accurately you described Vancouver in 1989! At least Downtown/East Vancouver at the time was very much a place to avoid. It was called "Canada's Skid Row" at the time, it still kind of is; but there is less danger involved now.
Great breakdown! Loved the Burton Batman movies as a kid, but I watched Batman Returns, more than Batman 1989. It did come out the year I was born, though. So that's a nice little plus for me.
The craziest alternate theory is that the Joker didn’t actually kill Batman’s parents and Batman just manifested it through his pursuit of the Joker during the movie. There is technically no concrete moment where it’s acknowledged because Joker just says “what are you talking about? I was a kid when I killed your parents.” And the infamous “dance with the devil” phrase. Obviously Burton explicitly acknowledged writing in the Joker being the killer but it’s still an interesting way to see the film.
Excellent breakdown...loved the shot in the face lol. Although Nicholson was a brilliant cast, it would have been very interesting to see Williams in the role. Batman Returns next please bro.
I was 3 when this movie dropped and I was obsessed with it. I remember my family randomly asking me over the next few years, “Hey, Blake, who are you?” I’m BATMAN 😏💪
Well here's the question. Would it be the "deadly knights" arc where they team up, or the full-on Batman vs. The Punisher we have all been debating over for decades?
fantastic share! i was 17 when “batman” came out and it really was a pop culture powerhouse. everyone talked about it and you got so much right. the easter eggs and added info are great and make me want to revisit the whole thing.

Saw this in theaters when i was 8. Blew my mind. Jack Nicholson had everyone rolling. I had Prince's Batdance cassette single too lol.
People forget Bale’s Batman began his journey by blowing up a temple full of people right after refusing to execute one criminal.
@@kruegerlives "I won't kill you, but I don't have to save you"
@@OscarASevilla lol that's still murder. If you drive towards a brick wall at full speed and jump out before impact without getting your passenger out, you're responsible for that passenger's death. He purposely crashed the train and left Ra's on it. That whole "I don't have to save you" excuse of his is nonsense haha
@kruegerlives ok but he wasn't driving the truck. Ras was............. you just want to hate all the little nuances because you marvel famboys really think you rule everything 😂
They didn't die.......... they all run away and out. But I guess the ninjas at the end are just bums ras paid 😂😂😂😂😂. It's a comic movie relax. You still got your spiderman movies that you "relate" to 😂
My favorite scene and line (Joker puts glasses on) "you wouldnt hit a guy with glasses would you?" WHAM!
"Never Rub Another Man's Rhubarb"
Paul this break down of my all time fav Batman film. You have knocked it out of the park yet again. Just perfect... 🤌🤌🤌
It’s been a long time since I’ve seen this version of Batman. I forgotten just how good Michael Keaton was in the role and how awesome Nicholson was as the joker. Thanks for the breakdown.
Yep I'm like the other members, I'll be watching this tonight now while at work running my crane. Great breakdown mate
Thanks mate
Teleprompter use in old news segments was a thing but to my knowledge, the paper was still used as a backup if it malfunctioned and was the main way to read news if the news were new. This is portrayed in many movies with the newsreader being handed a paper to read. Pretty sure the programming of the teleprompter was not as easy and fast as nowdays with all the computers.
One famous instance with malfunctioning teleprompter is the Bill O'Reilly "Do It Live" Meltdown...
Keaton understood what Bruce Wayne would really be like in real life more than ANYONE else who's ever played the role, until Pattinson.
IMO
I love this movie. I've seen it so many times, I can almost quote it word for word.
Same
Seeing the image of Robin Williams as The Joker made me instantly think he would've been great as Arthur Fleck Joker.
Agreed
In loving the channel more and more. Bringing in MT was an awesome bonus, and now all these older movie reviews are fantastic.
I feel like having the resources of a billionaire and being the world's greatest detective are a kind of a super power.
FINALLY!! I’ve been waiting for this Green Lantern breakdown all week!!!🔥🔥🔥
“Let’s get nuts post clarity face” 😂😂
There's an alternate universe where this movie exists and I wont be able to get it out of my head now, but I'm also kind of glad i dont live in it 😂
Mel Gibson was the first choice to play Bruce.
back in 89 when this came out i was 14 and had to blag my way into the cinema to watch it with it being a 15 rated movie, i know you're a geordie i grew up in washington and went to the old flea pit in concord to watch it once i'd got in the 1st time i went back every night after school it cost 75p to get in, my 1st exposure to batman was also the 66 tv show so to see this version it blew my mind and it still does, this film truly brilliant there's no other way to describe it
Great break down, now I have to watch this tonight
For me, the biggest flaw of Nolan's films is he never really got Gotham as a setting. He kinda tried in the first film and then let it go.
He should have used a gramophone.
came here after watching your batman returns retrospective. these are quality videos and your passion for the project really shines through.
i grew up on these burton/keaton batman films too, but i became an electrician out of high school. i do my best work in the dark and while im no multimillionaire, i have tools for every occasion sorted neatly across several vehicles.
i’m batman.
also, where did you get that shirt? that is a nice shirt.
Shirley Walker was amazing! RIP.
The settings, acting, directing, and Danny's soundtrack all worked perfectly. I saw it in theaters twice at age 10.
Where does he get these wonderful breakdowns?
❤
29:52 *Actually the joker makeup kept rubbing off on the coat, so they put purple paint on the coat to hide it. But then it rubbed off on his neck*
Amazing, you made Saturday morning!
Big trouble in little china please, or any movie by J carpenter.
Oh man I WOULD LOVE TO SEE BIG TROUBLE LITTLE CHINA!!!,
Thought your ad but was a suicidal tendencies reference for a second.
Ey thank you man, really kind of you to say and yeah I’m always down to talk to people
Yeah the suit looks so good but some of the turns are hilarious.
Hagon played the dad who gets knocked out by the muggers at the beginning.
so that's why I had that nagging feeling in the back of my head when I saw him at the beginning of the breakdown
When Bruce enters Vicki's apartment, he says, "Nice place, lots of space." Then when Jack comes in, he says the exact same thing. This indicates that Bruce and Jack think similarly - two halves of a whole.
I love the friendship and sportmanship of your channels!! Continue spreading these vibes!!!
Great video. I loved this movie when it came out. I still love it. Thanks!
Great breakdown. Brought back so many memories….. even thought over seen this like 20 times
Ummm you missed a big easter egg. The laughing box in the bag, also makes an appearance in “The Flash “ movie. The Barry’s find it in the bat cave. Surprise you missed that one mate ! Other than that top marks barv !
lol I’ve only seen the flash twice, totally forgot that was in it
10:37 definitely sounds like Shostakovich symphony #12 to me, though
You lot just of been incredibly busy recently especially with that fellowship of the Ring video, keep up the great work.
Thank you
🤣 😅 love that you pointed out that youthful beleif Batman dialogue was serious because of the straight faced delivery!
This was the first movie I ever saw in the theater. I remember during the previews, there was a Coca-Cola ad, featuring Michael Gough's, Alfred.
A great video essay. Thank you for making this and sharing it.
Fantastic video. Loved this film as a child VHS and even had the sticker book!
Still enjoy as an adult and passed onto my kids.
Thanks for this. Nice to have something cool to watch while waiting for Ryan's next video.
I saw this on opening night at the theatre. Still watch it every year around Christmas. Damn, the nostalgia. 🍺
This movie made me a huge Batman fan. It was 3 when I came out and I still remember seeing it in theatre's. To me still the best Batman film to date. Appreciate you for making this video.
So THAT'S why Bob was his #1 guy!
This film changed my life as well. It was a standard movie in my house growing up. Brilliant.
Enjoyed that. Looking forward to Batman Returns retrospective now. One for my favs.
@@miserableunoriginalYes, exactly.
From all the things I've seen from the first Batman this is probably the first time I heard about the nerve gas angle makes a lot of sense thanks for bringing it to my attention.
Great video! Thank you. Is it me or is the opening to the Batman theme similar to the opening of the song Cold by the Cure?
That Mr. Beast line was gold. Gold, Jerry, Gold!
Would love to see one of these breakdowns for Repo Men. I feel this is a great forgotten movie and I’d love to see your take on it!
Just discovered your channel. Your videos are superb, I can see a great deal of effort put in. Subd!
Outstanding breakdown. Thanks buddy!
Great video! Start to end
'89 logo is my FAVORITE. Love it.
I am Canadian and I am shocked and appalled... with how accurately you described Vancouver in 1989! At least Downtown/East Vancouver at the time was very much a place to avoid. It was called "Canada's Skid Row" at the time, it still kind of is; but there is less danger involved now.
Damn the Canadians found the vid 😪😓😓
Great collection of Batman comics!
Absolutely love the breakdowns
Great video my guy 🔥 🦇
Love the video. Good job brother.
I'm Canadian, and I love your videos.
What I need is a list for your Batman graphic novel collection.
I want to start building mine.
If only a Batman VS The Punisher bring back both Keaton and Lundgren.
Well here's the question. Would it be the "deadly knights" arc where they team up, or the full-on Batman vs. The Punisher we have all been debating over for decades?
It could be argued that Keaton's Batman is almost literally like if The Punisher dressed as Batman..
This was great to see all of the other cast choices and the winding road that lead to the final product, a classic masterpiece 🎥🍿❤️
❤ your detailed videos are brilliant, it's like a live action IMDB 😊
fantastic share! i was 17 when “batman” came out and it really was a pop culture powerhouse. everyone talked about it and you got so much right. the easter eggs and added info are great and make me want to revisit the whole thing.
God knows how young I must have been when I first saw this movie (7 or 8 probably as I was born in ‘86) but my dad loved it too and we spent many afternoons watching it together. We had the cool VHS copy too. Lots of amazing memories attached to this incredible film.
