Finally! Someone who presents the settings in a clear and logical way. I can now set custom settings without an hour of trial and error.
Glad it was helpful to you!!
I was given an X100F last week as an early Christmas present. Thank you very much for your very clear and concise introduction to settings. I can't wait to hit the street with it tomorrow!
Thank you, thank you! Finally I have found someone who intelligently detailed how to set and use the Custom setting. Thank you again. I'm definitely following you. Cheers, Alain.
Huge fan of the channel. Cheers for using this camera for film. Really want to get my hands on this camera.
Thanks. I have just subscribed. Have this camera and am getting to know it a step at a time. Your vids help that process.

Hey Sam! Although you've broken up with your FujiX100F (I'm still weeping), I found this video very helpful. It wasn't my first time using it... My X100F just got back from repairs and all of my menu settings were reset to factory default. Anyway...just want to share some love. Please don't take down the Fuji series videos.
Enjoyed this video as always man. Keep it up please!
Nice helpful video, thanks. You mentioned quite a few settings I haven't bothered checking out like EVF color saturation.
Just found out your channel!! love the content, I recently got a X-T2 and this video was helpful... Thank Samuel!!
Thanks Matteo! :)
I think that your presentation is awesome. Your way of describing and illustrating are great.
Thanks Bob! Appreciate it : ) I had fun editing it.
This was great man. Thank you
Its nice to see, how people (and photographers) are different. I mean, I have set up totally other things to buttons and Q menu.
This tips with change EVF brightness (especially not use AUTO) and desaturating to -3 were very helpful. Thanks.
Thank god we have options to customize right? :) I'm glad you found something useful in my video!
Enjoyed your vid! Wishing you happy new year!
Thanks Chee! Happy new year to you too!
I always love your videos! Wishing you a happy new year and a happy new marriage!!
What a nice comment. Thank you Sean! And wishing you a happy new year too! :)
Thanks, very useful. Happy New Year!
Happy new year to you too!
Love your settings. Pro. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Great video!!! Thank your sharing 😊!
Perfect guide. Thank you
Getting my X100F in the next few days! Thanks for sharing!
Aw yeaaah :) You will love it I am sure!
Great video, thanks for sharing!
My pleasure!
Thanks for posting such a useful video.
Your welcome. I'm glad it was useful to you!
Thnx for your useful tips. Please tell us which extra grip you use, it looks real steady and handy.
Excellent. Thanks, mate.
you're welcome!
Very helpful.
Most helpful. Danke!
Bitte bitte :)
Absolutely helpful! thank You!
Did not know you could turn off AF light and thanks for showing how to adjust ISO with front button!
Your welcome. I'm glad it was useful to you :)
Great videos Samuel, just got my x100f and discovered your channel at the same time love what your doing, I also like the half case on yours could you give any info on it please thanks.
Thanks Mick. The first link in the description is a link to all my gear. You will find the Grip there! :) And I have a review on my channel.
Helpful!
Perhaps nobody will be seeing this, but I just picked up a x100f like 2 weeks ago (yes I know, I am wayyyy late) and had watched tons of videos prior! But this is the first time I come across your channel and this video, this video is SOOO HELPFUL, I usually never leave comments but now I have to! 🥲 why didn’t this video pop up on my prior searches at all! I like that you were hands on with the settings to show us, and I really appreciate the iso tip, I hate to manually dial it in.
I'm seeing this😄 Super happy that my video helped you! It's great to know it still helps people like you even though it is an old video I made years ago. Have fun witht he X100F! Great camera :)
Thank you for sharing! Would you do a video on your process of zone focusing w/ the 100F?
+Jason Agulay I will think about it!
Great video, but I would make one suggestion: Instead of using Manual (M) focus for back button focusing, I would recommend setting it to Continuous (C). This way you can still focus and recompose using AEL/AFL but you also have the option to use continuous focus when necessary (useful for moving subjects in the streets for example, or quick-reaction shots).

Wow somebody who shoots with auto iso. I haven't heard that much. But to my opinion that's much better because you can totally decide what you want as aperture or shutterspeed
Can you please explain how to zone focus with this camera? Thanks.
Any helpful links to get answers to really basic questions for beginners who probably shouldn't be using this camera like myself, for example i cant figure out for the life of me how to set the flash to go off when i need to use it :( surprised it doesn't come out of the box in this mode. Also, in the store before i bought it on the lcd display screen there was a see through "grey" area, not sure what that was for or if its even needed but i don't see it on my camera. last is focus, im used to holding in the top of the shutter button for a second or so to get auto focus lock but with this cam it seems to blink green like its trying hard to focus making me lose a good shot, any tips would be appreciated, ps , very good video, thank you.
Great content Samuel thanks. What is the action camera in this video ?
Nice video. Is that a GoPro on top of X100F on hot shoe? What accessory is that needed to fit GoPro on top of X100F?
Great video man! I just want to understand what justifies the center weighted photometry and why the middle point for stills (I'm a beginner). Thanks!
Thanks! It's just how I used to shoot on the 5D Mark 2. The middle AF point is the fastest and most accurate Af point in most cameras. And because I always now where the camera wants to focus (the exact middle) I can always aim for the spot I want to be in focus and then reframe my image. I use center weighted photometry because I use the middle AF point and the part I want to be in focus is usually also the part I want to expose right. Hope that helps! :) Try out what works best for you. There are so many ways to use a camera.
Great video as always...a quick question...what is the auto ISO settings that you use or find more effective for street photography? (meaning what default and max ISO and what minimum shutter speed)?
Thanks!!
I only use 1 auto ISO setting and that is max ISO value 6400 and minimun shutterspeed of 1/125.
Thank you for your video! Really useful information.
Can you tell me, what kind of photometry do you use in general (according to the streetphotography)?
Center weighted!
Greetings from France... Wishing you well.... For your Manuel setting for c2 you mentioned having sharpness of +2....what about strength.. Fineness.. Threshold.. Contrast... I have an entry level camera Canon eos 800d.. Thanks peace
I would love to see you with a red hat!
Thanks for sharing. it helps me a lot.
Btw, I wanna hear your opinion about exposure measurement.
Which exposure measurement is good at street photography? Spot? Multi? Center?
Zitn depends
Thanks for sharing! New subscriber here ;-)
Thanks for subbing! :)
I really like your videos, the tone, the music, everything is so refreshing and inspiring ! Hope to see more from you.
Thx for sharing your settings btw. I just made some tries today, and it seems to me that with your setting of Sharpness +2, the jpg look much more noisy or grainy even at low iso. So what’s the point for you to put +2 in sharpness?
I got this idea with the +2 sharpness from fujifilm photographer Kevin Mullins. To be honest I haven't tried other settings. I was always pleased with the +2 results. I don't think the noise will be enhanced that much. It could also be the film simulations that emulate noise. Acros vor example has its own noise integrated. Thanks for your comment! Will do more for sure :)
Samuel L. Streetlife Yep, I remember reading a post on his blog indeed.
It’s quite difficult for me to choose a common set of settings. I would rather choose one set for a particular atmosphere. I may need to further explore my street photography.
Kevin Mullins is an amazing street photographer and has amazing stuff on his YT channel and website. check him out for sure if you are a Fuji shooter
Can you explain exactly how you use your back button af, i shoot nikon and use AF-ON button exclusively for AF( my camera is set to AF-C so when i press the AF-ON it gives me AF-S and when i press and hold It gives me AF-C, my shutter button has the af disconnected of course. Did you reassign the AE-L/AF-L button to AF-ON ? how do you switch into AF-C?
Please forgive me for a lot of questions, but nobody actually talks about this, and i'm really used to shooting this way with dslr. i would really appreciate your help as i'm considering a fujifilm and thats one of the things that is very confusing !
Image at 3:44 is just stunning. is that your click Samuel?if yes how can i get a print of this?
Great video! Wondering what focusing techniques you use? Auto, Single point, Manual? Thanks!
Andrew Song mostly single point auto focus! Sometimes I use zone focusing when I shoot from the hip or the sun is out.
Excellent video! The best I've seen so far! I can't seem to get the ISO front dial to work. Any ideas? I spin it and the ISO does not change. I have my ISO set to AUTO. Thanks.
Go to the wrench menu >Button/Dial setting>ISO DIAL SETTING A >set this to COMMAND. 😀
Wow! I would have never known that! Thanks for the quick response! :D

Hi man love your videos 🤘.
Where can I get this grip or case you use?!
Thanks.

I really love that Japanese (I think) song at the end and your other videos. Do you happen to have a link for it?
Yes I do but I think I cannot post links here. But the artist is "The Kyoto Connection". And the title for this track is "Reveal the Magic". You should find it on google. :)
Got it. Fantastic! Thank's a lot :)

Great style and execution, subscribed! I have a question, please: I own an x100. I love the output, I can live with slow focusing. Is the xtrans sensor that bad compared to Bayer? Is the experience any different with the x100t or x100f? Thanks!
Thanks for the sub! Unfortunately though, I can't say if the bayer sensor was better. I never owned older fuji cameras. I heard some say the magic is gone with the new xtrans sensor but I don't think the images have less soul now.
@@SamuelStreetlife Ok, thank you very much.
Hi the custom settings you are doing kan only be done in manual mode, And not AF which I tried quite new to this x100f and the menu is so large your videos are fantastic 👍
In your C1 setting - what do you have your ISO set at. I can’t see what your setting is.
this was a brilliant walkthrough mate, cheers!
Super helpful! But how to save the custom setting actually? Seems mine didn’t work. It always back to Fuji’s setting.. thank you!!
Go into the menu and under "IQ" (3rd page) you find "EDIT/SAVE CUSTOM SETTINGS". Here you can change your settings and when you go back the camera asks you if you want to save the changes.
How to set the iso with front dial? Thanks!
hi Samuel, what is the brand of your x100f casing?
How did you set that front dial to control ISO?
Hoi Samu.
Lustiger OberlippenBart 😅
Hey Samuel, great Video! I bought the x100s today, but I guess I can use this Settings as well, am I right? Just one question ... How often do u change the Settings while shooting on the street? Or is it more switch on the camera, try to get some nice moments and than shoot?
cheers and thanx so much for ur help!! : - )
May I should add a bit more Information to my question. Im just a bit afraid of switching always from mode to mode. I always try to shoot just a roling and to change some details, for that I can use a Little application or so on.
I change my cameras setting farely often... Nowdays I shoot alot more Auto (Auto ISO, Auto Aputure). I change settings on the spot.
you custom settings with the likes of B&W... are you shooting both RAW and JPEG, as I thought those settings wouldn't touch RAW files.... Thank you.
(New owner of a X100f )
What's that grip thingy you have on the camera?
Which flash external you recommend for x100F? btw great video!
Currently I am loving the Flash Q Q20II !
Samuel what camera grip was that on your camera?
Hi Samuel, another great video. I have one question maybe you could help me with. I went to change my EVF brightness as you have done, but when I select Manual to adjust the EVF brightness it keeps telling me to "check the finder". Do you know what I'm doing wrong. Thanks.
Ah you just have to look through the EVF (viefinder) ! :) Then you can see a + & - slider and you can adjust the brightness.
Many thanks Samuel
Samuel …..Loved the videos, but I am a little confused. On Dec. 17, 2017 "My favorite Film Simulations + Settings" you say that your setting for color are : Astia, H-Tone (-2) S-Tone (-2) & Sharp (+2), but in another video dated Dec 28, 2017 (Only 2 week later), You say that your color settings are: Astia, H-Tone (0), S-Tone (0) & Sharp (+2). Can you please explain? Really like the photos that you shot. Thanks, Bob
Hi, great video - I just picked up the camera. I noticed in your previous video that you have highlights and shadows as -2 when shooting colour but in this video it’s 0.
Also, if you shoot RAW, do you still see the film simulations?
Hey Adam. At the moment I have shadow and highlight at 0. I change them sometimes. And yes, you can still see the film simulation in your RAW files. You can even switch between the film simulation in Photoshop or Lightroom :)
Samuel L. Streetlife does that work on the fujifilm xe2? Cause when I put the raw file it didn’t show the film simulation
@@Maxhuertas Did you learn how to use film sim's in lightroom? if not then once you load raw files go to camera profiles you will find the jpeg sims over there :)
Hi Samuel, I am new to street photography. I just purchased at Fujifilm. I was wondering what lens you would recommend. I plan on shooting street and low light environments.
What did you end up going with?
When you do the back-button auto focus, do you set the shutter dial and aperture to 'A', auto?
That depends on the situation. I shoot mostly auto aputure and auto ISO nowdays. And manual shutterspeed. Sometimes all manual like I said in this video.
Very helpful explanation of custom image settings using the Q button but why are the bottom row options grey background rather than black? Is there any significance to this?
I just had to check it for myself and it looks like the bottom row are settings that apply to all custom presets. So if you change of them it will apply to all C-Numbers.
I have been trying to figure this out as well. There are a lot of settings available to include in the Q menu which cannot be saved to a C-number. (Look at the list of settings at 10:00 in your video, those are the only ones that are available to be stored in a C-number)
So I am not sure there's any significance to these settings besides their location. Maybe coincidence that the settings positioned there as factory default are things that cannot be saved to C-number: Face Detect, Flash Function, etc.?
I'm familiar with back button focus except that on my Nikon I have it set to autofocus continuous as part of my back button focus set up. I see that with Fuji, you can set it to manual drive and use back button focus. The question is if I hold the back button focus once it will act as a single focus shot but if I hold it in in my current Nikon settings of af-c, my back button focus will start tracking as continuous. What happens when it's in manual like yours and you hold in and keep on holding the back button Focus? Does it act as continuous as well as or does it act as af-s? The main difference being that my back button focus is associated to afc and yours is to manual. Thanks. Looking to switch to Fuji.
On the left side of the camera you have a switch for AF, MF and Continuous focus. If you set it to Continuous focus the back button focus will act like your nikon. So it's the same :)
Hey Sam, do you recommend buying lens hood for the WCL and TCL lens?
You can use the same lens hood from the X100F for the WCL. I use a len hoo don my wcl but never used one on the TCL. It is not really needed.
at 7:58 _ you change the ISO using the small front dial. How do you set the dial to change ISO? Mine is doing nothing, and I can't find how to customise this dial to adjust the ISO.
I'd really appreciate knowing how to do this, as I also find the default ISO dial hard to use.
Two years late, but you need to put the compensation dial to 'C' and then it should overide Iso. I don't know how to resort back to auto iso though
Hi Samuel.
Fuji noob question: Can I set the BB focus to the rear scroll wheel? As in when u press the wheel in?
Yes you can
Can help me how to set that dial for ISO?
Hi Samuel, I have the x100s, will these recommendations and setting apply?
If you can find them in the menu then yes. I don't know what the menu of the X100S looks like.
What brand and model is your half case please? Seems to have a substantial grip. Great video!
First thank you for this video. I cannot read the photos in computer or phone which I took from x100s. And I noticed camera gives me red light. can you please help me to resolve this problem. thank you again
Did you shoot JPEG or RAW? If you have the same problem with JPEG files you should check if the files are corrupt. Maybe format your SD card in the camera. If you can't open the RAW files install software that can. Try for example the new Capture pro express for fujifilm. It's free and made for fujifilm cmaeras :) I don't know what the red ligth could mean... maybe your SD card is too slow and the camera is processing the images. Try using a faster Card. Hope it helped!
i just bought the x100f. what kind of tripod are you using? i'm looking for a small tripod for night shooting in the city.
if you want SUPER small this is excellent. I use it with my Sony a6000 mirrorless camera : www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ANCPNM/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I'm using a cheap canon tripod in this video that I bought used in japan. I also have a small travel tripod wich I used for almost 10 years now... it's called the Slik Sprint Pro EZ. It's really light and compact. I don't know what else is out there rigth now. Haven't looked for a tripod for a while.
Hey Dude, is the LCD screen also laggy, when u are in the menu (see the background)
Yes, totally normal!
How do activate face detection
See if you pick fine + raw, you get 2 files?
Wait... you don’t shoot in classic chrome...?? 😂 great video man 👍🏻
No I don't! But I was always thinking I would love Classic Chrome because I saw so many great photographs taken from other Photographers with Classic Chrome. But somehow I don't like it on my X100F... Maybe someday I'll give it another try :)
to each there own 😛I shoot raw, in classic chrome, but i edit the raws and they don't really end up looking chrome anymore haha
7:55 how do you make that wheel control iso?
Turn the dial to T
what brand is your grip mate?
+Paul Jeru Lacsamana that's the Grip Case Pro from JB Camera Designs. I have a review about that grip on my channel :)
X100F or the X-E3?
Try to get both cameras in your hands to test them and see how they feel. The X-E3 is probably the better camera but the X100F has its own feel to it. Hard to explain.
What's your firmware version?
I think I have the current firmware.
was hoping for less camera setings and more settings you use capture certain images like what shutter speed and aperture you use for different kinds of shots.
That is a good topic for a future video! Will keep that in mind.
@@SamuelStreetlife cool thanks
