    I tend to set the af-l button to continuous focus and set the camera to manual focus. That way I can press and release back focus button for single focus, hold it down for continuous focus or use the focus ring for manual focus, basically all three focus modes on at the same time.

    07:00 NR only applies to JPG, same with sharpening. The muddy details and artifacts people see in LR is the bad demosaicing of the RAW file and depends on the amount of detail in the image.

    • @HenriPierreChavaz
      @HenriPierreChavaz 5 лет назад +2

      True, that makes you take the whole video with a grain of salt

    • @jorgepeterbarton
      @jorgepeterbarton 4 года назад

      everything only applies to JPG, its jsut the program may use 'reflect shooting settings' or whatever it is labelled as to automatically default to those settings. Auto-white balance may be useful i guess since then the program uses a reading from the shoot, or just use the auto-white in program.
      The only change is using DR settings - this intentionally underexposes on a lower iso, and turns up shadows or a curve to preserve highlights. So the RAW would be darker in that case.

    Setting your camera on 'auto' will give you a good idea of the range for a particular setting. Then you can take it from there in the Aperture, Shutter priority or Manual mode.

  • @Nathansmithphotography
    @Nathansmithphotography 3 года назад +1

    Enjoyed this, and I pretty much have the same 3 AUTO ISO settings on my 4 Fuji cameras. One tip: on all 4 cameras I set the right control button to AUTO ISO so I can QUICKLY change between the 3 settings. And a further button push to the right allows me to change the minimum shutter speed or max ISO in the Auto ISO setting. And just a half press on the shutter locks that in and I can quickly start shooting.

      Joe Allam all in the detail.

  • @JeremyYoungDesign
    @JeremyYoungDesign 6 лет назад +5

    My understanding is that +2 on the shadows actually "crushes" the shadows making them darker. I think what you want is actually -2 on the shadows therefore retaining the shadow detail. I may be wrong though as I haven't hd a lot of time to play with this setting. Hopefully someone else can confirm?

    • @JoobieLoobieSoobie
      @JoobieLoobieSoobie 5 лет назад

      Yes. ‘Plus’ adds shadow and adds highlight. ‘Minus’ reduces shadow and reduces highlight. But only if you shoot jpg. Raw files have no adjustments applied.

    Some nice tips. I've owned every model of the X100 since it came out, and with the addition of the joystick controller on the back I thought they'd got it almost perfect and thus I'd hold off upgrading from the F for a good long time. But the V offers three upgrades that made it irresistible: 1) the tilting screen, which makes it even more usable for street photography, since you can be less obtrusive in grabbing shots of people; 2) the touch screen (although that meant losing the joystick), and 3) the redesigned lens. I use a Canon setup for all of my other photography (recently got an EOS R as my main body; kept my 90D and 80D for specific prime lenses) but the Fuji was just made for street photography, or just when you to have a great camera handy on a casual outing. I use setting similar to yours, though I mostly stick with auto ISO on the #2 setting.

    +2 on shadows crushes them. -2 brings them back. I know its weird because negative reduces the highligts and positive brightens the highlights. So yeah its basically backwards with shadows.

    Can anyone help me. My night photos on my X100F are so blurry. I literally can’t breath when taking a photo for fear the image will look like soup. Any solutions?

    • @anewcareerinanewtown
      @anewcareerinanewtown 5 лет назад

      For night time if you're at f2 or f2.8 at 1/125th second and around ISO 3200 you should be able to shoot an average scene lit by street lights. I'd check your ISO is high enough - if it's too low, around the iso 200 mark, your camera will use a longer shutter speed to let in the correct amount of light. Longer shutter speed > camera shake > soup.

      Joe Allam I have the art 35 and 24 for my d500. I'm thinking of trying this x100f and seeing which 35 I like more. Either getting rid of the 24mm or keeping it. I'd love to have a compact camera that shoots this well. I love my d500 autofocus and it does everything so well. But it's large. I'd love to keep my 70200 fl ed attached at all times and use this camera when I go for walks. I hate having to stop and change such a large lens and potentially missing a shot. If it had weather sealing I'd definitely splurge.

    • @Willie0211
      @Willie0211 7 лет назад

      Joe Allam but the 35mm art is definitely worth it. I've used the 35mm 1.4 distagon on the a7rii and this beats it in my opinion. I have a lot more faith getting the shot I want.

    • @danamahmoud951
      @danamahmoud951 6 лет назад

      It is an awesome camera, but it is a fixed lens ( you will need to back away a lot to get certain scenes to fit your screen). The digital zoom isn't that great and it only works when the camera is set to JPEG mode :/

    • @WengTeow
      @WengTeow 5 лет назад

      same as you I came from Sony a6300.. sold it due to weight reasons.. yes.. although the a6300 is quite small and light.. I am a flash user and without flash I don't know how to take photos anymore.. so when you add on a flash and say a sigma 30 1.4 the weight is pretty heavy after a while.. so here I am with a brownie x100f.. love love the leaf shutter and its ability to sync the flash above 1/160 in other words I almost have hss capability with the in built flash.. also the 23 mm is sharp wide open.. only when doing macro wide open its a bit soft.. I had a full day shooting yesterday and did not noticed the weight at all.. super!! I will miss the 4k and the HD slo mo on the a6300 but frankly I just wanna shoot and shoot with this camera... I would say go for it if you're still thinking about it.. cheers... and Joe.. nice tips BTW..waiting for get the square hood.. 😀

    Isn't the shadow tones for post processing only? Raw shouldn't have any settings as its only camera data..

    • @joeallam
      @joeallam  7 лет назад

      Yep, but what I'm trying to say is that I'm experimenting with a different "base" level of shadows, to save always having to adjust it in post. Either way is non-destructive, just seeing if it saves a few extra steps along the way 👍

    • @theindivisible
      @theindivisible 7 лет назад

      fgsz291 raw file is just raw camera data without settings so yes you are correct. What he is saying is that his base edit starts at +2 shadowtones and start from there and edit everything else

    FYI none of the image settings (highlight, shadow, color, noise, grain, sharpness, dynamic range) have any effect whatsoever on RAW files. They will render on your LCD but if you don’t shoot in JPEG nothing you change in those settings will be applied because by definition a RAW file is, well, just raw data. The reason Fujifilm users shoot in jpg is that the camera’s raw processor is built specifically for the Fujifilm sensor’s unique pixel array pattern. It does a much better job than Adobe’s conversion which is optimized for a Bayer array sensor. Give it a try!

    The x100 (original) is what made me switch from lightroom to capture one. I wasn't happy with the noise processing and also the blowing out of some artificial lights (especially blue LEDs) that didn't happen with the in camera processor. I tried a whole bunch of software; dxo optics pro, silkypix etc. and capture one just blew them all away. I still have a subscription to lr and occasionally open it up (and it is a little faster); but the image quality in capture one still can't be beat for fuji raw files - and the extra features also mean I have to go into photoshop far less. I'd recommend anyone unhappy with lr to give the trial a go (make sure to watch the official tutorial videos as they're super helpful when getting started).

    I love the nature design of X100 camera series, especially X100F model ... As a best retro camera, it has tons of useful feature as described by our master Joe Allam in his vlogs ... However, I still haven't decided to buy this camera yet due to the recent mirror-less APS camera launched by fujifilm which diminish the classic ISO dial and shutter speed buttons ... Which one shall I buy it? :)

    Does your lenshood get in the way when using ovf mode? Great video by the way thanks!

    Hi Joe. Great video. Subbed. Was wondering if you have a lens cap solution for that funky-ass square hood you're using ?
    Cheers,

    Hey, Joe. Really enjoying your vids, man. Keep it up. Question: what brand lens hood is that you got on the F? Also, where can I get it?

    Enjoyed your video, thanks. I have an X Pro 2, which I love. Quick question: Are you certain that reducing the noise level in camera, or adjusting the shadow level in camera, will have any impact on RAW files? I was always under the impression these in-camera adjustments were only baked into the jpegs. Thoughts?

    Should we use ND filter only on sunny days, or just leave it switched on all the time?

    I'll be traveling to Japan in a few months and want to buy an X100F. I was just wondering if the warranty is still valid in Europe or if it's just valid for Japan. Do you have any ideas how that works? Also, I remember you complaining about the lack of an included lens hood, where'd you get yours?
    Great videos btw, one of the few photography channels with photos that are actually nice!

    I have a question regarding light adjustments in the camera. If you're shooting RAW, does bumping up the shadows to +2 affect the RAW in LR or is it purely for seeing the photo differently while reviewing on the camera's LCD? I would think by doing that it would start to stray away from a RAW image as now you're making adjustments. I've got an x100s and I debate the same changes. Not sure if I quite understand the workings of all of it though! Any answers are welcome!

    Would you recommend this camera over the x-t20? What are your thoughts?

    Thanks for helpful video. Question: At 17 seconds on the video, there is a shot of the LCD screen "SELECT CUSTOM SETTINGS". I have an X100F with Rev 2.10 software and cannot find a way to get the image shown at 17 seconds. When I go into "SELECT CUSTOM SETTINGS" I get a list rather than a grid. Could it be you are running a different version of camera software, or is there a setting that I am missing?

    Hello, thank you for sharing this very useful video, As a beginner I have a question: what metering settings do you normally use with x100f when shooting streetphotograpy?

    Thanks Joe I recently purchased the X100F after watching your videos.. initially used in Melbourne and now off to Japan.. following your footsteps. Thanks for the auto iso tips I have now set to the same and assigned a function button to quickly switch.. Any tips on your focus setting? Like the hood. I went with JJC that still allows original lens cap

      Paul Smith Did you use it in the rain or drizzle? If so what was your experience? I'm looking forward to buying an x100f and i was wondering how it held up in wet and humid areas. Thanks for any help or advice... Oh and I hope you've tape over the diopter wheel area as some people have said you can get dirt in there.

    Thinking of taking my first trip to Japan, what do you think is the best time to go or best time to avoid?

      November is my favourite because of autumn colours. But April is most popular for cherry blossom season.

    Hey joe, considering you can get the X-E3 with the 24mm F2 for less than the X-100F would you recommend it over the X-100F? Do you think you'll get your hands on one to do a review?

    I don't understand why you are playing around with your shadow tones etc if you only shoot raw, I thought all these settings only change your jpegs?

    • @joeallam
      @joeallam  6 лет назад

      It affects the viewfinder and thumbnails too. Gives a slightly different feel when I’m out shooting and potentially inspires my next shot in a different direction. Similar to setting my viewfinder to black and white actually
