  • When the X100V came out, I was so excited that it had “fixed” all of the problems that I had with all of the other X100 series cameras up to that point. Turns out I was both wrong and right there. The X100F is actually an amazing camera that I’ve been using for the last year and is a really great option if you don’t want to spend the money on an X100V.

I had the X100F from it's initial launch to the release of the V. And while the V is technically better I hold so many good memories with the F. It was the tool that I learned the most with about the kind of photographer I am and what I enjoy about photography. And can I say something unpopular about the F? I think the lens is better. It has more character. The bokeh is smoother and more forgiving on skin. Shooting in jpeg with the right custom settings and that lens gave me some really filmic photos. As for the AF, ya it's not as good wide open but stopped down its extremely reliable. Also stopped down it's extremely sharp. I am starring at a print I made with it years ago now and it's really crazy how sharp it can be. Anyways, I regret every day I sold this camera. In fact, I will eventually buy it again someday.

I love the x100 community (own the v). If it wasn't for you two, I wouldn't have bought one, and I think to date, it has been my favorite camera that I will always want to pick up and go shooting with (the olympus pen f also had this effect).

I bought a used X100F last year as my first ‘real’ camera in many years and fell in love with it immediately. I has the right balance of hi-tech/high-quality and old school controls; reminds me of my old film cameras. I recently added a used Fuji X-T3, possibly the best camera deal out there at the moment, but in reality I still take most of my photos with the X100F because it’s with me all the time. (And I also shoot B&W jpegs, with RAWS for editing later.)

We adore the X100 series and the F is no exception to that love. We love to see how you’ve recycled its use case to capture your adorable family’s daily life. The F certainly deserves to be in the hands of more photographers on the daily. Great Video Benj!

Great to see videos on older cameras. I think most high quality cameras made after sometime 2012-2014 is really good enough for anything even today.
I bought the X100 (first one) after learning about its existence in 2019 for about $250. After a while it had me move from Canons altogether with the great JPEGs, great RAW files, and all day carry size. I found that by prefocusing and using the AF lock on the back I could get the shots I wanted just as often as with the Canons, even of the kids, but with less tossaway photos - more keepers. Upgraded to the X100T later, and suddenly owned much more of the Fuji X system. My only drawback is that it (as all AF cameras metering off the sensor) sometimes second guesses the timing of the shot. Solution: Leica M. So the X100 was sort of the gateway to that system. Still keep the X100T with an WCL because of good quality and handling vs size/weight (a good 28mm eqv setup).

I love my X100F. I had no idea I needed this camera. It's my favorite camera for family and travel. The colors are amazing. I always enjoy a 35mm focal length. Love not having to worry about packing different lenses and just tossing this into any bag without taking up much space, without sacrificing quality.

Thanks for reminding me about the X100. I absolutely adored my X100S until it gave up the ghost a few years ago. Providence dropped a Ricoh GR II into my hand shortly after the X100 died, but that camera is now acting up, so another X100 might be in cards - the F is around €1000 here in Europe.
    Be well and keep shooting!

The X100F is my perfect daily carry camera for family stuff and vacation, and I've even shot some assignment work with it. The film sims are gorgeous, especially Acros at higher ISO. I've made 20"x30" prints from this camera and they are beautiful. If it's a little soft at f/2 close up, I don't really care as long as there's an emotional connection to the moment captured.

Great video. I’ve been thinking of picking up one of the 100 series cameras, but as of now I haven’t been able to justify it. Your comments about jpegs hit home, and I was prompted me to reveal my dirty little secret. I own a number of film cameras and still shot film regularly. But I became enamored with the Fujifilm line of cameras around the time that the XT-2 came out. Since then I’ve also owned the XT-30 and currently own an XT-4 and and a X Pro 3. My confession is that I really love the film simulations and while I always record in both jpeg and raw I almost never end up using the raw files. I mostly exhibit my photos only on Instagram and Facebook and use the Lightroom on my I-Pad to edit them when the need it. I often toggle back and forth between Provia and Acros in the simulations and have been perfectly happy with the resulting jpeg files. Thanks for your video and keep up the good work.

This is a great camera. I sold a DSLR for the x100f some years ago and it really helped improve my photography and I absolutely fell in love with the rangefinder style. So much in fact I bought a Leica m8 and have sold the x100. I have no regrets but lots of fond memories of this camera. I am tempted to get the original x100 for a “rough and ready” camera to leave in the car or a coat to go everywhere.

I bought my Fujifilm X100F in December 2019 to have a modern, easy to carry 'travel/grab and go' digital camera and it suits that purpose admirably. Love the built-in film and filter simulations. If I have need for filters beyond the filter simulations: I use a 49mm to 52mm step-up ring so I can use the 52mm diameter filters in my collection. Also like the hybrid electronic/optical viewfinder: I leave mine in 'electronic' mode and use the viewfinder rather than the panel on the back of the camera; in effect you're 'seeing what the lens sees' much like a film SLR camera and all the information is right there in the viewfinder. And that it very closely resembles classic film rangefinder cameras with similar control placement is a plus and it has very good build quality. I'm very satisfied with mine and felt no need to upgrade to the X100V.

I started with the X100 just because I loved the look of it. My used model was a victim of the SAB issue fuji wouldn’t repair for free as I didn’t have the original proof of purchase so I decided to upgrade to the T which was far better than the original. The T served me well until I killed it in a flash flood. Insurance came to my rescue and replaced the T with the F. The F is still going strong I love it to bits it never disappoints me I’ve shot landscapes street indoor sports family everything and anything such a great camera. The V I definitely want it but I don’t need it. Liked and subbed cheers 📷❤️📷

The F was my first Fuji, and of course, that was a rabbit hole to get lost in. I now have an X-T2 (and X-M1 for vintage glass) but it's the F I adore most. Whilst I have the X-T2 set for RAW, I've got the F set for Film Sims, and with my Nisi grad ND filter kit, I can get some really moody landscapes in Acros+R. My only regret now is, all 3 of my Fuji are black and of late, I've wished for a silver body.

I had and loved the X100F. I was fortunate enough to find an X100V about a month ago. It is definitely an upgrade over the f in terms of the lens sharpness especially wide open. But, I find it interesting that so many owners of the V use a black pro mist or similar filter. I feel that these filters give a similar effect (haziness/halation) that I did not enjoy with the F. So, my advice is that if you enjoy the look of photos you see taken with a black pro mist or similar filter, then the F is the camera for you!

I think the XE3 is a great buy for a compact everyday camera from Fuji. Sure there is no OVF and its a different shooting experience from the X100 series but no too far off and the size is comparable. You also get the option to change lenses which is the advantage for me. 23/50 f2 pair and you're off on an adventure.

I liked my x100f. Great jpegs, but it had a few wear issues. The shutter button would stick after seeing some sea spray on a boat ride. It also had some huge dust spots on the sensor that ruined countless photos. I also didnt like that the shutter count went up according to the viewfinder actuation and not actually the shutter. I NEVER used the optical vf. The x100v looks nice, but I've been using exclusively vintage lenses the last few years. I would definitely reccomend the x100 series to anyone who wants one though.

I’ve had the X100S, X100V and now went back to the X100F. Yes, it’s a heartbeat slower with AF, but the addition of the d-pad that was missing on the X100V and GFX50R really helps navigate. I don’t want to over-romanticize it, but the lens is definitely a little softer and more film-like. I use the standard Fujifilm 49mm MRC Protector filter and with the lens natural halation, it looks like a Moment Cinebloom 5% If a new version is coming that has the W235 battery from the XT4/XT5/XH2/XH2s/XS-20, I’ll get it and keep them both.

    Love my x100F,
I bought a Leica Q which is fantastic and is like a X100 on steroids much better IQ.
I kept the X100F thankfully and although it does not get much regular use, it is easier to Chuck in my pocket.
I have a Ricoh GR2 which is great when it actually behaves and works, but it’s temperamental where as the the X100 is tough, never freezes or fails. ( The Leica Q likes to throw a fit sometimes, and needs a battery out reset )
I also lug around a Nikon D850 and D700 to shoot in all weathers, when I can actually get some film, I take a Contax G1 out or a Nikon F3HP.
So X100F is definitely a favourite in my experience.

I used to live in the world of "shoot-RAW-and-for-the-edit" but have, over 15 years, realised that the most valuable thing we have as photographers and humans is time. Time to create, time to hone your craft, time to print photos and enjoy them, time to live with a camera in your hand. Maybe "shoot-RAW-and-for-the-edit" was all about control, or the illusion that I could retain total control? In the end, for me, the idea of complete flexibility and "total control" turned out to be an illusion and became more like chains that stole my time and buried my photos behind a wall of "god I have to edit all these - I'll never get it done". "Shoot-RAW-and-for-the-edit" has its place, especially for specific use cases where you must deliver the concept of perfection to a client. I no longer make photos for clients and paying the bills and I've moved to shooting 100% JPG on FujiFilm. Maybe I'll move back to 20% RAW again but I'll never go back to 100% RAW workflow.
Maybe others might try for themselves and experiment where they abandon RAW, shoot JPG, and get more photos up and out there faster for others to enjoy. And have more time to enjoy making photographs?
Likely a very controversial point of view?
Thanks for the great content, Benj

Had one for a few years got rid of my canon 5d and l lenses to simplify, never looked back, take it everywhere, there is NOTHING negative about this camera, like every camera there are things that you will like less or more but it delivers the stuff that matters, image quality is brilliant, useability is brilliant, it’s not a lightening fast 5d, it’s just a proper everyday quality camera.

Thanks for bringing up the ethical reasons to buy used.
Another reason to purchase used is to not be so reckless with spent human labor. Everything we purchase cost an immense amount of human life to design, test, assemble, etc. With the magic of mass production and currency/labor cost leveraging we can afford these products (without the later everything would be as expensive as a Leica, maybe more). You don't have to be a luddite and reject new technology. But the obsession of faster/better can overshadow the state of the art we DO have.
I own a 1938 Leica III and apart from being a total jewel of a camera I often think of the lives that made this thing during a war. Even in peace time life is short and we should all appreciate the ingenuity and craft that goes into everything as well as the time out of someone's life it took to make it.

Hey Ben, or anyone else here who can answer this question. I want to switch from a few older Nikon DSLR models to do stuff like the images you’ve shown in this video and a little product photography for a handmade business. Can this lens be converted to a 50(ish)mm? I used to do more photography and I want to get rid of the giant bag of cameras and lenses I have sitting unused because of how big and heavy they are. It would be cool if I could replace all that stuff with a super simple setup. Thanks!

My ideal camera otherwise would have been the M200 with a pancake 17f2.8 or the 22f2 if it was any good and didn't suck in dust with the ridiculous external focusing. • @matthieuzglurg6015
    @matthieuzglurg6015 2 года назад +2

I may be making a lot of ennemies as I'm writing that comment, however I think the X100F is the onr in the lineup that you should skip the most.
Don't get me wrong, that's a very good camera, in the absolute sense of the word. However, I have a few gripes with it that I think makes the other X100 a better value for money.
The first gripe that I have with it is the lens. This lens was made for the original X100 back in 2011, for a 12MP sensor. When it comes to sharpness, the lens is pretty soft, especially wide open, especially if you focus on a somewhat closer object. And that was a problem on older X100 as well, but the lower resolution sensor made it less visible in a way.
Second, is the actual price of the camera. The lens is old, the AF motor as well. It might have the sensor and processor from the X-T2, but the lens is not nearly as fast as it should be to take full advantage of that performance advantage. Knowing that, a slightly older X100T is just as fast when it comes to focusing.
My overall problem with the X100F is the fact that for that kind of money, the feature set and performance is not good enough when tou compare it to other X100 cameras. If your goal is only to get the closest you can be to a film look, then an original X100 or an X100S are already plenty. If you want more performance for the AF, more film sims, better menus and ergos, well then X100T it is. The X100F does not bring anything more to the table other than a processor it can't really take advantage of because the lens is too slow, and a higher resolution sensor that you most likely don't need, and can't really take advantage of either since the lens is kinda soft (or you're just shooting at f/5.6 all the time).
So in a nutshell : if you want an X100 for the experience and the image look, the X100T already fills shoes bigger than it should, and is rather cheap (not even talking about the X100 and X100S which I think, if you can find them at the right price, are two of the best photographic deals you can make right now). And if you want a really sharp image and good AF performance, then the X100V is REALLY good in that regard. It even has new film sims, tilt screen and is finally weather sealed (it took them a damn minute !)
I'm not saying that the X100F is a bad camera. It's a very good one in fact, but everything about it just either smell "what could have been" or leaves a bigger hole in your wallet than it feels it should. If you have an X100F and you're happy with it, I'm no one to tell you that you're wrong. You're right to love it, because that's yours, you feel good with it and that's absolutely fine. However, if someone is looking after an X100 camera, the X100F is definitely the one to avoid imho.
