@@abramsullivan7764 LOL no. Venomous creatures inflict their venom with (usually) a bite. Poisonous creatures are toxic to eat. Brazilian tree frogs don't kill you when they bite you. Cobra meat is safe to eat.
What is sad about the death by dog is that in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare they actually have animations for when a dog attacks you and kills you. That game came out in 2007...
I'm not taking a nasty or vindictive tone, but I suspect what she meant was - there were no *female* iconic characters, and with today's obsession with ID politics, that's as good as not having any iconic characters. Either way you cut the cake, it's laughable. No iconic characters?? Uhh… Price: Nikolai, we gotta get Soap out of here! Nikolai: Da! I know a place!
@@sgtbaker2072 I figured that’s what she meant but she should come out and say it, because it’d be true. I 100% agree there is not a single memorable character in this series that isn’t a gruff white guy. Trying to be noncommittal though invalidates the point as it usually does. And on top of that Vanguard didn’t change this by throwing out what isn’t even their first case of “we have Sniper Wolf at home”. They just wanna say they’re being progressive while really they continue catering to the insecure white frat bro audience, which makes sense given Activision is run by insecure white frat bros.
A German soldier seeing a black British commando prisoner and then just laughing at him, would be 10 million times more effective than any shitty 5 minute speech about how racism is bad. It would immediately say what it need too. It would immediately give the player a reason to hate the enemy in less than 2 seconds.
He could've just said: "HAHAHAHAHAHAH, YOU'RE BLACK! HOW CAN BLACK MAN BE IN A BATTLEFIELD?!" ...and then the rest of the soldiers start laughing too. And boom, he'd be a memorable villain.
The fact that you seek reasons online in 2022 to "hate the enemy" means that you have no business discussing about these things. Stick to your woke rainbows, unicorns and safe bubbles.
"Call of Duty has never had any iconic characters." I don't even play Call of Duty and I still know who Captain Price is. This has the same energy as when Kathleen Kennedy claimed that Lucasfilm didn't have any expanded universe material to pull inspiration from when writing new stories.
I played mw2, ghosts, World at war and black ops 1, 2 and 3. With that fact I present the people I know without much thinking Price, Makarov, Zakaev, Sandman, Soap, Ghost, Roach (kind of), Elias, Rorke, Mason, Woods, Dimitri Petrenkov, Resnov, Dragovich, Grafchenko and finally Steiner. WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT WITH NO CHARACTERS?!
"It brings back the intense, visceral, boots on the ground gameplay" No, that was World at War. And World at War was just vicious, gives no shits, and just displays a story of how war was really like for the soldiers that fought in it. It was simple, but it was dark, brutal and outright monstrous.
The American section on the campaign was more intense and vicious for me due to the Japanese suddenly appearing out of nowhere with their bayonets charging at you. Yeah, World at War is the best.
YEAH! An OG COD Players who have writing talent probably better at writing vanguard story than that woman who said COD Never have iconic characters and she is holding position most COD player can only dreamed of (Being a part in his or her favorite game development)
I know who Price and Mason are and I only played 2 COD games. I’m in my 40s and play mostly sims and tactical shooters, those were absolutely iconic characters. They’re literally hiring people who don’t play video games.
"We never had any iconic characters to latch onto." *Soap, Nikolai, Price, Ghost, Mason, Woods, Hudson, Resnov, Yuri, Makarov, and Ramirez laughing beyond the grave*
Exactly. Are they forgetting that they just rebooted Modern Warfare and Black Ops purely on the fact that Captain Price, Ghost, and Woods are such recognizable flagship characters?
Are any of them WW2 people though? I don't know Call of Duty Lore because...there really isn't one. It's a joke. LOL Thats why their Multiplayer is so good, because nobody cares about the Story/Single Player.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 1 and 2 had incredible campaigns. With some of the most memorable characters and moments. One being the sniper/pripyat map.
I mean, the charachters are more like walking tropes, not really charachters. Eg price is just a generic stoic british tough officer; it doesnt even matter that theres like 20 of him during time, theyre all the same. So its not completely wrong. Although, I guess the robot in Infinite (advanced?) warfare actually had some basic personality and an arc? Like Rogue one; kinda ironic, the robot is the most human charachter in the story.
@@termitreter6545 we humans like to anthropomorphize things. A lot of us think robots are cool, so I can see why they are made with human characteristics in stories.

I was watching AJ play through the campaign on Twitch, and was really amused by the lack of attention to detail in the game. AS-44s in Stalingrad, Volkssturmgewehrs in North Africa and the Japanese using STG-44s and MG42s? What the hell? I'm not asking for 100% documentary-esque historical accuracy, but at least give the soldiers period-accurate weapons. Even some of the cutscenes didn't make sense, why would the Americans need a Japanese plane to bomb the enemy defenses? Did the Marines somehow forget about the 20 aircraft carriers that would have been stationed off-shore?
I almost died when Joe mentioned bs marketing and compared to what's in actual game also this is another epic rewiev that I can watch few times over and over
In CoD Big Red One, the story spans from 1942 to 1945. In '42, you see M3 Stuarts. In '44, then you see M4 Shermans and StG44s. This was the care Activision used to have.
Remember when cutscenes were utilized in games to set the tone and atmosphere and maybe offer some brief exposition about what you're doing and why? Yeah, me too.
Thing is, if they didn't rush to throw something out every single year, they could accomplish both. But they know it'll make money so fuck it. Who am I? One of my favorite games is the Metro series where the game play is just as good as the storyline.
Crazy how Treyarch has been getting the shit end of the stick and getting less and less dev time and YET somehow some way treyarch has still been the best dev team
The people who buy the garbage allow the garbage to keep existing so I would say the former are the worse, if they stopped buying it at least this endless cycle could actually end
“We have two more stories that we want to tell with these characters” So why didn’t you tell these stories in this game? Oh I know why, because FUCK YOU GIVE ME MONEY!
The fact is, almost all indie games never have these issues, it’s like the old days where you can just pick up a game regardless of cost or validity and enjoy it to your hearts content. It’s not to say all AAA developers are bad, but I wouldn’t mind some being out of business.
Seems like a lot of AAA developers are cheaping out because they know they have a reliable fanbase that will eat garbage up like nothing. It actually hurts me because they have the resources to develop amazing games but choose not to out of pure profit. I can't imagine what Escape from Tarkov would be like with AAA level funding and development.
Well, that's not true tbh. Almost all indie games are trash, so we don't know or hear their names. As they don't have a budget for advertising, we don't play or even come across hundreds of stupid indie games. We only hear the good ones, which is pretty few compared to the whole indie sector, and that's why we think indie games are likely to be more successful about innovation in the end. But we hear almost every AAA, so... it's not accurate to criticize like that IMO.
you can't just compare them to the 1% of the 1% of the indies that actually reach the mainstream and pretend that somehow if you have very few people working on it then no stupid decisions happen. A smaller scope and creative freedom surely help removing what's unnecessary to create a more focused, catered experience but the "indies are better" wagon is mostly full of ignorance.
All AAA devs not named Nintendo are terrible. Someone made a good video about it the but to save time, game companies nowadays can "update" a game after release, so releasing an unfinished product is ok.
Captain John Price, John "Soap" McTavish, Gaz (Kyle Garrick is one of the best re-image charterers), Ghost, Lt. Vasquez, SSgt. Griggs, Sgt Paul Jackson. Not to mention Sgt Frank Woods, Alex Mason

@@MetalGearBronya oh yes for sure mate. It seemed like they didn’t know what COD was, and what people expect from a COD game. Like they didn’t want to offend to cause controversy or stir up a discussion or debate. I remember that one Clean House mission in MW was heavy on me, I was playing that with my dad sitting next to me and I shot the lady with the detonator and he went “did you just shoot her!?!” And we had that reaction so many times. It takes less effort and time to create cutscenes with motion capture to immerse the player, than to actually design playable levels. - Activision 2021
I mean this game only had less than 2 years of Development Sledgehammer games and Raven Software were supposed to make a Vietnam based game in 2020 but Treyarch took over that game and made it Black Ops Cold War.Thats why that game didn't run on MW Engine.I mean Vanguard is like COD 3 how COD 3 was made under 6 months. I'm a True COD player not an Average COD player who plays Warzone and 6v6 MP. Go watch Tom Hendersons leak on Vanguard now he's completely silent about BF2042. Okay so here's how you "approach a game like a movie" and succeed. Make those cool cinematics ,then find every part you can make playable /have happen while we are in control and have the more set up shots be short "we lose control, see the shot then gain control" moments and boom players love it.
Why can't a company make Steel Battalion:Heavy Armour but you are a soldier on the ground? Having Mechs fight while you are shooting troops on the ground, mech rounds splitting your teammates in half with blood everywhere showing the chaos in war I'm that universe?
Remember how in WaW how they introduced you to Reznov as Dimitri by escaping death, him teaching you how to snipe, then having the epic fight through the city?
That was the good time when they mimicked good, classic war movies like Enemy at the Gate's Stalingrad scenes. When video games stopped mirroring good ole classic cinema of the 2000s-2010s, they became a bore. Blacks Ops 1 ripped some of their best scenes from classic movies like Deer Hunter. Hipsters behind the script make it so silly, don't realize people actually love mature topics.
@@camjohnson5517 Dunkirk was definitely iconic but not for its 'battle' scenes, more for its cinematography and dramatic tension. There's also 1917, but COD has never made a WW1 game to this date. Wouldn't suit their multiplayer gunplay cookie cutter. I think the best COD's were inspired by action/war films and added the right amount of video game style and story. Nowadays they have way too much creative liberties.
Honesty, I never trust a studio that tries to make games "like movies." I'm not a CoD fan so I didn't know about that until this video. Movies are reactive (audience reacting to what's happening in the movie), video games are interactive (audience is interacting with what is happening in the game). Failure to understand that means that your game is damned.
The Order 1886 is a perfect example. Actual gameplay only made up about a quarter of the whole experience. The rest was just cutscenes, walking and QTEs.
A movie can be very cinematic while also being interactive. It can also be very linear but still fun and interactive, but a lot of teams either don’t have the time or the ability to allow you to interact with it while still showing the story and pushing you to move forward. Easier to add a waypoint and a cutscene trigger than it is to make the environment such that it leads you to where you need to go, and the events are interesting enough that you’re gonna look at and understand them without being forced into a cutscene or just have control taken away from you.
The thing is even movie are getting better they're also making show set on WWII and sometimes their female soldiers but it believable of why their there watch Warsaw 1944, downfall, and others on Amazon and Netflix But cod wanna be stuck in the 90s with the Pearl harbor approach because big explosion if they're going back to their root everything would be more grounded
The reason this game still bothers me is because of this: My older cousin (who is not a gamer mind you) got me this for Christmas one year. Of course I was grateful but I also felt bad for her because she had no idea what she was buying and just picked something new out. (No I did not ask for it) and bless her heart for the consideration. About 2 months later I get the chance to trade it in. You know what they gave me? TWENTY DOLLARS. that’s it. Twenty bucks for a game that cost my cousin 89.99CAD

Part of the “memorable character” thing that they missed is that for the longest time, COD was a lot like the Sherlock Holmes books, in that, the main character/protagonist is not actually the viewpoint character. Sherlock Holmes is the main character, but watson is the narrator. It’s the same here, the true main characters were the Reznovs and Prices and Gazs and whatnot, rather than the player character, and this was actually very effective, it worked with how the game operates. The only outlier here is Soap, and even then, we only know him from seeing him from an alternate view in MW3 and Price’s reaction to him. But Soap didn’t need to be the star of the show, in fact, it was perfect that he wasn’t. Once you start creating “star” playable characters in COD, the player just taps out, bc they’re not there for that. COD built its status on faceless, storyless MCs. It works.
Lots of players didn't realize that the COD series had pushed the bar (player taste) of AAA Military Single Player FPS Campaign to a level that cause this entire genre dying out, just like what Mario series have done to the 3D Platformer...
Captain Price. Soap. Ghost. Gaz. Roach. And also Mason, Woods, Hudson, Weaver, Reznov, and even now with cold war, I'd argue Adler was made as an iconic character. I could name more
15:23 what a dumb statement. Video games done this better because you can actually INTERACT with the story while in movies you can only WATCH the story.
The issue is simple Joe. The masses have gotten too attached to mindless multiplayer, so they'll buy the game even if the campaign is terrible *because they don't care about the campaign.*
@Best Montage except it does matter, while many play multiplayer, not everyone does and in top of that it's a third of the game, so your either paying 60-70$ for 2/3 of a game or you pay 60-70$ for a full game, which would you rather have for the same price 2/3 or the full package being good
@Best Montage no, I don't think your opinion counts for 99% of players so get off your high horse and look at these games objectively, it never had to be cut this and cut that, it never had to be half ass this so this parts good, it wasn't until recent when such a stupid sentiment arisen when all the games are either partially good or not at all, I don't remember BO1 and 2 ever needing to sacrifice a fine campaign for a multiplayer, hell they even added arcade mode in bo1, did that sacrifice any quality l, no it really didn't, now people like you are the problem who only think the part they like should be good instead of the whole, that's such a stupid narrow minded thought that it's actually kinda painful to see throughout the fanbase.
"No iconic characters" I haven't played Call of Duty in years and can still name a few, like Price, Soap, Reznov, Woods, Mason, Ghost, Dimirti, Roebuck and Roach. And that's just off the top of my head.
He’s obviously talking about the creation of new iconic characters not the same ones youve been spoon fed and have been rebooted to get your attention. All those characters are iconic from cods golden days literally didn’t name anyone from bo3 and up
I feel even that may be too generous. Keep in mind 1. Its 2021 2.this game costs 10 dollars more than previous (and better) games. And 3. How much of a downgrade the games have been becoming. So bad. Borderline 2/10 imo.
I was surprised with all that complaining he gave it a four, definitely sounded closer to a 3 the way he described it. Guess he's still got a big huge soft spot for military themed stuff.
unfortuneatly there are many shills ADVERTISING this game and praising it which is sad. game is miles worse even than cold war. cold war is like good mix between wooden old cods sprinkled with MW2019 mechanics. this. this is just MW2019 with WW2 mod.

They want to break down minority walls, which is fine, but with stupid ideas that don't work. They're mixing the two into an AGENDA, and the idiocy needs to stop. Because this is just the latest case, both in gaming and Hollywood.
The fact that they actually stated CoD doesn't have any memorable main characters really shows the true colors of these devs. They don't even know their own franchise. I would wager plenty of them have never even played a CoD game. This game couldn't be more manufactured and passion starved if it tried. If anyone is interested in playing a game as good as those cut scenes, it does exist. It's called Battlefield 1.
i think it's not about not knowing their franchise. It's the usual marketing crap. Like when a franchise that had, for example, a well liked and overall well received female character suddenly gets the announcement that the next installment "Will finally have the first cool, major, awesome great female character In the history of the franchise!!!". It's basically them trying to gaslight the consumers into THINKING the new character(s) is as awesome and deep and blablabla as they creators want the people to perceive.
Or....just play World at War. No big cutscenes, but it's still a brutal shooter. Just watch out. On veteren, the AI tends to throw buckets of grenades at ya.
@@aweshetdima2157 More like they're all tethered to your leg and all shots are magnetized to you. I had to cheese the AI so much to beat it on veteran.
The fact that the majority of players will sit on ship haus 24/7 to camo grind for warzone, a game mode which is currently unplayable through bugs, says a lot about the franchise
There are so many incredible true stories from WW2 - I would rather play missions based upon documented real events. Let me be a machine gunner in Sgt. John Basilone's division on Guadalcanal. Let me fly Norman Jack "Dusty" Kleiss's dive bomber to hit 3 Japanese carriers at Midway. Historical re-enactment would be far more impactful than this fictional special ops squad. EDIT: Yes, I too would also like real POV characters and events from ALL combatant sides. Play as Soviet women tank commanders and Night Witches pilots, Germans crushing Operation Market Garden, Australians in New Guinea... My primary point was give me historical accuracy/authenticity. There is plenty of diverse representation to be found and highlighted from the existing history without resorting to fiction. The first examples that came to mind were just US American because of the last podcast I listened to.
COD Finest Hour did a great job of telling stories of the characters we'd play as. I wish they'd go back to that storytelling instead of the garbage they have now.

It's funny that MW2 characters didn't have these cinematic introductions. You just played the game and the characters just stood out through the storyline themselves. RIP Ghost.
The MW2 campaign had a 90’s action packed story and with action packed levels, with alpha male characters that looked aesthetically badass. They were socially inept, and didn’t say cringe Superman dialogues. All the spec ops characters were all serious and on that Sigma grindset to complete the missions they were tasked.

They might as well just turn CoD into a movie series. The stories are decent action military thrillers and, clearly, making movies is what they really want to do anyway.

A lot of people think that people hate on COD because “it’s cool to hate on the popular game.” The truth is we hate on the newer CODs because we’ve *seen* better! We’ve seen how great this franchise can be! To continue from what you said in your comment, I consider the Modern Warfare trilogy, the first two Black Ops games and World At War to be masterpieces, with great stories, characters, gameplay and more. There used to be a great deal of passion put into COD, where no one pulled their punches and really made you think about the horrors of war and what it does to people. But now COD is a literal cash cow, a sloppy unappealing money maker that hasn’t had a semblance of a soul for years! Except for Modern Warfare 2019 that was really good. We don’t hate COD because it’s popular, we hate COD because we’ve seen it do better, and we want people to relive that era all over again.

A movie can be very cinematic while also being interactive. But Soap didn’t need to be the star of the show, in fact, it was perfect that he wasn’t. Once you start creating “star” playable characters in COD, the player just taps out, bc they’re not there for that. COD built its status on faceless, storyless MCs. It works.
