I'm a huge Halo fan. Love Infinite, but Joe is right. The devs needs to be reminded repeatedly how bad their progression system and store is so they will work fast to fix it. It's frustrating as hell that they did this this way. What were they thinking? Of course people would hate it. We told them all summer during the betas it was awful.
It's obvious what they were thinking. The game cost $100 million to develop and they gave it to you basically for free. They have to make that money back somehow. So they're going to severely limit unlockables, force you to use the in- game store and jack up the prices on everything. They've basically taken the mobile game blueprint and used it on a triple A game. Expect the same from the next Gears of War game and every other first party multiplayer game coming on GamePass. 343 and Microsoft will probably actually make more on Infinite because of how much some people will spend in the in-game store than they did by selling almost 10 million copies of Halo 5.
they were thinking you'd reach in to your wallet and pay up big budget games are not sustainable on a game pass budget it just makes absolutely no sense
Every single time I hear the Dev's say "that was an oversight" or "we are working to correct this mistake" I just want to see someone who worked on this game sit down and say outright "We thought you would enjoy paying $20 for the color red on one armor core, 3 times in a row"
tbf I think the honest take would be "yeah the fucking morons who pay us had a hissy fit when we told them this was unreasonable and told us to put this in or they would scrap the project"
EA: "building a single-level version of Anthem to demo at E3 and labelling said demo as being captured "in real-time and in-engine," when in reality no actual game was in existence, was just an oversight :)
I'm so happy to see that Joe knows whats going on with modern gaming, so glad you put in the clip of 343 saying you only unlock through the game. Thank you Joe
Yeah AJ called this bs out since the beginning 💪🏽 and a lot of people didn’t believe him back in the day and now 10 years later we are all swimming in micro transactions hell in majority of games now.
It's sad to hear we are even saying "it's a good starting point" when 10 years ago, we would never. It goes to show how the gaming industries have changed for the worst from releasing a dedicated finished game from release with passion for the gamers, to a business model used to consume more and enjoy less, and to see what greed they can get away with.
That ENTIRE multiplayer rant from 29:02 onward was one of the most satisfying and cathartic things I've ever heard about this game. Thank you joe for consistently being such a great outlet for all my anger towards the games I care deeply about. I seriously need a cigarette after that one lol
@@alwaysdisputin9930 for some people it tastes like baton chocolate bars, with all the added benefits of many types of long term body damage ;^] like failling lungs and decreased sex drive/erections and the like
@@alwaysdisputin9930 Because at its core, smoking is an addiction. Once most people start, even if they know it's bad and know it can kill them, they can't stop, they're powerless to control their addiction. Best thing you can do is to not start at all. Being burned by my mom's cigarettes when I was young (accidentally of course) and seeing how quickly she went through a pack, was enough to convince me to never want to light one. Just turned 29, have never lit a cigarette my entire life.
Joe is right about 343’s awful progression. I only wish he had brought attention to the major problem of cheaters not being addressed especially in ranked MP.
I didn't like reaches ranking system though. Play long enough and you'll be carrying 12 year Olds who have the noble rank. It was literally a 99% chance if you played with high leveled people they were garbage
Even that customization system had its flaws, anyone with enough time in their hands could unlock anything and everything. A specific item didn't mean anything. Halo 3 was where they nailed it. To earn items, you had to complete specific tasks. If someone had the Katana, you knew they were legit. Now customization is an abomination because you can do whatever you want, sort of, but you have to pay for it. It's ridiculous.
Getting t-bagged by a dude with the flaming helmet "back in the day" was a sign that you were going to need to step up your game to get revenge. Now, it just means they spent $12 in the cosmetics store....
When you got crushed by someone wearing hard-to-get gear, you felt that you deserved it because you knew he was just plain better than you. For someone with exceptionally special stuff, it was kind of like "Woah! It's an honor to be killed by you!"
I have been watching your videos for years mates! and I definitely freaked out hearing my voice in this review haha The multiplayer still feels like it's lacking content such as maps and their environments, while the customization in the game is reaching new peaks of microtransaction cost for basic items & colors. So here's to hoping that they actually create meaningful updates to the multiplayer to allow players to enjoy the core gameplay that halo infinite has to offer. Thanks AngryJoe
As someone who has supported Halo from the the beginning. No coop campaign felt like a slap in the face to the fans. That being said the gameplay saved this game and holds it up in its own right. Definitely 343s best work and I have hope for the franchise again after the mess that was Halo 4 and 5. Now let's make good on these promises 343...

@@Deodank That's not what "earning" has ever meant in a gaming context. In games, the term "earn" has always meant through doing something in the game. You can't just abandon context like that.
Micro-transactions are literally the worst thing in history to happen to gaming. Devs can easily make enough money without them. Fallen Order is already getting a sequel. Devs just can’t help but be greedy Still would love to see a developer justify why we should pay extra for cosmetic items when we already paid £60/£70 for the game
Exactly bro, I never understand why a company like Xbox doesn’t even try to sell some games at a loss or small profit in exchange for good publicity/growing the Xbox fanbase. Seems most of these companies play the short instead of long game when it comes to game development.
it's not that paying extra for cosmetics is really a problem by itself, it's that there's not way to earn something comparable just by playing. you should be able to get decent stuff from the game and only maybe pay for a bit of more extravagant items to help support the game. servers and future content cost money to produce too. People often forget that inflation is a thing that has not been directly applied to video games for like 15 years now, and although I know these 'live service' BS stores are not the answer to that no one wants a game to go up to 70-80+ dollars at launch to cover the difference. we've had about a 60$ price tag on new "AAA" games for over a decade where literally anything else in retail would've gone up but 15-20% by now at least. Is this a crappy way to do business?... maybe... but think of alternatives here... why people think that games can't possibly be getting more expensive to develop especially for bigger companies with more people working on it. they want all these talented people to just suck it up and make more and more game but not have to pay more for it. it's like free refills at a restaurant, if a place has that and for expense reasons has to suddenly take it away everyone would get PISSED off and a lot would stop going there cause they think they're missing value from the experience
I love the devs talk about how the players feedback is slowly helping them come up with a functional progression system for multiplayer..... meanwhile, games like Halo Reach had a perfect system already. Why not do something like that? Oh yeah.... that doesn't make them $$$
@@nathanweaver5654 point is all the older installments perfected the balance of fun and didn’t need to nickel n dime us for it. Most you paid for was map packs and that is much better then to have to pay for simple color shading now.
@@nathanweaver5654 Pretty sure he was talking about the progression. I agree Infinite's gameplay is closer to the originals than reach which I prefer. But Reach as a game was a full package. Forge, co-op, customs, customisation, progression. We just needed Reach's systems with Infinite's gameplay etc and we're golden.
@@nathanweaver5654 You can go back and play Halo Reach in the Master Chief Collection. It’s miles better than what is in Infinite currently: more maps, modes/playlists, better Weapons that are more consistent, Vehicles actually aren’t made out of tissue paper, and deeper and more fulfilling customization than in Infinite.
This is top level reviewing. Appreciating the good qualities and acknowledging them, but never backing down from calling these companies out on their greed and systems designed to manipulate people into opening up their wallets. Video games have turned into platforms that are practically slot machines.
One of the main reasons I still play and mod Skyrim the community of passionate skilled modders that work tirelessly for free in most cases just so others can enjoy a game the way they were meant to be played.
The problem is that the gaming industry keeps those kinds of people out because they wouldn't make money for free. Modders are the people you need to have in the gaming industry, I promise you we'd get better games.
Halo infinite is like a restaurant that has amazing food, except there are no tables, no seats, no utensils, no condiments, and a bathroom that is broken.
Good campaign, kinda gets weird towards the end with the mention of the Endless and how they're more of a threat than the Flood yet never showing them much but the game has a lot missing from it that Bungie's Halo had: missing UI for multiplayer w/ matchmaking lobbies, multiple game modes, BTB doesn't even work right now, no forge or co-op. Feels half baked but hopefully this fix it in time to retain the base otherwise everyone's going back to their battle royale. I just find it insane that it took them 6 years to release this and in the same amount of time Bungie released Halo 2 and 3 complete.
I mean they need to set up the next "big bad" somehow. And 2/3rds of the game was apparently cut so it makes sense why it happened. Just hope that DLC is free, though it will most likely be included in gamepass at least
Bungie also had horrendous crunch stories that are still in practice to this day. Would rather developers take their time than abuse employees. Also 6 years includes a brand new game engine
6:26 I posted that clip on the Halo subreddit the week of the “beta” launch to point out how unfulfilled that promise was. It quickly started to snowball with tons of upvotes and comments only to be deleted by the mods for being ”Misleading Information” seemingly not realizing the irony. Thankfully other similar posts quickly replaced it ensuring the false promises couldn’t be swept under the rug.
Best review I've seen of this game so far, Finally someone that has addressed all the negatives. Give me a campaign like halo 2/3 and multiplayer customisation from Reach combined the gameplay of infinite and you'd have one of the best games ever made... now if only they'd actually do it :/

In the Halo universe, nothing is "more dangerous" than the Flood. The Flood were why the Rings were built in the first place. That's what the whole series is built upon.
Thank you!!!!! That's what I was thinking... and that 1 scene were they say "flood? No something worse" like what is worse than the flood?!?!? Then they give us these space octopuses...give me a break
I think that's the inherent problem with trying to constantly escalate the threat to the entire Halo universe. The Flood was built up through all the lore and extended media as this unrelenting, all-consuming force that was simply only _contained_ by the Halo array. Even the events of Halo 3 didn't entirely wipe them out, if you go by Halo Wars 2 n' such. So where does one go from there? So far, each mainline 343 game has presented different ideas as to what the next Big Bad *could* be. Halo 4 gave us the Didact, with a sort of "return" of the Forerunners in a sense, though it was a bit sloppy in-game, and they ultimately finished him off in comics between games. Halo 5 gave us the interesting twist of making Cortana the villain and forging her own army with "The Created" as a whole brand-new threat utilizing repurposed Forerunner tech, which on paper would've been neat to see expanded upon if, again, it wasn't executed sloppily and then "wrapped up" off-screen. And that brings us to....here. The Endless. Something that has essentially came _entirely_ out of left field and being a whole-ly *new* concept to the _ancient_ Halo universe. I'll admit, I myself am personally (cautiously) intrigued to see where this plotline goes, honestly. There were a couple instances in the latter part of the campaign where we hear clips from the Harbinger directly that had me like, ".....That was the _exact_ wording and cadence that the *_GRAVEMIND_* said that line in the past," among a couple other vibes I picked up where The Endless just _miiiiiiight_ be tied to the Flood somehow? Who knows, only time will tell. Ultimately though, I feel like we need a breather from these intergalactic threats. Tone it all down some notches, tell some smaller stories with smaller threats across the Halo universe (gimme another ODST or somethin' for gods' sakes), _then_ start building back up to another Big Bad that _doesn't_ entirely stem from the ancient universe. Or something, I 'unno. If Halo as a franchise is going to keep pushing into the future, it needs some mix-up with variety or such, or we're going to end up with an entire reboot at some point, and that might just completely kill the franchise.
Time for some sweet microtransactions! And with a good review from Joe, ripping off playe- I mean selling fairly priced skins to players will be easier than ever!
I remember when I used to play the older Halos and a friends brother would come on and he'd have this badass helmet and armour, you'd recognise him by he's helmet and then you'd go and look at how much work you had to put in to acquire the armour set and it would add to the competitiveness of the game because you wanted to keep playing to get cooler sets and you'd recognise people as being good players by their armour. Now it's just, oh he just brought it, nothing to it, a real shame.
@@smokeemifyagotem8851 And the future ones did, and everyone loved them. It's fine if you like a worse experience for more money but the rest of us don't. You also read my whole story just to tell me I'm "crying" irony.
37:20 - I genuinly belive that there was no campaign until they got Joe Staten back at 343. The map to me feels like a big Battle Royale map, with a campaign strapped to it.
Sadly, it's the other way around. There was a bigger map with a more diverse set of environment's, much like the reveal trailer, and they massively scaled back in scope because they couldn't meet quality and content standards. And hell, no we know they barely pulled off the scaled back version.
I find it genuinely bizarre that 343 worked on MCC for as long as they did. Yet they didn't carry over any of the quality of life updates and progression system into Infinite.
it shows i think how the suits / corpo side of ms and 343i probably have to tick off on anything, which is why MCC was such a slow work in progress. I have no doubt Infinite will go just the same way. Come back to infinite in a year and it a be getting really good.
I was more ticked off at that when I saw that it was ten minutes long. With the advertising of some powder no one was actually going to use and that dang skit taking of a part of those ten to eleven minutes, I was finding it to be the worst and laziest video he’s ever came out with. Glad that’s not the case this time.
Never played any Halo game before, but I liked the campaign of Infinite so much that I subscribed to Game Pass and completed all previous game. And not just the master chief trilogy, but Reach, and ODST too. They are masterpiece, and I completed them like masterpieces. I love them!
too bad you only joined after the soul left the franchise. I'm sorry but 343 is the best you're getting & their storytelling is anything but "a masterpiece" ....Wouldn't be the end of the world if they weren't shit at multiplayer support as well. Sorry you missed the good times of great Halo online, at least you can experience an older, more well-constructed version of the franchise still. From one former fan to a new one: don't get your hopes up kid. The magic is gone.
This was a pretty solid, on point review of the game. I'm glad the gameplay is solid but it sucks that they released the game in such a half baked state.
I was in pretty much all of the flight tests on pc, and people were constantly complaining about the challenge system. 343 playing dumb and acting surprised over this issue is nothing short of frustrating.
They didn't play dumb - they literally acknowledged it in their blog posts about the flight feedback, but said the same thing they are saying now: Comprehensive changes would take time. It's pretty obvious that the game was being worked on right up until release and came in super hot, so there probably wasn't any overheard to throw "scrap and rebuild your entire progression system" in there between September and November. The real question is why they thought such a system was a good idea to begin with, since the shortcomings of it were painfully obvious. But I wouldn't be shocked if that was a function of simply running out of time too. It's clear the game had serious development issues somewhere along the way, when you're still having to delay Forge and co-op after a six year dev cycle.
@@Scottoest Nah bro. You just said it. It's painfully obvious the challenge and progression systems were awful but they went with them anyway. They are playing dumb cuz they won't admit they were testing the waters

Honestly I think a 7/10 is a perfect rating. Gameplay is completly solid, the music is epic, and the atmosphere was 100% Halo... but the game has a lot of flaws. Multiplayer is missing a lot of content, the store is grossily over-priced, and it is dumb how much customization is stripped from you. Campaign-wise the story left a lot to be demanded. Oh you want to kick Atriox's ass? How about his right hand man? Who are the Endless and why are they scarier than the Flood? Oh look funny grunts! We promise you that you don't need to know Halo lore to understand the story! Umm... but please play Halo 5, Halo 4, Halo Wars 2, and read most of the EU so our most impactful moments feel actually impactful. What happened between Halo 5 and Infinite? Umm... look more funny grunts!
@dj Kplus What a terrible reply. As a consumer I'm allowed to voice my opinions of the products I buy. Sorry if the issues I had with the game hurt your feelings. But facts are facts and 343 is charging $60 for just the campaign, so it begs to reason that this better be the best Halo Campaign experience, which sadly it's not. There are missing features. The biggest two being mission select, and Co-op play. That already hurts the price tag right there. As cool as the open-world was, I feel overall it hurts the game more than benefits it. I felt the open-world started becoming more obvious padding than immersive. I loved that it reminded me of the level Halo from CE, but that level didn't overstay is welcome. Like if that level was 50% of CE like the Open-world is in Infinite, it wouldn't have been as memberable being the first time you stepped onto the Halo ring. Anyways, you're right, I can't program video games, but after playing them for almost 30 years I feel I have a pretty good scope on what's a good game, and what isn't worth the $60-$70 price tag. Infinite is a solid game, but deeply flawed. Campaign isn't worth the price tag compared to other single-player titles on the current market.
@dj Kplus Saying $60 for just the campaign is not misleading as that's the only thing, outside of the optional "Microtransactions" and the Battle Passes, you pay for. The Multiplayer is free-to-play, so yes the $60-$70 goes only towards the campaign. Now if the Multiplayer was not Free-to-play I would argue that the $60-$70 is a better bang for your buck. Yes, some people have Game Pass and they can play the game fully through the service, but not everyone has Game Pass. I for example don't. I already own a PS5 and a gaming PC, I'm not gonna go out of my way to buy a Series X or Subscribe to a service for the only game I'm interested in from Microsoft. I'm sure there are others out there that feel the same as me as well. I agree that I would also like to play a game that's 90% bug free on release, but I would also like to play a game that's also complete at release. If that means the developers have to put a little bit more time, I do not care. Especially during this ongoing Pandemic, I would much rather see a game finished to completion and then spend my money, rather than invest my money now and hope they add that feature in later. Basically if I'm gonna drop $60-$70 on a game, I would like all the promised features in that game. Like imagine buying a brand new table, open it up, and find a note from the company saying they'll ship the legs to all the buyers once they produce them? I personally don't like dropping money on incomplete items. If you're satisfied with your purchase then be satisfied. I can't stop you, and nothing I say can stop you. However, it seems Angry Joe and a group of people find it all a bit wanting. Obviously 343 has stated this game supposedly has a 10 year plan, so there's going to Campaign Expansions to well... expand upon the campaign and story, but as an entry level story and campaign that's meant to hook you in for future installments, it's pretty meh.
@dj Kplus It's pretty obvious with the way the Free-to-Play Multiplayer is built like... well... a Free-to-Play game, the funding from the Store and Battle Passes is meant to be the Multiplayer's main source of income. Once they get their whales, it'll start printing them money even if the majority of the player base buys next to nothing. Like-wise the Campaign is meant to pay for the hard dedicated work of the team as a whole and hopefully fund future campaigns in this 10 years of Infinite. As I said though, it's a bit of a stretch that the main campaign, the only part of the game you spend the money on, is worth that buy in price. I'm glad you enjoyed the game through Game Pass, but it's hard to compare your borderline free experience of the game when some others went ahead and bought the game. Perhaps if I played it through a service, I would share a similar opinion. But after spending the AAA entrance fee, and letting it digest over the past month it's iffy. The open world eventually got a little stale; I can't remember most of the levels like I can every stage from the original Trilogy; the story was a little hard to follow; there's really not a lot of spectacle outside of the open world, it would've been crazy hunting scarabs in such a big playing field; and the surprise third party villains had no purpose to the story, and they took the spotlight from The Banished, the more interesting villains. Please don't think I hate this game as I don't. I agreed with Joe's 7/10 rating, which is still a solid rating. It's just a shame that this game was so close to being that amazing game, but sadly it has its flaws that hold it back and that's ok.
This is actually the most barebones Halo ever released but at least they got the foundation right. Hopefully sometime during their 10 year plan they intend to finish the game maybe at year 7 if we are lucky.
Yeah the campaign was a joke, the engine also just feels like a big empty version of the old one. Which is cool but they just gave us one giant map of the SAME fucking textures everywhere!
I don't know who programmed this game but no other has crashed on me as many times as Halo Infinite did. This game is not finished, at all. Wont be surprised when the articles telling us about what a mess Infinites developement was come out.
Its actually not. Forge was always added after launch, and there's at least 10 different PVP maps. The campaign is roughly the same size as Halo 1 and 2, and as big as 3 if you do the optional content. The PVP itself is *fun* to play. The two flubs are: no splitscreen co-op, and the multiplayer monetization/progression are awful. Both i expect to be fixed, but his 7/10 is a very fair rating. This can be a 9/10 in 6 months time thankfully.
@@elthionel Obviously im exaggerating for comedy sake however thats what it feels like coming from something like Halo 3. And this game needs a lot more than 6 months to be a full fledged Halo tittle and lets be honest forge will probably be delayed and that's all we have to look forward to in the meantime. Look at literally any information at all including what the devs have said themselves. They are in a state of emergency right now because they made a live service game with live service monetization and time sync but no live service content to give the players. I mean they barely even got a community update out and its been 12 days since the new year, meanwhile, anyone that has even spawned in a match has something to say about it needing change. Bottom line is they have not a clue what they are doing right now, however, I do believe in the long run it will come around but right now the game is not it. I just question how Microsoft fumble their biggest IP for over a decade maybe its just 343 and they need to be cut.
Thank you Joe for fixing the review. Despite the current state of the multiplayer, I’ve been having a blast with this game, hopefully 343 can fix these issues

I saw a video where someone brought up a really good point. Without the grapple hook, traversing the campaign's world map would be almost painfully boring, because the map is so empty but the satisfaction of using the grapple distracts you from that. But that did make me think of something. The campaign's world map IS really empty, but could you imagine a Forge mode with the ENTIRE campaign world map available to build on? Now THAT would be really cool. If anyone knows the team at 343, maybe float that idea to them. Idk, if or how it would work, but it could be really awesome.
I think the emptiness of the world is somewhat overblown. If I ever saw an area and thought "I bet there is something cool there" there almost always was, even if it was just an abandoned marine camp. You can see things to do from virtually anywhere on the map. It's not like it's a barren landscape. To me, it felt just the right size, but I say that as someone who is completely burned out on open world games.
@@PerpetualSmile The few locations within the worldmap that have stuff are interesting, but the majority of the map is just open wilderness. Trees and rocks, maybe a river over here or some forerunner hexagonal columns over there. Don't get me wrong, it's pretty to look at, and there are some really cool locations sprinkled throughout, but if it weren't for Banished patrols to kill, and some fun forms of traversal, it would get boring really fast. Especially when the only reason to actually go to those interesting locations is to find some collectables. Try this experiment. Next time you get on to play some campaign, don't use the grapplehook or any vehicles and try to travel from one side of the map to the other. An open world should give you a reason to come back to it, to look around and explore, with interesting encounters and things to find. Outside of the bases all there really is to find are enemies to kill, and a bunch of collectables scattered around. Honestly, now that I think about it, it kind of feels like 343 tried to do something new with Halo, making the campaign open-world and the multiplayer free-to-play, without fully understanding what it takes to make great examples of either of those things. They didn't understand how to make a truly great open-world campaign, and they didn't understand how to make a truly great free-to-play multiplayer.
That's... not a good point. That's like saying, "If your car didn't have wheels, it actually wouldn't be very fast." Obviously traversal in Halo Infinite would be bland if you stripped it's core mechanic away. The game would also be short if you took all the levels out.
YES! YES YES YES YES YES! Forge world should be the freaking campaign map. That is such a sick idea! And, honestly? The grapple hook is literally, so satisfying. It's kind of funny. The people at 343 promised a return to form for halo multiplayer, which means no advanced movement, and then they stumbled on a form of advanced movement that's fun and exciting. Maybe multiplayer with all grapple hooks wouldn't be fun, but I kinda just wanna try it.
You would think Microsoft's flagship, console selling franchise could stray away from these overdone modern gaming trends that hurt the game, but nope. And with little content at launch to boot, even though the gameplay is superb. That "earned it" skit perfectly summed it up lmao.
What makes you think that? Gears 5 was even more sccummy then this when it comes to modern trends. Any microsoft exclusive is loaded with scummy microtransactions.
@@TylerMBuller12 Because you dont see nintendo or playstation doing these things with their exclusives and because of it their IP's are better (and they have more)
@@scarecrow4297 Ya alot of crappy games get above average scores that don't deserve it. Cod gets 8s and 9s every year and that game is crap. I think the core gameplay on these microsoft studios games is good but it's always ruined by them being half done and loaded with immersion breaking and greedy microtransactions. The people that support these practices don't care hence the higher scores. The review is spot on the story is dog shit but the gameplay is good while the multiplayer has that good gameplay the over all experience is hurt by lack of content and a horrid progression system ruined by monetization once again in a triple a game.
I agree that they should've let us play as a first level of the game surviving Atriox's attack on the Infinity in a big epic battle, as for the rest of the campaign my main complaint was rescuing and reorganizing all the UNSC marines didn't really impact the main story. I wish bringing back the UNSC on the Ring would unlock cutscenes and interactions with the UNSC forces, showing stuff like what could happen in the books if during Combat Evolved you played around Alpha Base with the ODSTs and Autumn's survivors, maybe doing side missions for them. I didn't mind that Pilot guy being annoying because to me, it showed a lotta patience on part of chief and how he was capable of showing understanding/compassion for people that've been through a lot. The Pilot wasn't even actual military which further justified his insubordinate behavior to me, he just was basically a civilian contractor stuck out here and going through an array of emotions uanble to cope with it. Chief was really showing a lotta empathy and patience for a Spartan II to have tolerated and helped build him up despite that. I also liked Atriox's mentor speeches in the story, cause I just felt it showed a side of the Banished that actually loved a good fight even if they lost, and could show respect to a fellow warrior. He fangirled for atriox yes, but he wasn't lacking enthusiasm the closer you got to fighting him either. He just wanted to fight hard, and die well.
I honestly haven’t had this much fun with an FPS gameplay wise in a while but after every match when I return to the menu it truly feels like a “Beta” with the missing features and snail pace progression.
@Popstar Ahri maybe your problem is setting the bar way too low. Saying it's completed compared to FUCKIN BATTLEFIELD?! That's a pretty terrible standard and accepting it is the reason why these unfinished launches keep happening over and over
Agreed with Chris. The gameplay is spot on but compared to the earlier Halo games, Infinite is shockingly devoid of features that were pretty much the core of the series. Where is the region select? Server browser? Pre and post-game lobbies? Why did players even had to bring up the fact that the game lacked the very BASIC game mode selection (it was just quick play and BtB at launch) that was in the series for almost 20 years now? Hell, some issues that were complained about in the beta flights are STILL not fixed in the final version. I love this game, but how anyone can consider it to be anything other than a beta at this stage is beyond me.
Unlocking left and right shoulders separately is just overkill. Grinded through this week's missions only to unlock a visor for a helmet you can only unlock after reaching a certain level in the event pass.
@@WZPlayer10 sorry, the unlock details in the armor hall are misleading. Even still, grinded the challenges for a visor to a helmet I cannot unlock until somewhere around February when the event comes back. Just a terrible cosmetic and progression system.
@@b_hak You said you have a visor for a helmet you can’t get till February. While you may not be able to get that helmet until then, don’t act like you can’t use it on the Hikeshi helmet.
This game gives me so many mixed emotions. Gameplay is maybe the best ever. But repetitive campaign missions and all the problems with multiplayer bring the whole experience down
If you really think about it. Even if it's a really good campaign they still got away with selling you $60 for just the campaign. The multiplayer is already free. This is actually just a clever way to charge more money without getting backlash from the microtransaction crap.
Yeah they should have charged $60 for the campaign and gave you all the battle pass included and charged for the battle pass if you just played the multiplayer only.
I mean giving the multiplayer to us for free was a shock!! You kidding me?? They could have charged us 60 for the story plus multiplayer like they have done with every halo in the pass…on top of a battle pass. And also throw in the fact that it was on Xbox game pass day 1???? Yeah bro I get yall don’t like micro transactions but I feel like as gamers we whine so much about what’s wrong that we don’t give credit to what’s right as well.
This was a really honest review Joe, i'm pleasantly surprised. I personally love it, from the music and visuals to the gameplay and story. And I appreciate that you take time to acknowledge the positive aspects of the game. And even though I don't feel quite as strongly about the negatives, I completely understand why they detract from the game for many people. It isn't perfect, the game is seriously lacking content, and the microtransations are sometimes RIDICULOUS. But if the biggest criticism about the game is that people want MORE of it to play, that hopefully means its in a better place than most games.
Honestly, I'm no fan of Halo. I've only watched this because I thought "huh, maybe they learned their lesson from requisitions from Guardians", but no. It's a good thing they nailed the gameplay.
@@seanestrellado1716 Well they removed random loot boxes at least, you know exactly what you’re buying. The issue is it’s so expensive. It’s not even microtransactions anymore, it’s just… transactions?
Most game devs do admit to watching his reviews, AJ has also been in the news, e3 and the recent xbox doc. the gaming companies want to ignore him but cant because he has a BIG following in the gaming community.
What are you talking about? In a video itself 343 guy said - "we knew that nobody from Halo fans would like the idea of F2P, but we still did it". Obviously they know what they are doing. Studios/publishers like this have a dedicated R&D divisions, which spend a lot of effort to calculate the steps for max profit. Look at how things progressing after Bungie left: 1. they release H4 as "their version of Halo" - nobody likes it 2. they create MCC to kill of Bungie heritage and to have a platform for testing this "curated playlist" crap - does not work initially and nobody likes it 3. after MCC experiment - they get the idea on how to develop platform and decide to chace COD trend in H5 in both gameplay and monetization as a next step - nobody likes it 4. they combine all this knowledge and then create Infinite platform - most people do not yet know that they won't like it 5. they kill of all Bungie games (MP-wise) and remove them from a store, so they would be completely in control of all Halo titles and could continue screw up MCC So yes, they do know what they are doing... Like Joe said - they gonna adjust "that" dial and say - "we are listening!'
Waited years for this game...and the cutscenes where lame, short, and few. That was the main thing I wanted. I wanted linear gameplay with crap tone of story. Instead we got a open dead world with a lackluster paywall online gameplay.
Thank you for not giving this an undeserved 9 or 10 like everyone else is. Its good, its not amazing and people need better standards. This is why I love you guys
Great review! At first i wasn't sure how I felt about the use of old clips from other reviews about the micro-trasactions, but I get it, It's all been said before and still they think they can get away with it. Incredible!
I hope 343 gets their shit together. I really do. There's so many of us Halo fans that wanted a game that reignited that passion we had years ago but this one in its current state just ain't it. :(
I mean, it kinda is though? Sure it's kinda stumbled a little bit, but compared to other Triple A releases this year, and how 4 and 5 were received, Infinite's knocked it out of the park.
@@TheValiantZero people who share your mindset are so irritating. 343 stumbled just as Bungie has previously. Just because something is newer doesn’t mean it’s bad. 343 is proving itself with Infinite. Sure it has a long ways to go but it’s a sure improvement from the last 2 installments. Give it a chance or don’t. Just quit whining like a child and move on.
Definitely agree with the review score. I am used to enjoying the full experience in Halo, especially when Halo Reach launched I would go from co-op campaign to firefight to forge etc. Infinite with all of its issues and missing features it does ruin a bit the experience. Though everything else (gameplay, art design, soundtrack) is amazing.
Love the Angry Joe Show. Gawd, I've been gaming since 1983 when I joined the Army and at various times the gaming genre has grown stale. Joe, OJ and Alex express well the frustration we all feel while also celebrating the greatest and most epic moments in gaming. I look forward to the over the top and yet sincere commentary that makes me laugh my ass off, shake my head in disgust or, occasionally, wipe a tear away. Thanks so much guys!
The reason why this game is not a 10/10 in gameplay is that the sandbox is broken. There are not many useful weapons and grappling hook is the only viable attachment. Also the grappling hook makes the whole environmental gameplay wasted. Remember in halo when you had several different ways to end the scarab... In infinite there would be only one single way: use the stupid grappling hook
I think even a 6/10 is would be generous, game is so unfinished and messy multiplayer wise. This is gonna be a situation where it won't be a solid shooter until a year from now when everything is polished and forge, firefight as well as co-op is added. Also for fucks sake 343 give us back our damn colors, coatings suck.
It's so fucking cathartic to hear someone finally voice my frustrations. I couldn't agree with everything more. Above average campaign with some pretty big flaws. Below average multiplayer with fun moment-to-moment gameplay.
The way skins in multiplayer works. Everytime i see someone with a cool armor I'm never "whoa, he has nice armor! (must play the game a lot)" but instead " lol this guy spent 40$!"
I know a game where they introduced a new mount type for a $100 version of an expansion vs the basic $20. But it did nothing new, just a different animal type (so a skin). That mount is impossible to earn using in-game currency. So everyone riding that mount has a big fat "I'm a chump" on their head. Even better when you see one of those players on discord and they're literally playing other games all the time.
@@CoffeeSA96 I actually do still play it and I’m well over 1500+ hours but I wouldn’t recommend anyone else start playing this game I just enjoy playing in clans with my buddies and I sign up for the MLG tournaments. But trying to play this game by yourself is Awful and the devs still struggle to release any content even with a map maker and custom game browser halo still manages to have no content. In community groups called clans they make maps and raid each other trying to capture a base in a 12v12 which is supper fun but other than that and playing competitively this game is pretty dead and boring for casual players. You gotta dig hard to find things that are fun if you’re a new player
It's really a shame because I can see they didn't get to do everything they wanted. The whole Cortana stuff, the huge epic battles. It's obvious they had no time for all that and instead put their strength in making sure what they do have is really good
@@crono92 They had 7 years and scrapped over 2/3 of the game. At the end of the day the campaign is a shell of what it was supposed to be and I am actually surprised people like talking to your holographic space girlfriend the whole plot while humanity is scattered on the ring and on the brink of being wiped out.
That part when echo saw his wife and daughter on the hologram made me cry because I also lost my wife and kids. Was a good moment for me, and I immediately could relate to echo
I think saying Echo is annoying is kinda silly he's a human being he's going to panic and be a slave to his emotions unlike chief who's emotions have been completely oppressed.
@@samuel10125 I don't want to play through a futuristic military shooter campaign where one of the dudes is a total coward throughout. Haha thank god. I was worried that his halo Infinite review was only 11 minutes long. I was like CMON JOE, there's more to it than that. Glad it wasnt cut short, now I get another half hour to hear his review/rant
Remember when Reach came out and you could just equip any two colors you wanted at any time? Because corporate hadn't yet figured out that some idiots will pay $10 for blue? Those were the days man
Infinite has me excited for the future of Halo again. The story isn't complete and that kind of sucks but this game feels like 343 has finally found their footing and can move forward. 4 was a decent attempt but 5 was just abysmal so I'm actually glad they glossed over and practically ignored everything that game set up. I'm much more interested in the Endless than I was Cortana's idiotic robot revolution. I do hope the next game is a more linear shooter though. The open world felt unnecessary and tacked on and it took away the epic feeling Halo campaigns have.
I loved the open world, thought it worked perfectly for Halo, had some of my best moments just messing about in the open world, I would have liked a couple more linear missions though. Great game massive step up from 4 and 5
I disagree. I really enjoyed the open world and hope they simply just continue to do it and improve on it. Bungie originally wanted Halo to be more open world-like with the very first game anyways.
I don't completely hate the open world and would be more okay with it going forward if in future games they vary up the actual story missions and make them feel grander. I'd like to see more set pieces and epic battles and less deja vu as I walk through the same exact corridor for the umpteenth time. Infinite is great but too much of it made me feel like I was playing the Library mission from CE over and over minus the Flood.
I just replayed Halo 4. In my opinion, it was such a great game. I was having a blast. 5 is so disappointing :( Infinite has me completely on board once again
It's honestly so annoying how 343 can't decide who their villains are. They just keep throwing out the previous ones every time the writers buy a new batch of crack. Poor Joe... imagine having to fix this mess.
I feel Dunkey's review was more accurate & akin to my thoughts that the Ubisoft tower design of a pretty lifeless open world with repetative structures, lack of biome diversity and repetative objectives make it really lackluster and boring pretty quick. I will say that I liked the movement, grappling hook, weapon sounds and gunplay are great but the campaign overall started great and got boring and repetitive really quick.
On another note, I loved the fireteam rescues. It would be cool if the more you cleared, the more random firefights you came across around the map with like a small likelihood of seeing wasps taking on Banshees and scorpions supporting fireteams like late in the game as there are next to no operating pelicans, and no one to really repair them to provide that logistical support to supply these items to the marines on the Halo. I think this would've been an effective utilization of the open world structure.
I personally hated the boss battles. On legendary they just felt like bullet sponge fights. I never had a hard time it just took so fucking long specifically the brute fights since they can't be one shot to the head after taking their Shields down.
36:50 *THANK YOU JOE!* For including this! I ground out over 400 hours of gameplay before Infinite's release _specifically_ for that skin. The weapon skins are still epic but.. god.. that armor coating is *SUCH* a _disappointment._
@@KaranJanii Alright.. Bet.. (Edit: Needed to order a bluescreen, might be another minute) I'm throwing on my Spartan helmet tonight and ranting this out. Link to follow
I find it interesting that one of halo 5s biggest criticism is that people didn’t care for Cortana’s AI rebellion and now that this game retconned that, people are saying it’s disappointing we didn’t get to play through it and all the tension from that plot is gone.
Yeah, people WERE NOT happy at all with that direction back in Halo 5. I personally wouldn't have minded seeing a more focused version of that conclusion in Infinite, but it's weird how I'm now seeing a flux of people saying they wanted to see the full Created story finale all of a sudden.
I dunno seems to me that while they lacked intrigue in that plot thread becuase of bad writing they didn’t intend for the writers to toss out the relavance of it on the story. They also progressively corporatized her attire and personality which means less Cortana more annoying biche so overall people are just let down they dropped the storyline but didn’t even change Cortana back for the better.
That’s the problem with the plot in the first place. They handled Cortona going evil poorly, but instead of trying to handle it well in the next game, they completely scraped it. Honestly, I don’t mind it too much since I don’t have to fight the terrible prometheans any more, but it completely deflated everything from the last two games.
The direction was annoying, yes. But what's even more jarring is they just tossed it out the window with little to no explanation, which is one of the issues 343 games have had since the start. "The Didact is the villain. NOPE, now Cortana is the villain. Nah, how about Atriox! No way, this time it's the Harbinger and the Endless!". Pick a lane and stick with it, damnit. The conflicts in the Bungie games remained clear and focused. These feel like someone is throwing spaghetti at the wall and seeing what sticks.
This is how I know that despite me disagreeing with his praise for some things, hes never shilling. Hes just being honest. Another great vid. Thanks for the content aj and everyone else.
Yeah I reckon there's a lot more to complain about with Infinite than praise. They've literally done a full circle and gone back to the good ol' days of Halo that Bungie presented to 343 on a silver platter... like should we really be patting their backs for doing the bare minimum? So many lies, so many anti-consumer practices (MTX), so many bugs, glitches, desync & lag problems, most weapons are unbalanced for either campaign or multiplayer (or both), and the whole game simply boasts a complete lack of content.
Halo Infinite's gameplay is amazing and I haven't had so much fun playing a shooter in such a long time, but I stopped playing after about 2 weeks because I pretty much had nothing to do. It's still fun in short bursts, but there's practically no incentive to keep playing.
Exactly, same reason I stopped playing. If I’m not getting cool shit by ranking up, idc to play. Hell, even the ranking system sucks as well, not just the rewards
Or the fact we get the same 4 fucking maps. Not to mention they still have yet to add team snipers. That was my playlist along with Swat but they did add tactical later on.
Same. I will play 2-3 matches every now and again but then I get bored and go to something else. It's not that I'm not having fun while playing, it's just... there doesn't seem to be an incentive to keep me playing. For me the lack of maps is a really big issue, particularly the lack of any classic maps
I love this game but the customisation and menus are very disappointing. Reach and MCC's armour customisation nailed it whereas Infinite has locked armour sets.
I’m going to say this with all the love of a halo player since the original. It was decent. The combat was fun, the story was better then 5 and the new and the old were blended well. But it felt like something was missing. I’m not talking coop ( which meant me and my brother couldn’t do our tradition of halo co-op binging) or forge. It just felt kind of empty.
Because it's an okay 1st act. There's not much setup or context for the conflict. Just a single 50-second cutscene, a bunch of expository dialogue and even more audio logs to explain what's going on. You get an idea of what is going on, but not *why*, which is something the Bungie games have always nailed down to a T.
probably the fact that the story felt like a quick 2 min tease, the open world takes up too much of the game for me, I hope the next halo can find more balance as I did enjoy the open world
It's a soft reboot. Think of it as the foundation that future DLC and games will be built on. The important thing is that they're sounding the story in a better direction than 5 left it, and the core mechanics are solid.
A reviewer that speaks facts. No fanboyism just facts. Nice review. I'm a halo fan since day one. But trust me I see nothing innovative in this. And guess what? The issue is from most fanboys who when you criticize the game they damage control it.
I don't give a shit about progression in a game like this, but they seriously need to add a lot more maps
I have no idea why you people are dogpiling the developers when it's Microsoft that gets most of the money for the microtransactions
Devs dgaf about most feedback. Only $$$$$$
they were thinking you'd reach in to your wallet and pay up big budget games are not sustainable on a game pass budget it just makes absolutely no sense
Every single time I hear the Dev's say "that was an oversight" or "we are working to correct this mistake"
I just want to see someone who worked on this game sit down and say outright "We thought you would enjoy paying $20 for the color red on one armor core, 3 times in a row"
You mean you want someone to be honest about it.
tbf I think the honest take would be "yeah the fucking morons who pay us had a hissy fit when we told them this was unreasonable and told us to put this in or they would scrap the project"
EA: "building a single-level version of Anthem to demo at E3 and labelling said demo as being captured "in real-time and in-engine," when in reality no actual game was in existence, was just an oversight :)
Just don't make it a drinking game. Nobody would come outta that alive 😂
Exactly, this developers talks, apologizing and excuses has already become a boring cliché

That’s why halo reach was so great . The customization… not bought but earned. You know when a bad ass t bagged you and it was inspiring
Yep! Back then you actually saw some dude with crazy armor teabag you and now you have a five year old that thinks he deserves the world
Even that customization system had its flaws, anyone with enough time in their hands could unlock anything and everything.
I have been watching your videos for years mates! and I definitely freaked out hearing my voice in this review haha
The multiplayer still feels like it's lacking content such as maps and their environments, while the customization in the game is reaching new peaks of microtransaction cost for basic items & colors. So here's to hoping that they actually create meaningful updates to the multiplayer to allow players to enjoy the core gameplay that halo infinite has to offer.

Devs just can’t help but be greedy
Still would love to see a developer justify why we should pay extra for cosmetic items when we already paid £60/£70 for the game
Not to mention this is a Microsoft game, one of the richest companies on earth, no way do they need this greedy store
Yea, even Free 2 play as well right?
Macro-transactions more like.
I'd have no issue at all with 50 cent player skins, and they let us earn most in-game content again.
I love the devs talk about how the players feedback is slowly helping them come up with a functional progression system for multiplayer..... meanwhile, games like Halo Reach had a perfect system already. Why not do something like that? Oh yeah.... that doesn't make them $$$
It's what Alex says at 34:00 they are just pushing to see what they can get away with. Technically they are right in saying that

I just find it insane that it took them 6 years to release this and in the same amount of time Bungie released Halo 2 and 3 complete.
they cut the story so statin could write it better. I bet the flood were going to be in the game a year ago.

In the Halo universe, nothing is "more dangerous" than the Flood.

Thank you!!!!! That's what I was thinking... and that 1 scene were they say "flood? No something worse" like what is worse than the flood?!?!? Then they give us these space octopuses...give me a break
Thing is the endless are immune to the rings
@@daz_ryan1581 the thing is, so are the flood. The rings kill their food.
@@SladeDoobiedog Everything you said, I agree with.

Always these days
I was in pretty much all of the flight tests on pc, and people were constantly complaining about the challenge system. 343 playing dumb and acting surprised over this issue is nothing short of frustrating.
We all thought the challenge system would be completely different at release. Little did we know
They didn't play dumb - they literally acknowledged it in their blog posts about the flight feedback, but said the same thing they are saying now: Comprehensive changes would take time.

You can like the minute-to-minute gameplay but Halo: Infinite still looks poor in comparison.
That was my bigget problem. Who was the Khan Maykr knock off?
Nah a 7/10 is being generous, this game deserves like a 5/10.
It's sad that this was the best FPS campaign since Doom Eternal...

I wish we'd go back to the halo 3 days where if you got an achievement for doing different things without paying to get it because when the achievement popped up it felt well earned
It was such a rewarding feeling
Not as empty as the Destiny world. At least there are things to find.
That's like saying, "If your car didn't have wheels, it actually wouldn't be very fast."
Obviously traversal in Halo Infinite would be bland if you stripped it's core mechanic away.

@@MattCange that's cause sony doesn't know how to make a good multiplayer game
You know that whole “earned it” stuff is the most accurate thing I’ve heard this entire time playing this game

If you really think about it. Even if it's a really good campaign they still got away with selling you $60 for just the campaign. The multiplayer is already free.
This is actually just a clever way to charge more money without getting backlash from the microtransaction crap.
You're not wrong which I'm really irritated about
And considering how many are defending that decision, we can say it actually worked pretty damn well for them.
Yeah they should have charged $60 for the campaign and gave you all the battle pass included and charged for the battle pass if you just played the multiplayer only.
I mean giving the multiplayer to us for free was a shock!! You kidding me??

What are you talking about? In a video itself 343 guy said - "we knew that nobody from Halo fans would like the idea of F2P, but we still did it". Obviously they know what they are doing. Studios/publishers like this have a dedicated R&D divisions, which spend a lot of effort to calculate the steps for max profit.
Look at how things progressing after Bungie left:
1. they release H4 as "their version of Halo" - nobody likes it
2. they create MCC to kill of Bungie heritage and to have a platform for testing this "curated playlist" crap - does not work initially and nobody likes it
3. after MCC experiment - they get the idea on how to develop platform and decide to chace COD trend in H5 in both gameplay and monetization as a next step - nobody likes it
4. they combine all this knowledge and then create Infinite platform - most people do not yet know that they won't like it
5. they kill of all Bungie games (MP-wise) and remove them from a store, so they would be completely in control of all Halo titles and could continue screw up MCC
So yes, they do know what they are doing... Like Joe said - they gonna adjust "that" dial and say - "we are listening!'

5 is so disappointing :(
Infinite has me completely on board once again
Laziest shit I've ever seen.

@Jevon Howell Turns out Atriox is alive. He opened the vault to the Endless in the final cutscene.

Exactly, same reason I stopped playing. If I’m not getting cool shit by ranking up, idc to play. Hell, even the ranking system sucks as well, not just the rewards
