- We're back working on the 1948 ford school bus that we found abandoned for over 25 years in the forest. Let's try and clean the original gas tank that is very rusty. This has gotta be the dirtiest gas tank ever and WTH do I find inside?

Tank turned out simply amazing! NO WAY, (I thought) was that tank still usable!
I'm still blown away.
That's the creepiest gas tank I've ever seen.
Well done, Now it's a cool rig.
Totally! Hey Thanks!
I know you taped this awhile ago but man, am I envious! That bus is so awesome!
The moment I saw her in that tall weedy woods I knew she was going
To be a gem!!
I didn’t have any doubts about you getting her (yes I called her a girl too) up and moving. In this show on the gas tank though, my favorite part wasn’t when it cleaned up… nope it was the way you tossed the last three vinegar jugs and gave the look towards us 😂
Anyway thank you so much I just
Love your shows!!❤
Hey Thanks! I really appreciate that! I will be back making videos here really soon. I been working on videos on my second channel recently. Hey take care!
Nice to see the bus back. Great job cleaning the tank & saving it. Very cool.
Hey Thanks! ✌🏻
Good job on fixing the bus bro it looks really great keep it up loving watching your videos
Thank You! I really appreciate that!
Put the water hose up to it flipping upside down and let it run free ! And stand back and watch the sediment come out
Good job getting the fuel tank cleaned out and showing how it's done 👍
Hey Thanks!
Nice to see you're continuing to work on that project!
Thank You Lukas!
Muratic acid for concrete in the tank. Flip it to every side day at a time. Will clean all the eust out.
Nice job cleaning the tank. I know it's been 6 months since this video was done but putting a big square inspection plate on the top of the tank probably on both ends would have gotten better access. Drying with the busses own exhaust while cutting the holes would keep it safe to cut. My father-in-law has a 31 Ford Victoria coupe that replaced the 29 5 window body that he had an accident with. I am a welder by trade and I went over every weld on it because it was very sloppily assembled . Now it is safer on the road along with having the front end setup properly and having correct shocks. I love the bus.
Hey Thanks! I probably should have...lol
I'm a big fan of Harbor Freight myself, on their impacts the Bauer is ok if you get them loose with a breaker bar first then you can maybe you can use the Bauer impact. The Hercules line on impacts are much better. These use brushless motors that are much stronger than the brushed tools.
I have a couple of the Bauer tools that don't require a great deal of strength to do their job.
I have the Hercules 1/2 and 3/8 drive midsized impacts as well as the fullsize Ultra Torque and the 1/4 drive impact driver.
I use them all. The first one I got was the 1/2 drive midsized. It works well til you need it to do something a bit tight. Sometimes it can't get lug nuts off. I then got the full size Ultra Torque. This one got out the leaf spring bolts the mid size couldn't. The 3/8 drive I got from their open box area for much less than regular price.
I then got the 1/4 drive impact for doing repairs like on the house deck and such.
I am really surprised how well that tank cleaned up. I really thought that it was beyond hope. It's amazing how well the vinegar ate up all that rust. I've used it to unstick engine's before but you learned this ol' fart something and i ain't kidding. Still might wanna carry a few of those plastic gas filters with y'all. ✌️
Hey Thanks Jimi! Yeah I myself was completely impressed with how good it worked! I will definitely still keep a few filters on hand...lol
@@CountryBoyGasGarage I wonder if enough fuel detergent and multiple inline filters could have allowed you to avoid removing the tank and disposing of all that fuel? Did you have detergent in the fuel when it was gumming the carburetor through the filter? how much detergent? and how many filters?
I have heard that gummy fuel can gum intake valves as well as carburetors, at greater risk, but I still wonder if, say, $50 worth of detergent could have overcome all that.
@@CountryBoyGasGarage Normally it would be worthwhile to drop the tank just to clean out all that rat nest stuff, but I have an alternative for that too, firstly, a pressure washer if you have one, but then, at a self serve car wash with a pressure washer, using the wax option on the underside, including all over the outside of that gas tank.
@@CountryBoyGasGarage Well, fuel detergent and spray wax wouldn't have fixed your sender unit, and all that rust might have clogged your pickup tube too, so it looks like there were no shortcuts on that. Kudos.
Yeah he made the right decision on pulling the tank and cleaning it out the way he did.
I can’t believe you got that tank working. I’m sorry I doubted you! The bus is great!
Hey Thanks! I appreciate that!
On that old engine you might want to add a little lead additive so the exhaust valves can stay lubed.
Hey Thanks! I did add some recently
I watched a show a while back where they cleaned a gas tanks, after cleaning all the rust out and letting the tank dry they put a flash light over the opening and shut of the lights in the shop for a bit and found a bunch of pin wholes in the tank. might be something to check for if your ever clean a tank in the future
Totally! Good idea
I feel you with health problems my friend. Very awesome job on getting that fuel tank working again. Thanks for sharing.
go go gooooo!!! I love this bus
Hey Thanks!
This is the second episode I've watched and this guy is the best mechanic I have seen on You Tube and I've watch a lot of car videos.
Great job on cleaning that tank. They don’t make tanks like that anymore. They were better back then then today
That's Right!
Wash tank out with acetone and it remove all the varnish and any water that may be in there. It will be good as new unless it is rusted through.😊
Hey Thanks!
Awe thanks my friend for the kind words, be my guest and use the "dizzy" on the Nova or the El Caminio..... Let;s Go!!!
Awesome! Hey Thanks Mike! I really appreciate that!
Supercool update and project ❤😊
Cheers 🍺🍻 KC 😎
Cradle Mountain Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺🤝🇺🇸😎👍✌
Heck Yeah Metal Mania 3D TV! Cheers! 🍻💨✌🏻 Thanks! 👍
I just discovered your channel and why it was so satisfying watching you clean the rust out of the bus gas tank,…I don’t know.😅 But, it gave a solution for one of my own projects. Thanks! I subscribed. Love the bus and the Nova and looking forward to lots more.👍🙏
Hey Thanks! I appreciate that!
I was born in 1948 and that bus looks better than I do! Thank you for your stream!
Hey Thanks Paul! I appreciate you watching and for the comment.
Nice video!
Thank You!
Great job, well worth the persistence 👍👍
I like the blue Nova 👍🇺🇸! Cool Bus !
Hey Thanks!
That tank is toast. Looks too far gone. A new tank is worth the investment !!
another idea is to fill the tank with water, take a propane torch and remove the cap off the dummy filler neck for more access
I should have..
Fun to see you working on that again. You've come a long way on that one. Keep up the perseverance.
Hey Thanks Ross!
Back in my day, the way we cleaned any fuel Tank was we would get Pea gravel, and Hot Borax Powder and fill them about a quarter full, and then we made a shaker frame with a heavy mash screen and put the Tank in it and the Frame had a Pittman arm attached to a Flywheel style Pully on a half horse Electric motor and it would vibrate the tank removing all the Rust and revealing any Leaks. Then we would re solder the cracks and leaks . Pour all the gravel out and put a/2 Cup of Hot Sal's Soda with a couple really Hot water and flus the tank and it would look like a Brand New Tank.
Awesome! Hey Thanks!
Sir, thank you for sharing your expertise. I clean my old gas tank by filling with ten gallons of white venigar and packet of baking soda. Fill up all the way helps to clean unreached corners and partisions. I wait a week. Then I power wash it, drying rinse it by diesel. It came out like shing silver shing silver.
Hey Thanks! I was impressed by the vintage.
Cool bus lol
Tank had a ton of rust indeed.
Mortske&Duff fan here as well…lets not forget Mojo ☕️
Heck Yeah! Hey Thanks!
Great job on the gas tank refurbishment, surprised that it survived the cleaning without 100 pin holes, perseverance payed off.
That tank was so nasty inside. It cleaned up well.good job. Cheers Stew.
Hey Thanks! I'm glad I get to use the original tank still! Cheers!
Yeah using the original tank is the way to go if it can be saved. It's worth the effort you put into saving it. Once again well done.
The bus is back! love it. Cheers
Hey Thanks!
I think an important part of what is ringing is the remains of the fuel level gauge float.
Maybe....
Love that old bus. Really cool looking. Happy to see you got it looking so good and running nice
Thank You!
Hi Jason so glad that tank cleaned up! Just keep up the great video's! God Bless y'all!
Thank You Loren! God Bless!
You did a great job on that bus. Congrats!
Thank You!
thats awsome this woul make a killer schoolie camper
Thanks! I been thinking about doing a conversion!
I've been binge-watching this series. Not even sure how I found your 1st video, but this bus is cool. Good work brother.
Hey Thanks Man! I appreciate that!
Great job on the tank. Take care of your back. Love the bus.
Thank You Paul!
The little bus that could!
That's right!
35:47 IS SO CLEAN
I LOVE this bus!!!!
Thanks! Seems just about everyone that sees it, loves it!
She's special for sure!
On a replacement fuel tank, Dodge uses plastic for their fuel tanks. A pick up uses a 35 gallon tank on the 1500. Not sure on the bigger pick ups or the diesel engines. You might find a tank in a salvage yard. With a bit of work you can probably get one up under that old bus. A very cool old bus but the way.
Vinegar works well but isn't as fast as some other products. More a time vs cost thing on that. The vinegar you drain out can be filtered and reused. With the tank up on a set of saw horses you can use the drain plug to drain the vinegar through a coffee or paint filter out even an old sock. Then just pour it back in fo the next go around.
Hey Thanks! I appreciate the information!
In the future. ALWAYs lubricate all nuts and bolts BEFORE trying to loosen them! Saves battery!! Good luck
Amazing rescue. I thought that fuel tank was toast!
Hey Thanks!
Jasion OPTION 1. I would of cut the tank along the weld seams to open it up then cleaned out all the rust then re welded it back together. OPTION 2. I would of put the baking soda with the vinegar together with tin foil in the tank to get a chemical reaction to eat the rust then rinsed it out then i would of blasted hot air into it to dry it out.
You may still run the risk of the filters clogging up from the rust that's still in the tank.
I hope the bus continues to run well good job on the bus so far.😁😁😁😁👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Oh I didn't know about putting those items together for a chemical reaction. I need to look into that. Hey Thanks!
@@CountryBoyGasGarage you are welcome😁😁😁😁😁😁😎😎
Take that tank to the dump and leave it. The agrivation isn’t worth it.
Years ago I bought a B-73 Mack that had a gasoline engine and we had the same problem with the fuel tank. So we filled it with water and cut off the ends of the tank and cleaned it out and put in a gal of sealer in it and after it was dried we welded it back together and it works just fine.
That 20 gallons of fresh gas probably did a decent job of cleaning sloshing around on the church reunion trip
Totally...lol
Look great
Thanks!
Put one bottle of Mystery oil and diesel no more than a gallon and a half then fill with real gas rater than any ethanol gas for the first tank !! try it you will like it !!!
Hey Thanks!
Iam amazed that tank cleaned up as well as it did and yes good old vinegar to the rescue congrats and you mentioned the back the reason I can’t do it anymore but I do enjoy watching it thanks brother
Hey your getting there little by little 😁😁👍👍
Awesome job
Thanks!
Hey Country Boy👋, that was a dirty tank. It look good when you got done. Thanks for sharing and have a good evening ✌🏻😊
Hey Thanks Sam!
Lov the bus video great looking bus
Hey Thanks!
Nice job on the cruddy tank. Great to have the original tank working. Hope you back continues to behave. Look forward to more. Be safe and stay well.
Hey Thanks Brian! I'm keeping my fingers crossed...lol!
Use citrus soak . 160 to 180 degree F . Put 2 pounds of powder 5 gallons water in the tank and fuel lines . Slosh the mix around then rinse with water then blow dry . This works when nothing else will . Looks like a mirror inside . . Used this for 30 yrs . Citrus soak was developed for oil spills but works for many things
Wow, I will look for some of that for the next tank. Thanks!
A place called Brook sales is where I got it . They are around USA .
Another set of hands sure would have been helpful especially to save your back great job man.
You are right! Hey Thanks!
Good video
Thanks!
I have to say, I thought that tank was a goner. Looked like the Titanic inside.
That vinegar trick, cleaned up some rusty tools I have, but I used 50/ 50 vinegar, water. Pure vinegar must work way better.
Good job!!!
dude why are you DREAMING OF REUSING THAT, STANDED TRAP, YOUR SETING YOURSELF UP FOR A BRAKE DOWN SOONER THEN LATTER, SAVE UP FOR A NEW ONE + A PEACE OF MIND GOING DOWN THE ROAD BRO, GOD BLESS ...
Hey Thanks Howard!
Hey Thanks John! God Bless!
Great job! Most would have given up but a poor hot rodder makes due with what he had to do with!
Hey Thanks! That's right!
Hi again for the outside i used a grinder (lightly) to wire brush surface area . Then paint os of tank with 2 light coats of por 15 then spray with gloss is. Os paint.good luck
Thanks!
The bus on tour shirt should be how it looks. Slammed n wide
Yes!
Hi from New Zealand,I watched your first video of the rescue of the bus from the forest and the work put into getting the bus prepared for the trip to Wilsonville for the Stafford Baptist reunion it was great the the church helped out with some of the preparations for you to get the bus to Stafford especially enjoyed seeing the beautiful countryside along the way to Wilsonville .
Hey Thanks! I appreciate that! Helloto New Zealand! I have some great friends that live in Christchurch! Cheers!
Thank you Christchurch is where I live
@nshvle Awesome! If you run into my very good friends Misty and Chris Ruske at the Brewers Collective in the Riverside Market, tell them I said Hello! Chris will possibly be out surfing...lol! Cheers!
I'll definitely look them up next time I'm in there. I love the music in your videos especially at the car shows. We have a large contigent of American car enthusiasts here in NZ. the shows are very popular.I remember during the late 70s early 80s there were alot of 50s,60s Chevy Belairs and impalas around when they introduced unleaded fuel here in the early 80s alot of them disappeared pretty quick alot into sheds to be preserved and a lot to the wreckers as the unleaded fuel soon buggered the engines as people failed to use the additive to compensate for the leaded fuel
I had thought you'd already taken care of this old gas tank..😮
No all I did before was drain and refill it but that definitely didn't work. So I had installed an old fuel cell in the back as a temporary solution
Awesome show man.
Hey Thanks!
For a quick seat for the bus put two old couches length ways. Very comfortable bench seats. Mortskie is a blast love his channel and puddins fab shop.
Two of my favorites!
Your videos are awesome I enjoy them
Thank You! I really appreciate that!
Love the sound effects, creepy looking inside of that tank. New viewer, loving this channel!
Thank You!
Jason I love your videos❤❤❤
Thank You! I really appreciate that!
that was nasty gas tank you did exlent job on the bus fixing it up if i could i would come see it i cant drive disabled
Awesome!!! Love that bus! Glad you like the stickers!
Hey Thanks Man! ✌🏻
From being a shop guy for over 35 years, that little No.#6 Cresent wrench is the under par way. A No.#8 is all you will ever need if you perform the correct application on 4 sided heads.
Now, about the inside of that tank...
Vinegar is pretty good, but there is a product called CLR
It will remove Calcium , lime and rust. It works great on old gas tanks!
I almost used CLR but I was curious about the vinegar. Worked better than I thought. Hey Thanks James!
Yo dude, ever thought about Varnish removal. Watched John Condon vids where he used varnish to remove all of it. Check out his latest video
Great Job Jason !
Hey Thanks Nick!
That tank came out good.
Thanks!
Good job. I didn't think that Tank would clean up. Great that it did.
Thanks!
Great job man
Thank You!
😊😊 super
Thanks!
Thanks!
CLR CLEANER X 10 plus a old chain will break it loose !
I should of tried that
Thank You! I appreciate that!
This is awesome find I think I'm jealous
Haha...Thank You!
That is the best I've ever seen a tank clean up from using vinegar....
I was super impressed!
I did NOT trust the process in this one haha. Wow what a crazy journey this tank was haha
Have you thought about a 2 speed rear end.
That would cut down on engine noise and bring the gas mileage up a bit.
I just found your channel and l really do like what you do.
Keep up the great content.
Hey Thanks! I have a lead on one now.
Hi Jason, Sorry to learn of your back trouble, I was laid up with back spasms for three weeks in February and it was no picnic as I could barely walk. Be careful not to wrench it or twist the wrong way. As for that old gas tank it reminds me of the old gas tank we removed from my Uncle's 26'-0" power cruiser. He like you cleaned the tank and fiber glassed over it to reinforce it as it had to go in under the cabin floor in the boat. Your tank looks solid from the outside so if you can get the interior cleaned up you should have a good tank. Good luck with the project !
Thanks Phillip! If I knew my back would be this bad, I would've taken better care of it...
Very cool bus! nice work!
Thank you!
I think it was cheaper to have a new one made or you could also cut away one side of the tank and weld it back on later, that would have been easier to clean up and time saving.
It's good to be using the original tank. Next time I might try thr cutting it open to clean it method.
This is the same Bus I seen about a year ago. I found an old 1949 Studebaker Bus converted into a Motor Home and then parked over fifty years. I was going to do about the same as you did but they wanted $5,000.00 as is and I just did not see that and then spending $10,000.00 and maybe getting only $5,000.00 out of it. It is always funny how people think, Their old not running Junk is worth so much more than the same thing you have in restored shape. The Classic Antique Car people today are so weird from where and what we builders of Yesteryear was. Today they think they should make 600 % over who what we worked so hard and invested in restoring the Car they bought without turning a tap to restore.
Mt. Shasta Orphan Classics
Awesome! Hey Thanks! Yeah, I miss 90s prices...lol!
I can’t wait for you to start working on the El Camino !! Hopefully you can start getting some more videos out . Love your channel , just wish there was more to watch !
Hey Thanks Michael! I started a couple videos on the El Camino but yeah, I wish I could get one out every week
You are doing a lot of work on all of your vehicles big supper fan of your channel keep up the good work tell the family I said hello thanks
Thank You Alfred! I appreciate that!
Hi, look after your back, I have suffered from back problems all my life and now cannot do much work on my cars. It will catch up with you when your older. 🇦🇺🇦🇺👍👍
Thank You Robert! I'm definitely feeling it more and more. I better take care of it before it's to late...
Hi Jason.
Love this bus.
Will you put a stove and some bunks in it for family vacations ?
Great job on the gas tank, good to see that it worked out ok and you were able to re-use it. I would have filled it with water to force the gunk out of it. Just a piece of rubber from a tube would do to seal off the sensor hole and then poke the pressure washer through the rubber and hold it firmly on there. Just an idea from when i used to use an air pump to force gas out of the tank to drain it with one pipe going in (air) and one out (gas) through the rubber "patch". The air pipe being just inside and the gas pipe right down to the fuel.
Make sure you change that fuel filter up by the carburetor but you did an excellent job of cleaning that tank
Thank You!
Man that is one sweet old bus,
time for a new gas tank IMHO, maybe run 2 filter,s someplace easy to get to, and see how it goes, until you find a replacement tank or not, look,s pretty damn clean in there honestly.
✌️❤️😁
Hey Thanks!
Wow! Can’t believe how much of that rust came out!!
Same here!
