New junk yards haven't been a thing in decades there hasn't been permits for them in a long time so anything that exists right now is literally grandfathered in the only new junkyard I can think of that's been a thing in the past few years is copart and from what I've been getting it literally want to consolidate everything under them and of course the state doesn't mind because then it's easier to keep in line

Keep in mind that was on 50s era rubber. He sold the car when he knew my dad was going to be born. I KNOW it killed him to get rid of it as it was by FAR the fastest car on the road in the state. In Europe those Junkyards are gone due to regulations and stupid laws. Now the same is happening in the States.
While there seems to be a lot of scrapiron, there are also a lot of bodies with amazingly little rust. To the right guy those parts and cars could really be gold.
Among a lot of crusty stuff you suddenly spot a front bumper of a 1960 Cadillac. Try to find one if you need it!
One problem you face in those junkyards: If you look for a specific part, year or model you often do not find the part you're looking for. I speak with more than 40 years of roaming through classic junkyards. Where I live they are gone for years now.
A friend of mine had a great junkyard with nearly 800 vehicles mainly from the Fourties to early Sixties. He stopped selling parts of those cars since the late Seventies. He tried to keep it as a historical site. Not a chance! He had to auction many cars off and crush all the rest. He made more money out of it than he deserved. Sad to say we live in humid climate and many cars that he refused to sell and would have been savable nearly turned to dust.
There was one specific vehicle I tried to buy in 1979. He let it decay for nearly fourty years. My offer of 1979 would have been higher than what he got for it at the end.

It's almost criminal to see all this heading to a crusher. I did hear you talking about some of the old trucks there, and saying CEO, when the acronym should be COE, or Cab Over Engine. The smoke from the fires, combined with that constant horn in the background gives a very fitting, eerie feeling. Knowing that everything there is headed for a crusher, if you can afford it, you might want to think about buying everything left from that 59 El Camino. I sure do wish I could make the nearly cross country trip to get out there before this yard is gone.

Sadly I've been seeing more and more of this in the last 5-10 years. A huge yard north of roswell new Mexico was closing in 2019 when we drove be. 1930's to 1970's. Cars trucks old drag cars . Let us save all we can and most importantly show the younger people why this stuff matters.

I grew up outside Chicago, and in the 80s there were still a couple old school junkyards nearby. One had all the cars that were destroyed in the Blues Brothers plus all the other city and state cop cars when they retired all the old Monacos. Hundreds of them where they actually built a wall with crushed cars around part of the yard. I miss walking around them as a 16 year old.

A lot too learn from These yards💔We're such a disposable society that's why today's cars have no souls😮

I'd love to get one of those early 60s Falcon post sedans and piece her together again .. Simplicity is a 289 and a toploader .. Man the help-yourself junkyard is becoming a thing of the past .. the ones near me won't let you look around by yourself.. I don't know why they are worried about thieves , they are the ones doing the stealing when they want better than new prices for some parts

What amazes me so much is you never see cars older than the 1960's on the road anymore. The only classic cars I do see on the road are 60-70's muscle cars, Ford Mustangs, air cooled VW's and that's about it. People have sentimental attachments to the cars from their youth. So, with the generation who were attached to cars from the 1930's, 40's and 50's dying off, there isn't much demand for those cars/parts anymore. Model A prices plunged when that generation passed on. Classic VW junk yards use to be everywhere. Now, it's rare to find a VW junk yard still open. The desirable parts from the millions of VW's sold are getting harder to find too.
It's sad that so many automotive junk yards have closed. However, it's the norm these days as the past few generations haven't had the car bug that previous generations did.

thanks for sharing ,although this chokes me up , i started visiting the US in the early 90's ,there were so many 70's - 80's cars on the rd and 60's mustangs and even 50's era cars for sale on the side of the roads by the late 90's they were nearly all gone ,i used to check all the wrecker yards on my travels , i travelled the US annually for over 15 years ,my favourite score was a '73 chev suburban 4x4 that i bought back to ozzi , i miss the world of the 90's so much, all these vehicles were runners and $ 1000 - 2000 then , we had so much disposable income then and the world was there for the taking , i feel for you young blokes now , it really sucks now , cheers big ears from down under
