Even attorneys that people pay for will often tell them to take plea deals, then consider it a "win" for getting a "reduced" sentence. Most attorneys are buddies with everyone else involved because they're basically like coworkers.

    • @joshashley7938

Yes, but this also points to a glaring defect in our legal system. Public defenders offices are comically underfunded. There are excellent public defenders out there, but there are nowhere near enough of them. They are often overburdened to the point where it is difficult to adequately represent their clients.
As a society, we have to respect the rights of defendants and fund public defense the same way we find the prosecution. If the right to counsel means anything, then we all have to step up and demand reform.
Having said all that, The attorney who initially handled her case and recommended that she accept a plea bargain for a crime she’s so clearly did not commit should be disciplined. There is no excuse for such terrible legal advice.

Definitely criminal is withholding evidence or not reporting to the correct authority.

US police receive 3-5 months of boot-camp-style training which is virtually unchanged since the mid 60s.
US police is a shame on the nation. They are all very PROUD and patriotic, but they have virtually zero real training. Shame... Such a shame.

It is truly outrageous! Your summation to the Somerset police is incredible! And while you live in Maryland, I hate to disparage your State, but I have also lived there and personally experienced the horrible malfeasance of the police, the courts, and the lawyers. When people are arrested in many places their mugshots are posted online by the police department, then scraped by many unscrupulous websites and posted to the web seemingly forever. Then when a potential employer, date, or anyone searches their name the mugshot will appear and is nearly *impossible* to get removed. Regardless of the outcome of the case it implies guilt and causes problems down the line. This is in addition to the numerous court appearances, attorneys fees, and legal threats that someone has to go through after the arrest to get the charges dropped (of course they are often eventually coerced/intimidated into taking a plea deal before that). The police know they can retaliate against people and cause a lot of negative consequences in their lives whether the charges stick or not.
