I just started double bass and I can reach 120 bpm comfortably, but usually past that I can either twitch into some hyper speed for 2 seconds.. or use leg muscles. Do I need to just slowly up the bpm and my calf/shin/ankle muscles will learn?
This won’t help if you are not heavy enough to defeat the spring because you will have tighter springs to play fast. Yes your quads will burn but they are much more capable of developing that endurance. Double bass is like running. Watch a sprinter. Almost no ankle flexion compared to quad. If you sit far back you can do both, but it’s quite specialised. Death metal only LOL
Finally the answer to the question I never asked for, but totally needed. Subscribed!
Great advice bro dont stop, thanks for lending your experience and knowledge for the craft so others can benefit and learn quicker. New sub🤘
Thank you so much for your kind words and support! I'm glad you found the advice helpful.
i had been messing around with my foot technique when i noticed that ankle swivel youre talking about and you helped me understand it so much better
Happy to help man!
This is a great exploration for exactly how i jave been trying to play and why it feels uncomfortable. Amazing
I do heals down training and fluctuate while playing to keep the heel low and train. It has been working very well.
Thanks man. Ive been doing it wrong for years
That was awesome, 💯 respect!
Glad you liked it!
Where is your spring tension at? Is it pretty tight or loose? Appreciate the tips!
This is SUPER helpful. I’m a bassist turned guitarist and after 26 years of that, I’m ready to up my drumming from simple 4/4.
From bassist to guitarist to drummer - you're on a full musical journey! What's next, mastering the triangle?
@@CameronFleury Haha might as well. I started with Cello…
I’m not saying that I’m any good at any of them. I’m just okay, haha.

Yep, but ankle technique is supposed to be used in higher tempos anyway
Canadian metal drummer 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Eh, sorry if the double bass pedal sounded like a stampede of moose!
@@CameronFleury 🤣🤣🤣 just recognized the accent.
Wow your sitting very high lol my leg is almost 90 degrees
Are shin muscle involved in it or only calves?
It's almost impossible to not use your shins
@@CameronFleury the movement its basically starting from the calves? when i try heel up i fell all the tension on my cuadriceps
@@behemoth9920 that's because you're not working on the right technique

So I guess I need to eat more pizza to defeat the spring, right?
Just get a drum machine, problem solved.
