- Avoid this common mistake in mid-tempo double bass drumming
The reason you're stuck at a specific tempo with your double bass drumming happens for a few reasons.
The main cause of that is because of your drum technique.
If you're stomping on your pedals expecting to be able to play for longer, you'll know that's not going to work.
Do what I'm showing you in the video instead.
holy shit this is exactly the problem i have. not able to ankle it fully but this explained it perfectly
I'm glad you found the video helpful!
I've heard of this, I think it was called a "Heel roll." I first saw it in action when I watched a drum cam of The Rev playing live, his technique was impeccable
I should mention I don't have any drums and don't know any lingo, so a "heel roll" could be something entirely different... actually, maybe it was "heel toe?" They sound similar
Heel-Toe is an entirely different technique, meant to do double strokes. There are so many different techniques, though. I've been working on both heel-toe and ankle lately. They're both very weird to pick up on for an old "stomper" like myself. Haha
I think you meant heel toe.
The Rev I believe was definitely a ankle technique player.
Heel toe is something what Art Cruz from Lamb of God does quite a lot.
I am also a heel toe player.
I prefer using it even in mid tempos of 140 too.. It's less taxing to the foot.
@@eeeeee8762 youre talking about the live in the lbc video aren’t you? I have been trying to find any footage of his feet because his technique is so awesome to me, clear, fast, and powerful. Let me know anything else further you find out!!
This is how i learned to play! It also helps you get consistent doubles or triplets playing with one pedal.
One pedal, endless possibilities! Keep rockin' those doubles and triplets.
I miss my friends double bass and couldn't understand my brother-in-law telling me to use my heels. But I made noise. My bro's drum teachings are "can you count to 4? That's how I learned." Yeah yeah, we know.
This is sick! Appreciate the breakdown!
Thank you, literally just had this conversation and AI must've heard because this video popped up and I was sold a double bass pedal.
Loving your black panther kit, and I’m so jealous of that snare, and also we use the same kick heads, but
Put a piece of tape over part of your snare wires.. or like, an o ring on the batter, please, every kick hit is ringing like crazy
Not to hate, it’s just not pleasant lmao, it’d piss me off real quick if it was on my kit
Also, good explanation and breakdown for this, good for beginners to get up speed and control!.
The bassdrum sounds like an AK-47
Excellent lesson my great friend!!! 👍🎼🥁🎼👍.
Many thanks!!
Thanks for comprehensive tutorials!
No problem at all! Happy to help.
Great info thanks !
Glad it was helpful!
THIS WAS SO HELPFUL OMG
Very solid advice!
Dead On...Exactly Right Sir 😎👊💯💯
Love that snare man, I have the un-hammered one and a hammered 10”. They’ve been in my collection for years. The 14x6.5 is in incredible shape, none of the wires ever broke, everything in top condition. On the hammered 10” one of the lugs crumbled on the inside. I tried to get a replacement from Mapex but they don’t make them anymore. I guess I’ll have to cannibalize one of my other lesser black panthers. Killer vid.
Dude, your snare collection sounds awesome! Shame about the lug, but hey, that's just another opportunity to make your drum kit even more unique!
Best bass drum heads ever Evans EMad, I use them on my bass drums as well. Aquarian Super Kick is good too.
Thanks dude this was great 🤘
I'm glad you found it helpful!
SICK tone.
Doing some judo and running I grimace for that amount of calf work for longer bouts... The lower legs get fried so fast compared to other parts of the body when you really use them. Since most of the days we don't really need them to work, just hang around moving without loading. Shoutouts to drummers, it makes all the sense why they're so fit.
That Mapex Black Panther Black Widow kit is sweet!
The bell under the hihat looks like tinnitus was here
Good info
Awesome 🥁
Thanks
Hey your videos keep popping up in my feed and I really liked the snare tone in one of your other videos but I couldn’t find the one so I’ll just comment here. What snare do you use?
many thanks
How important is seat-height in this? I notice most metal drummers are up in the stratosphere, almost standing up. Does that minimize the leg lifting help force you to rely on ankle movement?
I just learned something new
Happy to help!
Oddly enough, this is how I've always played.
Bro science. Dig it.
Always!
Makes sense!
Blabba dabba dat 🤙🏻
I'm a guitarist and I watched the whole thing lol
Any tips how to setup the 2nd pedal?
same rule applies to one kick pedal which I can make sound like a double bass pedal
Im not a drummer and have never touched a drumkit, but that almost looks like you can almost think of it like jogging on the pedals. Use the biggest muscles available to accomplish the task in order to keep up your stamina.
Also, if im getting sent drum lesson shorts, RUclips has an odd image of who i am.
That's how u get awesome burrito diarrhea blast beats
This was muscle memory for me since I even started playing drums tbh I sometimes even play pedal too fast
You need to practice at various tempos if your feet arent playing along
Kinda confusing as it looks the same visually, but I think I kinda get it and have to try it. 👍
Thank you for being open to trying it out despite the initial confusion!
One of your toms frequency is off and reacting to you bass drum. Great advice either way.
Maybe my tom has a mind of its own and wants to groove with the bass drum!
You said balls
What tension do you have both pedals at? I find with my cheap double pedals, one is always more tight than the other. My right leg pedal is always more loose than my left leg pedal
Is ankling it the same as building muscle? I mean i know it is, but i tire out rly quick
joey jordison doesn't want to teach us. 😂
Lol. You said balls
👨🦲: not quite my tempo
Harmonic sound
Não entendi uma só palavra, mas peguei a visão 🍷🗿🤝
Why does the kick sound like someone slapping a ham?
So basically you’re just playing with your heels? Like the essential motion is coming from you picking up and letting down your heel? That’s how I understood it. Somebody correct me if I’m wrong.
He-he balls
This was also sort of like Derek Roddy's flatfoot technique
Very much so! We had Derek do a masterclass inside of our community and we touched on it as well.
@@CameronFleury wow, I didn't know that .that's really cool! Thanks for replying
Bro that zil bel is asking for some personal space 😢
How were you able to Play it so Fast that First Time? You must have Bionic Terminator Legs.
The Ankle Technique!
I wonder if that would cause issues with the Achilles over time. Ok fine, I'm an old giy with concerns.
maybe but do warmups and physical therapy exercises and itll probs be fine
I need a taller throne, I’m a tall ass dude so I can’t get the angle I want to have good technique
@@the_rustydoornob1164 get the tama 1st chair hydraulic bike seat style throne it's the best drum chair out there. It also raises just high enough to get that nice angle for me and I'm 6 ft 4 inches. Raise the throne as high high as it will go and that will work perfect for you. The tama 1st chair hydraulic motorcycle seat style.
It’s called “free floating” it comes with time.
Do you think a good throne is important? I feel like it’s all about technique but also the technique is to be comfortable. So I think a a good throne and pedal go a lot further than people think.
A good drum throne is very important, especially if your playing for long periods of time. Have had alot of thrones over the years but in my humble opinion Roc N Soc are a cut above the rest. Functionality and comfort nothing comes close.
Dude you have calves of steel there
I dont
Haha, thanks! I guess all those calf raises are finally paying off!
Eloy casagrande is thebest pedaling drum
Whos re-watching in 2024
Everyone is different brother, i dont use ankle or swivel or double stroke but use back of heal plus full leg and get upto 280 bpm, its just how i adapted. Never practiced always just played along to Nile and ORIGIN and now make my own music 🤘🤘🔥
Wow you look like your sitting really high I m at almost 90 degrees maybe I gotta sit higher my legs kill when playing double bass 😢
Nice. The life of the short-legged drummer. Your drum stool is too high, it should only be 10 inches off of the ground because you're leg- deficient. Also, a Fischer-Price drum set would fit you perfect. Totally kidding, keep spreading knowledge and SLAM ON!!!!!
Want to play fast?.. Practice!!!!!
Yes but efficiently, otherwise its useless
Practice the right way. More practice doesn't = more results.
Elvis Presley was the King...of double bass drumming but he didnt know
Chris turner would like to have a talk with you
Cool! Love his drumming
This is double bass pedal playing not double bass as per say Louie Bellson
Try white and grey socks next time
toe balls
Idk why I'm watching this I'm a guitarist💀💀
Please add text, i cant hear clearly
You're sitting awfully high. I try to keep my knee at a 90 degree angle.
I'm really not sitting all that high
@@CameronFleury I had a podiatrist tell me that any sitting position athletics need to conform to good posture, so u don't get problems later. 90 degree at waist, 90 degree at knee, 90 degree at elbow. That's "starting/stopping" positions, as moving all over is what drumming is all about. A dance done while sitting down. Oh, and those split chairs do wonders for not aggravating tail bone issues. I don't have one, but I tried one once and loved it.
It was my podiatrist bc I got ingrown nails so bad when I first started. I was wearing the wrong size shoe. Also a big no no.
I have always played like that faster action
Just get adhd thats what i do.
Dude your drum technique is tiring😂😂😂so much tension on your drumming but i must say playing sweevel is better on your technique
Good advice but tune that bass drum dude
The tension is there for triggering.
No shit... if this hasn't become very apparent to you as a drummer than pick up a new instrument.
Your toes have balls?
Yes
@@CameronFleury dope
Ummmmmmmm, what the sigma is THIS!? How could you praise such an unplayable heap of garbage!
Bass drum sounds like trash
