  • The earth is a big place to keep clean. With Litterati -- an app for users to identify, collect and geotag the world's litter -- TED Resident Jeff Kirschner has created a community that's crowdsource-cleaning the planet. After tracking trash in more than 100 countries, Kirschner hopes to use the data he's collected to work with brands and organizations to stop litter before it reaches the ground.

    That a good example for how the data and knowledge can lead to the understanding that would not have been obvious at first.
    When you see somebody throwing trash onto the ground all the time, then you know that person is going to do bad things in personal relationships too.
    Taiwan and Japan do litter less. It's in their culture to carry a small plastic bag, so that you can use it for trash, if you need to.

    I go on hour long walks with my grabber stick and a few bags mostly at night (night because I do not need the thumbs up or graduate) I have autism and although I appreciate your support I do it for one when I walk the that place again I see mostly clean= happy two exercise =happy three it is a constructive way to stem. I have never seen a litter bug but have seen humans discard there litter without care and it doesn't upset me or make me think there bad just slightly thoughtless. I do not report it to anyone. I see it I pick it up my mother always told us as kids leave it better then you found it. keep your money keep your applause don't expect someone to fix the world for you.find enjoyment in making your world better.this has been your autism awareness moment. PEACE...

      I do the same when I run also I was thinking of doing something with a grabber but only a little more...... Modern. If it wasn't to invasive and not stick out like a sore thumb, I think more people would bring one along for the jog. Might even make a charity event. Kinda like marathon runners through skid row holding grabbers. All they need is the trashcans along the course.

    Many of us have a vision however the hardest part is amassing a following that takes part in your vision. Very few people would take part in something like picking up trash without a reward, I still find it somewhat lucky he was able to amass the following he did in the initial stages of his project.

    I hike daily, i always take a backpack with me and i pick up all the trash on my way. I always come back home with a full backpack, always..every day. Its just nuts how much trash people throw in the woods. I have special trashbags at home, got it from our gouvernement. Cans and small bottles go in a pmd bag for recycling. Glass i throw in a collector here in my street. All the rest goes in the special bags. When they are full i send a message to the townhall, place the bags outside my door and they get picked up. Everytime i pick up a piece of litter im happy. Im like..your days of polluting this place are over, in the bag u go!!! 😁 So come on people, lets do this!! Pick up trash and help our earth become clean again!!!

    I pick up litter when I walk my dog. There really are a lot of cigarette butts. When the street is clean, people are less likely to litter, but if it's already a pig sty, they might figure that no one cares, so it's easier to litter. Mostly I just like to create beauty wherever I can.

    Picking up litter used to be easy. You just bent over picked it up and put it in the bin.
    Now i have to pick up the litter, fumble out my phone, drop the litter, pick it up, drop my phone, drop the litter again, take the picture, upload it, walk off forgetting to put the litter in the bin.

    Interesting idea - but I'm still not sure why it makes people pick up more litter though? Just seems to make it even more of a hassle - get your phone out, start the app, take a photo, tag it, etc. Easily a couple of minutes spent per piece of litter, while just picking the litter up only takes a second or two. Is the incentive here that you get to show what a good person you are on Instagram?

    OMG! Let's makes this about money? About brands? Really... You need an App to be civil? Go to Japan and you rarelly see liter. You know why? EDUCATION. Everyone knows that you have to take care of where you live. Kids even CLEAN THE SCHOOL from a young age. The fact that someone thinks that we are better if we have an App for this(?)... It is just sad.

    The best way to fix litter, every time you see litter and you're with people you know, tell them how stupid, sloppy, idiotic the people littering are. Tell all the smokers you know when they light up before the cigarette butt is littered that you want to see their personal cigarette disposal. Make it socially unacceptable, too many people litter and no-one says anything.

    This might be the perfect place to get some feedback on my position for picking up litter. Picking up another person's trash doesn't stop that person from continuing to litter. I will pick up litter and the trashy human will go on to repeat the offense. The thought of being in this endless cycle of picking up someone else's trash who is going to replace it with more trash, gives me a feeling of fatigue on the matter before I even start. This app is great, but at the same time disappointing in revealing how much trash isn't making it into the trash bin (and I know not all rebellious litter was intentionally discarded by a human). I want to hear about an innovative tactic for curbing the act of littering in the first place - not a method of recruiting the better people to pick up after the hopeless slobs. Responses, please...?

    • @rea6268
      @rea6268 7 лет назад +3

      Point Particle I agree in some points. But we have to start somewhere. Seeing people photograph litter before throwing it away is strange and will raise questions, thus raising awareness. Also, a lot of the time people hesitate to throw something on the ground when it's otherwise clean. An app is not as effective as a penalty, but it will change something.

    I really hate going to this point, but after watching so much Ted and reading a comment in the last video from TED I watched, it really does seem true that most male presenters talk about some issue that's engineering or scientific or whatnot to help the world and so many of the women presenters are about "sexism" and "MAH GENDER" and such.. I mean, I love the ones that are actually about science, but I wish there were more :( pity that...
    Basically, I want to see women presenting MORE videos of how to engineer or build or postulate something to better the world as a whole, not one gender, race, religion, etc.

      The God Emperor It's literally up to them to get up there and do it. TED isn't going to deliberately scavenge for a female engineer who may have nothing important to say just to prove a point. These ideals will just have to take a backseat to reality and quality.

    You are only going after the symptom. Find a way to go after the inconsiderate dbags that littered in the first place. Like give people a reward if they catch people (on camera) red handed while they litter in public. It won't work at a business, they are in love with money so they wouldn't want to risk ticking off a customer that is also littering.

    • @leonsponzoni
      @leonsponzoni 7 лет назад +2

      Well, for some, it is "dbag' attitude to go off your way to record someone doing a finable thing. The school x straws example of building self-awareness, which is better than vigilant hunts.
      Think of how low price fines make people feel less guilty. After all, they can pay the small fee and drive drunk and litter...

    • @remyllebeau77
      @remyllebeau77 7 лет назад

      "Snitching is not the most community positive act"
      The goal is to punish bad people in the community so that you will have little to no litter. I don't care how some communities feel about snitching, we are not talking about someone trying to make a living selling drugs, just people too pathetic to put their trash in the right place.

    "I spend most of my time in the hospital because I have cancer. The nurses let me have as many lollipops as I want. Lollipops made having cancer delicious." That's kind of what the title is.

    1. How do you know that they actually threw the litter to the trash bin?
    2. Is there a reward for picking up enough litter? What's the incentive?
    3. I could literally throw stuff on the ground and take pictures all day long.

      MrSnowgum2 I'd argue it doesn't matter. The data that enables us to make changes in the production of litter alone is a powerful enough tool to cut down on the litter were productions enough where we'd be able to better keep up with litter cleanup.

    Good idea on first view, but why not teach people not to throw trash on the street? Also kind of problematic because of infected needles, bacteria and other things you don't want to touch. This is the type of stuff you pay taxes for.
