The animation in this show is so good that it can almost pass for 2D animation and knowing how this was done by the same company that made Land of the Lustrous, it ain't too hard to see why!
There're some reason i think it is necessary to make the murder in the beginning of the anime: 1/ it is a big arc and a big turning point that diverse the story , 2/ you can see the changes at Tem's death as the place becoming forgotten, till a scene in season 2 his picture is no longer there, 3/ it set up a thing to the viewer about the entire series that in that world discrimination is real and reasonable to be racist toward carnivorous, 4/ if it happened in the beginning of season 2 it would be more forced as the viewer will acknowledge what the season 2 will be all about, 5/ Louis also had a relationship with Tem as a senpai of the drama club, it shows his motivation stronger of trying to become the Beastars and bring peace to the herbivores, 6/ Showing the taboo and real murderous a carnivore could have, the viewer will immediately questions Legosi x Haru relationship
And plus they actually focus on the murder alot
Also it adds a lot of tension.
Knowing that the murderer is among them is a horrifying thought and builds on the idea why predators and prey are divided. Peace ✌🏻
Whenever I happen to see a new anime vid from you I always am extremely impressed by the level of depth you go into and also how consistently high quality your work is. Your videos always feel like they come from a place of deep reflection on what you watched: your videos never feel cut and paste, like some other channels
There are two things about the review that I wanted to point out. I'm not trying to discredit your criticism, but instead I'm just pointing out a couple of unnecessary changes to the story.
Firstly, about the murder. It's more of a big deal in the manga. The anime unfortunately powered through a lot of the first half of the manga and condensed about 48 or so chapters into 13 episodes.
Secondly, about the Shishigumi/lion mobster fight; the entire fight was different in the manga and was changed in the anime. In short, Legosi didn't fight all of the lions himself. All the lions gather outside, he helps Gouhin fight for a moment or two, but is eventually told to run ahead and save Haru, and Gouhin fights all the lions off-screen.
And with this comment I have officially turned into that guy that says "This isn't in the manga" and spouts useless information...Help me.
It's a fair point. However did they still have a wolf charge balls first into a fight? Cuz naturally wolves are stealthy predators and even sneaky combatants who, if you've ever seen footage of wolves fighting, usually get joined by other members of the family. Just saying if he did go alone and only got help almost last minute that may work for drama but if you're gonna portray animals somewhat realistically then why have him go alone?
@@BigBWolf90 Well this isn't a "realistic" portrayal of animals. Carnivores are FAR stronger than herbivores and there for he can handle hand to hand fights. Plus he ain't small dude towers over most.

Its like how they do the other shows and movies. They usually start the CLIMAX at the begin of the show or movie leaving us confuse of what's going on. Are they going to EXPLAIN how did this happened later on in the show?? I usually hate it when they do that. Show us the last episode at the start of the show.

For what it's worth I'm glad someone else appreciated the world building on the mice having to walk along the walls, so cute and silly
The opening scene of Tem's murder is a hook. Season 1 is a massive build up and starts exploring the main characters so viewers become solidly invested in characters. If Tem's death opened season 2, the pacing of the whole story would feel like a abrupt deviation or tanjent from the story we thought was set up at season 1. While you can argue similarly with Tem's death opening season 1, if it had been a season 2 opening, the pacing would be more ragged and rough. With Tem's death a constant question throughout season 1 for the audience, it builds anticipation for the next season even further, than if Tem's death had been only initiated at season 2. This point of where to open Tem's death, is also more closely relevant to the source material. Legoshi taking on 35 lions with Gohin: if you read the manga, Legoshi is a hybrid: 1 quarter Komodo Dragon. That's why he's taller, stronger and scarier looking than the other wolves in the show. Also Gohin did most of the work. Legoshi went more or less straight for the boss.

Yea I have been hearing a lot of good things about Beastars, and from what you are saying, it seems like they are handling a lot of complex and interesting topics well. I didn't think it was that intense of a show.
This is become a personal favorite of mine for sure!
Others have already commented and explained about how it's necessary (and just good story telling) for the murder plot to be introduced and set to the side for the meantime as well as how Legoshi mostly fought his way past members of the Shishigumi to get to their boss (leaving the majority of the fighting to the very experienced and armed Gouhin who is much stronger than the lions).
One thing I'd like to point out (that others haven't mentioned here) is that I wouldn't exactly say "friendships between herbivores and carnivores rarely happen" (3:04). That makes it sound like they go out of their way to not interact at all with each other. For the most part in the show, herbivores and carnivores do try to get along. While herbivores and carnivores might tend to mostly hang out with other herbivores or carnivores, there are many examples of friendships/friendly behavior between the two groups (especially between like-sized animals) shown throughout the show. It seems most herbivores and carnivores do genuinely want to get along, it's just that their relationships with each other are often strained and shaky (especially when things like devouring occur in the news).
I also wouldn't say that friendships between herbivores and carnivores are "strongly discoursed by both sides" (3:07). In fact, I'd say for the most part that they're encouraged to some degree (but with an air maintains some distance from members of the opposite group).
Basically, it's all a lot more nuanced than "it's very rare for herbivores and carnivores to be friends with each other as it's strongly discouraged by both sides".
Another thing I wanted to point out, Legoshi really isn't a "loner who only has one of two friends that he's not especially close to" (3:32). Legoshi is pretty close to Jack (his childhood friend) and he even openly talks about his feelings with him on multiple occasions. Legoshi also has a fair number of friends/animals he hangs out with/knows and is friendly with. This includes his other roommates, some of the members of the stage crew like the anteater (Kibi) and Kai, other members of the drama club (like Els and the late Tem). There are also multiple random carnivores that he clearly knows and talks to (as they're friendly with him and call him by his name) which he runs into in various places (sitting with him and his roommates in the dining hall, the carnivore he greets as they're coming/going from their respective habitat rooms, the one that knows him inside the wolf habitat room, etc.)
Don't really get the complaint about the murder. As you've said, there's gonna be a season 2 and probably more after that. If the show had ended at season 1 and never gotten back to it, i'd see your point. Some plotlines just takes longer, till the time is right. How's that a problem?
I haven't seen the show but I have some hints about that. Like in other shows, they would show the climax at the START of the show but the viewers are confuse of what's going on. So we were wondering, are they going to explain it to us later or go into the details about it?? For example like mirai nikki or asterisk wars.
I'm going to spin back and watch this again. I forgot how good it was.
Fun fact the reason the gang hideout assault goes well in the manga is because the panda pulls out a belt fed machine gun for the fight. They probably thought that would be a bit extreme considering how much was left out so they just hand waved the whole thing as your typical shonen battle stuff.

The class murder will happen in s2. It's the same as the Manga. S1 is so much setup.

The murder will be a major plot point in season 2. The story will become weirder, crazier, less believable and with more plot holes as time goes on and the high school arc is the best part of it.
The author wrote short stories (Beast Complex) before and she excelled at that. She was then told to make a novel-sized Shoen manga and mostly pulled that off, but character psychology is her strong suite, not fighting, or consistency. Her method of writing is to imagine something that's supposed to happen, like Haru and Legosi in a love hotel, then imagine how current circumstances could lead to it, so Legosi fighting through Lion's den was forced.
Legosi is not a pure Wolf, but a hybrid and is far stronger than just a normal Wolf, which makes him standing up to a Lion or Tiger a bit more believable.

There’s an anime called Kaiketsu Zorori which also has most of it’s cast are anthropomorphic animals, which is fun at times, but definitely no where near as good as this.
If you like this show I would LOVE to see your thoughts on aggretsuko! It’s another show about anthropomorphic animals that deals with tough issues in a surprisingly mature way.

I have seen this anime and loved it! Thank god it's getting a second season as I do want to see more (even though I have the first manga volume on my shelf)
Technically Gouhin defeated all the shishigumi. it's explained in universe that bears are super strong. Gouhin himself isn't even at his peak and he took out 34 out of the 35 lions.

Beastars!? the Beastars anime
Loved Beasters it was fantastic and Legosi is my spirit animal. Really hated how it was one of those titles that unfortunately was put into what is known as Netflix jail where in Japan it came out around the fall of last year and us western fans had to wait till around March this year which sucked. In defense of Legosi fighting off majority of the Yakuza lions I chalk that up to he could fight them off because his adrenaline was so damn high with wanting to save Haru that it gave him a major boost in strength.
Well, this was a surprise I didn't see coming. I can see the appeal for this show, but this doesn't seem like my type of thing, so I'll probably pass on it. Great review though~

I love the show but I will agree that the part with Legosi charging the Shishigumi stronghold and kicking all their asses was kinda silly especially if you consider that in nature, 1 full grown lion could probably take down 4 or 5 wolves by itself easily; not that it really has any bearing on the fiction but I just thought it was worth mentioning

Love pentagon? Really? That's some soap opera stuff right there. Some people don't get that you don't need to make things that convoluted and hard to follow. It can occasionally be done well, and I haven't seen the series, so I can't judge for myself.
