The Only Watch You Will Ever Need - The Casio GW-M5610-1ER

- This is my first G-Shock and its unlikely to be my last, it's pretty close to being the perfect beater watch for my work, its been on some pretty rugged adventures over the last 8 weeks and has handled everything that Ive thrown at it.
What I have learned from wearing this watch is that if you're going to do a follow up video then it's probably best to do your product shots when its fresh out the box, I've certainly not babied this watch and under a macro you can see every mark, scratch and smudge that its picked up. I also noticed that the resin seems to be a bit of a fluff magnet and it doesnt matter how much you attack it with a brush it will attract hairs and dust the second your back is turned.
I picked this watch up at a certain High Street store, albeit online as I had a voucher to spend there, so it made sense to make that purchase. If your considering this watch or any other then click the link below, it wont cost you any extra but I will get a small commission which will go towards more watches for review on this channel... Many Thanks.

Lost my old G Shock while scuba diving. So now the fish know what time it is.
For at least 3 seconds then they need to check again... sounds like a good excuse to buy anew one
literally why i'm sat here watching this video lol
That watch will tell the time when the sun reaches this planet as it expands. Maybe then will your Gshock will see it’s finally ticks. But who knows lol.
@Trent Maverick I tried using the app and my account got hacked. Thanks.
@@LastWatch Apparently that's an urban myth. Fish have long memories. Sorry for being so 'red pill'..
I love scanning a room for luxury watch wearers...so I can ask them what time they think it is.
That is a thinking mans joke
@@LastWatch Glad you got it! 😀
That is so funny 😂

You just summed up what I like about them but couldn't put into words.
Trust me, i got this one and for 9 months all the other watches I have are collecting dust. This watch gives me something my wife can't.
The time ?
@@LastWatch lmfao
Wait...After *9 months* the watch gave you something your wife didnt? is the watch pregnant with your child? Hey! youre not supposed to do that to a watch. No matter how nice, sexy and lovely it is! And what will your wife do when she catches you both in the act? Shame on you for taking advantage of that sexy beautiful G shock! I highly dissapprove!
I have citizen, orient and seiko watches but that the only one i use.
Companionship, loyalty, honesty,
I had 2 of these and as a scuba instructor and extreme sports diver loved it. Easily goes to 120M depth of water and spot on as a timer. Still the best as it is not bulky.
First watch lasted 1994-2000 , second watch 2000- today..
20+ years for a digi, thats good going
One of the best watches I’ve ever owned. I bought one for me and one for a friend as a gift.
A few weeks later, my father saw it in my wrist, and really liked it. And in my culture, if someone you hold in high regards compliments you on something, you offer it to them (within reason, of course).
It’s my beloved father, so of course, I took it off my wrist and gave it to him. I never replaced it, but I’m currently wearing a GA-2100-1A1. Love it, but I have to buy this again.
I love this comment, culture and respect in every way
This became the watch of choice of soldiers in the 80s and 90s. No bullshit, no frills, indestructible, Inexpensive, It was considered as cool as a Seiko diver/tool watch.
Gshock continue to be a favourite with the services and for good reason
Many Police and law enforcement officers wear Casio G shocks, tough, accurate, extremely reliable, and very cost effective....there are NO other watches on the market that can beat a G shock.....
Truly the only watch one will need ever. So light to wear, so durable. My fav watch of all time.
High praise
This watch has ruined me for other watches, i can never get any other watch for everyday use. Completely maintnance free and extremely durable.
Its hard to argue against it
Cracking watch and it is stylish.ive been converted back to digital with this beauty
I got the gwm5610 about a month ago and I LOVE it. I love the retro look so much I keep looking at it and wonder if any other luxury brand could beat it. That's what I personally feel.
I do have other wachtes. Citizen promaster eco drive. I have both and both a genious.
Same here. I stopped reading, researching, saving for and buying watches after this. Just why.
This watch is amazing. I had one 11 years ago and it still works. I bought one in 2021 and it's off again for at least a decade...
Solar, radio-controlled, waterproof to 200m, chrono, alarm, world time... the essentials!
What more do you need
I bought this purely as a timer for swimming in the sea but its charms won me over and I wear it all the time now. I have a 2006 Explorer 114270 that hasn’t been on my wrist for months! Also I’ve tried other G shocks but end up flipping them as nothing beats the compact size of this thing. It’s so tough - mine survives unscathed from heavy manual work, sea swimming, mountaineering.. the cool thing about it is everything just cleans off easily - paint, cement, oil, you name it. Just an absolute beast of a watch.
The only watch you will ever need..!
glad you agree
I bought this model 2 days ago. I live in North West of Romania and over night i left it by the window as mentioned in the user's guide, it got synced with the closest atomic watch that is in Germany. All the other functions work as expected. I was at first sceptic about this watch's specs but it proved me wrong. Greatest purcess ever 😎
Thanks for sharing
i thought someone nicked it from your window overnight
I have a G-shock from about 1990, and it is still running, it was a gift from a Japanese company when I did some work there.
Banzai... Lucky on all fronts
Arguably the best value G-Shock in production. What's awesome is that Casio elected to use a forged steel caseback on this model vs stamped steel that used on most! Love it!
Thanks for the info
I'm wearing only the simplest 5600 for 5 months in this pandemia in my beach house.
Best watch for this situation, amazing watch for all to do things.

@@LastWatch appreciate, but we need to maintain social isolation!

I bought this about 12years ago and it still runs very well. Tough Solar battery is still powerful as first time I got. Super durability.
I thought it was supposed to have a 10 year battery, how did yours last 12
@@Gamer-vs3xl Solar power.
@@Gamer-vs3xl Every Casio watches are more robust than the official spec sheet. If they said 10 years battery, maybe it can run 15 years.
I've had mine for 4.5 years so far, still going strong. Does everything you need a watch to do, and the backlight is awesome.
A G-shock is arguably the greatest watch ever made. I am wearing this particular model as I write this, when I bought this watch new I didn't wear it, a decade later I unpacked it I was concerned that the rechargeble battery wouldn't work after all this time, once the watch charged up on its battery indicator meeting H for high it stayed there ever since and that was almost 3 years ago, now that justs amazeing. (lost for words).
As am I, wonderful to hear
Great testimony to the 5610. Encouraging to know mine will be with me for a long time.
Few people know that the G-Shock is actually based on an ancient Japanese self defense weapon used to repel Ninjas. The watch function is just a bonus Kikuo Ibe implemented because he was often late for dinner after all the hand-to-hand combat.
You are definitely on my friends list
:D
"The only watch you will ever need" is true even for the base models. I have a base 5600 without solar tough that is 6 years old and still ticking - not a single batterie replacement. These little demons will still be used as timepieces by giant cockroaches when the world ends.
I can imagine that
🤣
They have a ten year battery life at the least. It's a investment in time ,so is your 5600 without solar tough.
That's the dilemma. I also have a 5600 and can't justify the upgrade...
Yes don't use the light or alarm and trust me the battery will keep going for many more years...
This is one of my first casios and it's a great a piece. One for every collection
This couldn't be more true. I've had this watch for years and it is simple and perfect.
What I love about this watch is it tells me what day of the week it is. The joys of working irregular hours!
Tell me about it
@@LastWatch 'You got plans for the weekend?'
'Umm... what's a weekend?'
Exactly, sometimes my weekend is mid week
It's the watch that makes you wonder how mechanical pieces got back up off the floor. I have some very nice pieces but when I put this on I don't feel I'm missing anything, instead I believe it truly deserves it's place in my collection! A brilliant tough, accurate little workhorse
It's my permanent beater
My first watch I bought at 17 was a Casio calculator, 1980 and currently have 8 Casio including this one , other round G shocks are to big for me cheers , Shane uk 🇬🇧
I was issued this watch in the military some years ago and it lasted every day of rigorous training and tours for six straight years until the battery gave out. I wouldnt doubt had I changed the battery it wouldve lasted my entire enlistment to retirement
Supreme H I bet that watch could tell a few stories
Bought the updated "U" variant last month, wears great, and I couldn't be happier with a watch where I can "set it and forget it". I've always been a sucker for atomic timekeeping as I hate having to manually correct watches, even with the budget Casios that is technically more accurate than a Rolex. Given the renowned durability of G-Shocks, I hope to have many adventures with it!
I'm sure you will
If I had to choose one single gadget - this watch would be it!
I am wearing my one every day since many years and I enjoy deeply every single look at it.
My Fortis (for which I spent all my money I had as a student...) has retired since then.
Durable. Reliable. Pretty. Different.
Love it.
I have the original. The screw back DW5000. Amazing, decades old, backlit with a miniature incandescent bulb. It's been through many new cases and straps but only 4 batteries in all that time, I even used to scuba dive with it, and operate the buttons underwater! Crazy to think that a 1980s digital watch will become a still working heirloom.
An absolute classic
I know a man who is rich. He loves to travel and I have observed him wearing a digital Casio. After he gets to his destination and when he goes out to dinner, he may put on his Patek automatic watch.
He knows which is an adornment and which is functional.
Obviously the Casio keeps better time than the Patek.
I like Casios which have a traditional face with hands for aesthetic reasons.

For those who don’t already know, there is now an updated module (from the 3195 here to the 3495). It’s official designation is the gmw 5610u. Updates include: Much better GMT features when travelling; reversible day/month which European and other non U.S. regions will appreciate; current time always visible from each mode; LED backlight which uses less battery; stopwatch improvements. In other words, it now has exactly the same functions as the $500+ metal G-Shocks minus the Bluetooth connectivity (which requires faffing around with a ‘smart’ app on your phone/tablet anyway). Wisely, Casio left the look identical. Well, almost. The observant among you will notice it now just says “LIGHT” on the top right border of the screen instead of “EL. BACK LIGHT”
UPDATE: It also has a slight bezel change making the “A” button (top left) in particular easier to access.
Thank you for this, I have been replying to comments for some time explaining to viewers that this module has been upgraded since my review
The LED looks awful compared to the EL. You just can't beat that retro green glow
@@dsfgasdgqweq3456t534 Well, I don’t know about “awful”. It’s a matter of taste and practicality. The LED is undoubtedly brighter (less easy to see this on video compared to real life as it were). On the updated version it can be set to 3 seconds. But yes, the EL screen is more even from all viewing angles. Eventually though, it does deteriorate and even at full strength looks a little looking through a swimming pool at the digital numerals.
Side note: The LED isn’t exactly the same on all models - at least subjectively. For example, I also own a black, full metal square with the STN negative display. The LED on that is close to perfectly even and, because of the negative display, it makes the numerals a sky blue over a midnight blue background. Quite a classy look.
@@dsfgasdgqweq3456t534 LED consumes less energy and it lasts much longer without any issues than electro-luminescence. LED was used in the first generations of G-Shocks. Casio is replacing all EL with LED for a reason. There are many YT videos why LED is better than EL.
Perfectly crafted piece of history on your wrist, and amazingly, still outperforms most watches even today. There's no reason not to get this little legend
The 6900 is a legend of a watch and has appeared in many movies too!
I'm buying this on positive display version also!{I have it on black}. I simply love the simple functions and the green light! 💪 🍻 🎊 🇷🇴
The best watch I ever had... Got mine in 1987... and took it scuba diving!
that's pretty impressive
I have owned this for over 2 years now, and use it everyday! Solid, good looking and really got all that i need :)
I bought this watch a while ago. I love the retro styling. Always precisely accurate as it syncs every night with the atomic clock using the radio transmission from Anthorn in Cumbria. Radio syncing continued to work perfectly on a trip to Belgium. Mineral glass crystal is a nice touch, too. Display very easy to read, and backlight illumination effective with a subdued greenish glow. Plus, solar charging means no worries about changing the battery.
Great selling points
Pretty much sums up exactly why this watch is so so good.
The multi-band feature and solar charging are the main points for me - absolute accuracy for both date and time, and a battery that lasts and lasts, no matter how much you use the backlight.
I also have an older solar Waveceptor with just the UK and German frequencies but that covers almost all of Europe. The UK signal stretches out way west into the North sea / Atlantic, where few of us will spend much time but the German signal overlaps well into the UK and covers more of Europe ( Southern Spain across to parts of Turkey and Greece etc.).
GPS might be even better because the watch will automatically switch time zones, but watches like that cost much more and ultimately are only more accurate when there's no radio signal.
Having said that, at an accuracy of +/- 15 secs per month, watches like the 5610 are rarely more than a second or two out anyway before they manage to sync again.
Kim Newton funny you should mention GPS, keep an eye out for my next unboxing
A genuine modern classic! I love mine!
Had mine for over 10 years now and it has not failed. It actually keeps the time more accurately than all the other radio controlled watches and clocks I have. I'll never get rid of it.
Question, when it hasn’t been powered by solar, does it readjust the correct time in its own when it gets power?
@@thiaguinhooitodois2211 yes
I have several Casios but this one is my absolute favorite.
Keep an eye out for another G-Shock video from me this evening

This has been my most go to watch for the past year. Tough, comfortable on my 6-5/8” wrist, and very functional. This watch covers everything.
It's my daily work wear
I've been wearing G-Shock watches for many years. These watches are terrific performers for the money spent. Most of the ones I have are solar powered. These watches look very good, and at the same time they are an excellent time keeper tool.
More accurate than any automatic
Yes, I also own some expensive watches but the G the go to watch. The best watch you can own.
It's a formidable watch
I never thought I will ever get excited about a watch, but this video did that. Thank you amazing video.
Wow, thanks!
Just got mine today and I absolutely love it. Got it to use for fieldwork and on my motorcycle rides. My other watch was my grandfathers 1982 Rolex Datejust (now mine) and I was a bit worried about vibrations from my bike messing with the movement not to mention getting beat up when I do fieldwork.
This looks great and it’s nice and light and not too large, or too small. It’s just perfect!
Thanks for another comprehensive & excellent review. A few weeks ago I bought the GW-M5610-1ER after deliberating over the many G-Shocks, I'm pleased I got the right one. I agree with all your comments & it really is a cracking watch. Everyone in the immediate family is wearing a Casio although we all have at least one expensive watch! My Wife is wearing a F-91W, my Son, who has a large high end watch collection, is wearing a DW-290 in preference to all his other watches. I also have, and am currently wearing, a W-800H-1AVES, another excellent Casio watch. Thanks again for the review.
I have another iconic casio to review
"This is my first G-Shock.
I REALLY don't think it will be my last."
You are correct. I started with a GA-100, which I am wearing as I type.
You cannot just buy one G-shock.
Lets see how long I can hold out before I buy another
Since I got this watch all my others are just pretty dustcollectors, simply love it 🥰
This watch is so awesome it evens shakes and shimmies when out in the sun!
It really does
I can vouch for their toughness. My GWM-5600 hasn't let me down in the 13 years I've owned it. After 10 years on my wrist working on a building site, I retired it to my collection. Of course with a new bezel and strap. Never used a battery in all that time. Great video man. Thumbs up!!
Tough watch for a tough job
Same here. Mine is over 13 years old and counting. I don't wear it in winter, I wear a slimmer watch that goes under sleeve layers easily (I work outside). Comes back out in spring, battery indicator always on high. One replacement strap. A few scratches on the display which adds to it's appeal. Copes easily with dust, sweat, water, dropping from height, you name it. Unbeatable watch.
@@corac4 👍 Unbeatable 👍

Thats a hell of a reference
As a kid, my family went on a trip to Hong Kong, and the watch shop windows were filled with colourful G Shocks. This image stuck with me. Even though I own some high end watches, G Shocks squares are what I wear these days.

I've owned one of these for almost 3 years after finding this video. It's still on my wrist.
Not sure if it's been said but this watch recently got an updated module. You can now set the date to MM.DD or DD.MM for all other countries that differ from the USA format. Also the new one uses an LED for backlighting that uses less energy, is more reliable, has a cool white blue color and can be set to last from 1 to 3 seconds. So you can flick the wrist less... or more if you like the new color better. 🙂
So I understand, thanks for sharing for the unenlightened
I bought this watch on Amazon, I've been wearing it daily for over 6 years, it's worked flawlessly. I won't wear any other, it's perfect. I do have the non- solar base model, bought at Walmart 7+ years ago, same battery on that one going strong. This is the best watch, there are better looking watches out there, but this is in a class of its own.
Its hard not to wear it
A couple of years ago, I was looking at getting a Japan only GW-5000 1JF, with atomic time, tough solar, steel case and screwdown caseback. I ended up with a GW-B5600 bluetooth square on combi bracelet and the full metal IP blue GMWB-5000. They are superb watches, and I enjoy them even more as I continue to wear them.
Great choices, one day I’ll get the GW-5000 1JF…..to go with my DW-5200 from 1984 and my recently purchased GW-M5610 (bought, used from a Grenadier Guard)

I'm still 100% satisfied with my GW-M850 that I bought nearly 8 years ago. Love it's solar capabilities. It's my E.D. watch. Not one issue with it at all. I wish I had purchased two of them that day. Im going to purchase this 5310 in it's steel version. I'm not a watch snob. I'm a G-Shock snob. Once you own one you'll understand. Great video 👍
The steels are gorgeous
Just bought one recently. The solar and multiband is worth the extra money. No batteries to worry about and it usually syncs with the US tower every night on the first attempt. Try the 16mm adapter and a Nato strap. Much more comfortable. I own other G Shocks and love them but, this one has become my EDC. Good luck with yours!

The only reason I “upgraded” to the 5610 from the 5600 was for the multi band 6. Once you get a watch that has it, it ruins every watch that doesn’t have it! At least for me.

Excellent review, I've been wearing the older gw-m5600 for the past 10years & its never missed a beat.
MrSidiboots just think about that 10 years, if you divide the cost of that watch by the number of years you’ve owned it, this makes the watch insanely affordable
@@LastWatch Thats exactly how i look at it, i did have to buy a new strap around 2 years ago at a cost of £7.50, genuine casio. The only problem with G Shocks is that it's hard to just have one. MrSidiboots many thanks for your kind words, my channel is still relatively new and I’m still learning the trade.
Now a negative display is something I could go for
Insanely cheap running costs to change a strap around years is good going, providing the head of the watch is still good you could spend a little on a new strap & face case and then your good to go, I've often wondered how long the internal circuitry would last before you need a new watch. (does any one know).
