I wish I had seen this simple and informative video before now. It seems like a great, basic starting point set up, for the reportage side of the wedding shoot. Thanks for posting.
I like the idea of reprogramming the DOF button. After a few years you know your DOFs so rarely use it. I would add registering the Highlight Alert to the favorites menu, so you can enable/disable it quickly.
i just watched a review by jared polen saying the markiii didn't have that function and that now markIV has a button dedicated just to do that change. Seems pretty easy in the mark iii to set up.
Thank you so much! I just received my 5Dm3 and my eyes glazed over from so many options. I needed a place to start. Your tutorial was perfect because it not only told me where to begin, what to try and gave me a better handle on what settings were available... And you did it in under 6 minutes. Bravo!
Every photographer has their likes and dislikes, and their favourite settings, the ones they are most comfortable and most conversant with. You shouldn't be beaten up for shooting your ISO in Auto mode, or shooting in AV mode for that matter. That is what does it for you. I feel comfortable in M (Manual) mode, so that i control everything. BUT i have been caught out many a times by not adjusting settings, and ended up with poor quality images. You live to learn, you learn to live. An advantage of AV or TV for that matter is that, you choose your depth of field (or shutter speed) and let the camera work out the shutter speed (or aperture value correspondingly) and you can just focus on shooting images. :-)
I think in a lot of cases that shooting in manual mode is purely based on an expression of arrogance. When you have time to compose a shot, compose all the settings, to force your camera to produce a result different to what your camera wants to do, then great...go manual. But when your results are going to be no different between manual and any other setting (from semi auto such as TV or AV to full auto) then why complicate it? And especially why complicate it at the risk of not being quick enough to adjust settings correctly to create a photo and miss the photo all together. Get over the arrogance, and understand that modes other than manual have their place. Ever tried to shoot 300 vastly different photos within a sporting event in manual mode? You would end up a chaotic mess, and there is n way you would get all your settings spot on for each photo. Instead, use TV, adjust this ONLY as needed, set ISO to auto and so on. That way, you are going to take care of what should be the highest priority in a sporting photo - shutter speed -(funny that...perhaps that's why it's called shutter priority?) and have your photos turn out crisp in freezing the motion. Yes, you may miss some opportunities of manipulating the creation of a photo by being in this mode - instead of say needing out of focus/in focus the way you want, but you are going to capture more overall opportunities by being in this mode! And if you DO want control of depth of field, then set up an AV setting too, and if needed, switch between your preset AV and TV settings as needed! No arrogance. Easy. And above all WORKS!
I would also think about using Highlight Tone Priority in Camera3 panel. This helps stop the bride's dress being blown out in the sunshine - cos there's nothing worse than a head perched on top of a white cone!
thank you so much, i just got myself a new 5D mark iii about a week or so, your video gave me a place to start :-) could you guide me with autofocus settings please especially on the case settings. thank you
paul drown thanks for the kind comment, please pop along to our website www.thephotographyteam.com and subscribe there for further video and written updates

I don’t shoot weddings, but I’m a big believer in we can all learn off each other no matter what genre. ISO is frequently used for wildlife photography, where tracking your subject can take the settings through several different meter readings. I can imagine, especially in older churches with the larger windows, the bride can walk through several meter readings just walking down the aisle. Are these permanent settings or stored in one of the custom settings? The reason I’m asking is for when you use artificial light and the impact of auto ISO there.
I have been wishing for a "magic button" that sets a minimum shutter speed for years! I shoot natural light with lots of little kids - I have a lot to think about without micromanaging my shutter speed in full manual. Thank you!!!!!
hello just bougth my new first camera ever canon 5d mark iii. still trying to figure out how it works. but i got one qustion what type of memory card that i should buy for this 5d mark iii
+zion darl The camera will take 2 different types, CF and SD card. What type of card you need can all depend on what you are shooting. Burst shooting of sports needs a high speed read write to be able to keep up with the image processing. If you are more of a portrait photographer and have a smaller budget, a less speed read write are cheaper. But remember when it comes to downloading the images, the higher the speed card the better.
thank for your reply. just bougth the camera last two days. i want to use it for video shooting. can you recomend any one for me that will suit video shooting
f14media I mean, in the menu, turn on Highlight Priority option, and it will care about more the white dress! More detail you save with it! The ISO settings will start from iso200 with it, you gonna see a "+" mark! In the menu: 1st section, 3rd page, under Picture Style! :-)
I can't seem to get ISO speed settings to work. I set up as you instruct but although I set to minimum 100 high 6400 . ISO still going up to 12800Help appreciated please Many thanks Pauline
+scz67 Yes that is true, when using our flashes we normally use either full manual mode or AV mode but we set the ISO manually. The flash is always on ETTL unless we want more control and then we switch it over to manual.
great instruction, thanx a lot, just got my new 5D, your video gave me a place to start :-) however, was thrown away when using on camera flash (600ex-rt) would love to see your approach on on camera flash. i usually volunteer to shoot for experience at our local church mass weddings ceremonies, where couples who are on a tight budget would come & have a mass wedding (about 15-20 couples all at once) & would all have a common hight tea there after (sponsored by the church) at the church premises, these have multiple rooms & the lighting conditions changes from one room to another, anyway would appreciate it if you could shine some light on this matter. thank you
Hello.. can you assit me with the aspect ration settings on canon 5dkm3? I would like to set my camera as 16:9 and 2.35:1.. would really be nice if you could advice me on how it works.. thx..
+Yesenia Gonzale Hi, that was just really for in the ceremony. We have now moved onto Fuji cameras and set the ISO manually. If the light will remain constant in the ceremony it may be easier to set the ISO manually but if the light is changing constantly then auto ISO is very useful
The Photography Team : I am using a canon 70d so the best setting will be manuallt for the ceremony if the light is constant and when I go outside to shoot the couple it will be better to set it auto since the light changes correct?..also one more question when you are focusing with AI servo where do you place your focal point when the couple are walking down the aisle?
+Yesenia Gonzale yes that's correct, I normally use AV mode outside. If you are able to it's best to place a focus point on a face. However I also use zone tracking and let the camera automatically focus on the moving subject
I have both 5d mark 3 and 80d. If I got rid of the 5d mark 3 would I be missing something? I normally shoot video but on occasion I'm asked to shoot wedding pics.
First of all, congratulations on making very useful video for not only wedding photographers but for all. I am so deeply impressed that i have instantly liked and subscribed to your channel. Few questions if you can find time to answer. 1- Does these settings can put an extra load on battery, like ''Orientation linked AF point" if yes then how much? 2- How to get soft light with speedlite mounted on camera body in an outdoor scenario without bumping ISO? 3- Are all these settings dependent on AV mode or i can shoot with these settings on Manual Mode as well?
Hello I am a new photographer and have some learning disabilities, I do pretty good but really need to constantly advance my learning. I will be shooting in an auditorium of a bodybuilding contest. What video would be good to watch to set my canon 5dMark III for this shoot. I am using a diffuser dome and would like to shoot manual or AV from this Video.
Just curious why is your Picture Style set to Neutral vs. Standard? Is Neutral the best setting for indoors or best for most locations? Thank you kindly.
One question.... If shooting dual cards, one for backup, can you assign one card for recording the raw files and the second card for recording backup duplicate jpgs? If so, how?
Yes in the "Record func+card/folder" (Yellow section) menu select the record function "Record Separately". You can then chose what records to each card.
hi im using 5d mark iii also, i noticed that it writes to my sd card slow? this is when i rapidly shot during entourage. im already using lexar 1000x, tried different cards already and still the same. settings are raw + jpeg medium. thanks in advance
Nice video thanks, quick question. When shooting with dual cards if you create lots of folders doest it create a folder on both cards? I shoot events and have 50 or 60 different categories, shoot 10,000 pics and would like to shoot large jpg for prints and small jpg for fast transfer to a computer and super fast upload to a gallery. Thanks
Hi unfortunately we don't shoot canon anymore so I am unable to check. I never used to create lots of folders so don't have any experience of this, sorry buddy
Hey, Is there an update for the 5dm3 or something, or an unlock for advanced options, because mine are limited in reference point to yours. Just wondering why your menu/settings has more options then mine, I couldnt get passed ISO Speed settings, I didn't have this option it the tabs, mine are more limited then yours?
Its hard for me to understand why you do not place the camera body in M mode when shooting inside the church. Shooting in M with the flash in E-TTL provides a much higher chance of getting well-exposed photos. Av should be reserved primarily for outdoors during the day light. Av causes the flash to be in Fill Mode, but it should usually be in Key mode.
Thanks a lot !! but i have one doubt if i keep image format in 5dmark 3 as i remove & copy my image files in computer it is showing as CR2 File ?? i want it as JPEG OR JPG. How could i encounter ?
I shoot in Raw+Jpeg and what I do is after the wedding the customer picks the 80 images I fix for their book and I give them all the JPEGS on a USB ..... that way they can send whatever images they want in Jpegs to family and friends....and they can use the Jpegs to post online .....
thats what the AI Servo option is for to have a continuous focus without having to continuously press the AF Button, if its still out of focus then maybe your glass is dirty? lol
Hi when you set the ISO and the shutter speed for shooting weddings does that also work with a Flash? cause sometimes when using my Flash with Av mode, shutter speed will go slow and shoots comes out blurry
O.K.....i herd enough now for the question at hand. How much is it u nder 7 or $600 dallars. because i'm on the market for new camera. So please write back to me man.
hi thank you for this video , i have question pls i do exact like the video and i put minimum shutter speed 1/125 but when there is low light the shutter its go down too much!! can you helep me to fix this problem Thanks
I sometimes use auto ISO too. The 5d3 has great high ISO performance, and the Canon dual control wheels make exposure compensating in the priority modes easy. The result is the ISO would be what I would choose if using manual ISO anyway, but one less thing to deal with in the fast paced wedding environment. If you shoot weddings you'll know the light inside some venues can change dramatially from the spotlit alter to near darkness just a few steps away. You also saw in this video where you can restrict the max ISO so you don't need to worry about the ISO going super high. 3200 is my personal max on this camera, but to each their own.
Extremely helpful!! Finally a video on this subject that has clear and easy, understandable instructions. THANK YOU!!
I wish I had seen this simple and informative video before now. It seems like a great, basic starting point set up, for the reportage side of the wedding shoot. Thanks for posting.
+scz67 Thank you
Great setup tips. Used this camera for years, and I am still learning new tricks. Thanks!

I have a Canon 5D Mark iii. I followed your settings in this video for my camera. I mainly shoot flower and foliage photos.
I love the depth of preview button / custom fiction to switch to servo mode Thanks for your video.
+Tom Hennrey it's a handy feature
i just watched a review by jared polen saying the markiii didn't have that function and that now markIV has a button dedicated just to do that change. Seems pretty easy in the mark iii to set up.

Thank you so much for the informative video. I just got the camera and didn't know where to start.
paul drown thanks for the kind comment, please pop along to our website www.thephotographyteam.com and subscribe there for further video and written updates
Bookmarked your excellent video! I'm nearing 70 and my eyes aren't what they used to be: 20/15. Need all the help I can get, now.
Thank you for sharing so you use the same setting for the mk4
Back button focus will achieve the same result as your dof/oneshot button setup and is much easier to use.
thought the same thing
If you're already using back button focus to focus the camera, you need the DOF button to change from one-shot to A1Servo, no?
there you go mate
thanks... ive just got this camera to photograph weddings and ive learned something
thanks.
Andrew Whetton thanks for the kind comment, we are glad you have learnt something, please pop along to our website www.thephotographyteam.com and subscribe there for further video and written updates

+ozbod54 Yeah that is a great feature!
Great info. Did you use any lights with these settings?
Just bought one and needed to update my settings. This helped big time. Thanks
Cheers
You, my friend... just saved my life ;-) Thanks!!!
learned a few things i didn't even know the camera did. thanks
+Scott Duncan Thank you, glad you found it useful. Im sure theres plenty more that this camera can do :-)
Thanks for sharing these suggestions ! I find them useful.

genswarc great point, we do use Highlight Priority, it is a great tool as a quick reference to see what is blown out or not.

It will still go higher if you are using Auto mode?
Best setting video ever. Clear and super clever ! thank you
thank you so much. I learned so much from this video. awesome job man !!!
I would love see your set up for hassle free on camera flash. (600ex rt) As I understand in ettl and AV, the auto ISO is capped at 400?
+scz67 Yes that is true, when using our flashes we normally use either full manual mode or AV mode but we set the ISO manually. The flash is always on ETTL unless we want more control and then we switch it over to manual.

@@nathan_woodgate ok sir will try it thank you
how do you set the meter so it doesn't keep turning off? on nikons you can set the shut off time to infinity but I can't find it on the Canon 5d mkiii

You have your camera set to RAW. You need to change your image quality settings on the camera to JPEG
+The Photography Team :) lol ha ha ha..Well said!!! Also there are tutorials online that will show newbies how to use a DSLR :)
AWESOME - learned a lot. Thanks

how to do sharp focus in wedding and sport Photography
Sidhartha Mishra If the subject is moving then use a fast shutter speed, if that means cranking up the ISO then so be it 👍🏼
thanks sir..I know about sutter.. but many times focus is not sharper... if subject come forward so many time subject out of focus
thats what the AI Servo option is for to have a continuous focus without having to continuously press the AF Button, if its still out of focus then maybe your glass is dirty? lol
just try to understand why is it a bad idea to set it standard on al servo mode?
The rear screen on my 5D III has a magenta colour cast. Is that normal?
It shouldn’t have a colour cast. Unfortunately I haven’t used Canon now for some time so can’t compare it.
Beautiful
which focus point are you going to use?
I use all the cross top points and use which ever one suits each scene
very nice
Useful vid.
Thank you Ian
Nice explain
Hi when you set the ISO and the shutter speed for shooting weddings does that also work with a Flash? cause sometimes when using my Flash with Av mode, shutter speed will go slow and shoots comes out blurry

I think if there is not enough light then the camera has to reduce the shutter speed. I suspect this is only when your ISO is maxed out
