Canon user here as well. Beautiful colors every time. I finally bought this dream camera for myself and my clients....totally worth the wait. Coupled with my Canon 70-200mm 2.8L USM....I am overly excited to spend many years with this camera. As a concert photographer, I imagine the mirrorless would make my life so much easier, but, I do love a great challenge. I have zero complaints about this camera, and neither do my clients with their photos. I have no plans to upgrade my setup, until this camera dies. I LOVE IT!
Bought a beat up one on ebay for 235€ as an upgrade from my 600D I got 5 years ago when my dad upgraded. Especially the Magic Lantern Capabilities on top of this Legendary stills Camera make it the absolute best value I could get for my small Budget.
The 5DIII is a rock-solid camera. It is my camera of choice when I am asked to do an 'event capture.' I will probably take more than 500 photos at one of those events. I might be inside and/or outside. I might be close to people or far away trying to get candid shots. I like it because the AF will be 'spot on' and as it is FF, my photos will have that distinctive look. It never fails me in those situations.
I've been shooting professionally with my Canon 5D III for over 7 years and feel like I'm always needing to refresh or learn more about it. I'm also a fellow film shooter, so sometimes complex systems like this get overwhelming! So thank you so much for this walk through!
Thank you! Pleased to be of some help! I’m actually out right now filming my first YT video in ages and your lovely comment just gave me a bit of encouragement to keep pressing on so thanks for that! All the best. RR
I’ve just ordered a “like new” 5D mark iii so watching your video in anticipation. I mainly do bird photography so mapping the one shot/ai servo to the DOF preview button looks like a must have! Thanks!
I'm an old gear lover. Received one Canon 5D Mark III from my son two days ago as gift. I'm already using 5D Classic and 5DII with deep satisfaction. Therefore, 5DIII is bound to be a great DSLR. He used it extensively for his professional work and clicked around 214,000 shots. But I'm confident, this will keep clicking much longer. Being a hobbyist, I would like to use it for all my purposes that includes landscape, street and wildlife photography. For action shots, I already own 1DIV and 7D. I'm confident, 5DIII will also work great in this genre. Thank you for the video.
Thanks for this. Nice set up you have. Would be interesting to hear which camera of the 4 you prefer.. which o r would you pick if you could only keep one?
Cool guy, not boring. It's especially cool to watch such light and pleasant reviews from real professionals who actually used this camera for years and created masterpieces after all sorts of dull bloggers discussing megapixels and "shortcomings" of Canon, in whose portfolio there are one and a half photos of a cat against the background of a carpet.
Just borrowed this body from a friend coming from Olympus and this video was very helpful. I am also a huge fan of the peak design anchor system and straps. The versatility is unmatched as well as their warranty and customer service.
I could speak to so many things in this video, but I'll keep it short: I LOVE Peak Design's system! I have the red discs attached to every camera I own, so I can use the same strap on whatever camera I am using for the day. You can even buy just the anchors and put them on any other strap you like. I shot a wedding with the 5D Mark III and a 24-105 lens with a Peak Design strap, and I never felt like the anchors weren't substantial enough. I've also carried the same camera/lens while hiking through the woods MANY times, and never had a worry about the strap and anchors. Their products are VERY high quality. I came from the film days, so I like to keep it simple, but I do use a few of the auto functions. I figure that the camera manufacturers spend a LOT of time and money on R&D, and I have found that the metering systems are amazing. I generally set my cameras to aperture priority, because aperture is the setting I am most concerned about. Sometimes I will set the ISO, but I mostly leave it on auto. And even though this camera has a million auto focus points, I usually only use the single center point. Again, thanks for the videos!
With the Peak Design Strap, I also use their Capture Clip on my belt (works great with the Z-Finder attached). Best of both worlds. I'm always lugging around the 5D IV for hours on end through the woods, crossing streams, under waterfalls, you name it. At age 69 it really helps with the back and keeps the gear secure.
I've had mine since Nov 2012, and it's still a great workhorse. When I bought it, I was so in love that I changed my Facebook relationship status to being in a relationship with it. I haven't changed that status since, not even for my human. LOL. I'm always shooting fully manual, including white balance, and my love for the 5D Mkiii is as solid today as it was when I first unboxed it. I shoot using pretty high iso a lot as I do a lot of live music photography. It's a lovely machine. 😍🤩🥰
I bought a used 5D mk III this year from a seller in Japan. I'm very happy with it. The first problem I had with it was getting the menus to display in English, but was able to Google my way out of that. Now it's just kicking my backside with all of the bells and whistles. I haven't had any problem getting it to work well in manual and aperture priority mode, but I'm really overwhelmed with the various menu options. Mostly I take photos of birds, and some astronomy. Thanks for the video!
Criminally under subbed channel. I've used the Peak Design strap for over a year now and no dramas at all, I've hung the Pentax 6x7 off it while chasing the kids around without a problem, actually just bought a second one...
Thank you.. I agree! Maybe I should do a camera wrap video.. seems like the Peak Design strap has lots of fans.. thanks for your comments and support. Roy
I have discovered your channel way too late and I wish I did earlier. In terms of what brought me here, I will be buying a 5d mark 3 and I just wanted to get some idea of how it works. You are clearly very experienced and knowledgeable. I am really impressed by your videos because if I observed correctly you don't really cut and stitch the video, it is mostly just one continuous video. It is quite rare that people talk continuously that way and definitely shows how much you know about the subject. I am very happy to have found your channel.
I have two 5dm3s that I have traveled with and use a dual strap that hangs straight down from my shoulders. It connects across the back and clips in the front. The strap connects or the bottom screw and has a safety strap, as well.
I do large RAW on one card and small RAW to the other. The small file is for processing on my iPad while away from home and the large for processing at home. My during trip posts were over the top on my last trip to Switzerland.
Thanks so much Roy. I have the R5 and R6 and while I enjoy them both, I miss my 5D Mark III and several of my EF lenses. They were terrific! Sure, the R5 and R6 give you more keepers, but there’s nothing about my photos from the DSLR that are that much, if any worse, than the mirrorless cameras. Sorry that I ever sold the 5D and bought into mirrorless. I’m a hobbyist so the mirrorless cameras have way more bells and whistles than I need
Great comment! Thank You 🙏 I wonder how many oeople feel the same after making the mirrorless switch. It’s taken me about 6 months of everyday use to get comfortable with the R5. Still when I pick up the 5d3 it feels more comfortable and more familiar than any mirrorless camera.. For me it’s all about using the right tool for the job and the focussing improvements alone on the R5 make it a great tool. Good luck with your photography and remember it’s all a journey, enjoy what you currently have, while you have it and adjust accordingly further down the line.. best wishes. Roy
I recently bought a used 5D Mark iii and based my decision on watching videos like yours, so thank you! I am a newbie and do learn best visually however, so this video isn't really helping as I need to SEE how you are going about setting it up within the camera menus et al. I am still trying to figure out how to use this camera in a way that best utilizes what it has to offer for both photography and video. I am currently in college for Multimedia Communications and just did a video production course and struggled mightily throughout most of the quarter because I couldn't get the dang camera to AF correctly or consistently- I researched so many different channels trying to figure out my issues and find the settings that I needed, discovered that many of the camera settings the previous owner had used were the opposite of what I needed, but indeed learned a ton in the process, just wish it hadn't been so stressful. In any case, I appreciate your continued love of this camera and will look into more of your videos to see if you have some that can help me understand it better all the way around. The built-in mic is extremely noisy but had to use it for class last quarter and do my best to fix the sound in PPro later as I couldn't get my new lav mic kit to work with it, think the mic kit is faulty (sure of it because it didn't work with my Iphone either) and wondering if you can suggest a budget-friendly mic kit that works well with this camera. Sorry so verbose, thanks again! Cat-
Long time 5D III user here, so most of your settings make perfect sense to me (though we can always learn and adjust a bit more). As always, good information provided and credit to you Roy for continually being helpful to answer peoples questions. Have a good day sir!
Thanks John! Glad we are on roughly the same page with our settings.. Never stop learning is something I deeply believe. I do my best to keep up with the comments and questions but sometimes fall behind and then have a bit of a backlog.. you just leapfrogged! All the very best. RR
I got mine from park camera £760 last year it’s a joke the pictures darker them my cheap 600d and raw pictures grainy and tinted really worst of money. I loved my cheap camera but this full frame is joke in lowlights outdoors photos are great but for indoor it’s not what i expected.
still a great video to watch i used this for about the same amount of time as you for wildlife & macro thought i would blow the dust of it, still in pristine condition i will never let this go.
these cameras rock..... I have been using my Canon 5DSR ..... and man I love it and for my style of photography it works...... I use the Peak Design SL-MN-3 Camera Strap and also use the same strap on a Canon 1DX MK III ...... and the strap quality is the best and they look sexy and easy to take off to use your camera on a Tripod ...... you can pick up tags cheap and change them if you like...... they don't break ....Silent LV shoot MODE 2 is the best for landscaping it quiets the mirror slap for sharper images that are created by the mirror slapping .....
So glad the algorithm put you in my feed. You’ve got great content and this video in particular was what I need to make sure my new to me 5D mkiii is set up right. Bravo and Thanks, new subscriber now!
Hi Roy, I know that I may be a little late to the party where the 5D Mk3 is concerned, but I have recently added this camera to my armoury and I was looking for a quick guide to how best set the camera up in the menu. Your video fit the bill perfectly, so thank you very much indeed.
Great vid Roy. Just splashed out £349 on a "signs of heavy use" 5D3. Imagine my surprise when it turned up looking brand new with a LP-E6NH battery still sealed in its box! Absolute bargain in my eyes. Itching to get using it alongside my 6D.
Thanks for this video. I just purchased one used so I can practice! It’s been over 5 years since I touched a professional camera. My memory is pretty rusty on set up and settings. I am so excited!
I have been shooting with 5D Mark II for ages. your video was one of the best I have seen regarding settings. I would love mirrorless for the great focus and less weight, but nearing retirement , I will do my best to make my equipment work. Thanks for Your Video!
Wow really enjoyed this thank you. As I'm returning to photography after a break of a couple of years. Just purchased a 5dmk3 and found this content really informative. Your channel has fuelled my keenness to get shooting again 👍🏻. You have an excellent skill in presentation and I find your channel easy to watch and educational. I like the down to earth way you share your experience and knowledge with an obvious passion for photography. It's quite infectious to be honest. Glad I've found it and have subscribed. Looking forward to catching up with the rest of the videos over the coming days. Excellent content for those of us shooting canon. Thank you Roy. Keep the content flowing. 👍🏻👍🏻. Best regards.
What a lovely message. Thank you! I really appreciate your words and subscription. Glad to be a part of your return to photography and good luck with your new camera. Best wishes. Roy
Thank you soooo SO mcuh for the insight! I have a 5dm3 and its my daily shooter for all my personal work and my professional work! This video has been such a huge help and I really appreciate it
Thank you Roy I have copied everything you have said now I hope I can make it work??? You have done a great service to everyone that watches your video...
Thank you very much. I am quite new to the 5D Mk3 and this will help me immensely as I was unsure what all the function buttons enabled you to do. I will look out for any other tutorials you have done on this camera. I will eventually customise my buttons to as it will be useful once I have more experience. Thanks again Jane
Thanks Roy . I recently picked up one of these to replace a 6d (destroyed in a flood) and to compliment my 7dmkii. I love the image quality . I am gradually coming to terms with the control lay out . I use auto iso for birds in flight photography where high shutter speed at a specific aperture is often important . Very happy with my purchase .
I've been shooting an R6 since it came out, but was looking for an older pro body to take on sketchier locations, boats, etc. I picked up a 5DIII at my local camera shop for 500USD. It's a tank and the images are amazing. I certainly prefer it with certain lenses, and I enjoy using the old "focus/recompose" method of how I learned rather than relying on my R6's incredible tracking AF (which is necessary for some things, but sometimes it's too easy, and therefore not as rewarding, creatively) Great vid, as usual. Love your perspective.
i use it but at iso 800 at indoor events at night even with flash pictures start allready to lose quality so anything over iso 400 is not good on 5d mark 3
@@techgeek2994 Im a bit intrigued as to why you have low quality beyond 400 ISO, By no means am I saying you are wrong but its just that I shoot at much higher ISO and get reasonable quality. We each have our own levels of acceptance and thats all cool but I wonder what you are shooting and what settings your using and with what glass?
@@RoyRiley i didnt say it is not reasonable quality but its nowhere near compared at iso 200 level. When you shoot wedding you dont shoot at iso 800 and give client pictures for what they paid for. not with 5d mark 3 , yes with canon r6 or r5.I shoot at raw only and with no noise reduction applied there is a huge diffrence shooting at iso 200 compared to 800. you cant deny that. I use canon 24-70mm f2.8L mark 2 lens and sigma 85mm f1.4 art. At iso 800 noise is visible if not applying noise reduction . at iso 200 there is no noise at all. This is indoor night event photography. When somebody pays you 2000usd you dont give them pictures with noise . you want to give them highest quality photos .There is plenty videos of 5d mark 3 with iso 800 all over youtube and noise is visible .If you say that picture quality is same with iso 800 compaed to iso 200 that is your opinion. It is so much cleaner image at low iso levels . This is not 2022 camera that handles low light that well. canon r6 and r5 are good up to iso 2000 noise dont exist at all. but at 5d mark 3 oh yes it exist
@@techgeek2994 thanks for this. Ultimately these things are all subjective and all about personal choice so It’s good that you know what you like and have worked out how you like to shoot to get the results you wish for. That’s important. All the very best. Roy
black rapid the way to go, shoot MX standard equipment trackside, us a single steup for long lens, twin set with 70 200mm l and a 20 35mm l on the other side to balance it up
3:00 strap 4:20 settings 4:45 adjust back Aperture/ Manuel mode: shutter speed of 125th of a second; then build exposure ISO: don’t use auto, he starts at 400 Motor drive: single shot (soft) Matrix metering; gets Histogram, screen White balance (keep it on auto) 8:35 Menu
Great video content as always !!!!! I'm still using 5D Mkiii and believe it or not 5D Classic as back up (photos from the 5D Classic, still pretty good), anyway I was going to say that I stopped using the Canon straps years ago as I didn't find them very versatile and made my neck sore. So after some research I found a great strap from OP/TECH USA and as they're made of Neoprene holds the weight but no neck ache and easy to detach from camera when mounted on tripod so no blocking viewfinder. The best part it won't break the bank either. Keep the content coming as I find it very informative.
Really glad I stumbled across this. You compelled me to look at and eventually purchase the OP/TECH Super Classic Combo. I just got around to connecting it and trying to get acclimated last night, and wow, what a phenomenal difference. Versatile, smart, comfortable, clearly built to a durability standard to satisfy anyone. Bargain priced. Perfect.
So my 5d MK3 has arrived..... Wow it's an awesome bit of kit 👍🏻. Now watching this video again as a great "tutorial". So glad I found this Chanel. It's just so easy to watch and learn from. It's like an open university video lecture only way cooler 👍🏻. Superb presentation skills and so interesting to watch. I know I will be referring to this particular video frequently as I become acquainted with my 5dmk3. Thanks again for your superb quality yet practical and down to earth content. Really appreciated.
Ahhhh that’s a big one! Not sure I am yet qualified… but I am becoming qualified! So there will be an R5 set up video one day.. probably just when the mk2 is announced…
Super helpful overview, thank you Roy! I just got my mark III yesterday. I am a hobbyist, transferred to mirrorless (M50 mark II) three years ago. The mirrorless AF is amazing, but I did not like the look of the images. Got a 5D mark I, and am so much happier with the mark I than the M50. The only thing I miss on the mark I is lack of lens microadjustments, and as a result my F1.4-2 shots on the Sigma ART 35mm are soft, not as good as it could be. Also, I miss the ISO6400-12K ability. Well, the mark III has it all, plus astonishingly comfortable to hold with the battery grip (I prefer its feel to the R3!), and it is so comfortable and fast to switch between horizontal and portrait orientations. Also, the endless battery life with the grip is an incredible bonus. (Not so bad with mark I either, but it drains the battery, even if I shut the camera down! I always have to remove the battery and I often found I cannot shoot with it because I forgotten to remove it and now it has juice left for only a few shots...) So, my aim is to shoot with the Sigma ART 35mm on the mark III and the EF 85 F1.8 on the mark I as a second camera, and I do not have to change lenses on the field...
@@RoyRiley Thank you! When I saw your mark III in the video I thought, hey, is that a Sigma ART lens? It looks just like my setup. :) I love that lens. Cheers, Janos
Please I have an issue with my canon 5D mark iii when shooting pictures or videos what you see on the LCD screen is different from the final results you copy to your pc please why
Today I have and use a Canon 5D Mark iii as my main camera besides my iPhone. I use auto ISO 100-400. I shoot in manual mode. I don't shoot RAW rather I choose to shoot my photos in JPEG. I don't do any post editing so much to my photos. I mainly shoot flower n foliage photos. And some times buildings and clouds. Before I upgraded to the Canon 5D Mark iii, I used a Canon 5D Mark ii. I loved that camera. But I love the 5D Mark iii even more than the 5D Mark ii. In my experience the 5D Mark iii more intuitive to use as compared to the 5D Mark ii. The auto focus is way better on the 5D Mark iii as compared to the 5D Mark ii. Both the Cannon 5D Mark ii and 5D Mark iii take equally good photos in my opinion. The Canon 5D Mark ii only has one Compact Flash card slot in it. But the Canon 5D Mark iii has two card slots-Compact Flash, and SD card. I only use an SD card in my 5D Mark iii for convenience as my iMac has a SD card slot reader built in. Thus I don't need to use an external USB card reader to transfer my photos to my iMac.
You are awesome! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I am going back into photography and this has been such a great refresher to connect with my 5D mark iii!
I have a love hate relationship with camera straps. With wildlife being my main interest I am often set up in hides or on tripods and in that situation a strap of any kind is most definitely a pain in the arse. However, there are other subjects and situations where I need to hang a camera from a strap and that is why I have moved over to the Peak Design straps. Being able to unclip the strap easily and quickly is a definite benefit. The little button attachments remain fixed to bodies and lenses where appropriate and a strap can be quickly attached when required. I was initially sceptical about these button fixings but I have to say that I have not had any problems with them to date and hopefully never will. They are constructed in such a way that if they should become worn a different colour shows through and thus warns you to change it. The straps themselves are very easily and smoothly adjusted which is great at a concert or sports event where I may want to have two cameras hanging at different levels. Apologies for long winded comment on a strap, something I would never have expected to do 🙄.
Haha! Camera straps seem to be a subject close to many peoples hearts! Literally and figuratively… thanks for your thoughts on this.. I may well explore the Peak Design route… all the best. RR
Good Lord 10x8! Started my career processing hand processing black and white large frame negs back in the 80’s. You must have some stories to tell! Welcome to the world of digital
@@RoyRiley I went into the Army when I turned 17 I new that being a radio telephone operator would get me no where in life? We had a great crafts shop at Ft Campbell, Kentucky where kids like me could go to and learn photography after getting off duty each working day and on the weekends. I was lucky enough after one year of learning from some great instructors that I was able to go to work in a Public Information Office as a photographer where I sat and listened to some highly intelligent soldiers that wrote and published a sort of news paper or maybe they had it printed else where as it has been many years since 1957-1962! Thanks Sargent SAVINO where ever you might be...
I was fortunate I landed a job with Madori Shamoda he was one of the very best still life photographer in the USA we were in NYC along with Irving Penn in the same building he was very famous back in the 60's he liked my portfolio but would not hire me as everyone employed had to speak two languages? Mr Shamoda was not only the best he was the kindest man I would ever work for, God Bless him... I am sure I have miss written Madori's name as 62 years is a long time... @@RoyRiley
I still really like the 5Diii too, but rarely use it these days as it's a hefty beast.. as are the lenses... I started to use Auto ISO with my Xpro2 and have migrated it the the Canon also.. I found it a game changer with the Fuji's and it works well with the 5D even if I limit it more than on the Fuji, which is brilliant in low light/high ISO..
Cheers Gareth! Good to hear from you and to get your thoughts on this. Been thinking about the old days of newspapers lately with the passing of quite a few of the legends. In particular Roger Bamber who was a great inspiration to me as a young snapper. Hope your keeping well. R
@@RoyRiley Yes all's well in French France... There have been a few of the old Fleet Street photogs leave us in recent months.. I remember Roger Bamber's work from when I was in London, Also Dave Caulkin veteran AP staffer next to whom I worked on a number of stories, and Eamon McCabe, who was a big influence on my sports shooting and one of the photographers who really made me want to get into press work.. None of us are getting any younger.. Regards Gareth
I will be getting another 5D Mark iii at some point. Love my R6, but it lacks that pastel quality that this camera faithfully produced when dealing with many colors.
My canon 5d mark 2 stopped focusing right, and also 4 days before a event i had to shoot. It really broke me as i got it as a gift. Im borrowing a canon 5d mark 3 and Im crossing my fingers on figuring it out before the event.
I have used BlackRapid Camera Harnesses and Straps for years and I will trust no other; check 'em out. I also still rock 2 Mk 3s in our business and still love them after all these years.
I record RAW to one card that I will cut/paste/remove files off of and the second card I record JPG images and NEVER delete them. Or once a year I may drag then all into a backup. But its almost like a long term in camera backup. And I use 512GB SD card now days.
Great to see another video Roy - love hearing your thoughts from someone who works with cameras for a living. BTW, I use Peak Design Slide strap and loads of the tie-on clips on my different set-ups. So easy, so flexible and there is nothing on the strap shouting out the camera brand. Helps with being discrete and for security. Can't recommend enough and if you're on a tripod it takes a second to remove them.
Cheers! Always nice to get a positive comment. Good luck on your journey. FF can be a challenge at first but worth the effort. If you haven’t already pick up a 50mm f1.8 and shoot wide open
Thanks for sharing this valuable informations from you as a professional. I really like the MkIII cause its easy to use and it takes great images. I have seen a video on youtube, where a photographer (videographer) switched back from a R5/R6, cause they have a moire problem when making videos. Cheers.
Interesting video, thanks very much. I have auto power off to minimum on all my cameras as a half press on the shutter button wakes it up for my next lot of pointless photos...
I'm a total beginner at serious photography. I've been shooting video for a few year, for my church livestream and decided to go into still photography, as well. I've borrowed this camera. It's not really a good beginner camera, is it? I'm looking for a camera that's more suited to someone at my skill level. How would the Canon Rebel T7 or something else be as a starter camera? I'm really interested in pursuing this as a hobby and maybe a bit more down the line. Thanks for any tips. Great video. I'll watch it again; it's really helped in understanding the menu settings.
This thing was / is a pro level tool and needs a level of skill to get the best from. Imagine using a formula one car for your first driving lesson.. it’s possible but not ideal! A rebel would probably be a better place to start.. that said, it’s the learning and understanding process that you need to go through regardless of the camera. Hope that makes sense! All the best to you. RR
Hi, try ThinkTank straps if you're looking for a grippy strap (no horrid logos either, my total pet hate!). I used many of your settings on my Canon dslrs, though I've been keen on autoISO for a long time, and Program mode too (I don't care what the others say...!). The R5 took me months to set up as I like, so many options. So I'll wait for your R5 settings video to see if I've missed anything!
Cheers Andrew! I do not know why I have not tried Thinktank straps.. I use loads of their gear and it’s always been very good. In particular I have the airport roller which has covered a fair few miles but still works perfectly. Thanks for the heads up.. The R5 setting video will be an absolute monster!
I use the slide. The premium, not the lite. It’s great Roy. A bit bulky compared to the original strap. But it so easy to use, comfortable and versatile… Really. With the clips it becomes interchangeable, can use the same strap with every camera easy… And it is strong, seems like a seatbelt…😊 haven’t tried anging my one weight! 😂 Here in Portugal cost 60€. Hood to see you back Roy! KRegards
Hi Roy, one of the issues I came across with my Mkiii is inconsistent WB. Not sure why, never experienced it with my Mki or any other camera. Updated firmware and reset setting, etc. Anyway, may be useful to someone to know about setting Kelvin using the quick "Q" menu and setting with the wheelie dealie. Or setting WB shift. I shoot in RAW+JPG and really like the photos straight from camera, so this may not affect everyone. For me it was huge to find a workaround. I bought an a7iii but still can't come to part with my Canons. I'd put the inages from the 5d Mkiii with the 100mm f1.8 up against anything and be happy. Fantastic cameras and a completely different feel (at least to me) that mirrorless can't quite capture, although all cameras seem to be amazing these days. Anyway, cheers mate.
Interesting thoughts.. I shoot RAW and dick about with the WB in post so can’t comment too much but always thought the mk3 was fantastic on the WB score.
Influencer "R6MKII review videos" are flooding my YT page now. So refreshing to see someone talking about how they have used same camera for years! Got my 5D MKII dirt cheap few years back. Still shooting with it and I am really happy with quality of pictures it produces. Is AF system way better on MKIII compared to MKII? There are more AF points but is it better?
Thanks for the support! In my opinion Slightly better AF on the mk3 over the mk2. It’s certainly not a huge step up though and good technical skill from the user is by far the most important factor. Low light AF is a bit better and the overall speed and accuracy slightly improved but we are talking maybe 20% better rather than night and day.. my honest opinion.. stick with the Mk2 and make the very absolute best of it! RR
@@RoyRiley Thank you so much for your reply 👌🏼I will definitely continue with MKII. Mirrorless cameras need to mature for some time before those will get my attention
Hi Roy, Very informative as usual. Always been a Canon fan - currently using a Classic 5d, Mk 3 and a Mk 4. Quick question regarding the dual card slots on the Mk 3 & Mk 4 what raw setting are you particularly using ? Cheers Tony
I just use plain old RAW on both cards. I’m not a fan of any of the compact or smaller RAW options. I just want as much data as possible. Often people will use one card for RAW and the other to catch JPEGs which I guess makes sense for some uses.
Hi. Is 5d mark 3 with 24-105 + 50 mm lens, 2 battery, 64 gb card and 60,000 shutter count a good deal to take in 650 USD? Kindly let me know because I need to decide this offer camera today. I have an Egypt trip upcoming soon so I want to own a camera of mine. Also, how to transfer photos from it to my mobile?
Greetings! I purchased a used 5DMarkiii. It's a love/hate relationship. When I put a battery in the camera, and use it, the battery is fine, otherwise, it zaps the battery. Like the next day, it's dead. I don't feel safe to use the camera for a wedding. Checked filmware and said it was up to date. Any suggestions, Roy? I need to work with the settings to - works great for a car show, but not for movement. My 70D shoots better in low light situations where i can't get the other to register.
Interesting you talking about straps. I’ll sell you my old “EOS digital” strap from my 1Ds mkII if you want, it’s a lot more “weathered” than your 5D3 strap. 😉 Serious mode, I’m using a blackrapid sling because it’s super low key, works lovely under a long jacket and can conceal even a bulky fast 85 or 70-200 anchored off the collar because of the sling system it’s super fast to bring the camera up. I’ve heard good things about the Magpul MS4 which is designed to support rifles in a combat situation, but judging by your accent you’re also uk based so getting gun gear is probably quite hard.
Afraid I’ve already got a boat load of old knackered Canon straps.. way back to the T90 and A1 I believe. I have yet to try theBlack Rapid but hear good thing.. yup no gun gear I’m afraid.
Hi Roy, thanks for deep-diving into the settings. Very helpful! I've been using this camera for a couple of years now, mostly outdoors in well lit situations so I never really tinkered with high ISO's. A friend of mine askes me to take some pictures of a certain ceremony which is indoors. What's the maximum ISO you're comfortable using with this camera?
Very much down to individual taste and the quality of light available . 1600 - 3200 ish.. some people don’t like it above 800 but I’ve always been happy a little higher.. just edited this comment because I initially thought we were talking about the mk2!
Roy I'd like to ask your opinion on something. I'm looking at getting another full frame camera. I have the older 5D Mark II I've had it for a while I love it. I'm thinking I would like to add another full frame my options are. A 5D Mark III 5D Mark IV or 6D or 6D Mark II. Which one would you go for and why? I've looked them all over but I can't decide. In your vast experience I'm sure you've had all of these or a few of them which would you like? I'm looking at your 5D Mark III video now really impressing me. Thank you for the video by the way.
Hi Jeffery. This come down to budget and requirement. 5d4 is the best but all the other cameras you mention are all very very capable. Bang for bucks the best value will probably be 5d3. 6d Mk1 is showing its age but still very capable. 6d2 I have not shot with so cannot comment. I think the truth here is that all of these cameras are very very good. With decent lenses, good technique and a creative eye they are all capable of producing amazing photographs in nearly any circumstance. If in doubt just stick with what you have and focus on getting the very best from it. Hope this helps. Roy
I picked up a great 5D Mark 3 a couple of weeks ago. It came from Japan. It has a low shutter count. 5870 to be exact. It has a few blemishes on the bottom of it. It functions perfectly. I'm in love with it. I can see why you carried it for seven years. Thanks for all of your advice. Keep up the great work. 6:00
Hello Roy I want to know the best settings for aperture and ISO to increase sharp in the image and show facial details for night photography of weddings and interior photography
I LOVE IT!
I heard p Diddy loved it.
I'm indeed grateful, I recently acquired 5D M3 AND I have struggled to set my camera, but it's now all solved courtesy of you Sir.
Bought a beat up one on ebay for 235€ as an upgrade from my 600D I got 5 years ago when my dad upgraded. Especially the Magic Lantern Capabilities on top of this Legendary stills Camera make it the absolute best value I could get for my small Budget.
Still a great camera to this day. Mine is battered too but it never misses a beat. Good luck with it. RR
Great story George. Glad you are getting g what you need with the classic mk3
I still use my 5D mark iii that I purchased new, so I found this video very interesting.
@@RoyRiley difficult question for me to answer! I love them all.
@@ДмитрийК-ь8у what a brilliant comment! Thanks man 🙏 much appreciated. RR
Just borrowed this body from a friend coming from Olympus and this video was very helpful.
I am also a huge fan of the peak design anchor system and straps. The versatility is unmatched as well as their warranty and customer service.
I've got a 5D Mark ll . Definitely want a Mark lll. Thank you.
I could speak to so many things in this video, but I'll keep it short:
I LOVE Peak Design's system!
Around 8 years later, with Canon 5DS R, same menu and thank you from a returning Canon user to simplify it all.
Glad it was helpful! All the best. RR
So helpful. This is the only video the shows step by step like this. Exactly what I needed and what I was looking for. 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Happy to be of help. Go forth and make great pictures!
Lovely story! Really pleased your still feeling it after all these years. Thats the real thing!
Can i know which lens do you use it please??i use 70-200 but i am not happy with it
I bought a used 5D mk III this year from a seller in Japan.
Good luck with it David

Criminally under subbed channel. I've used the Peak Design strap for over a year now and no dramas at all, I've hung the Pentax 6x7 off it while chasing the kids around without a problem, actually just bought a second one...

Thank you for your message and support. Glad this is useful for you. RR
@@tompurvis1261 Wow, thank you for the tip! I did not know that can be done. :)

Very happy with my purchase .
Thanks for your thoughts on this Anthony. Maybe I will give auto ISO a throw next time I’m shooting. Feel like I’m missing out! R
I've been shooting an R6 since it came out, but was looking for an older pro body to take on sketchier locations, boats, etc. I picked up a 5DIII at my local camera shop for 500USD. It's a tank and the images are amazing. I certainly prefer it with certain lenses, and I enjoy using the old "focus/recompose" method of how I learned rather than relying on my R6's incredible tracking AF (which is necessary for some things, but sometimes it's too easy, and therefore not as rewarding, creatively)
Great vid, as usual. Love your perspective.
Cheers Chris. Interesting to read your opinion on this. I have very similar thoughts. All the best and good luck with your mk3. R
i use it but at iso 800 at indoor events at night even with flash pictures start allready to lose quality so anything over iso 400 is not good on 5d mark 3

Thank you! I did have one of those op tech straps a few years ago. Perfect for big lenses!
Perfect.

I always have to remove the battery and I often found I cannot shoot with it because I forgotten to remove it and now it has juice left for only a few shots...)
So, my aim is to shoot with the Sigma ART 35mm on the mark III and the EF 85 F1.8 on the mark I as a second camera, and I do not have to change lenses on the field...
@@ShutterNChill nice set up! Glad it’s working for you

Thanks for this! Sounds like you know exactly what you need to do to get the result you wish for. That’s perfect! Cheers. RR

RR

It will all be OK. Have faith x
You look sharp, dude! The video was nice too...
Must have been a good day.. mostly I look like grizzly bear just after a car crash
Thanks Cliff! Everyone loves the peak design straps! I will consult the piggy bank and see whether he oinks or not
Thank you for this, Roy, still in the process of making friends with my first FF, still learning :) Best wishes!
Cheers! Always nice to get a positive comment. Good luck on your journey. FF can be a challenge at first but worth the effort. If you haven’t already pick up a 50mm f1.8 and shoot wide open
already playing with 50 f1.4 and 135 f2, brilliant lenses, thanks for the good thought😊
Thanks for sharing this valuable informations from you as a professional. I really like the MkIII cause its easy to use and it takes great images. I have seen a video on youtube, where a photographer (videographer) switched back from a R5/R6, cause they have a moire problem when making videos. Cheers.
Thanks Mike! Glad you found it interesting. R
Interesting video, thanks very much. I have auto power off to minimum on all my cameras as a half press on the shutter button wakes it up for my next lot of pointless photos...
Great tips. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
RR
Peak design is the way to go
Great blog, what is the max size of memory I can use?
Awesome content 👍🏽
Cheers Chris!
KRegards
@@gjss1988 I will look into it! Thank You. RR
Is there a way to shoot color and B&W at the same time
Great video. Than you.
Cheers Croaker!
Hi Roy,
Very informative as usual.
My 70-200 focas not proper settings delite by me in 5d mark III plz suggest
Yes, that price is almost the price of the lens
Very helpful.
Cheers Jack
Serious mode, I’m using a blackrapid sling because it’s super low key, works lovely under a long jacket and can conceal even a bulky fast 85 or 70-200 anchored off the collar because of the sling system it’s super fast to bring the camera up.
My camera does not let me enable HDR mode on. I see it on my meny but its not letting me select it
Hi Roy, thanks for deep-diving into the settings.
Nice one thanks
Cheers Tim
What settings are you currently using? What lens are you shooting with?
