Thanks for the video Mate…. Ive had my 5D MKiV since 2018 and I love how much of a tank it is - Ive gone to buy a R5 a few times but for my style of shooting it isnt really justified at the moment! One thing I will add to your video or have a different opinion about is that of the camera straps - I used the Canon supplied for a few months when I was touring, and I discovered that it just hurt and doesn't feel secure when just over my shoulder. I opted for a Peak Design Slide strap & haven't looked back - the quick-release system is excellent for attaching, and once the strap is on, it's comfortable to wear all day, and I always have the canon battery grip attached, so a bit more heft! I can reccomend!
Thanks Scott! I have looked at those peak design straps a few times and been very tempted. Maybe I should give one a whirl.. my only concern is whether this little dangling things are strong enough.. we will see!
@@RoyRiley Roy, I can tell you that I have been using the Peak Design Slide (the large version) since I purchased it in early 2018 after lugging my 5DiV & Battery Grip around on a 14-day cruise using just the supplied neck strap! So far, the capture clips (I think that's what the Dangly Things are called) have stood up exceptionally well (touch wood). I have carried my 5DiV with battery grip & a 70-200 F2.8 L ISII lens with 1.4 converter (so a hefty setup, you will agree, I'm sure), shooting many full day events and the slide is just awesome - I kind of throw the camera around my back fron the shooting position and it slips around comfortably and securely while being comfortable on the shoulder - I love it - best gear I have ever purchased “HONESTLY”! Let me know if you take the plunge….. Interested!
For the mark iv, what's the highest iso you have used in low light without doing editing? I do school events indoors for my son's school, special needs, low lights and many children are sensitive to flash.
Well the 5d4 is very capable in low light. 3200. 6400 should be possible but there may be some noise..Might need a bit of noise reduction in post to clean the files up. Really it’s a juggling act and every situation is different. Quality of light plays a big part, as does the lens you are using.. as does the subject and the intended purpose of the image. It’s all very subjective! What lens are you using and what exposures are you typically getting?
Hi Joshua. Personally I wouldn’t go that high.. just because you can doesn’t always mean you should! That said we each have to find our own sweet spot with these things depending on our specific requirement’s. Treat extreme high iso with extreme care would be my advice. Happy New Year!
I mimicked these setting exactly and am having focus issues when either I or the subject move, I have a wedding to shoot in the next week and I’m at a loss, they look ok until I get them on the computer and the face and eyes are not sharp. Any help/advice appreciated.
OK. So my settings are a starting point, they will not be perfect for every situation and need to be adjusted according to each specific scenario. Everytime either you or the subject moves you need to refocus . ai servo is good for moving subjects but you need to keep your finger or thumb half pressed so the camera can track focus. Are you shooting the wedding as a professional shoot or just for fun?
Hello Roy! Thank you! I've had my Canon 5d Mark iv for two years... and am finally seeking out help! Love the camera! And your setup and settings are a big help to finding my way!!
I was gifted this camera and as I am going over the settings along with you, my camera doesn't seem to have the same. Did they update the models, perhaps? I take great photos but this upgrade has me so bummed out. I guess I don't know my settings as well as I need to. I got away with using my Rebel for years, even with a giant zoom for the sports pics I take, but now I feel I am driving a lamborghini with the knowledge of a station wagon. 😜 Trying to learn all that I can.
Excellent video, thanks! Just upgraded from MkII to IV and you help sort out the new operations. One question: How do you get the DOF preview to show the focus change without the image in Live View getting dark at f22? Thanks
It’s my starting point. Every situation is different and we need to learn to adjust all the settings according to our requirements. There is no magic bullet I’m afraid!
Wow Roy you sound sooooo Professional. I'm excited to hear what you have to say. Learned how to use that Star in the Green area........would have been nice for you to do an example......IJS

Has anyone run into an issue of auto rotate not working & know how to fix it? I have it turned on for both camera & computer but it doesn't recognize it. Such a great video though & definitely wanna look into the live view attachment!
Hey Roy, I have set my canon 5d mark iv to factory setting twice, my shutter is set to 1/8000 in menu yet it still wont shoot no faster than 1/125 can you tell me how i can fit it so that i can sett the shutter speed to my desire? or what am i doing wrong. Thanks
I use back button focusing as well, but I always have it set to servo. Is there any benefit to having it set to single shot when you back button focus? I figure that having AF independent of the shutter release button means that you can just release the AF-button if you want to make it stop follow focus for re-composing or whatever (effevtively giving you single shot without changing modes), and if you want it to track you just hold it in while you fire away. I've always seen that as the big benefit of back button focusing; you're always in the right focus mode. I'd be interested to hear more about why you'd use single shot. Thanks for a great video!
I think everyone has to find their own way with this kind of thing. I personally like the confirmation beep of one shot when shooting in a static environment although I do use servo lots too. I think as AF systems evolve then most likely continuous tracking focus will become the norm.. certainly with the R cameras it’s almost there already.. Sometime my techniques are a bit out of date so I’m always open to new ways of doing things. Beginning my career working with manual focus and then the long slog through the early days of AF when it was slow and inaccurate have probably left their mark on some of my techniques ( hence then need for the confirmation beep!) Ultimately we should all do whatever we are happy with and what results in the highest number of sharp pictures! Thanks for your thoughtful comment and wishing you a peaceful Christmas. RR
8:42 .. you are not only 'transposing' the location of the AF point in the mode you are using, that's the third option, you have the one that memorize the AF mode as well as the location .. you can set an specific AF spot holding the cam horizontally, and turning it vertically choose AF zone (for instance) .. once you'll bring back your camera in horizontal position, the AF will switch back to AF spot, .. tilt the camera vertically, back to AF zone ... crazy isn't it ! And you can memorize 2 differents mode holding the cam vertically, with the grip up, or grip down..
Hi Roy, for some reason my AF options are one shot and servo but no AI Servo. I cant figure out why I don't have the AI Servo option. Can you help? I've googled, watched videos and no luck. Thanks
My personal choice is to shoot RAW. I use the standard colour profile and do my editing and applying any presets or profiles in Post Production. What I want from the camera is a clean RAW without anything added or taken away in the form of a picture style etc.TBH I’m Not sure if you can add a custom one to this camera
Thank you for your lovely comment Hannah. One shot for when the subject is static. servo when the subject might move in some way. I mainly use back button focus and flip between servo and one shot all the time. I don’t use AI focus. Honestly there is no ultimate right answer. You just have to find what works best for you and gives you the results you wish for. Good luck with it. R

Haha! Don’t worry.. these things are tougher than they look.. tools of the trade rather than delicate flowers..that’s why I will stick with Canon. Pretty much bomb proof so far! Over the years I have done far worse things with cameras than put them face down on the table!
Hello Roy, thank you kindly for taking the time to show your setup and settings. It really helped me familiarize with this new body I'm using for work at the moment. I've shot on a various bodies and each one is always a new little puzzle! Anyway, I was wondering, in the future will you possibly show a live shooting scenario with these settings? I may be being a baby but I love your instruction! Thank you plenty once again, xx
No problem! It is always a case of evolving as we go along with cameras. Glad to of been of some assistance. I want to do lots more videos including some “behind the scenes “. Unfortunately it’s a bit tricky because it just me and trying to film while shooting a professional assignment is not easy! I will make it happen though! However in the meantime anything in particular you struggle with?
Hello Roy, thank you for taking the time to explain a bit more on the 5D Mk Iv, I really love the camera. You mentioned the liveview screen as an EVF with a snap on eye piece. I see a number of them online that do not look exactly like yours. Would you kindly share the Make and Model of yours? Thank you again and an excellent video!! John Casey
Hard to tell without seeing all the other settings. A few thoughts - Beep only works in One Shot AF not AI servo. Beep volume up? Might also be around your AF zone settings. Set it to single rather than multi zone and try again. Hope you get it sorted. R
Extremely informative and helpful video, thank you! Just out of curiosity, do you already have or are you considering getting one of newer R mirrorless cameras and if so, which one would be your top pick?
The R6 is more than adequate for most things and the fact that it’s so much cheaper and uses SD cards so memory is much cheaper and the files are quicker to edit. Hi f your not cropping too much or blowing up beyond poster size than the R6 might be worth a look. Focussing is very good if you can cope with an EVF.
@@tomalmeidafotografia Thanks Tom! Great advice. I am not the best at taking ultimate care of my gear. Normally its on the road with me on assignment. Hello Roy, what some brilliant information you've contained within this video. Id really appreciate another confirmation of my thoughts as to my Camera Upgrade. I have a few L Lenses and a 5D MK III - With Genuine battery grip- I have loved this camera, its taken a real beating in all weathers and well travelled. I have been hankering after upgrading for a while, In the Last year Ive been really Set On the 5D MK IV - I realise with Canon dropping future development of any further EF lenses - this will probably be the very last in this series & could be discontinued at any point. I realise the R6 would possibly be a technically better choice, as I can use all the lenses etc, However Im NOT a lover of the smaller body due to my larger hands, having hired one they haven't got that Tank like build quality, and I found it cramped. Although the viewfinder can be flipped - I found this a big disadvantage and hinderance, I would rather the larger LCD on the MKiv. I photograph wildlife, mainly insects - I have sold images and done paid work technically im a amateur. Do You think im Bonkers going for a 5D MKiv in 2022, the technical improvements over the MKIII I would be delighted with alone.
Hi Mark. Sounds like you have done your homework and should go with your gut instinct. I do not think you will make a bad decision whichever way you go. All the cameras you mention are all very capable and will enable you to produce amazing pictures. 5d4 really is a well evolved camera and does most things very very well. However the improved focusing on the R cameras is significantly better in my opinion. My tendency is to always say stick with what you already have and just work at getting better with your existing kit but in your case I think you already have your mind set on something new. To throw a curve ball into the mix.. ever thought about a 90d??
@@RoyRiley Wow! Thanks for your reply, I really appreciate it! I agree with you 100 percent sticking to the kit you have and improving skills with that, but my 5D MKIII is well battered and has about 160K Shutter actuations - so im getting a bit edgy ! Ive never considered the 90D - But just checked out the specs & a couple of user reviews - just mainly to see controls etc. This may actually make more sense! A bigger Camera than R6 for my bigger hands, and newer focusing tech! Keep the excess money tucked away for future kit! Im certainley looking forward to checking out more of your videos too! You have some interesting Material! Thanks for your time & great suggestion !
@@markc1844 I agree with the small camera for large hands. I decided to go with the Mark IV 2 years ago for that very reason. @@martikagartman8566 Thanks for your great reply & thoughts! I went with the Mark IV & grabbed a new one before they go! and im delighted I did,its fantastic! the other issue I failed to point out is the MK IV has the massive advantage of the Optical Viewfinder, for manual focus - particularly in Macro. Im delighted with the many improvements over my MK III, not dissing that Camera though as it was fantastic. I really really Hope Canon don't ditch their DSLRS totally. We could dream of a 45MP MK V with IBIS - but sadly I don't think it will happen. Enjoy your photography & Godbless the both of you too!
The focus in live view mode doesn't work for me. Nothing happens after I set all my options the same way. Starting to think I've bought a broken camera
@@RoyRiley The strap-to-clip connection is the same as the strap's connection to the camera. The clips themselves have been solid for me. The spring takes effort to get off, which I like, but if you don't pull and hear that click putting it on, it's not attached.
well second hand in the Uk they seem to range from about £900 - £1900 depending on condition. you can get a new one from a decent dealer for around £2800.
This camera body might be old but I like the camera and I'm going to buy me a full frame camera and it will be the Canon 5d mark 4 cause it takes wonderful pictures and you can't beat that. And with all the new cameras out I will get it at a cheap price hopefully one that's in mint condition and not something someone trying to get rid off
I just bought a brand new Canon 5D Mark IV and when testing it out, it seems the counter (the one that counts how many images are left for the memory card) isn't working properly. After clicking the shutter, it's constantly resetting to the previous number. Shooting in RAW, but it also happens with JPEG, etc. Does yours do this too? I have taken a video of the problem which you can see here: ruclips.net/video/wNLltnMKnuo/видео.html. The company I bought it from is telling me it's normal, but I don't have another one to test and see for myself.
You will need to do further test but maser on what you have said I believe this is quite normal. When you take a frame the camera makes a “worst case data judgement” and sets the remaining frames accordingly. as it processes the frame it realises that maybe there is a bit more space on the card because the worst case data is not playing out and so resets the remaining frames again.. this all plays out very quickly and varies depending on settings and card speed.. The big question is.. is every frame you are shooting being recorded in full size on the memory card??? You should do some real word tests to calm your mind and prove the reliability of your new camera. Do not take any one else’s word for it… test, test test and believe in your own results. Hope this helps?? RR
@@RoyRiley Thank you for your response. Yes, I checked the images and they were all there and in the right size, so no issues there. I'll take it out for a run later this week and test some more.

Zacuto Z-finder? *face-palm* Wish I'd thought of that years ago, especially as I bought the 5d4 for a trip to Antarctica where I had a very small weight limit for luggage and wanted a single body for stills and 4k video. Straps. I shifted to Peak Design straps. They have these dongje things which attach to the camera and the strap snaps into those. They're sold, haven't failed me once in four years, but become useful for 1) shifting a strap between bodies 2) since I shift between video and photo, helpful for getting the strap out of the way if I've gone to a video fluid-head tripod, so I never have to worry about the strap snagging. It goes right into the modified gas mask pouch strapped to my leg with my alternate lenses for the day. Gas mask pouch - yeah, picked one up at an army surplus store. Cut down one of those cardboard things from a grocery store for carrying 6-packs of wine bottles. Works surprisingly well. I can carry one or two lenses, a couple of spare batteries, a couple of small desiccant packs and microfiber, right where I can reach them on my thigh. Even has enough room to line it with some sherpa fleece. I started this on the aforementioned Antarctica trip. When you get to land in a location for only an hour carrying things in a backpack becomes an issue. Stopping, pulling the bag off, setting it down (on ice/snow), unzip, fish around, etc... Too slow! It's come in handy on other international trips when with a tour group, and, again, we might only be somewhere for 15-20 minutes before it's off to the next location! C1-3 settings. I like to shoot HDR, so my C1 is my HDR mode - 5 shot bracket, 2-stops between with base shutter speed at 1/1000. From there, typically adjusting exposure via aperture and ISO. (If handheld or monopod). I can slow shutter speed if on a tripod. C2 and C3 are configured for video. C2 is my 4k, 24p video with shutter at 1/50. For film/video you typically want your shutter at twice the frame rate. C3 is for 1080p/60p. This is in case I want to shoot for slow motion. My other big takeaway from this video is I really do need to remap some of my buttons. There are some controls that aren't quite where I want them, and I just haven't thought about remapping. This does mean I'll also have to set up my C1-C3 again... But that doesn't really take long. Thanks for the video. Sorry for the long post. Didn't intend to go so in depth.
@@RoyRiley T'was my wife who thought it would work. She was right! Mine to drop in the cardboard spacers. Only works for certain lens sizes. Anything bigger than the 24-70 f/2.8 is right out.
Interested!
@@scottmuir2385 Interesting stuff Scott.. I will have a look
Thanks! We seem to have a similar shooting style.
@@RoyRiley I use 20-70 (f2.8). I usually set aperture at f4.5, and ss at 200, lots of children that love to run at this school.
Thinking of buying this over the R5.
That’s a tricky decision to make.. both brilliant cameras
@@RoyRiley I like the "analog-ness" of the 5D, and I already have great EF glass!

Hey Roy, just learned there's an extended iso settings (H1, H2) Any advice with using them? I still only have access to 32000 after applying.

Nice one Teri! Glad to be of help. R
Wow I can't wait until I buy this camera I just want my pictures to be Sharp and in focus lol
Something to keep in mind is that some settings will only show if you're in live view, and some show when you're using the OVF. 😁
Excellent video, thanks! Just upgraded from MkII to IV and you help sort out the new operations. One question: How do you get the DOF preview to show the focus change without the image in Live View getting dark at f22? Thanks
Turn iso to auto momentarily is one way
Hi Roy. Thank you so much. What flash trigger are you using on the hotshoe in the beginning of the video?
It’s the Godox Xpro trigger. Works well with all the godox flashes
5D IV user with the Z-Finder from Zacuto also. Never seen anyone else use the Z-finder. Works great for handheld video too I might add.
Originally got mine for shooting video on the mark 3 but have frankensteined it for stills these days!
Is this the settings you use to take professional photos? I have yet to figure it out 😭
It’s my starting point.

Thanks
I’m afraid without having the camera in front of me I cannot really help. Take it in to a camera shop or repair?
Hi Roy, I'm new to the world of concert and event photography. I'm looking for a powerful and professional lens. Can you recommend one?
do you know if there is a way to set up the viewfinder that there is >>ONLY BLACK
its a blind bambi from me im afraid..otherwise known as 'no idea'
RR
@@RoyRiley Thank you very much for your reply! Keep up the good work!
8:42 .. you are not only 'transposing' the location of the AF point in the mode you are using, that's the third option, you have the one that memorize the AF mode as well as the location .. you can set an specific AF spot holding the cam horizontally, and turning it vertically choose AF zone (for instance) .. once you'll bring back your camera in horizontal position, the AF will switch back to AF spot, .. tilt the camera vertically, back to AF zone ... crazy isn't it ! And you can memorize 2 differents mode holding the cam vertically, with the grip up, or grip down..
You learn something new everyday! Cheers for sharing. R
Hi Roy, for some reason my AF options are one shot and servo but no AI Servo. I cant figure out why I don't have the AI Servo option. Can you help? I've googled, watched videos and no luck. Thanks

That’s what aI focus is for, to detect when something suddenly moves rapidly. Until then it will act as 1 shot mode and adapt for moving subjects

Do yo shoot with the "monochrome" setting in the camera?
Didn’t see anything here about Picture Styles or how to edit/instal new ones on the canon 5d. Is this even possible? If so, how?
My personal choice is to shoot RAW. I use the standard colour profile and do my editing and applying any presets or profiles in Post Production. What I want from the camera is a clean RAW without anything added or taken away in the form of a picture style etc.TBH I’m Not sure if you can add a custom one to this camera
Do you find one shot, Servo, or AI focus to be more sharp when shooting portraits?
Thank you for your lovely comment Hannah. One shot for when the subject is static. servo when the subject might move in some way. I mainly use back button focus and flip between servo and one shot all the time. I don’t use AI focus. Honestly there is no ultimate right answer. You just have to find what works best for you and gives you the results you wish for. Good luck with it. R
Great video thank you Roy. I changed my set button to ISO and it's much easier to use than the tiny button on top of the camera!
Great video. I wanted to make a comment on how much of a brave man you are by putting your camera face down on the glass. When I see people do this, it gives me the heebee jeebees. Great channel!
John Casey
Zacuto Z finder. Can’t remember exactly which one… Expensive but good.
Hi Roy! When i enable the beep button so i know my pics are in focus it doesn’t beep, the focus square just stays blue and no beep. Any ideas?
Hard to tell without seeing all the other settings. A few thoughts - Beep only works in One Shot AF not AI servo. Beep volume up? Might also be around your AF zone settings. Set it to single rather than multi zone and try again. Hope you get it sorted. R
Extremely informative and helpful video, thank you! Just out of curiosity, do you already have or are you considering getting one of newer R mirrorless cameras and if so, which one would be your top pick?
Thanks Lisa. Been using the R5 and 6. Both amazing but holy smoke they are pricey!
Is that the way you store your lenses? Don’t you get problems with fungi and humidity?
How do you store your lenses then?

How is the battery life shooting 4k Video? I'm debating using mkIV for a 3 hour concert. Any advice?
Honestly I have never recorded 4K for anywhere near that period of time so cannot really answer accurately. Battery life will be an issue though as will the files size and the amount of cards you will burn though. I would say there might be more efficient options out there, possibly for less money but I am not really an expert in this kind of thing so my advice would be to do more research!

Strap easy on/off: Peak Design clip system solves it.
Yes Peak design very easy to attach and remove but the straps can lose grip quickly in my experience.
@@RoyRiley The strap-to-clip connection is the same as the strap's connection to the camera.

I’m more of a rolleng stones kind of guy

Great comment and lots of interesting information here. Thank You! I will look out for the gas mask case! Interesting idea. Best wishes. R

Only works for certain lens sizes. Anything bigger than the 24-70 f/2.8 is right out. With the spacers I'm using, my 12mm/14mm don't fit as well as I'd like. Considering getting some foam to drop in and cutting custom spaces for lenses.
