I know this video is 6 yrs old, but i just found it and I wanna tell ya it was awesome. Been using a T5 for the last 8 yrs, off and on learning, seriously learning the last 2 yrs. I finally upgraded to the 5D MK IV and after being used to the T5 this was gonna be a very hard challenge learning all these old yet new to me features. Your 1 hour video did more for me than I could have done for myself in 6-8 months of self learning. For that I am truly thankful.
This was legitimately one of the most useful and concise videos I have seen on RUclips for the 5D Mark IV. I have recently upgraded and felt as though I understood the mechanics of photography, but this REALLY helped solidify the mechanics of my camera, and helped me to understand how I can get it to work for me. THANK YOU!
I'm on a job with a fellow who has a bag full of great Canon EF lenses, and he said the 5D IV is the best DSLR Canon makes. I found a used one in good shape with a low price and found your video to help me get started. It was a good choice. VERY helpful information. You're a really smart guy! Thanks.
Wow.. best video ever on the EOS-5D mk.IV without any question .. even staff by Canon probably watch it when they forgot something ahah .. from the whole setup to your choice of words, everything is just damn clear & complete .. you just cancelled the need for at least 200 pages of documentation.. and I'm around photography or internet pre-2000 : I've seen a bunch !! The only cons I could spot, as a European non-English native speaker, is that there's no subtitles option, not even automatic (I do not mean you should translate it ahah), and millions of people could benefit from this video. Congrats & Thanks for this jewel !
I found this video to be the most reasonably comprehensive review for 5D mark IV.. I live your videos and whenever I forget something I refer to your videos. Thank you
Hi, just a comment on exposure compensation on M mode: you can also adjust it by pressing the Q button and adjusting the desired compensation, without needing to change to another exposure mode (Av or Tv).
The rate button is really important and saved me a lot of time because my clients can choose the pictures they like on the field, so I can find them much much easier in Lightroom. I found the rate button on my Fuji X-t2 by pressing the Display Back Button which also made me happier.
Just wanna say thank you for such a great tutorial! For 60 minutes, I thought it may be a boring, lengthy video but it turns out very easy and I am not bored at all. I like that you go through the functions as well as share your experience and tips. Thank you again.
Thank you Tony. I purchased said camera recently. This was quite helpful. Also have both your books on Lightroom and Stunning Digital photos. Bought a year ago based on the great reviews on Amazon. Great books. You and Chelsea are doing a fantastic job for us newcomers to the industry.
Hi Tony! Thanks for the overview. It could be worth mentioning that the 5D4 have an inbuilt bulb timer too. So with the mode dial in B, you can go to same menu as interval timer. Tried it out on a 7D mk II and it works very well, just put the shutter on 2s timer to avoid the "initial shake" of hitting and releasing the shutter button.
I am a long time subscriber and watched this long video from beginning to end. I am an amateur but bought a Mark IV, to be delivered tomorrow, so your video is greatly appreciated and well done.
Awesome video. I am an experienced photog. I am very happy with my 5diii but needed to upgrade my 7D (sensor not good in low light) so one of my sons inherited it, and I just purchased the 5d4. This will be a great addition to our business (we always have two shooters at weddings). Thanks for the quick tune-up.
I was expecting a review of this camera before the tutorial. How it does compare to 5DSR or Nikon competition after having filed tested it as you have. This looks like an amazing tutorial for anyone who owns it, by the way. I love your channel, and your not BS way of telling things and comparing camera and gear from a practical viewpoint. Keep it up!
When you talk about the focusing area selection, you describe using the M-fn button to cycle through those different focus area options. However, you don't mention (or maybe I missed it) that there is a new button introduced on the 5D IV that does the same thing. It is the "AF Area Selection Button" that is just below and to the right of the joystick. It's a little easier to find with your thumb than finding the M-fn button with your finger. Either will work, but that new button was added specifically for that purpose (likely due to user feedback requesting an easier way to to AF area selection.)
This is one of the best Tutorial videos that I've come across. The ToC is also very effective and much appreciated. Thank you for putting in the time to produce it and for sharing. Thank you Tony (and Chelsea)!!!
I have owned this camera just over three months, theirs a very steep learning curve in using it, if you are willing to put in the time, the results are stunning. Love this camera, just sad that Canon will longer continue the 5D series. A mark V, would have been a awesome camera, Canon you should reconsider releasing it!
Tony, Just got the Canon 5D Mark IV for Christmas and this video was very helpful for me. Thanks to you and Chelsea for all your help. I've learned so much from the both of you and your books. Much love to you and Chelsea! Hope you have had a great and safe holiday.
Great video. I have had my camera for about a year and learned a few things. Just picked up a Sigma 14-24 2.8 art lens and it compliments the Mark iv well. Love watching your videos when I am trying to get information on a lens or camera!
All I want to say is Thank you, as you tell it the way I like it. Straight to the point. I have the 5D Mark IV and use it for portrait and some sports. It is amazing. I love all your tips as well. I own a great kit, however out of all my lenses (I love them all), I would be heart broken without my Canon 100mm F2.8 Macro. Try it sometime for your portraiture Tony, you may get hooked like me.
thank you! contemplating getting this camera as an update from the 6d mark ii, primarily due to the autofocus issues with that camera. very informative presentation. thanks again!
Awesome video, my 5d Mark IV will be here on Wednesday I purchased the 24-105mm F4 lens, I wish I had the money for the 24-70. I also purchased two of your books I look forward to reading them and becoming a better photographer.
Just bought this Camera as a Christmas gift to myself. I was surprised to hear that GPS doesn't use that much battery on this camera. On my 6D GPS is a huge battery drain. I've not tried GPS on this camera yet, but will be happy if what you say (GPS not being a big battery drain) is true.
I don't know if it's mentioned anywhere else in the comments, but back button focus disables Touch AF. You HAVE to press the AF-ON button (depending on your configuration) to focus. So with BBF enabled, you need to first touch the screen where you want to focus, then press the AF-ON button to actually focus. If you want to use Touch AF then you need to enable start AF on the Shutter button. That's a little annoying since it means jumping back and forth in the custom menus, but you can save three custom setups so maybe that's not really an issue.
I'd like to thank you for providing such well balanced and intelligent content free of charge. I trust your opinions and learn a lot from your material. Payback for you is I bought your book. I don't know how you have so much time to write, shoot, edit and upload so much stuff, let alone get hold of all this kit. **doffs cap**
I know there are some quite obscure menu options I use (wifi, GPS, auto ISO range, battery info etc) but I have found it is really easy to set them into the green custom menu at the end - works really well
You have no idea how many times a pc sync cable saved me. One of the most underrated pieces of equipment when your plan breaks. What, forgot your AAs, and your radio trigger fails in the middle of a large event? pc sync will save you and more impotantly your customers.
Greetings Tony :) I just received my 5D Mark VI and I want to thank you for publishing this informative tutorial that greatly assisted me in my initial setup! I just purchased your book, "How To Create Stunning Digital Photography", and I anticipate learning more under your instruction. Be well Buddy!
Hey Tony, you should've mentioned that people don't need to buy a shutter release cable with the 5d4, because when in bulb mode, in the menu system, you can manually type in the length of time.
You make a good point about leaving the camera in AF Servo all the time, I'm going to give that a try, thanks. I notice you wade through the menus to get to Exposure Compensation. All I do is hit the "Q" button and click the expo/comp in the window. From there I can either shift it up or down or set the bracket. This seems much easier than going on a function hunt. Also are you aware the Canon 24-70mm f4 does have stabilization. It's cheaper as well. I find I can live with the f4 because I'm mostly outside with it anyway.
Liveview uses electronic first curtain shutter which eliminates shutter vibration. Use liveview on a tripod instead of mirror lockup if you want to squeeze alittle extra sharpness out of an image. Also note that entering liveview counts as a shutter actuation so if you constantly go in and out of liveview it will rack up your actuations ;)
Hi Tony, thank you very much for the very clear video. I see a lot more functionality, GPS, WiFi, touch screen, more pixels, etc. on the 5D Mk IV compared to the 5D Mk III, then logically this is more expensive than the 5D Mk III. I have a 5D Mk III, the following is a 5D IV. Thanks again from a viewer from the Netherlands.
Great video, but boy I feed bad for those lenses at left side of the table without proper cover. I am super neurotic with my own lenses and I try to cap lenses in microseconds after switching them to camera body in order to keep dust particles minimized.
Tony, thank you so much for these videos they are really helpful. I also want to thank you for the time line on subjects as that makes it so much easier to search for topics w/o having to watch the entire review again, I appreciate the good work, thanks.
Thanks so much for this video Tony! I really appreciate the breakdown of the settings on the 5D Mark IV. I currently own a 7d Mark II, but as I've switched to portrait photography in the past year, I'm looking to switch over to a full-frame camera so I don't have to back up as much and also the 5D Mark IV is sharper and more detailed. I've already got the 70-200mm f2.8L lens, so when I pair both of those up, I should get some terrific photos. Now I just have to take the plunge to make the purchase.
WONDERFUL i bin looking at you training and i am so blessed. my new camera is a 5Ds coming from a 7D. i learn a lot from you tonight. woooow. thank you i am a Lightroom user too . will look for your book.
Hi Tony, Great instructions! Concerning the wifi connection with iPhone: with Canon Camera Connect app it's very very easy! Also: remote live view shooting, even with face following software!
Tony !Thank You so much for this absolutely great video tutorila , very very helpful. I just bought 5DMark4 and Canon did not put good manual for camera , Thank You!!
Thank you! Just what I needed! I just upgraded to one of these and I am a visual learner, so reading the manual that comes with the camera is not helpful to me.
06:32 - Who deletes pictures *in camera* ?? I couldn't agree more about the *annoying focus beep* ! The first thing I do with a new camera is set it to use raw, turn off the focus beep, turn of the auto chimp playback, and set up back-button-focus. 53:06 - Using the asterisk button for a different focus setup is a great idea. I've read about it, but never set it up. I'll have to give it a try. 58:06 - If only Canon would offer Image Stabilization on the 16-35mm f/2.8!
Thanks so much for this amazing review, but you got it a bit wrong on the manual mode. You can still tap on the ISO icon in the manual mode and change it from AUTO to whatever you want your ISO to be. No need for transferring back to AV mode to do that.. It's a bit easier this way.
Hi guys! I'm happy owner of three of your books and I'm learning a lot, thank you! I'm wondering if you have or planning to do a tutorial video for Canon r6 camera. I thought about upgrading mu old camera to Canon 5D Mark iv but decided to take a step into a mirrorless world and bought Canon r6 with "kit lens" 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM. Thank you so much for your help, you are amazing!
Great Tutorial :) BUT -- What happened to the last 20 minutes of this video? Suddenly it's only 38 minutes long. I'd like to watch the part about "My Menu" at 56:25. Where did that go?
If your tethering with a computer in a studio environment using strobe lights and using Capture One v.10 software, you will not need an SD or CF card inside the 5D Mk IV. You must remove it otherwise the Mk IV & Capture One will conflict with each other on were to store the image. Capture One stores the image directly into your computer and you will not the SD or CF cards inside the camera. I did not have a problem having the CF card inside my old Canon 5D Mk II with Capture One but this was a problem with the Mk IV.
get this or the sony a7III? What I love about canon is the body, I shoot a lot of wildlife and landscape so I am outside a lot and I like the ruggedness and durability of the canon. Whereas with the sony the body seems less rugged and not being able to hold in extreme conditions such as rain.
Question about the Canon low-pass filter and the ability for the Canon 5D Mark IV to set the Lens abberation correction / diffraction correction to cancel the low-pass filter. My question is: how does the low-pass filter work? Is it a physical filter or a software filter? How well does the diffraction correction option work? Does it totally negate the low-pass filter? Should I leave this option on all the time if I am shooting landscape? When should I not use this option? Thanks Bill.
On your 41:02 Video part I was wondering why when I went to the menu button camera icon page 4 it looked different than what your video showed. Than I realized that to see those options I had to be in live view first. LOL
How did you get the back screen to automatically show ISO or auto-focus points, etc.? I can do it by pushing info button twice, then the on-screen Q button, but it doesn't happen automatically like you did. Great tutorial!
Hey Tony, I'd recommend you take a look at the Hahnel Extreme LP-E6 batteries.. Been using them in my 5D bodies for quite a while. Not a cheap option, but superior to orig.
Just further to that.... They also have a charger which will charge 2 batteries at the same time. When the second battery is in, it only takes 50% longer to charge
Holy this made me cringe sooo much lol. Especially when he is going through the different modes and trying to press the touch screen. I don't even own this camera its just basic canon fundamentals isn't it?
Great video. Thanks. But I noticed your lcd turns on when you hit ANY button. Mine is new out of the box and I hit let’s say the iso button I need to use the top screen to see the settings. The lcd is not on at that point
At around the 27 Minute mark you talk about AF Cases and say "by default they provide three different cases," then you say if any of those three cases don't meet your needs, you can scroll down even further and specifically configure Tracking Sensitivity, Accel./decel. tracking and AF pt auto switching." In point of fact there are 6 default cases, Case 1 through 6, all of which you can tweak those three settings.

If this guy was one of my tutors when I was at school I'd be a hell of a lot brighter than I am now, so clear and precise. Thank you.
Holy cow! I thought my eyesights been going for a half a year. It was the diopter! Lol I’m so glad I watched this thank you tony!
Glad to help!
I found this video to be the most reasonably comprehensive review for 5D mark IV..
I live your videos and whenever I forget something I refer to your videos.
Thank you
Thank you for this. I just received the camera as a gift and have no clue to to work it. This REALLY helped me before a photo session.
Great video. I just purchased the 5D IV and there is not a better tutorial than this one! Thanks for all the very useful information.
Hi, just a comment on exposure compensation on M mode: you can also adjust it by pressing the Q button and adjusting the desired compensation, without needing to change to another exposure mode (Av or Tv).

I hate videos longer then 15mins because i get bored. But for some reason you guys keep me interested the whole 1hr!!!! Keep it up great videos!
I am a long time subscriber and watched this long video from beginning to end. I am an amateur but bought a Mark IV, to be delivered tomorrow, so your video is greatly appreciated and well done.
Awesome video. I am an experienced photog. I am very happy with my 5diii but needed to upgrade my 7D (sensor not good in low light) so one of my sons inherited it, and I just purchased the 5d4. just standing for one hour to help with this its a great gesture. I am in the process of buying one of these cameras and this was very helpfull

I purchased a 5D MK IV for my Drone Photography business..excellent video to get me pointed in the right direction.
Great video. I have had my camera for about a year and learned a few things. Just picked up a Sigma 14-24 2.8 art lens and it compliments the Mark iv well. Love watching your videos when I am trying to get information on a lens or camera!
Thank you. I just got this camera and needed to know how to set the BBF as I had on my 7D mark II, but I listened to everything. Great information!!
Thanks for such a complete tutorial on this Canon 5D Mk4 camera! Really helpful and I appreciate your calm, patient and sometimes humorous delivery.
All I want to say is Thank you, as you tell it the way I like it. Straight to the point. I have the 5D Mark IV and use it for portrait and some sports. It is amazing. I love all your tips as well. The only proper done review on youtube for this camera. Thanks
At 13:55 you say you can't touch the screen to change aperture, you can, you just need to press the Q button first.

I just purchased your book, "How To Create Stunning Digital Photography", and I anticipate learning more under your instruction. Be well Buddy!
Thanks! Enjoy!
I’ll be using it with my Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro lens. I do food photography. Thanks for your video, it is still relevant in 2024.
Tony, I know this is a year old, but just ordered my Mk IV... very helpful. thank you.
Just now saw this video and had my mind blown with the auto focus custom setup. Great video!
Hey Tony, you should've mentioned that people don't need to buy a shutter release cable with the 5d4, because when in bulb mode, in the menu system, you can manually type in the length of time.
Hi Tony, thanks very much for another great tutorial. Will you be doing a full review of the 5D mk4?
Your books are superb! Mine are.... 5+ years old so an update is in order, especially that which explains Lightroom.
Thanks Tony, I am just upgrading to the canon 5d iv from a canon 750d. Looking forward to the change and your video is a great help. Thanks!
You make a good point about leaving the camera in AF Servo all the time, I'm going to give that a try, thanks.

Thanks and you're welcome!
WONDERFUL i bin looking at you training and i am so blessed. my new camera is a 5Ds coming from a 7D. i learn a lot from you tonight. woooow. thank you i am a Lightroom user too . will look for your book.
What most people (including the presenter) don't know: This camera has an inbuilt bulb timer. You can find it in camera menu tab 4. And also a timer.
Thanks Tony! Very educational video but made easy by your easy to understand explanations.
When you hit "Q" you actually CAN use the touch screen.
Tony I just bought a 5dMark4 and I appreciate this video. You are appreciated :)
Best explanation video I have ever seen. Just sat trhough the whole damn thing. Thanks! Subbed.
Hi Tony,
Great instructions!
Thank you so much for this thorough and in-depth tutorial. It really helps a lot.
Thank you! Just what I needed! I just upgraded to one of these and I am a visual learner, so reading the manual that comes with the camera is not helpful to me.
Super helpful, thank you. Canon should put a copy of this with the camera.
Thanks for taking the time for this thorough tutorial.
Thank you for this very usefull instructions. In particular, I was very happy to learn how to make the settings for focus with the back-buttons.
Brilliant Info on the Canon5d
Thanks Tony, great video very well presented.
Not much new information for me but I did learn 2 or 3 things.
Keep it up.
Thanks so much for this amazing review, but you got it a bit wrong on the manual mode. You can still tap on the ISO icon in the manual mode and change it from AUTO to whatever you want your ISO to be. No need for transferring back to AV mode to do that.. It's a bit easier this way.
Thankyou Tony, this video is just what i wanted i now know how to use my Mk4 i changed over from Nikon and was having trouble but all is great now
Love the way you simplify everything.
thank you, great information. just about sold on this camera, Been shooting 5D SR, i need more ISO for indoor sports . thanks, subscribed !!
Great Tutorial :) BUT -- What happened to the last 20 minutes of this video? Suddenly it's only 38 minutes long. I'd like to watch the part about "My Menu" at 56:25. Where did that go?
13:57 you have to touch the Q button before you’re able to change quick menu settings with the touch screen. Even I know that!
Why switch to Av or Tv to do exposure compensation in manual mode when you can customise the button to the right of the Q button to do it?.
Thanks a lot Tony! it is very helpful. now i can easily lead my E-learning project in depth! once more thanks
You can change exposure compensation in manual mode by hitting Q button
get this or the sony a7III?
Still a great presentation and resource! Thank you!
On your 41:02 Video part I was wondering why when I went to the menu button camera icon page 4 it looked different than what your video showed. Than I realized that to see those options I had to be in live view first. LOL
Great job Tony as usual. Santa will be delivering one of these in my hands pretty soon! can´t wait to use it!
Did you know you can hit the Q button while navigating the menu?
Holy this made me cringe sooo much lol. Especially when he is going through the different modes and trying to press the touch screen. I don't even own this camera its just basic canon fundamentals isn't it?
I use AE lock quite often. Most of the time handheld. It works well as a "I am happy now so stop metering damnit"-button. :D
This was great thank you!!! I watch the whole thing!!!
Thank you so much for this. I can’t describe how helpful this was to me!
Thanks lot of your sound advice
Tony with your book stunning digital photography, do you go into detail on night photography, landscape photography, etc.?
Yep
Absolutely excellent, just what I needed. Thank you. Luv all your videos by the way, well done
