Canon’s 5D Mark IV has a great auto-focus system, although it can seem a little complex at first. In this video, find out how to set up the cameras controls and interface to make Ai Servo operation quick, easy and effective
One more user here to thank you for this video, 5 years later!

Hey Grant, this was brillent. Thank you for explaining everything so simply.
Very useful indeed. Thank you. Just bought one and needed a well presented and straightforward demonstration of the setup for wildlife photography. Subscribed.
Grant, thank you for the level of detail and explanation you provide in your videos. I have used them in all the Canon cameras have used.
Glad it was helpful Mike :-)
Well done lots of help I might even try your method but I’m youtube taught back button focus over 3 years the conversion now may cause me too mess up to many shots thanks so far
Absolutely critical information/instruction for me, total amateur with a new fancy camera. You help me take advantage of some of the many features available on it. I can see that your selection of information is driven by real field experience. Thank You.
Very very helpful series I’ve been disappointed with my autofocus until now and was expecting much more from it than the mkii have made some adjustments with your info and looking forward to testing out further, thank you for taking the time for the tutorial!!
Hi Grant, Thanks for another useful video. It's very clear and informative.
There is so much one can do with the custom menus in setting up a camera for one's own personal preference, and it can be a minefield to understand what is useful and why. Therefore being able to get your view on how you set your camera for your wildlife photography is a very useful insight. That tip on setting up the multi controller button and the smaller button below it to instantly control access to focusing points and groupings is very valuable.
Great images at the start of the video too!
Look forward to more of these great videos.
Dave
Hi Grant, Once again thank you very much for the help, I have sorted the small problem with your help. Have a great weekend.
Wow! Finally, I understand focusing. I’ve watched a ton of videos and yours are the best, thanks very much!
This video is so helpful, thankyou so much for explaining all these features so clearly.
First video I've seen of yours and you have a very thorough way of explaining these hard to grasp controls in a very informative and digestible way without overwhelming amounts of info. Subscribed. Thank you Grant
I appreciate that very much!
GRANT! MY SAVIOUR! Two years later and this video is still very helpful, well done and thank you for your video's dude!

Really informative on the auto focus front and how to manage it efficiently on the 5DM4. Appreciate it
You just saved me! Recently purchased a new to me 5D, and while messing around with setting it up, my focusing squares disappeared in my viewfinder..
Been looking for days, with no luck. Your video helped me set my camera, and got my squares back too! Thank you!
glad it was helpful!
So generous of you to share such valuable knowledge!
Thanks for your time
Fantastic video! New 5D user in 2021 and your parts 1-4 are the best videos available for understanding how to use the controls and which settings to make. Thanks!

Thank you so much for this, Grant! I’m no wildlife photographer, but I was having trouble understanding the autofocus on this camera and you cleared things right up!
Megan Bell thanks for letting me know and for sure, whilst I only take wildlife photos, some aspects of the autofocus have broad applications, and I am very glad it was helpful.

I'm the opposite of a "wildlife" shooter. I do advertising work, so I never follow the action - I'm generally tasked with determining the action. But this tutorial is so useful! This is stuff my assistants may know, but I surely don't. Thanks so much!
Great video! Very helpful to setup my new 5d mark iv. You are so Great!!!

More full of useful information than videos from other photographers. I'm a fan, Grant. Now I'm getting used to the 5D IV and 1DX II, and your tutorials are my starting points. I'm very grateful.

Yes, I had my camera right in my hands as I was watching. Great instructor Grant. You are one of the best I have seen. Do you have any videos on shooting boxing or other sports?
No, nothing like that I am afraid....sorry.
Thanks for the instruction! I learned something new!
Glad it was useful
Thank you so much! You made me feel comfortable and knowledgeable after view this video.
That is good to hear
Fantastic explanation - clear and concise...
Hi Grant - I'm so pleased to have found your videos. I've just upgraded from 5D3 to 5D4 and these videos would have made the decision a lot easier! Your presentations are superbly clear and understandable and now I have a good understanding of the AF system and how to best set it up, particularly single button presses rather than the default button+wheel. I also use shutter button focus, and like you I am left eye dominant so it's useful to see that all those buttons are still usable with your left eye to the camera (and nose over the screen). As I also have an 80D many of the same considerations apply. A question about your Gimpro gimbal - when do you use it in full gimbal, or in sidekick mode?
Great information - I normally use servo with back-button focus. This allows me to "focus and recompose" by focusing, then letting go of the BBF button. I thought that there was no other way to have servo & bbf co-exist, but I hadn't considered the AF-off possibility. I'll try it.
Both methods can be effective, it just depends on one personal preferences, as well as the size and shape of users hands :-)
Thanks for the Video. Helped me a lot
Love your setup thanks
Great tutorial. And really helpful!

Thank you!! Just got my 5D today :)
Good to hear. It is a great full-frame, all-rounder and hope it does the job you need :-)
Thank you for the tip about the custom controls where you can switch between one shot and servo mode. It might be worth mentioning that you have to press the info button in that specific menu to make the camera keep the setting once you let go of the * button. I tried this out and was wondering why it always switched back when I let go of the button.
Hi Sebastian, once I chose that "Ai Servo-One Shot" option from the Custom Controls menu, for the Star button, I pressed Set to confirm my choice. After that I only need to press the Star * button once, for it to change to Ai Servo or One Shot, for good - no other button presses needed. Is your camera different or am I misunderstanding your query? :-)
You can decide which behaviour you want. When you are assigning the one shot servo function to the * button, pressing info lets you choose between switching between them until the button is pressed again (toggle), or only switching while it is held in. Personally I prefer to toggle. Also, I never use the depth of field preview button for preview: you can customise this in the same way, which is what I do on my 5DIV, so that I still have * for exposure hold in the rare cases I want this. The great thing about toggling focus mode with the depth of field preview button is that you always have it under the third finger of the right hand, which I find even easier than using a button on the back of the camera.
As to the new button on the back, I do not find it very useful for selecting the focus point layout, because it only cycles through the options in one direction: to change the focus point pattern, I prefer to use the back button on the right and use the wheel to move the layout in whichever direction I want immediately. Personally I use the new button for exposure compensation, to make it very quick to add exposure compensation when shooting in manual mode with auto ISO (which is my generally preferred way of shooting wildlife). Each to their own, and I certainly do not meant to criticise Grant's choices just because they are not quite the same as mine. Look forward to the remaining videos in the series.
Thanks for explaining those other settings clearly in your response above, and yes, there are many more options for those buttons and controls, but for sure you can find useful ways that suit your own preference and style... :-).
Thank you Grant for all the great tips and advise. Thank You also Sebastion, I ran across the same problem. You are correct, allow me to elaborate. You do have to press "info" which will take you to the next screen. From that screen you have 2 selections to choose from. The first is an arrow with a line underneath that states "switch only when btn is held." The second is "Hold" and it states "switch each time btn is pressed." It is here where you select the action you want . It is self explanatory. In option one when you depress the button, it will select the other setting. Once you let go of the button it will return to the original setting. In option two you have to depress the button to select the other setting. That selection will remain until you depress the button once again. It is from this screen that you select "OK."
thank you - I was having the same problem till I saw this thread - pressing the info button is important if you want your selection to HOLD
Very good videos!.
thanks! awesome video
Hi Grant. Thank you for sharing all of your knowledge! Can you please tell me what make and model that L shaped bracket / mount is that sits on your tripod?
Amazing, thanks a lot!
Just bought a 5DM4 and couldn't be happier with my first shoot today. Your videos are highly informative and helpful for me to learn this beast. Question: I find using the touchscreen is way faster for navigating the menus than scrolling. Any reason you don't use touch screen in your videos? Is it just to not obscure the screen from the viewer? Thanks.
The touchscreen can be the quickest way to navigate but as you point out, it is hard to use it without blocking the video capture...no other reason...and I kind of feel that so long as someone has a clear idea of what a setting does, how you get there is up to the user. On the 5Dmk4 there are usually multiple ways to change settings :-)
