You just saved me! Recently purchased a new to me 5D, and while messing around with setting it up, my focusing squares disappeared in my viewfinder.. Been looking for days, with no luck. Your video helped me set my camera, and got my squares back too! Thank you!
Fantastic video! New 5D user in 2021 and your parts 1-4 are the best videos available for understanding how to use the controls and which settings to make. Thanks!
First video I've seen of yours and you have a very thorough way of explaining these hard to grasp controls in a very informative and digestible way without overwhelming amounts of info. Subscribed. Thank you Grant
Thank you so much for this, Grant! I’m no wildlife photographer, but I was having trouble understanding the autofocus on this camera and you cleared things right up!
Megan Bell thanks for letting me know and for sure, whilst I only take wildlife photos, some aspects of the autofocus have broad applications, and I am very glad it was helpful.
Absolutely critical information/instruction for me, total amateur with a new fancy camera. You help me take advantage of some of the many features available on it. I can see that your selection of information is driven by real field experience. Thank You.
Very useful indeed. Thank you. Just bought one and needed a well presented and straightforward demonstration of the setup for wildlife photography. Subscribed.
AMAZING !! just upgraded to this camera and shot a wedding with it..lost some shots because i couldn't focus and recompose my pic without loosing my focal point to the autofocus constantly kicking in... been looking for the right information how to correct this before my next shoot.. my search is over thanks to this vid..thank you so much for that...nice job.
Very very helpful series I’ve been disappointed with my autofocus until now and was expecting much more from it than the mkii have made some adjustments with your info and looking forward to testing out further, thank you for taking the time for the tutorial!!
More full of useful information than videos from other photographers. I'm a fan, Grant. Now I'm getting used to the 5D IV and 1DX II, and your tutorials are my starting points. I'm very grateful.
Best video I found explaining the auto focus features. Thanks for your detailed explanation. I am going on a Safari next week and this will be hugely helpful to get some good shots.
Great tutorial. Thanks for the easy explanations. ... looking through your other vids now to help me set up new 5DS (which I’m a little overwhelmed with). Thanks again.
Mr. Atkinson - thanks so much for this - you've saved me quite a bit of fumbling around time and given me some great ideas. I really appreciate your help! I'm headed to SA to photograph in Kruger this coming week and again in March and these tips will really help!
Yes, I had my camera right in my hands as I was watching. Great instructor Grant. You are one of the best I have seen. Do you have any videos on shooting boxing or other sports?
I'm the opposite of a "wildlife" shooter. I do advertising work, so I never follow the action - I'm generally tasked with determining the action. But this tutorial is so useful! This is stuff my assistants may know, but I surely don't. Thanks so much!
Great information - I normally use servo with back-button focus. This allows me to "focus and recompose" by focusing, then letting go of the BBF button. I thought that there was no other way to have servo & bbf co-exist, but I hadn't considered the AF-off possibility. I'll try it.
Hi Grant. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. What a help Could you please give a video on your settings you use when you are taking video with the canon 5D mark 4
Question about setting up the button to go easily from one shot to servo...after set up I press it and it changes to one or the other, but I have to keep holding down the button to keep it on servo. Is that how you use it? I love being able to change it so easily, but it seems like it would be a pain to have to keep your finger on that button the whole time. I guess it would be fine for very spontaneous shooting of possibly rapidly changing situations, but if you were only going to shoot a sporting or wildlife event, you would go into the actual menu to set it? Also, I came here to get some tips about focusing for sports, as I was shooting some sword fighting and was having focusing issues. I'm assuming most of your tips would work with sports, too, no? Also, excellent tutorials, thank you very much.
It is possible to have the camera stay in Ai Servo or One Shot. I omitted to show the optional step in the video. Whilst you have the orange field highlighting the box with ONE SHOT - SERVO then press the INFO button beside your viewfinder on the back of your camera. That will enable a further screen which allows you to choose between SWITCH and HOLD, if you choose Hold you can make it stay all the time. Sorry I didn't include that in the video. Quite a few sports offer similar challenges to the autofocus that I encounter as a wildlife photographer, so I think that having an idea of what the different autofocus parameters affect, will help you to make your 5Dmk4 work better for you?
Hi Grant, Thanks for another useful video. It's very clear and informative. There is so much one can do with the custom menus in setting up a camera for one's own personal preference, and it can be a minefield to understand what is useful and why. Therefore being able to get your view on how you set your camera for your wildlife photography is a very useful insight. That tip on setting up the multi controller button and the smaller button below it to instantly control access to focusing points and groupings is very valuable. Great images at the start of the video too! Look forward to more of these great videos. Dave
Well done lots of help I might even try your method but I’m youtube taught back button focus over 3 years the conversion now may cause me too mess up to many shots thanks so far
Thank you for the tip about the custom controls where you can switch between one shot and servo mode. It might be worth mentioning that you have to press the info button in that specific menu to make the camera keep the setting once you let go of the * button. I tried this out and was wondering why it always switched back when I let go of the button.
Hi Sebastian, once I chose that "Ai Servo-One Shot" option from the Custom Controls menu, for the Star button, I pressed Set to confirm my choice. After that I only need to press the Star * button once, for it to change to Ai Servo or One Shot, for good - no other button presses needed. Is your camera different or am I misunderstanding your query? :-)
You can decide which behaviour you want. When you are assigning the one shot servo function to the * button, pressing info lets you choose between switching between them until the button is pressed again (toggle), or only switching while it is held in. Personally I prefer to toggle. Also, I never use the depth of field preview button for preview: you can customise this in the same way, which is what I do on my 5DIV, so that I still have * for exposure hold in the rare cases I want this. The great thing about toggling focus mode with the depth of field preview button is that you always have it under the third finger of the right hand, which I find even easier than using a button on the back of the camera. As to the new button on the back, I do not find it very useful for selecting the focus point layout, because it only cycles through the options in one direction: to change the focus point pattern, I prefer to use the back button on the right and use the wheel to move the layout in whichever direction I want immediately. Personally I use the new button for exposure compensation, to make it very quick to add exposure compensation when shooting in manual mode with auto ISO (which is my generally preferred way of shooting wildlife). Each to their own, and I certainly do not meant to criticise Grant's choices just because they are not quite the same as mine. Look forward to the remaining videos in the series.
Thanks for explaining those other settings clearly in your response above, and yes, there are many more options for those buttons and controls, but for sure you can find useful ways that suit your own preference and style... :-).
Thank you Grant for all the great tips and advise. Thank You also Sebastion, I ran across the same problem. You are correct, allow me to elaborate. You do have to press "info" which will take you to the next screen. From that screen you have 2 selections to choose from. The first is an arrow with a line underneath that states "switch only when btn is held." The second is "Hold" and it states "switch each time btn is pressed." It is here where you select the action you want . It is self explanatory. In option one when you depress the button, it will select the other setting. Once you let go of the button it will return to the original setting. In option two you have to depress the button to select the other setting. That selection will remain until you depress the button once again. It is from this screen that you select "OK."
Ive assigned the STAR to One Shot / AI Servo. I noticed in this video that you are able to press this button once to toggle between the two modes - without having to keep your finger on the button. I can't seem to be able to do this ? I have to keep my finger on the button to switch modes. How did you set yours up to do this ?
Hi Paul, on your 5D Mark 4, go to the screen in the Orange menu Custom Controls, and then with the Star icon selected, press SET. Then move the orange cursor till One Shot-Servo is highlighted. Now press the INFO button to get a second screen up that gives you the option of making this choice between only active whilst pressed or to Hold which is the one i chose.
Hello Grant, first off, thanks a lot for your videos, they are easy to follow and helpful. When I customized the star button to switch between one shot and AI servo I realize that I have to keep it pressed to do so, unlike your camera where you seem to press once and changes back and forth. Any idea why this could be happening? Thanks a lot
Hi Eduardo, so when you have the Custom Controls menu starting point, and you have gone into the position on the graphic that is represents the Star button, when you have the box highlighted that says ONE SHOT -SERVO , you need to press the INFO button on the top left back of the camera and it will take you to another option screen where you can make the switch permanent HOLD or have it only active whilst you press the button. Choosing HOLD will make it permanent. I ought to have included that in the video..sorry about that, hope you get it figured out now.
Good info just recently bought the mk4 and been shooting back button focus, AI servo. In AI servo and continuously shooting with subjects moving towards/away from you, I'm assuming you can't really compose a shot, for instance using a single focus point. But instead should use a larger focus zone?
Hi Justin Schoonover, I don't use back button focus except in rare instances..but using it can create a bit of a break in your focusing effort if you need to switch the active AF point as you need to let go of the back button in order to select a different focus point. For my own shooting this can happen often when a wild subject is approaching and beginning to fill more of the frame. I may start with the centre point then switch midway through the subject approach to the top focus point so that i can avoid cutting off legs and feet. In such instances focusing on the shutter is more effective for me as my thumb is free to move the focus point whilst i shoot. If you wish to stay in back button focus in such instances either you accept that you miss a few frames whilst you change the active AF point, or you can use a larger group but that is no guarantee that it will grab onto the part of the subject that is important to you. Personal preferences come into play here :-)
I loved the video, congratulations, I would love to know the model of the tripod head that used in this video in which the camera supports, and if possible, where do I buy it?
