    Hi! Thank you so much for this video, it clarified so much for me, due to the fact that I shoot for over 30 years with Nikon's and I have to shoot now with a Canon 5D Mark IV!
    One thing in your set up seems not to work on the camera I have in my hands: the star button (at 8:36) I selected the same set up as you did, but pressing the star button does though toggle between one shot and AI Servo but does not stay that way! Meaning when I let go the star button it goes back to whatever I have selected before... If I keep pressing the star button it keeps the change, but looking at your video, you press once, it changes, you press again, it changes back, right? What am I possibly doing wrong?
    Customising the multicontroller joystick is a BLESSING! Thank you so much👏🏻

    • @grantatkinson8108
      @grantatkinson8108  3 года назад +1

      For the toggle between One Shot and Ai Servo, I think just press the INFO button when you are in that screen, and it should bring up one more level where you can choose to have it switch between Servo and One Shot only while you press it or have it change permanently. I don't have my 5DMk4 with me right now unfortunately so I am working from memory here.

      @@grantatkinson8108 you ARE my star: that was exactly it! Thank you so much 🙏🏻
      One question remains after watching all 4 episodes on the 5D and its AF features: if I set an AF point on the right side in the viewfinder and my object moves across to the left, will the AF point track the object and follow it? I know this feature from my D850 which is called 3D tracking... it literally sticks to the object where ever it is in the viewfinder!
      Thanks 🙏🏻

    • @grantatkinson8108
      @grantatkinson8108  3 года назад +1

      @@neglectedloves in Canon it is called iTR (Intelligent Tracking). For the focus point grouping, you select the Auto 61 point focus point grouping option. Then you turn on iTR in the purple AF menu. Its called Auto AF Pt Select : EOS iTR AF. You can choose to Disable it or Enable for any subject or Enable for Faces - the symbol with two eyes and a smile. Next menu item is also in the purple AF menu, its called "Initial AF Pt - Ai Servo AF", here the three menu options let you choose if the iTR starts with your own, previously selected AF point or if it finds its own subject. I do not find that iTR automatic tracking was effective for my wildlife subjects, but it could well work just fine, depending upon your subjects. In my experience it was a little less reliable at finding the right subject than 3D Tracking on a D850.

    • @neglectedloves
      @neglectedloves 3 года назад

      @@grantatkinson8108 thank so much again for elaborating! That clarified everything. I could test all your infos on my today's shoot: I must say selecting all AF points and leave it up to face detection is only 70% reliable, especially due to the fact that 61 points are literally a third of the D850 points but since it's always a group of focus points the results were quite ok! I will try next to use starting AF point. But for all methods all borders of the view finder cannot be used which leaves you with crop ratio.
      Apparently mirrorless cameras use way more of the area.
      All in all your videos were immensely helpful!!!
      Thanks again!
      PS: another really weird thing in the 5D menu: there's no way to save my settings onto a CF card to apply on a factory resetted camera. Other Canon models have this feature!

    Question about setting up the button to go easily from one shot to servo...after set up I press it and it changes to one or the other, but I have to keep holding down the button to keep it on servo. Is that how you use it? I love being able to change it so easily, but it seems like it would be a pain to have to keep your finger on that button the whole time. I guess it would be fine for very spontaneous shooting of possibly rapidly changing situations, but if you were only going to shoot a sporting or wildlife event, you would go into the actual menu to set it?
    Also, I came here to get some tips about focusing for sports, as I was shooting some sword fighting and was having focusing issues. I'm assuming most of your tips would work with sports, too, no?
    Also, excellent tutorials, thank you very much.

      It is possible to have the camera stay in Ai Servo or One Shot. I omitted to show the optional step in the video. Whilst you have the orange field highlighting the box with ONE SHOT - SERVO then press the INFO button beside your viewfinder on the back of your camera. That will enable a further screen which allows you to choose between SWITCH and HOLD, if you choose Hold you can make it stay all the time. Sorry I didn't include that in the video. Quite a few sports offer similar challenges to the autofocus that I encounter as a wildlife photographer, so I think that having an idea of what the different autofocus parameters affect, will help you to make your 5Dmk4 work better for you?

      Hi Eduardo, so when you have the Custom Controls menu starting point, and you have gone into the position on the graphic that is represents the Star button, when you have the box highlighted that says ONE SHOT -SERVO , you need to press the INFO button on the top left back of the camera and it will take you to another option screen where you can make the switch permanent HOLD or have it only active whilst you press the button. Choosing HOLD will make it permanent. I ought to have included that in the video..sorry about that, hope you get it figured out now.

    Thank you for the tip about the custom controls where you can switch between one shot and servo mode. It might be worth mentioning that you have to press the info button in that specific menu to make the camera keep the setting once you let go of the * button. I tried this out and was wondering why it always switched back when I let go of the button.

      Hi Sebastian, once I chose that "Ai Servo-One Shot" option from the Custom Controls menu, for the Star button, I pressed Set to confirm my choice. After that I only need to press the Star * button once, for it to change to Ai Servo or One Shot, for good - no other button presses needed. Is your camera different or am I misunderstanding your query? :-)

    • @notdisclosed9745
      @notdisclosed9745 7 лет назад +2

      You can decide which behaviour you want. When you are assigning the one shot servo function to the * button, pressing info lets you choose between switching between them until the button is pressed again (toggle), or only switching while it is held in. Personally I prefer to toggle. Also, I never use the depth of field preview button for preview: you can customise this in the same way, which is what I do on my 5DIV, so that I still have * for exposure hold in the rare cases I want this. The great thing about toggling focus mode with the depth of field preview button is that you always have it under the third finger of the right hand, which I find even easier than using a button on the back of the camera.
      As to the new button on the back, I do not find it very useful for selecting the focus point layout, because it only cycles through the options in one direction: to change the focus point pattern, I prefer to use the back button on the right and use the wheel to move the layout in whichever direction I want immediately. Personally I use the new button for exposure compensation, to make it very quick to add exposure compensation when shooting in manual mode with auto ISO (which is my generally preferred way of shooting wildlife). Each to their own, and I certainly do not meant to criticise Grant's choices just because they are not quite the same as mine. Look forward to the remaining videos in the series.

      Thank you Grant for all the great tips and advise. Thank You also Sebastion, I ran across the same problem. You are correct, allow me to elaborate. You do have to press "info" which will take you to the next screen. From that screen you have 2 selections to choose from. The first is an arrow with a line underneath that states "switch only when btn is held." The second is "Hold" and it states "switch each time btn is pressed." It is here where you select the action you want . It is self explanatory. In option one when you depress the button, it will select the other setting. Once you let go of the button it will return to the original setting. In option two you have to depress the button to select the other setting. That selection will remain until you depress the button once again. It is from this screen that you select "OK."

    Good info just recently bought the mk4 and been shooting back button focus, AI servo. In AI servo and continuously shooting with subjects moving towards/away from you, I'm assuming you can't really compose a shot, for instance using a single focus point. But instead should use a larger focus zone?

    • @grantatkinson8108
      @grantatkinson8108  7 лет назад

      Hi Justin Schoonover, I don't use back button focus except in rare instances..but using it can create a bit of a break in your focusing effort if you need to switch the active AF point as you need to let go of the back button in order to select a different focus point. For my own shooting this can happen often when a wild subject is approaching and beginning to fill more of the frame. I may start with the centre point then switch midway through the subject approach to the top focus point so that i can avoid cutting off legs and feet. In such instances focusing on the shutter is more effective for me as my thumb is free to move the focus point whilst i shoot. If you wish to stay in back button focus in such instances either you accept that you miss a few frames whilst you change the active AF point, or you can use a larger group but that is no guarantee that it will grab onto the part of the subject that is important to you. Personal preferences come into play here :-)

    I've just upgraded from my Canon EOS 70D to the 5D Mk4. I've spent 2 days looking for good RUclips AF tutorials and yours is best - at last, something logically set out, comprehensive and clear - thanks so much!!! One thing:
    On my Autofocus Menu 4, inside the "Select AF area selec. mode" option, the second choice single spot focus has lost its surrounding box and I can therefore neither tick it or untick it. Thus on the AF Menu 4 page, on the line "Select AF area selec. mode", I see just a hyphen mark, not a tick (or whatever should be there ...). How do I reactivate that box?

    • @grantatkinson8108
      @grantatkinson8108  7 лет назад

      Hi Jeremy, glad the video is useful. With regard to your choice of AF mode options, I think that if i got you correctly, you are referring to the second choice which is Single Pt AF. You can not check it or uncheck it because it is the default option...so you always have to include it in your list of choices. That works for me because i like using it..but may be different for you, but it remains a constant option :-)

    • @jeremyturner76745
      @jeremyturner76745 7 лет назад

      Ok thanks, understood. But on another video, I saw that on the line "Select AF area selec. mode", there was a tick (or maybe "YES", I can't remember) but I have just a hyphen mark. Maybe it doesn't matter, though seems odd?

    • @jeremyturner76745
      @jeremyturner76745 7 лет назад +1

      And I should add: yes, I use the Single Pt AF, and also that I haven't lost it as one of the AF options. But why the hyphen?

    • @grantatkinson8108
      @grantatkinson8108  7 лет назад

      Hi Jeremy, if you have all six options checked, then there is a hyphen showing on the AF4 screen, opposite "Select AF Area Selec. Mode"
      Just as soon as you uncheck one or more of the AF modes then the hyphen changes to a 'Checkmark", i guess to indicate from the AF4 menu that you have made changes to that menu...

    Hi Grant, Thanks for another useful video. It's very clear and informative.
    There is so much one can do with the custom menus in setting up a camera for one's own personal preference, and it can be a minefield to understand what is useful and why. Therefore being able to get your view on how you set your camera for your wildlife photography is a very useful insight. That tip on setting up the multi controller button and the smaller button below it to instantly control access to focusing points and groupings is very valuable.
    Great images at the start of the video too!
    Look forward to more of these great videos.

    With static subjects, do you personally still use AI servo incase you yourself moves? Have you tested that vs one shot?

    • @grantatkinson8108
      @grantatkinson8108  7 лет назад

      i still use Ai Servo for static subjects, I am happy that it works well enough for me, and as you say, Ai Servo actually helps compensate for my own motion, specially with tele lenses. When it is extremely dark though, not really when i am photographing wildlife, then One Shot is more accurate than Ai Servo, for static subjects

    • @nagol5178
      @nagol5178 7 лет назад +1

      How do you find the DPAF on static subjects? Such as a person? I have the 5D Mark IV but have not tested it to see if the face detection causes it to focus on their eyes or if it hits their nose. I am new to tracking, I am mostly a landscaper, my previous camera only had one cross type point so I didn't attempt tracking things. I have it in one shot with single focus point but I have it set where if I hold down the AF on button clusters come around the AF point, it turns to servo, and chases the scenario, when I let it go the cluster goes away, the servo goes back to one shot, etc. Have the star button set to Zone and Af on is the Af point with a few around it. Have you tried letting the camera track it across the frame in the 61 point auto?

    • @grantatkinson8108
      @grantatkinson8108  7 лет назад +1

      For the kind of tracking that you mention where one allows the camera to choose the focus point and follow the subject across the frame, in Ai Servo, and using the viewfinder to focus, I find it accurate and reliable for subjects that move slowly and predictably. I also find it works great when the subject has nothing but a clear surrounding on all sides, like an aircraft in the sky. But as I photograph a lot of subjects that move quite fast, with a lot of unpredictability to their direction, and also sometimes at close range to me, I find that the 65 point tracking does not always keep up with the speed or sometimes grabs a part of the subject less important to me. So i get a better success rate using AF Expansion (one pt plus 4 helpers) or Single Pt, or AF Exanded Surround (8 plus 1) and I try to keep that group of points on the moving subject myself. Some of those options are covered in next weeks 5D mk4 video

      Hi Grant,
      I am new to the mark IV and have found your videos to be very helpful. Thank you so much. I have one question. I have set the star button as you showed to go between al servo and one shot. However I have keep my thumb on the star button to use one shot. If I take it off as you were able to do, it goes straight back to al servo. Have I done something wrong in the set up. I can use it like that, but would prefer to not to gave to keep pressing . Can you help? By tge way I am off to the Serengeti again in a few weeks to see the migration. Can't wait. Any tips for shooting the crossings would be greatly appreciated. Regards Pauline P.

When I take finger off button it goes back to the other shooting mode. How did you set this up so that you only need to hit the button once to toggle on/off the two modes? Many thanks

    Just bought a 5DM4 and couldn't be happier with my first shoot today. Your videos are highly informative and helpful for me to learn this beast. Question: I find using the touchscreen is way faster for navigating the menus than scrolling. Any reason you don't use touch screen in your videos? Is it just to not obscure the screen from the viewer? Thanks.

    • @grantatkinson8108
      @grantatkinson8108  6 лет назад

      The touchscreen can be the quickest way to navigate but as you point out, it is hard to use it without blocking the video capture...no other reason...and I kind of feel that so long as someone has a clear idea of what a setting does, how you get there is up to the user. On the 5Dmk4 there are usually multiple ways to change settings :-)

    Grant I have set the * button as suggested to One Shot: Servo. While shooting in One Shot I can only change to Servo while keeping the * button depressed. Once I release it, it goes back to One Shot. What am I doing wrong? An excellent video. Many thanks.

    • @grantatkinson8108
      @grantatkinson8108  6 лет назад

      Hi Richard, after going into the Custom Controls menu, and selecting the button that you will make use of to switch between Ai Servo and One Shot, you should find yourself in a screen with the text, below the name of the button you chose to use like this: "Select the function to assign". With the option "ONE SHOT-SERVO" highlighted in blue, press the INFO button on the back left of the camera, that ought to take you into a further screen that gives you two choices, and 'HOLD" is one of them. Choosing HOLD will make it stay permanently switched to One Shot or Ai Servo. I should have added that extra step in the video!

  • @jeremyturner76745
    @jeremyturner76745 7 лет назад +1

    Grant, at 8.26 minutes in this video, under Custom Controls, you show how to customise the * button to switch between One Shot and Servo. I've set this up, but when I'm in AI Servo and push * , it changes to One Shot only for as long as I hold down * , when I release * , it goes back to AI Servo. On your video, when you touch * , it changes from one to the other, and stays there till you touch * a second time.. What's the explanation?

    • @grantatkinson8108
      @grantatkinson8108  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Jeremy, once you have gone into Custom Controls, and you are in the screen with all of the *AE Lock options, and you move the orange highlight field onto the One Shot/Servo option, instead of pressing SET, first press the INFO button which will bring up a deeper screen option to allow you to choose HOLD. Then it will stay in the mode you set it in.

    I was curious if you had any suspicion towards my issue.
    I have a canon 70-200mii paired with a 5d Mark 4.
    while using servo, the lens likes to hunt and it will miss easily over half the shots. even with a moderately moving subject, ill also use single point to ensure itt isnt missing on foreground/background.
    really disappointing considering all of the good things i have heard about the lens
    also note, my other lenses have no issues while in servo.

    • @grantatkinson8108
      @grantatkinson8108  6 лет назад

      hi Kyle, it is hard from afar to have a real idea what may be causing the problem. I am assuming that setting the Tracking Sensitivity to Minus 2 (-2) hasn't helped?
      Are you using other Canon lenses successfully on the same moving subject matter that are of similar focal length?

    Hi Grant, what is your Picture Style in your wildlife photography?

    • @grantatkinson8108
      @grantatkinson8108  4 года назад

      I shoot in RAW, and I process the raw image using Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop. So the Picture Style settings only affect the small preview that shows up on the back screen of my camera when I am reviewing. Because of that the Picture Style has no affect on the images that I process and convert into Jpeg or Tiff etc. There are quite a good number of Picture Styles to choose from, none of them is bad, they really come down to your personal preference with regard to colours and tones, and contrast....

    Hi Grant
    What I want to do is take a series of photos, tracking the movement of the subject (bird, F1 car, person) across the frame - so at the beginning of the sequence for example, the subject will be top right, and finish low left. So I’m trying with
    Camera in manual;
    AI servo;
    Drive mode high speed continuous
    Menu: AF1, case 4;
    Menu AF4, Initial AF point = manual;
    Menu AF4, Auto AF point selection EOS iTR AF = ON
    I’ve tried all 7 focus options: spot AF, 1 pt AF, Expand AF area etc ….
    But the focus point remains static and doesn’t track the moving subject. Ideas?
    Yours
    Jeremy

    • @grantatkinson8108
      @grantatkinson8108  7 лет назад

      Hi Jeremy, you will get the hang of that type of tracking best when using the last option in the focus point menu, which is 61 Pt Auto.

    • @jeremyturner76745
      @jeremyturner76745 7 лет назад

      ok, I'll keep trying, thanks!

    • @grantatkinson8108
      @grantatkinson8108  7 лет назад

      You should see it easily in fact through the viewfinder, even if you focus on something that is static and you move the camera yourself...just to get the hang of it. Works best when the subject is clearly, clearly defined from the background by proximity to you, or when subject is highly contrasted and background less so...

    • @jeremyturner76745
      @jeremyturner76745 7 лет назад +1

      Thanks again Grant. Yes, that works, but it seems the subject must contrast very strongly with the background - which might not always be the case. I think I have to just keep practicing and trying different options. And move away from the 5 cases and play with the settings as you describe in one of your later videos.

    Hi Grant - I'm so pleased to have found your videos. I've just upgraded from 5D3 to 5D4 and these videos would have made the decision a lot easier! Your presentations are superbly clear and understandable and now I have a good understanding of the AF system and how to best set it up, particularly single button presses rather than the default button+wheel. I also use shutter button focus, and like you I am left eye dominant so it's useful to see that all those buttons are still usable with your left eye to the camera (and nose over the screen). As I also have an 80D many of the same considerations apply. A question about your Gimpro gimbal - when do you use it in full gimbal, or in sidekick mode?

      Hi there Hans, so on the 5DMk4, if you go to Custom Controls, and press SET, then go to the Star * button control symbol and press SET again, like in the video, you get a list of 9 icons (options). If you highlight the one that says "ONE SHOT - SERVO" with the orange field, then press the INFO button on the top left of your camera back (alongside the viewfinder) you should get a screen that allows you to choose whether to have the change only when you press the button OR, the one you want, which is HOLD. Highlight that in the orange field, press SET button and you should be good!
