    Even as 2024 heads to a close, although I moved to R5’s for my commercial work a few years back, having used 5D MkIII’s for a decade, couldn’t bring myself to sell on all my 5D MkIII’s, so kept one back, I still enjoy it, and use it for non work related stills, more than I have ever used the R5’s, but also, it gets an outing at many of my commercial shoots - definitely the D5 MkIII remains my best camera, the R5’s are ‘just work tools’ , a feeling I never attributed to the 5D MkIII

    I just sold a beat up 5d3 for a friend and have just purchased one for myself in excellent condition. I also have a 1Ds3 in excellent condition. I shoot mirrorless too but I can only afford the older professional cameras. Mirrored cameras have an aesthetic the mirrorless don't have, in both form and image quality. But, I also like how a mirrorless camera is easier to clean and keep clean (sensor).

  • @ponderingnugget

    The 5diii focus magnification assist in live view works in a very similar way to mirrorless cameras. I used to use it for macro work on a tripod. It's a great feature. I also find using a single dslr focus point to find focus in a busy scene works better than mirrorless for certain types of photography, especially wildlife. DSLRs also have less shutter lag than mirrorless DSLR cameras are still very viable today. There is nothing wrong with them.

    Excellent review , I bought this camera new in 2017 right after the price dropped from 3700 dollars to 2600 dollars on average, mine was new and I got it for 2200 dollars and it’s still in excellent condition, I’ve shot dozens of weddings and events of all types , I will always keep this camera , it’s a beast for durability, I intend to get a mark 4 soon but only because of the wireless features, if your on the fence about getting this camera , it’s an excellent one to have it’s still very feature rich if you can buy the lens to go with it you can’t go wrong and it’s nearly impossible to shoot bad photos , I use the 24-70 2.8 lens and 70-200 2.8 lens most of the time , both l lens red ring so as always the glass is the secret to wonderful pictures .

    Since I don't shoot sports etc weddings are probably the fastest action I see through my viewfinder. The MK2 is solid, its reliable and it does what it says on the tin, so I am more than happy enough to use it as my primary backup. (I use a 1DX MK1 as my primary daily driver).

    A friend of mine is a professional photographers, she just sold all her gear to move to another country. Once there she bought that camera for 800 dollars and man...those photos have no business looking that good, the canon as you said are mind-blowing. I just got a a7III and I feel stupid I dropped 2k for that camera when I could have gotten away with just 800 bucks

    • @rudermanphoto
      @rudermanphoto  5 месяцев назад +1

      One of the things I noticed when I got the R6 was that the images actually didn’t look that much better then my old 5d3, but the difference was that it could consistently get images that looked amazing, that’s really the biggest thing you pay for with modern cameras.
      I guarantee your A7iii will be much better in more challenging scenarios, but yes in a studio with controlled lighting you probably won’t notice a huge difference, but just goes to show how good value the 5d3 still is!

  • @localnavy433
    @localnavy433 5 месяцев назад +1

    I have to agree with you that shooting on a dslr is still viable in today’s world. I had the 5D3 and loved shooting on it. I sold it for the Canon 6D because it is better for the Milky Way photography that shoot and the price point for that body is easier to replace as well. The colors on both bodies are way better than what you get with modern mirrorless bodies. With all that being said I am currently shooting two 6D’s and a canon 1DX for the same price as a used Canon R6 bodies only. I love that I have a main body for sports and portraits and two bodies for my wedding shoots. The fact is using older gear just means you are shooting slower and for me that means I have time to think about the images more.

    It kind of just proves that people need to chill on swapping and changing gear to often, cameras like this and the more modern versions r6,r6mkii and so on are designed to last for decades. Just mirrorless I feel is only now starting to mature to the point where there reliable enough (focus,battery power and build) to actually say this Fuji still have a ways to go. Well unless you own a Sony from the last 10 years or so they’ve had it nailed for a while now. Great work

      Yeah I feel people confuse the hobby of photography with the hobby of dropping money on photography gear. Like, the first is a skill you have to develop. Dropping 1000s on the latest gear won't magically transform your photography. Any old prosumer body like the 5D3 + some decent glass is more than enough to to produce stellar images either for hobby or pro use. But companies and their influencer have to keep the sales going so...

  • @JikoMuskato
    @JikoMuskato 14 часов назад

    Just wonder what happened. I bought the 5D Mark III in 2012 and it was my main camera up until summer '24, when I smashed a lens into the camera. This is when I bought the R6 Mark II. But I still got the 5D Mark III repaired (and even rubber parts were replaced for better ones) and it still works perfectly and now they're used pretty much the same depending on the task. It's still working great and over the last decade I never had the feeling I'm missing out on anything. Yeah, I'd have taken the 5D Mark IV but it was just too expensive. And the R6 Mark II has a better AF and especially IBIS. Using really old lenses, such as FD mount lenses, is a lot of fun on mirrorless models with both IBIS and focus peaking.
    But apart from extreme low light scenarios the 5D Mark III can handle most other situations and it actually feels better in the hands than the R6 Mark II, which at first felt like a toy in comparison. And to me the 5D Mark III still doesn't feel old apart from watching "retrospective videos" on it. I always set my 5D Mark III to the silent shutter mode. It's not as loud and not shooting sports the speed is still fast enough for me so why should I use the louder shutter mode? So yeah: I'm still using the 5D Mark III even for professional work such as product photography, where I prefer the "dumb AF" over the AI powered AF found in mirrorless cameras.
    Yes, I don't really like recent Canon politics with not allowing third-party lenses, which is one reason why I'm not buying any RF lenses but only use EF mount lenses, which is possible with third-party ones. And of course I use both DSLRs and mirrorless models so EF lenses just work with both.
    Are there better deals than the 5D Mark III out there? Well - here I can see used Nikon D800 for about the same price, which does have a better sensor. It was released like the same time as the 5D Mark III though and it's not a clear win for Nikon here. Starting from nothing I'd probably rather choose the Nikon though.

    Thanks for this video and quite right with you ! I've just added this legendary camera to my bag last month and it was just an old dream ! so happy actually with the small 50 f1.8. I was an ex canon user with the 70D. Las , I sold it several years ago with all the lenses to get a fuji xt3 with lenses primes and zoom. Very satisfied with them but, but I missed something and didn't find the same confort and happiness to shoot with ! And Today after several years seeing the run for more and more pixels and sharpness my choice was to step back and beside the hybrid I choose to buy this famous 5d, happily very new and I wish for a long time together for specific projects. Very great camera not only today for beginners but also for all photographers which look for much more than sharpness and pixels... and so much great lenses to add for amazing work; good colors, softness...great direct out of the camera too if wanted.

    Ah yes, the Canon 5D Mark III was my first serious camera too.
    I got a battered and beaten-up used 5DIII for around US$500. But it still worked! Was a massive upgrade for my images.
    The 5DIII is one of the cheapest full-frame DSLRs that also has dual card slots. So a good option for someone transitioning into paid work where you need instant backup.
    I like having a backup camera that’s as capable as the 5DIII. Gives me peace of mind that if my primary camera fails, I can still get the job done with the 5DIII.

    • @rudermanphoto
      @rudermanphoto  5 месяцев назад +1

      It is indeed! One of the big reasons why I think it’s so worth getting one over the 5D2 or the 5Dc as you have these dual slots for redundancy, and I was blown away at how cheap they are nowadays - helps that so many professionals used these so there’s plenty around and none of them are broken haha

    • @MarcusSortijas
      @MarcusSortijas 5 месяцев назад

      @@rudermanphoto Yes, I’ve seen used 5DIII’s for under US$400 sometimes, which is crazy cheap for a pro-level camera that can still produce high-quality images you can get paid for.
      Similarly, I also considered the 5D Classic, 5D Mark II and 6D. They’re all fine cameras, but when I researched them they all had dealbreakers for me.
      5DC used a different, older battery than the LP-E6 that was more widely used on Canon cameras. Which meant I’d have to buy different batteries when I upgraded cameras. The 5DC’s color science are still a siren call for me though lol.
      5D and 5DII for only using CF cards. I wanted to use SD cards. Cheaper and widely available.
      6D for the simple autofocus system. The WiFi and compatibility with the Canon Camera Connect app was tempting. But if I was going to use the app for selfies, I’d want a flip-out screen.
      5D Mark IV was out of budget, about the same price as the Canon EOS R at that time. With the convenience and features of the EOS R, if I was going to spend that much money, I’d get that over the 5DIV.
      In the end, the 5D Mark III won out because it has the same (or similar?) autofocus system as the Canon 1DX (flagship sports camera), the dual card slots and value for money. Ticked the most boxes for me. So it became my first serious camera.

    • @rudermanphoto
      @rudermanphoto  5 месяцев назад +1

      @@MarcusSortijas personally I’d pick the 5dIV over the regular EOS R for the dual cards and overall QOL improvements but yeah otherwise all the reasons you have explained are why I kept my 5D3 for as long as I did and continued to keep using it, it just delivered such excellent performance long after many replacement cameras had come out, and honestly still delivers results that are just fantastic given how affordable you can find them!

    • @MarcusSortijas
      @MarcusSortijas 5 месяцев назад

      @@rudermanphoto Good points.
      For sure, dual card slots are important.
      In my case, I had a 5DIII when I got an EOS R, so if I needed dual card slots I’d go back to the trusty 5DIII.
      The EOS R was for self portraits and simple videos. Although I love using it for photography.

    There is so much reason to pick the 5D III, It is one of the last Canon DSLRs that support Magic Lantern that is modern, I never picked it up when it was new as I was quite literally 5 years old but shot on two 5D III and image quality is still up there today, Autofocus on 5D III is fine, for 90% of work DSLR older AutoFocus does the trick, Honestly was an unexpected surprise how good they are coming from Sony Mirrorless, they don't make Cameras like they used to, the flippy and OLED Screens make them so much more delicate, I appreciated its Tank like body and by far has photo battery life better than a majority of Mirrorless Cameras, it has no Battery Anxiety and its something thats not really been matched, I think the DSLR platform is harder for beginners and the weight for alot of people who are less able bodied than me is definitely a point of contention, overall great video and a Camera that has come and go from my life when my Sony was just not having it!

    Great retro review! Long live the 5DIII! I love this camera. I added a G9 (which interestingly has DR which is slightly better than the 5DIII) rather than a mirrorless Canon RF mount, as I didn't appreciate the Canon functionality crippling and also the third party lens blocking strategy. Lumix is much more customer focused while also offering outstanding quality and unbeatable value. I love it that you can adapt EF lenses to both LUMIX MFT and full frame cameras. I expect my next camera to be a LUMIX: the question is whether it will be G9II or S5II/X... I now have 9 MFT lenses which are outstanding quality in a small package.

    I’m a late comer to the whole Canon DSLR ecosystem. I love the output of the Canon 5D Classic paired with my Olympus OM Zuiko lenses and Super Takumar M42 lenses. Have had the Mark II off the back of the Classic, and while amazing, I just prefer the simplicity of the Classic more and result of the 12mp sensor is more that enough. Suits the older manual lenses more in my humble opinion.
    Just purchased the Nikon D700 to pair with the 5D, and that is an amazing camera. It’s beefier and chunkier than the 5D, and the low light performance is a bit better. The whole menu system on the 5D Classic is so nice and simple to use which I love. The Nikon D700 menu is too convoluted to me.
    I would urge anyone to consider the older DSLRs if starting out. You can pick them up cheap, and the things that made them great and flagship cameras all them years ago, still make them great today.

      The 5d Classic is the one camera I really regret selling, I had such a minty perfect example that I sold to fund the Mark 3 and the person who bought it off me broke it a month later by somehow trying to shove an SD card into the CF slot and bending the pins :(
      Someday I’ll get another one!

    I just bought one of these in great condition with a battery grip for 350€ of FB marketplace. I've had a mkii for years now and wanted a little upgrade / second camera for cerain shoots and im really happy with it. Way more of an upgrade then i thought it would be, AF is way better, buttons are more customisable, "silent" shutter gives me more confidence shooting in relativly quiet enviroments and the dual card slot has already saved me. I'm a student so an R5 or even an R6 are to pricey for me atm and the 5Dmkiv is just not relevant for the price it's still going for. And even tho I'm using a camera that's over a decade old I still get people saying they like my pictures better then those of other photographers at the same concert with body's over 10 times more expensive compared to what I paid for mine. Goes to show gear isn't everything and old DSLR's are still more than capable for professional work.

    • @rudermanphoto
      @rudermanphoto  5 месяцев назад

      Yeah, I always thought the 3 was a much more notable upgrade over the 2 then the 4 was over the 3.
      Using it again I can 100% see it still being totally relevant today, provided you work within its limitations ofcourse.

    I still have my 5diii and can see no reason to update. It is my back up to my Fuji Xpro2 bodies, and allows me to use my bag full of Canon zooms, one of which I was issued, as an agency photographer in 1992. It still works well and is sharp.
    I can't see the reason to always go after the latest and greatest in gear, it's not this that makes the picture.
    I've used dozens of cameras starting with my Minolta XG1 in 1980, going through a range of Nikons, from FM2, FE, F3, F4, before moving to Canon with the EOS1 and then the first digital cameras EOS1N DCS3.
    As long as my current cameras work, I'll keep using them. My only motivation to change camera bodies would be if one camera broke and was too expensive to fix, or not possible to get fixed..
    When an artist paints a picture, no one asks him what brush he used..

      I would continue to keep using it if I didn’t require a camera that was a lot more capable in very low light environments, for studio portraiture work the 5D3 is still entirely capable and honestly delivers results that I prefer compared to my Fuji’s given the full frame sensor.
