  • Episode 4 in the quick watercolour birds series.
From an artist point of view at least, I've always had a slightly obsession with trying to capture Flamingoes in paint!! I think it's the wonderful and unusual shapes and the way light plays on their colours
The colours for this painting were all from Holebein:
    Permanent Red (orangey red)
    Quinacridone Magenta (cool pinky red)
    Ultramarine Blue (warm, slightly purpley)
Imidazilone Yellow (slightly cool, similar to lemon yellow)
It was painted on Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolour paper (gummed block) with a size 14 & size 8 synthetic round brush.

In this series we will be looking at using minimal equipment to create quick & simple, 10 - 20 minute, watercolour paintings of birds. The emphasis will be on lots of movement, character and letting the beautiful medium of watercolour just do it's thing! With just the odd hit of detail. These are going to be fun and expressive watercolours, full of life...and hopefully for everyone from total beginner to seasoned watercolourist.
As the series goes on I will be building on the these approaches, principles and tips, so please consider subscribing if this is your thing.

Thank you for the videos and particularly for the drawings on your patreon page. 😊 I printed the raven but then I discovered that with your explanations (and a proportional divider) I manage to copy them freehand. I am at a point where I consider that an achievement 😉 The colour part will get better, I hope...

Love your quick tips ! This was such fun to hold my breath with you as you went into the “scary bits”. 🤣🤣🤣 I know that feeling. Your voice over of not really always knowing what direction your painting will take you is fascinating. I always think I am the only one who feels lost and then “ something” takes over... that is hard to teach, but you do it really well. Flamingos are my favourite bird and your beak drawing tips just turned on the lights. Thank you. I am binge watching all your RUclips’s and think another Patreon charge is coming up in my future. I can learn so much.

I have just discovered your tutorials and am totally "hooked". What a great style, a bit abstract yet enough realism to know what the subject is. A wonderful instructor, clear, concise and so very helpful with your tips. I've just downloaded the flamingo drawing and will attempt the painting soon. Thanks so much for your assistance.

Wow I am so glad I found you! The way you do your backgrounds was exactly what I was looking for as I love some whimsical almost carefree moments in the background for a lack of a better way to say that! Love it! Very brilliant

Thanks, Tom! You're so generous with sharing your process and tons of experience. You really make the viewer understand your choices and why these things work.
I'm going to give this a second try. My first, the head was out of proportion and I used Fabriano artistico and it doesn't lend well to layering. The sizing is vegan and it makes lifting incredibly easy. I'm sure that quality can be wonderful when your technique calls for it. Just another consideration when putting together materials. So, here we go!
Again, thank you and it's a true pleasure to paint so colorfully and loose. Love your style.

What is the blue color you used for the background?

    • @tomshepherdartist
      @tomshepherdartist  3 года назад

Hi Gloria. So I introduced a Prussian Blue. I then mixed it with a touch of the Ultramarine, some yellow and also a touch of red to make it even darker. It's great for powerful rich darks. All though you can achieve similar with Pthalo blue also :) T
