Hello Tom. Id like to see a eurasian blue jay if you ever have space. The blue/black wing feathers will look wonderful. Best wishes Casey

Birds seem to be my thing that I'm good at. I painted 2 different roosters without drawing anything and the tails turned out superb. I can't even believe I painted them lol

Just couldn’t get this one right. That said, the Aussie Red Gold is such a great color.

Tricky one, not much light and shadow to go on always makes it harder for me. Love that colour!!

Tom - I really like your style of painting- but it seems so random and intuitive, like you’re just making decisions on the spot rather than having a game plan. This makes it hard to utilise as a guide. But maybe that’s your point, to be intuitive and spontaneous rather than having a set idea of what to do...?
I do get a lot of help from your advice about brushwork, paint consistency, etc. and perhaps the best lesson is remembering to stay fast and loose rather than get fixated on details.

Thanks for a great comment and points! I think there is a level of intuition within an overall gameplan...main plan being to really try and create a shadow side and light side to the bird and get those colours flowing!!
It’s hard to explain but I think you’ve summed it up well. I do have an aim and idea but within in that there’s plenty of room for spontaneity!
Ultimately I think focusing on really enjoying the paint and brushstrokes can help hugely. Plus taking time at the start to ask, “what is it that really attracted me to paint this?”....making this the priority and this can help to steer away from uneceesary details
It’s a tricky one to explain I think. But it’s always born out if the fundamentals of simple but accurate shapes and thinking about tonal values, light and shadow...everything else is secondary :)
