      Thanks for the video and the helpful tips about negative space! I think I may like all birds... :) But I am curious how you would paint ducks in your style. A male mallard or maybe a more colourful duck like a mandarin if you prefer that. Personally I really love the green and blue shades of mallards! :)

    Oh wow that’s a gorgeous hummingbird. I painted my version of your style but did it without watching this video. I put the background in first after applying some masking fluid to my pencil drawing. Then did the bird in much different colors than you chose, Quinacridone Rose, Cobalt Blue, Cereulean Blue, & Jane’s Gray. 😳 And instead of splattering I did scraping with the end of my brush for the movement.
    I have definitely enjoyed watching your process with this painting. Thanks for sharing this wonderful informational video with us.

    Really beautiful work, Tom. I'm so impressed with, not only your artistry, skill and knowledge, but also your ability to articulate what you're doing and why. And then organize it all in a way that makes you're lessons easy to follow and learn from. Also, your brush handling and paint application really highlights how important brushwork is in painting. Then there's water regulation on paper and brush... whew! Thank you, again!!

    Tom.. When you being the brush out of the water pot, and after you wipe it on the paper towel you take the brush to your left hand. Are you removing more water or just straightening the hairs of the brush?
    Thankee kindly Tom.

    • @tomshepherdartist
      @tomshepherdartist  2 года назад

      Hmmm, that is a very good question. I actually don't notice I am doing that, so I am not quite sure what I am doing. I tend to use the palette and brush together to change the shape of brush, straighten hairs so when I really think about it I think I am squeezing out any excess water and possibly juts feeling how wet it is. Good question...I will try and be more aware of that and see what I am doing! T

Also, I would LOVE to learn how to think when I want to transform a birdphotograph into an abstract painting like this one, I just looove all the white space in the bird that is not painted!!! Hi Linda, a comment bout Pprinceton brushes is showing in my notifications but it won't let me answer it! I used to ue Princeton brushes, they are very nice. But I now much prefer Escoda Mops and Jackson Raven mops, both Faux squirrel hair. Also really like the new Winsor and Newton Synthetic Sable & Squirrel. Pus ProArte Prolene rounds for smaller work. Hope that helps. T

    Do you have a preference for any particular make of watercolours?

    • @tomshepherdartist
      @tomshepherdartist  3 года назад +1

      Hi ya Janet. I do indeed. I use almost entirely Holbein. They are lovely rich colours, almost all are transparent and they have very high light fastness, especially the colours I use. I also use PWC for the same reason and the odd Daniel Smith ones, simply because they make some really unusual and interesting colours (aussie red gold is a real favourite!!) T
