In this series we will be looking at using minimal equipment to create quick & simple, 10 - 20 minute, watercolour paintings of birds. The emphasis will be on lots of movement, character and letting the beautiful medium of watercolour just do it's thing! With just the odd hit of detail. These are going to be fun and expressive watercolours, full of life...and hopefully for everyone from total beginner to seasoned watercolourist.
As the series goes on I will be building on the these approaches, principles and tips, so please consider subscribing if this is your thing.

Love listening to your thought process while painting. Also it is heartening to know even established artists sometimes make mistakes! We are all human after all!!
Allyson Berry yes we are!! And yes we do!!!...especially with watercolour. My success rate is probably about 2 out 3 on a good day!!;)...thank you
Great learning curve🙏
Cecilee Georgeson 😁🙌🏼🙏
Your work is just so beautiful, I love your painting style. I especially find your commentary on your thought process as you paint so very helpful, I've learned a lot already. I would like to get color into my backgrounds like you do, I'm going to work on that. I just found your channel and am subscribed.
Thanks so much for the comment, so glad it helps. If you start off light with colour you’ll be fine and go stronger as you get more confident :) T
@@tomshepherdartist Thanks Tom,

I’d love to see the picture you’re working off
Thanks Lisa, I do this in more recent videos as I know it is really helpful. T
Hello Tom. Please could I ask where you purchased your metal mixing palette from. I am looking to find one but not sure where to look. Thankyou so much.
Hi Casey, it was actually given to me years ago by someone getting rid of their watercolour gear! I love it, but haven't seen anything similar....The closest I've found is by searching "Aluminium Watercolour Palette"...add "Holbein" to that and I'm pretty sure they do one identical. or very close :) T
ps juts did an extra search, found the term "colour around" really helps too :)
Thankyou for your help with this Tom. Much appreciated. 👍
I would have closed the tail, giving it that look of speed, launching from the ground.
Why no thumb nail test painting first?
Hi Gary, I do often do so for larger or more complex pieces, or even a larger charcoal piece if I really want to work things out before. T
Are you a 100% pure watercolour artist? Never use mix media, like wax crayon?
I’ve never used waxed crayon but I’m certainly open to using various things. I’ve seem some wonderful work using watercolour, gouache and pastel...so much to explore!
Gouache at the end! So you are not 100% watercolour, which I like. If it works use it, I say.
Absolutely, I agree. Why box ourselves in too much? Having said that I often work with just watercolour, often a touch or two of gouache, but I’m certainly not adverse to trying even more mixed media as time goes on. T
