    Hi everyone, what bird would you like to see me paint?
    Or do you have any other topics or questions you would like me to cover in the Watercolour Bites series?
    Please leave a comment and I'll see what I can do!!:)

    Even though I've been pandemic painting since 5/20, I rely mostly on tracing so it is liberating to draw these simple birds and gain a little confidence. Thank you, Tom!

    Everything about this tutorial is positively BRILLIANT, as you Brits would say. Your methods are very different from the Ron Ranson "big-brush" process I've been using, but-as a lifelong birder-I'm determined to learn your approach to recreate lovely birds like this avocet. Thank you so much for doing this series and for sharing your extraordinary teaching and artisitc talents!

      Thank you for such a kind comment and so glad you enjoyed it! Love Ron Ranson's work, but yes, a very different approach. T

    I just found your channel, and have watched two of your uploads so far. I like them, and I think I will learn quite from your uploads. Thanks. Not only that, but I've noticed that your catchphrase seems to be "let the paint do its thing". Which is not a bad maxim, and might look good on a T-shirt.

    Love your paintings. Love that you use watercolour in a expressive way and not so hyperrealistic. Gives it more feeling :). Very inspirational. Best regards from Sofia in Sweden , Stockholm.

      @@tomshepherdartist i tired my hands on the Averset. I find it really difficult to not have my paint layers dry uo before I come back with the next color. I guess I’m just being too hesitant with using enough of the paint, so I also can’t use enough water without the color diluting. It’s good practise, I think I will try it again :)

    Hi Tom, I’ve looked everywhere for a watercolor of an Angel Hawk. They hover, and are said to represent the spirit of a loved one who has passed. My sister just lost her husband and I’ve painted one... but am very new to watercoloring, actually to art in general... and would love to see what you come up with!

      Hi there, sorry to hear that. I love the symbolism around birds also and this is obviously very special. I would live to give one a go. Just to be clear, are you talking about me creating one as a tutorial? or commissioning a piece? Either is completely fine, and very do-able :) Kind regards, T

    • @jayleigh_bee
      @jayleigh_bee 3 года назад +1

      @@tomshepherdartist I would love a tutorial. I cannot afford a commissioned piece, at this time, I don’t know what to do about painting the motion (taken to hover); how to paint an almost completely white bird, and how to communicate the spirit of this bird without the minute details. Thank you for considering this request!

    Hello Tom, gosh your videos are totally brilliant and the results are gorgeous. You posted the avocet two years ago so I don't know if you will read this, but I have a question. How, when your brush is saturated with both colour AND water do you get those broken, dry brush effects, for example, early on where you have lots of water in your brush and you're painting the ultra marine blue shadow? I have tried and tried to replicate it, but failed and find it only works if I have plenty of paint but very little water. Do you have any little demos on this? Many thanks for your tutorials, I love them.

    • @tomshepherdartist
      @tomshepherdartist  2 года назад +2

      Hi there, so glad you like the video! Thank you:)....as you say, broken brushstrokes with drier brush/paint much easier. When you have more water in brush for lighter tones you need to be more deliberate with the way you use the brush to create broken marks. I tend to use the brush very quickly and almost skin it over the paper. This will give very broken edges and marks. You can always go back and “fill in” if it’s a bit too broken:) I hope that helps!!
