  • How to paint a BIRD in watercolor. This easy to understand painting tutorial is designed for watercolorists of any ability of experience level.
I try to cover some basic watercolour theory that applies to all subject as well as some bird specific tricks & tips to help you improve and progress your watercolor paintings.
Another beautiful family of birds, the Bee-Eaters. This one is a European Bee-Eater, but there will certainly be more to come from these wonderful birds in this series!
The colours for this painting were a mixture of Holbein, a few PWC and one Daniel Smith:
    Ultramarine Blue
Maganese Blue (happily replace the Pthalo or just use Prussian)
Burnt Sienna (mixed with ultramarine makes wonderful deep darks)
    Quinacridone Red
Aussie Red Gold (Daniel Smith Watercolours)
    Indian Yellow
    Turqouise Blue
It was painted on Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolour paper (gummed block) with a size 14 & size 8 synthetic round brush.

In this series we will be looking at using minimal equipment to create quick & simple, 10 - 20 minute, watercolour paintings of birds. The emphasis will be on lots of movement, character and letting the beautiful medium of watercolour just do it's thing! With just the odd hit of detail. These are going to be fun and expressive watercolours, full of life...and hopefully for everyone from total beginner to seasoned watercolourist.
As the series goes on I will be building on the these approaches, principles and tips, so please consider subscribing if this is your thing.

Just discovered your channel. LOVE it! You're a very good teacher and your demos are such a pleasure to watch. Loose and expressive, for me, is what watercolor is about. You're very inspiring! Thanks for sharing what you know. Happy holidays!

Hi Tom! Thank you for sharing your bird painting videos 🙂. May you please let us know the brand(s) of the Manganese Blue and Indian yellow? Is that genuine Manganese Blue PB33 you’re using?

    • @tomshepherdartist
      @tomshepherdartist  2 года назад

My pleasure, thank you :) It is Daniel Smith Indian yellow. And Holbein Manganese, actually called manganese Nova/new and is PB15, not PB33.

What, no masking liquid? You could have saved the eye, but I understand you wanting to keep it simple.

Hi Gary, apologies for slow reply, I did reply on phone months ago but seems not to have registered. I have never tried masking fluid, but it is on my list. T
