These two hugely talented artists came from country royalty and formed one of the most underrated duos in the business. This lovely ballad of love and separation is their signature tune and remains one of my favorites. Thanks again for another insightful reaction/rating, Don, and keep countryin' that rock.

When I was stationed in California their “cowboys” were called dress me up, f**k me, Barbie doll cowboys 😂😂😂 We noticed things they didn’t have that we had they had no farm or ranch history and we noticed they didn’t have clauses on their hands from work.

Don thanks for doing this song for me. David Frizzle has a good voice, it runs in the family. Leffty Frizzel is his older brother. He also has a lot or great songs. Shelly West is probably best known for "Jose Cuervo". Thanks brother.

I wonder where they are today. We saw them in NJ, and I believe it was during the urban cowboy craze. They had some good songs, both together and as individual artists. Thanks for the good memories, Don.

2 of the 4 writers of this songs were husband and wife team of Boudleaux and Felice Bryant who also have written such songs "Bye Bye Love", "Wake Up Little Susie" and "All I have to do is dream" by The Everly Brothers .

There is a lot happening between the lines, that someone who grew up in an urban or suburban community wouldn't necessarily catch. "A rancher's daughter" he knew not only the girl but her father bc everybody knows everybody in less densely populated parts of the country, and this breeds a certain level of respect in not treating poorly the daughter of a man you know and respect. There's a lot that can be inferrred in these lines most easily accessed by persons who have experienced this rural agrarian lifestyle.

This was my mother's song. She went with a man from Oklahoma; she cussed him everytime she heard this song. My brothers and I picked on her for years about it.

Many people consider the Andy Griffith Show to be a hayseed comedy with a group of bumbling backwoods county bumpkins, too dumb and isolated to realize there was a world of excitement and turmoil just outside the confines of Mayberry. But in truth, the early shows. in particular, were rich in character building, moral guidance, and the need to be true to one's self. That being said, this song reminds me of the Class Reunion episode (S3E19) where Andy meets up with his long lost sweetheart at a class reunion. As they sit alone talking and reminiscing the past, the lost love appears to be rekindling. But as the conversation progresses, the spark is squelched as they both recall why the relationship ended. Upon graduation, she had longed for a life outside the limits imposed by Mayberry and couldn't survive as "a big fish in a swallow pond"; where Andy was content with the simple life of small town America and comfort provided by friends and family. That same situation appears to be the reason for the separation in this song. Both parties clinging to the memory of their past; but unwilling to give up the thing that makes them happy in their present life. Thanks, Don for giving your time and energy to this site.

@PopKnows Thanks for the wonderful post---everybody loves Andy!! I used to watch it with my sisters when we were little, and of course as a kid the one who always cracked me up was Barney. Those two worked so well together. And of course a couple of the ladies were easy to look at. :-)

Hope you have a moment for me to tell you a little story about David Frizzell, sorry if I have mentioned it before, but every time I see him I have to tell this story lol, Years ago when I was probably in my early 20's and still a gal who enjoyed going to the clubs and having a good time, a friend and I went to see David and Shelly at a little honky tonk in Missouri, I was pretty well into my night by the time they started to sing and let me say I was not feeling any pain! I met this nice guy there and we talked and laughed for a while and then he asked me to come outside and said he wanted me to meet someone. I was skeptical about going but I went anyway, he told me to step on this bus, and I said no way would I ever go on this bus alone with a stranger, well after a few minutes he talked me into it saying no I promise I just want you to meet someone, So I stepped up into this bus and saw a man sitting in one of the seats with nothing on but his underwater, and another guy standing beside him sewing a button on a pair of pants, the young man I had been talking to in the bar said Becky I would like for you to meet my Dad, David Frizzell, my jaw dropped to the floor, I was so embarrassed to see him in his underwear, he laughed at me blushing and said any friend of my son is a friend of mine, he then asked if I had any requests for him to sing once he got on stage, I asked him to sing I'm gonna hire a wino, so his son and I went back into the bar and he bought me a drink, when David came inside the bar I asked if I could get his autograph (to dumbfounded to ask in the bus) so he said sure and asked if I had a piece of paper, I didn't have a piece of paper, but I was wearing a low cut blouse so he took out his magic marker and reached over and signed one of my breast. A little embarrassing now but I sure didn't mind that night lol.
