Yes, the voice was magnificent, soft and storytelling...and a great tale ......a southern voice of a life in Michigan !

Love this one! Lefty didn't just have a great voice....he defined the "Country voice" for generations. The tone, the smoothness, the extended vowels... he helped start the "sound" that we all recognize as Country music. Many of his best songs, I learned by listening to the many covers of them, but its always nice to go back and hear them from the master! :-)

There you go. You were talking about blowing the lid off . Exposing country musics intellect. Three minutes later....boom. Gotcha with the old switcheroo. The story captures you. Reveals a young man's suffering, struggles, desire, love, success, conquest without being graphic. It never gets too sad. There's no violence. He comes up with a creative/ somewhat disshonest way to win the girl. With a simple little tune, a guitar, and some background vocals. What a classic. Right in the pocket of the traditional country music we all know and love.

  • @hairlab9646

Jeez....he makes licks 99% of singers wouldn't attempt seem 100% effortless. That's natural talent unsurpassed in any genre.

Lefty is truly a Legend of Country Music. Back in the 60s, when all the kids were listening to the Beatles and such, I listened to Lefty, Hank Sr, Marty Robbins, And Doug Kershaw. Most artists are remembered for a song or 2, but Lefty had so many big ones. She's Gone Gone Gone, The Long Black Veil, I never go around Mirrors, Falling, I love you a Thousand Ways, etc. My favorite is I Love you a Thousand Ways.

Lefty was a true legend who had such a tremendous influence on a whole host of country greats e.g. Merle Haggard, George Jones, Keith Whitely etc. Thus he created the gold standard for those who followed him. The tune featured here has all the ingredients of a country class- memorable melody, clever lyrics and a singer endowed with a terrific voice. Another spot-on reaction,/rating, Don, and keep rockin' dat country dude.

Most people today do not know how popular Lefty was. As Merle sang: "Hank and Lefty crowded every juke box" (51). Bob Wills had his Western, but Hank and Lefty had the Country. Mom and Dad Waltz" and Long Black Veil" are both good ones.

I think one of the underappreciated aspects of this song and so many songs are the musicians; I would encourage everyone to go back and listen to this song again, and focus on the guitar that is being played in the background! Whoever is playing, the guitar is an absolute virtuoso! Another classic country music song with credible guitar playing is the song “Lonesome fugitive” by Merle Haggard; again, whoever is playing the acoustic guitar in the song is a master!
Might I suggest a country music song called “country bumpkin” by Cal Smith?

After you went through your speech about traditional country, etc., I knew something was going to happen to you. Your reaction when you knew what it was was incredible I had heard this song from my teenage years (yes, they played it on Top 40 radio do you believe that??)! But since it was so well put together, and written so cleverly, I wanted to know who created that. I was thinking Hank Cochran, Harlan Howard, or Dallas Frazier. And what a surprise - it was BILL ANDERSON!!!
