Glad to see NEO seems to be holding up to the original mechanically, from what I've seen from the demo it already seemed like it was being refined and modernized what the original gave us, and while it's a shame to see trends disappear it's probably for the best since it allows for more gear and pin variety where in the original it might've been better to stick to one brand. I played the first one and loved it when I was 18, I’m now 32 and just finding out about the sequel and am intimidated for some reason to give this one a shot. It’s been so long
Really good so far and i've made it to the halfway point I think. Runs really good on the switch as well which was a surprise. Two gripes with the game so far only: some chapters drag on a tad bit too long having you running around the city multiple times, and the second being enemy variety, which I think borrows a bit too heavily on the first game, which is not bad in of itself but they could have come up with more new noise variations and have them mix it up more in between chapters.
I just finished the game a week ago and I also was scared that the game might fail and won't live up to it's predecessor but my worrying was for nothing, I wouldn't say it excelled with it's predecessor but I think NEO is unique enough that I just can't compare it to the original TWEWY, the cast was just as amazing as the original cast in TWEWY, the combat system was just as fun and rewarding as the original TWEWY, the story is also very unique to the original, taking a different take with the Reaper's game. overall this sequel is amazing, I wish Square would make more TWEWY games in the future
It's fine to play this as a standalone if you don't care to much about the story but if you do even a little it's highly recommend that you watch a playthrough or the anime or play the game for yourself.
I finished the original The World Ends with You on my DSi (December 7th, 2024) and after a well earned cry, I'm up to jump into NEO The World Ends with You wanting to see how it compares to its predecessor. I'm not expecting it to be better or worse, though it seems like it's pretty amazing, but I'm expecting the story to resonate with me as much as the original did 🥺 Off to play I go!
Never played the first game, but I do like the way this game looks visually. Though as I believe Yahtzee said about the first game many years ago, the kids look like they stepped on a landmine in a trendy clothes shop.
"The kids look like they stepped on a landmine in a trendy clothes shop" which is, to be honest, exactly how quite a lot of teenagers you see in those areas of Tokyo look like.
One correction on your review (based on my time with the demo, I still have to wait for my copy to come in); in regards to the Special Attack you make after hitting 100% Groove. The special attack, yes is dependent on the equipped pins to some degree, but it's more determined on the ELEMENT of the pin attack that hits that 100% Groove, so it's easy to "choose" which type of special you want to unleash or make use of elemental weaknesses.
11:18 that's is false, neku and his partner can changes to any cloths, the problem is the BRV points, if a character does not have enough that character could not equip it until the BRV points were raise

Absolutely terrific game, and great review! Much more detailed and informative than Gamespot and IGN's, ignoring the scores (although I agree with this score more, too)
Is it required to play the first one to fully enjoy this one? I already know from the trailers that the protagonist of the first game appears so I would love to know.
No, you don't, even though there are some recurring characters, but they mostly appear in a different context. If you don't know them you'll think "i wonder what was up with them in the past they mention" and if you do know them you'll think "i wonder what happened to them in the meantime for them to do what they are doing now". Even though the mystery about them is different, nevertheless there is a mystery about them either way.
I played the leaked 4chan version. Slight spoilers! So... I liked most of what I've played, but it was definitely not perfect. The chapter selection screen says I'm 75% in but I'm pretty sure this is the final boss I'm up against. I got stuck so I booted up RUclips. Well, I feel that the worst thing about the game is that there are waaay too many characters, so we don't get as much time to spend with them as I'd liked. We get to talk about their feelings, but whereas in the original game that was the focus and the plot was second, here the roles feel reversed. I do like the characters that we got, I just wish we got more intimate conversations with them. I also don't like what they did with Neku. Because he does appear, that's all I'm going to spoil. What I didn't like is that when he first appears it's treated like the biggest deal ever but once he's there, he's just.. there. But we don't get to see him talk and banter and feel emotions like I expected him to. He, most of all characters, falls flat. That's not to say I didn't like the game. It's fun, it's solid, the plot twists were very twisty. The music was great, I really liked the social system they put in place. The city feels more alive than ever. I truly felt like I was playing the reapers game and solving the riddles. Again, I didn't like everything they did with the story but I wasn't indifferent at any point. I felt emotionally destroyed for the past week. I hurt my wrists really hard because I couldn't stop playing. I felt very sad and happy and frustrated. I was feeling all feelings at max intensity for this whole week. So yeah, it's worth it. My biggest criticism tldr would be that It lacks a distinct emotional, thematic core like the original. In Twewy, all aspects of the gameplay, the lore, mesh and feed off each other thematically. Like how there's two screens, trust your partner, all that stuff. There's a beauty there that was lost, in how the original was very thematically sound and focused. Overall, great game. It's just not as good as the original for me. To put it into perspective, I'd give this game an 8.5, right beside the Yakuza games and the Mother series. That's high. It's just... the original TWEWY is an 11. My favorite character was Fret, I wish he'd gotten more focus. Also Kaie, he's cool. . SPOILERS AHEAD . . . . . . (My favorite moment so far was seeing Shiki's real face. I cried. It's been so long, man. FINALLY.) END OF SPOILERS. That's it that's my Ted talk bye Time to go back and emotionally destroy myself some more. I am in literal pain.
Please put space in between where you say spoilers and the spoilers I don't really care about spoilers but for those who do it can be very disappointing to accidentally read something they consider a spoiler
Honestly, not going into the video anticipating the game too much - but just wanted to get a Zion video in my veins! Even if I don’t end the video interested in the game, it’ll all have been worth it 👌🏼
They're not very credible with reviews anyway. Other reviewers have given this game an 8/10, 9/10 and 2 of them have given it a perfect 10/10 score. Ign seems to be in the minority.
Not really worth mentioning imo. It just lets your run a bit faster and gives a groove boost that's worth about 1 beat down chance if you max it out between battles (which i personally almost never do, because you need to run across 3 areas or so before it is maxed). And it only unlocks quite a bit into the game.
You can, but I’d still highly recommend playing the first one before this one. There’s quite a bit referenced from the first game in this one and it would just allow you to really understand everything better IMO. But again, you don’t have to.
No you can understand this games plot without having to play the first game. There's an anime too if you want to watch that. I know I'm in the minority here when I say this but I really didn't think it was that bad. Give it a watch and see what you think
@@PhoenixWrightAceAttorney Thanks for the suggestion. I would play the original but getting a copy is pretty hard for me and the switch version doesn't look too appealing
It looks like you probably can but you have the protagonist and Minamimoto from the first game as supporting characters and their is likely more connective tissue in the deep lore.
Yes you can. There are some nods and references and recurring characters. But what's going on is a mystery either way, even with those recurring characters. e.g. Minamimoto: If you know his history, you are very confused why he is doing what he's doing and what's going on with him. If you don't know him, you'll think exactly the same, but for different reasons. It's really hard to describe while avoiding spoilers. Minamimoto is a really unique character, if you don't know him, you are confused by the way he behaves and talks, the same way you were when you met him in the first game. On the other hand, his goals are really unclear, even more so if you do know him from the first game. You know what he was after there, and knowing him, it's really unlikely he has given up on those goals. On the other hand, his actions in NEO don't seem to match with those goals at all. So you end up having no clue what's going on with him, no matter whether you know him or not.
Can anyone tell me if this game has a post game, new game plus, a free roam function after completing the game? I really prefer games that I can continue to play after completing them.
It does after you beat the game there’s an extra non canon chapter that you can explore freely and you can return back to each day you’ve beaten at any time. There’s also secret bosses in each level after you beat the game so there’s definitely a lot to do after you finish
At this point I am never watching IGN again. Lol. They never play the game they are reviewing and always want an exact replica of the original, this is a sequel not a remake. Lol!

To put it into perspective, I'd give this game an 8.5, right beside the Yakuza games and the Mother series. That's high. It's just... the original TWEWY is an 11. My favorite character was Fret, I wish he'd gotten more focus. Also Kaie, he's cool.

END OF SPOILERS.
That's it that's my Ted talk bye
Time to go back and emotionally destroy myself some more. I am in literal pain.
Please put space in between where you say spoilers and the spoilers I don't really care about spoilers but for those who do it can be very disappointing to accidentally read something they consider a spoiler
any ideas how to enter the code for the preorder copies on nintendo switch? thx
Thank you for the review! Can't wait to play this one, well once I finish beating the original 🤭😭
Honestly, not going into the video anticipating the game too much - but just wanted to get a Zion video in my veins!
Even if I don’t end the video interested in the game, it’ll all have been worth it 👌🏼
That makes no sense
Cool review! I'm a big fan of the channel :D
3:32 why is no one talking about the fact fred says sus?
He also makes an Among Us joke.... "He seems a little sus. He might be the impostor or he might be (spoiler)"
3:34 oh no
They really just have put an among us reference in the game.
The original TWEWY referenced A LOT of the current trends of that time so it makes sense.
@@nekotorin makes me more interested in the game weirdly.
Is it? I've been using 'sus' even before among us came out. I guess the game made it more popular
For $40 CAD Black Friday... I'm gonna grab it. Great video
Wow and on the other side IGN gave this a 7/10
What damn ign curse them.
I wouldn't stress it much.
They're not very credible with reviews anyway. Other reviewers have given this game an 8/10, 9/10 and 2 of them have given it a perfect 10/10 score. Ign seems to be in the minority.
@@PhoenixWrightAceAttorney yeah as Phoenix Wright you must go to IGN and shout OBJECTION! @ that review score
Do I need to play the previous one understand the story?
Yes, you most likely do. It seems to be a direct sequel even though Nomura said otherwise. I would recommend playing Final Remix in handheld.
So... what about the run to the beat system?
Not really worth mentioning imo. It just lets your run a bit faster and gives a groove boost that's worth about 1 beat down chance if you max it out between battles (which i personally almost never do, because you need to run across 3 areas or so before it is maxed). And it only unlocks quite a bit into the game.
Early comment 🙌 So excited to play this tomorrow!
I haven’t played the original TWNWY in over a decade. Is it worth getting this one? I’ll be honest, I don’t remember much about Neku’s adventure
It's not really connected to the first one so you could play this just fine
Can you play this without having played the original?
You can, but I’d still highly recommend playing the first one before this one. There’s quite a bit referenced from the first game in this one and it would just allow you to really understand everything better IMO. But again, you don’t have to.
Is it me, or does the narrator sound like Sean Evans from Hot Ones youtube show?🤷♂️
Whoa! How kind of you to say! - Zion
I am curious, would I be able to understand the story of this game if I haven't played the original?
there's an anime for the 1st game...
Just got it for $15 from walmart!
Same!
Ugh I’m debating waiting to play this in October to get it for my bday or just give in. Honestly depends how long the game is
50 or so hours I think, according to other reviews. I'm not sure because I am still at week 1.
@@zinszlee oh damn. Yeh it’ll probs have to wait til after tales of arise as I won’t have much game time til early September
SMT V will have a 9 or a Straight 10 in November, let's hope this comment doesn't age poorly.
ಠωಠ
yeah Nintendo life neo: the world ends on switch are worth it good.
Can you play this without knowing the story from the first one?
It looks like you probably can but you have the protagonist and Minamimoto from the first game as supporting characters and their is likely more connective tissue in the deep lore.
You can check the anime of the first game it's only 12 episodes rather than playing the first game to save time.
Do I have to play the original first?
No but it's recommend
@@AuraN_Ttv
Thanks my friend
I got a trailer for this game before the vid started
I hope this not one of them switch games with a low print run. Can someone tell me ?
Yes.. Yes this game is worth it.
Zion used the term "banter"
Jon and Alex rubbing off on you? xD
@@KRATS8K Thank you for answering, I have not been able to get a clear answer on this for a while so I am glad somebody decided to tell me.
@@lanthelancer np! I had a great time with this game I hope you enjoy it too if you haven't played it yet
good idea to give every game a 9/10 that way your viewers will stay happy.
This game gave me Tony Hawk Pro Skater vibes when I played the demo.
saved you a watch: yes. game rocks.
Good review but the original you can change your whole party's clothes not just the main one
What is that thing on the chin of the guy in the orange hoodie?
Mask.
I found so many issues with demo, doesnt make me excited for release.
I thought it was just me. Nice mechanics but they feel a little clunky.
@@cactusrosi1409 i bought it, wasnt excited none of the problems were fixed 😂
@@moondoggie9715 If you're talking about the combat then I found it to be vastly improved from the demo. Hidden complexity and strategy
Tfw they never realized you can change your partner's clothing in the og twewy
To answer the title :YES
At this point I am never watching IGN again. Lol. They never play the game they are reviewing and always want an exact replica of the original, this is a sequel not a remake. Lol!
This guy reviews things how they are supposed to.
