I did this for the first time about 1 month ago. My knowledge up until this had been changing spark plugs and tires. Impressive that you managed to fit 9 hours of work, sweat, curses, tears and bloody hands into a 4 minute video.
Excellent overview. I've watched it several times before removing the blown turbo in my 2001 Saab 95 SE V6. Although your appears to be a 4-cylinder, much of the process appears to be the same. Now I'll have to watch it in reverse to get it all back together! One question: Did you get a whole new turbocharger or just the CHRA?
Love the music! although it doesn't go well with MY turbo DIY experience at all - too smooth and simple... but it's runnin' now :) Thanks for the video!
thank you for posting this ! i am still procrastinating... my turbo is seized up for some time now... eventualy i need to roll up my sleves and get to it... thinking of replacing stock garet by mitsubishi.... cheers,
Having recently refurbished that Exact same Garrett Turbo on my 1997 Saab 2.3 ( yup 27 years in use) Finding it barely worn in process.... Easily rebearinged and resealed. What in Hell was Done ? to that pore thing ? Ingest a rock ? Forget to change engine oil EVER?
Remus, haw did you decide that the turbo was broken? I have been told that there is a serious problem with the crankcase ventilation system but for now I am tackling a different issue - fuel pump. I am also very close to getting a new turbo. Almost bought one two days ago.
It started to throw out white smoke. It was so much that I almost had a big cloud behind the car, making others slow down behind me. I just drove the car back home then and started to check what was wrong.
We replaced the turbo charger in our 2003 Saab 9-3 linear and changed the dash on the inside of the of car. Now, the lights on the inside and headlights come on but the engine will not turn over. We found that the car will not start because it went into a security lock down to prevent the car from being stolen. We need to figure out what to do with the code the engine security light gave us. It blinked twice consecutively then stopped for a second. Blinked twice followed by a brief pause. Then blinked two more times followed by the end of the sequence (no more blinks). What should we do to unlock the engine and allow the car to start? Any information would greatly help and is appreciated. Thanks!
Steve McCabe if the car is security locked you can always try to lock it using the remote and then unlock it. then try to start it. it sometimes solves the problem with the car bein immobilized. it depends on the reason to why it is immobilized i think.
Jim Mullins was he trying to upgrade the ECM to an AERO tune... If he is looking to get more power from the car . I just ordered the stage one ECM from EEUROPARTS . Best thing I ever did for my SAAB . It runs great now and no other changes need to be made .
+evilswingythingy I wasn't sure so I had to remove some parts to go down with the phone camera and see if the turbo is damaged. When I saw that the turbo was damaged I proceeded the removal process.
+Remus Eserblom thanks mate, i checked it and is buggered. purchased stigen TD04 upgrade turbo and as i wrote this i have followed all you steps and am taking a lunch break before undoing last couple bolts. your video has been a blessing
+Remus Eserblom ok its out, boy some of those bolts are tricky and take a lot of patience. now to install the new TD04 upgrade turbo.i will buy some 12x1.5 banjo bolts to replace the 14x1.5 bolts and some extra brass crush washers so i can retain the original lines as per forums
+Remus Eserblom found a complete banjo kit wth flexible lines to suit this upgrade. awaiting the arrival of that. it will make bolting it up somewhat easier too
Remus, I just ordered my GT17. I found a couple of leaks here and there that I'm going to try to address (valve cover). But do you have any suggestions about what I should look at and check out (and consider replacing) since I have the engine open and all? Thanks!
+BlastReadingSeries, first, thanks for watching the video. Second, I am just an amateur that is fixing his own cars. I don't dare to give you any professionals advice :). I usually go after "if it ain't broken, don't fix it" :). Sorry.
+Remus Eserblom yeah, I'm thinking the same... leaky engine, eh, if it still runs, purrs and doesn't overheat, is there really even a problem? :) Thanks for replying!
I know this is old video but how to diagnose is it turbo failure or cylinder head problem? I have 3,0Tid and lost power and a lot of white smoke. Engine runs smooth but power is gone and LOT of white smoke.. :S
I wasn't sure either but I had to start to remove the turbo intake pipe and stick my phone camera to check the Turbo. The Turbo was damaged so i continued to disassemble.
Awesome clip, but Always clean the oilsump out before you replace the turbo. Its usualy full of shit that clogs the pickup and the entire oilrecirculing system. if presure is low, the new turbo might as well end up like the old one in the matter of days, weeks or perhaps even 1-2 months
Open the driver door, on the left size. You should have the map of them in the manual. There is a picture with the placment on this page saabworld.net/f29/fuel-filter-change-replacement-gasoline-petrol-engine-saab-9-5-a-26457/

Thanx for the walk through. Made the swap a lot easier..
Short and sweet video!! Glad the radiator etc does not need to come out, also would use PB Blaster not WD40 for those baked on bits

Forget to change engine oil EVER?
I have no idea. Maybe I did not change the oil in time... most likely
I didn't expect you could do this job without a lift.
Thanks! Very well done!
Do NOT bend the oil and water lines to the turbo. They are a bitch to get back then! I did this mistake..

Best video ever

I have no idea about it. I saw a youtube clip on a guy who changed the security module, but it seems is not the case on your car.
hi did you ever fix this problem.
Steve McCabe if the car is security locked you can always try to lock it using the remote and then unlock it. then try to start it. it sometimes solves the problem with the car bein immobilized. it depends on the reason to why it is immobilized i think.
We fixed the problem my son replaced the control panel with one he found in the junkyard once we put the original back in she fired right up.

great video, question - is there a way of determining that the turbo is the cause of sudden and constant white smoke without removing?
+evilswingythingy I wasn't sure so I had to remove some parts to go down with the phone camera and see if the turbo is damaged. When I saw that the turbo was damaged I proceeded the removal process.

How did it go? :)
Wd40 works best on Saab, and I've used pb blaster and wd 40 works just fine. Also, wd40 cleans better than degreeser
I just bought a brand new turbo for my 2002 saab 9-5 2.3 and it came with a syringe with oil in it what is it for please help me
I have no idea. Why not ask the seller?
how do you prime the turbo pls?
Unplug the fuse for the fuel pump and crank the engine from the key for several seconds (10 should do fine).
that simple? sweet!
many thanks

Great instructional video. Little Fact: wd40 is not a penetrating oil. CRC or pb blaster are better for the application

can you do a video on removing the radiator belt on this Saab please?
+mari k will do when I will need it removed :)

Clean the oil sump... Alx, are you saying drop the oil pan down?
Can you tell me where the fuel pump fuse is? It may save me some time. Thx

How much oil did your car burn before the turbo replacement? My 2.0l 2011 engine eats up a later per 1000 km, but I really see white smoke.
The same for me, I was filling a liter from time to time
@@picmovmedia. Did you fix it by changing the turbo?
@@krut00 I get the feeling that now it consuming less oil than before.
@@krut00 the turbo I had to remove because it was broken
spellhecker errors: liter not later and rearly not really.
What's the name of the song? It's really nice.
+Marcus Smith (Agezima Beulux) thanks, it is from youtube audio library. I will check the name later
+Remus Eserblom thanks!
+Marcus Smith (Agezima Beulux) you are welcome. The name in the audio library is "Believe".
+Remus Eserblom Got it. Believer by Silent Partner. Thanks for the big help!
So is it typical to push out that much white smoke when the turbo is faulty?
In my case it was. I am not sure if it is typical but you should try to remove some parts and check the turbo.
Question, do I need to re-map ecu when installing new Turbo or is it just a simple bolt on?
AllatMamaTT if it’s the same turbo no ECU work is needes. If you use a different turbo you will have to remap
Note that i meant that if it’s the same type/model of turbo.
Jonka Olofsson well I have a GT-17 and looking to hook TD04-15 so I guess I will need a remap
AllatMamaTT oh an Aero turbo? Then you will need a remap for sure. I see why you’re swapping, the GT17 is not the best turbo ever made..
Song name?
Jincheng Zhang - Consume, found in the youtube audio library.
interesting video
why the music?
:) I have no talent for speaking
How long did that eBay turbo last?
I sold the car after 6 years, the Turbo was still working.
How much time it takes to take it out ?
A couple of hours I think
how long did the replacement take?
+Nicholas Nelson somewhere around 8 hours. I am no professional so it took some time. I did it under a couple of times.
where did you get the turbo from
devin barnes www.maptun.com/en/
How long time takes the job?
I was working in the evenings, for 3-4 days.
@@picmovmedia
Sounds like 15- 20 hours
Replacing the turbo on Saab 9-5
Keep doing these videos! Great Job! Easy to understand!
Thanks!

Thanks!
+Remus Eserblom just don't forget to clean the intercooler, cause parts of that turbo can be found in there, and some oil :)
What kind of turbo comes stock on this car? I have one and cant find any info.
More like head gasket...
