This was great and you are good. I am a fuji noob just recently bought an X-S10 and I'm trying to learn as much about fuji and their settings as possible. I shared my inbox unboxing and some pictures but your settings may have helped me .
Oh that's so great to know, I'm glad this video have helped you even a little bit :) Did you shoot with any other cameras previously or this Fuji camera is your first?
Hey Polly! Alina told me about your 500 subs! Super Gratz! What a fantastic journey so far eh! Sick shots as usual and transitions and B-roll and pictures taken, muahh. Although I don't do street photography and don't use Fujifilm and I have all the settings in AUTOMATIC (I know, embarrassing) It was still quite eyeopening video. Would love to see a nice studio, film youtube videos, Canon camera settings as well :) Much love!
Thanks so much Ken! Not going to lie - it's been a roller coaster of a journey but I LOVE IT! Haha, trust me the first year all I was doing was to shoot on automatic! And eventually started to pay a bit more attention to settings :)
Lovin your relaxed style Polly. I just discovered you and glad that I have. My only worry is you using that crumby kit lens - he he. I think you're better off with those lovely little Fuji Crons (the F2 lenses). I had three different copies of that crappy kit lens over as many years and it is a no go (if you want sharp pic's, wide open at the 55 end). Keep up the great vid's young lady!
Oh wow, three different copies of the kit lens and all crap- it must suck, I’m sorry it happened to you! I must have been lucky with mine lens then. Is it the sharpest? heck now. Low light situation? Its not the best. However, so far I’ve been pretty pleased with the results and it worked well for my style of photography. Thanks so much for watching and supporting this channel!
Hi Polly, First of all, your work is very entertaining and professional and one of the best. Subscribed and turned the bell notification on I saw you used a ND filter on your 35mm. Can you share some information about it and how you use it please :-)
Cheers Zain, I always try to find ways to keep it entertaining so I'm glad you like my work. Re ND filter, I only use it for shooting during the day time, since I want to keep the F stop low for that creamy bokah without blowing out my highlights. In this video I believe i used ND 8 which was enough for that overcast day.
Thanks Craig, I love this lens for food and lifestyle photography, but not a big fan of using it on the streets ( not yet)... what do you usually shoot with it?
Hi Polly, you talk about exposing for the highlights... can you tell me your method please? Histogram/exp comp/spot metering/highlight warning - I'd love to know an easy way. Thanks
Hey Carl, it’s super easy actually- when you take pictures ,pay attention to your histogram and make sure that your highlights are not clipping (overexposed) even if everything in the shadows is very dark. You would be able to bright shadows back in postproduction. Hope this helps :)
Perfect video. I also have x-t3, but I do shots almost always in auto mode. I'll definitely try your suggested settings, I like them. I'm also thinking about buying another lens, probably also 35mm.
I also like watching other people settings and then go out and see what works for me! Hope my settings will clear some of the smoke and help you to transition from auto to manual shooting ( nothing wrong with auto shooting btw). What lens are you shooting on right now?
Cheers! I haven’t actually played with this lens yet, but from what I know it has a snappy autofocus, great focal length and excellent value for money, so I don’t think you can go wrong there! If you choice of photography is more of a wider angle then it will be a great addition to your kit lens! But your kit lens already has that mm covered- so something to think about!
I haven't actually used 16-80mm lens so I won't be able to compare. Saying that 18-55mm is definitely on the softer side in comparison to 35mm f2. I have two POV videos on this channel where I shoot on 18-55mm 2.8-4 only- you can see how the images turned out there- may be that will be of any help.
It is an amazing camera indeed. There is plenty of ways you can expose for highlights- I've set up my metering mode for spot metering, which lets me take an exposure reading selectively from just a small part of the frame ( works perfectly when background is much brighter or darker than the main subject) or you can set up zebra settings for clipping highlights so you can always see on your screen when you have over exposed. Hope this helps :)
try ETTR, it will be a game changer. expose for specular highlights as you do, and add 2-3 stops, depending on the light conditions. it will provide more sensor saturation and higher SNR
Sound advise, I was debating if I even should include the expose for highlights point as it is a little too simplistic for what you shoul look for. I find myself using the histogram quite a bit when the pace of the shoot is a little slower (like with the new 55-200mm) but when in a run and gun situation sometimes there is no time ^^
Congratulations on MORE than 500 subscribers... I think your channel will grow very quick. Your video was very interesting and I like that you do use the X-T3 that is my camera too. One little thing to mention about this video... at some parts the background music was a little too loud for me as it was then hard to follow what you were explaining, as I'm not a native speaker. Perhaps you like to think about that for future videos. One question: Why do you set the shutter to "T"? I didn't quite get what is behind this setting.
Hello, what settings do you use directly in camera for photographs? I mean the sharpness, highlights, noise reduction etc? And for videos? For wildlife photography what do you think of the Fujifilm 70 300? Thanks if you answer. Greetings from Italy ❤️
I'm thinking about getting either an xt3 or an xpro2. I'm more of a photographer than a videographer. For family, landscape, animals, street photography, which of these two would you recommend?
Hi Classic Polly, I am a new Fan. Love watching your videos. Well made, so refreshing, very inspiring. It wouldn’t surprise me if you’ll be the next BIG thing when it comes to Photography Video Creation. Keep it up and looking forward to your next Video. Sending ❤️ from the 🇵🇭
Hi Polly, I'm actually new to photography and I came across this issue with my fuji camera. I don't know how to turn off multi-image capture, my camera takes 3 photos at once and I've tried googling it however I couldn't find a page that would show me where the settings are. Just wondering if you knew how to resolve this. I searched for it on RUclips and your video popped up. I was hoping to see if you knew of this setting.
Hey Chloe, first of all, welcome to the fuji family. What camera do you have? If it's anything like mine xt-3, then on the left-hand side on top of the camera you have a round dial. if it is set on multiple exposures (it has multiple frame mini log) then it will take multiple images. You just need to turn your dial around to either CH or CL. Hope this helps!
NIce combo, I love the 35 f2.0 Like the normal distance and SHARP....waiting for almost new T3 to show up at my door, selling my X100V , I want to have one camera and more primes for landscape and street, 14mm f2.8 coming today (should also be fun street and landscape prime). I have a X-T20 for not but the T3 looks awesome and am sure the EVD is much better.
Oh I’m salivating over 14mm f2.8. right now, I feel like I’m missing that wide angle lens in my gear. Lots of new stuff is coming your way, must be super exciting!
Hello Polly, what software you use to review your photos? I bought Xt3 and coming from Nikon, I see that the photos aren't as sharp as I was expecting based on many reviews. Either my lightroom import settings are not good or I have some quality setting issues. Please let me know how you are getting sharp images. Are you just using ISO 160, shutter 1/250 at aperture 4-8?
There might be soo many different factors why your images are not very sharp. I’ve always used LR and PS and never had really any issues with sharpness. The shutter speed does depend on the focal length of the lens eg the bigger the F length the the faster the shutter speed should be- 18mm - 1/125, 35mm/55mm- 1/250, 80-140mm - 1/500. I follow this “rule” and it works. Also, Fuji xt-3 doesn’t have in body image stabilisation, so having an optically stabilised lens is very helpful. If your images are really not sharp- I would contact fuji services for advice!
@@ClassicPolly But how do you manage in run and gun situation where you just need to capture the moment before u miss it ? I am asking because in the landscape photography that I am into I have enough time to play with the scene but street photography is more dynamic style . I am slowly inclining towards it.
well for the most part I just glance at the histogram and muscle memory for the settings kicks in. When I started i used to meter for highlights and just double check with the exposure meter. The important bit for me is not to get settings get in the way of the shot and not a small part of my favourite photographs are technically flawed in one way or another. Basically, keep shooting and you will develop speed eventually. Hope this helps ^^
Hi Polly, really helpful video thanks so much. Are you using LR or C1 to edit? Also have you tried the 16-55 f2.8 lens? Interested to know your thoughts compared to the kit lens.
Thanks Tom, I use LR and PS for post editing. In regards to the 16-55 f2.8 lens. It is not an optically stabilised lens so when it comes to video- you pretty much have to have your camera on a gimbal to achieve smooth footage. For photography - it's a great lens with a lot of versatility and a focal length that will allow you to shoot in low light conditions. It's heavier than the kit lens ( 655 g vs 310 g) so this is something to consider. The biggest difference is the price -16-55 f2.8 is almost double the price so this is a big factor in the decision making.
I use Fuji x-t200 with xc35mm F2 prime, and my problem is the colour of my pictures are very dull how to improve this? May u help me mam please or make a video on this.
I do post production on all of my images, either in Lightroom alone or Photoshop. I've done an editing video about a month ago ( the only editing video I have on my channel), I explain there how I edit my images in 3 examples. hope it helps;)
I am really enjoying going through some of your videos and at the risk of sounding like 'that guy' I would love to do some portraits with you if I saw you in the street ^_^
Classic Polly, I picked it up two days before Scotland was shut down due to the pandemic so I've really not had a chance to use it much... Plus I'm still waiting on the weather seal kit arriving (still on backorder with WEX who haven't had stock from the supplier due to the pandemic). I have taken it out on a few of my daily walks but it's not the same as going into Glasgow or Edinburgh to do street photography. Mostly, I just take my XF10 out with me, or if I'm not in the mood, just my iPhone XR, but I'm desperate to get out use it when we can finally do so to do street photography. That's not going to happen any time soon though as it's an unnecessary journey to go to both cities, something ill not do until it's safe and allowed... I've customised it, with a few accessories. JJC Handgrip, Lensmate thumb rest and an Artisan Obscura soft release... oh, and a neck strap from 595Strapco. See below what those look like: vimeo.com/426768179 vimeo.com/421231152 Flickr: thesrpspaintshop too see my pre-COVID street work, look before the end of March, there a few street images after March but mostly socially distanced ones. Classic Polly, Best regards I owned the X100S before the X-T1, so I know what the X100V is like to use. It has its foibles and it's a fair bit different than the X-T1. Obviously I can't change the less, but I mostly used the XF35mm f2 on the X-T1... A sweet combination... the X100V is a nice camera but the grip is too small, hence my addition of the handgrip and thumb rest. I didn't seem to have this problem with the X100S, accidentally knocking the shutter speed when using the camera (with the rear command dial set for shutter speed) but with this camera I seemed to be doing it all the time. The top dial doesn't give me the speed option I want, and in some ways not does using the command dial either, as I can't set it to 1/180th) I prefer to shoot at 1/160th or 1/180th as it gives a little bit of motion blur in moving subjects. Now, I'm mostly 1/200th as that is what both my cameras allow me to use. I need to use the X100V more to get the feel for it and learn to use it to the full... years of using the X-T1 has spoiled me...
I still dont really understand why you use T instead of A on the shutter speed dial. Don’t they both let you use the iso and shutter speed restrictions that you showed right after saying you use T? Does T force the camera to not go beyond those settings if the light is too different? Because I’m pretty sure that in A mode, the camera CAN use slower shutter speeds than you set in the menu if it’s very dark. Basically, I don’t really know what T actually is/does. :P
What I do not understand, you aay you’re using the T mode for the shutter speed because then you can set the minimum shutter speed in the iso settings. As much as I know, you have to dial manually the shutter speed in T mode. Don’t you override like that your settings for minimum shutter speed?
Yes you are correct! You do override settings like that! Perhaps I didn’t explain it properly here ( whoopsie daisy) 😅I set it to “T” and use the rear command dial as I prefer adjusting shutter speed that way.😉

Just got my x-t3 so love this! Lots to learn but is there a meter/exposure setting for highlight exposure or is it a technique? Thanks.

Hope this helps :)
Classic Polly thanks a lot I will check out all you mentioned 👍🏻

Can u show this in camera (video) how u expose for the highlights. ? In the next video
Appreciate. Tia
try ETTR, it will be a game changer. expose for specular highlights as you do, and add 2-3 stops, depending on the light conditions. it will provide more sensor saturation and higher SNR
Sound advise, I was debating if I even should include the expose for highlights point as it is a little too simplistic for what you shoul look for. The video itself is shot on Sony A7iii
What about your shutter type
I use mechanical one- just love the sound of it! Call me old school😉
Ооо! Полиночка набирает обороты! Умничка!!!
spasibo krasavica!
Perhaps I didn’t explain it properly on the video, my bad 😅I set it to “T” and use the rear command dial as I prefer adjusting shutter speed that way.
@@ClassicPolly OOOOOH That makes sense!
