Terrified of taking inhalers for COPD?

  • I answer a question about COPD treatment with inhalers such as Spiriva or Symbicort (or others). Many of you may sometimes be afraid of taking inhalers for a variety of reasons. I try to explain why inhalers are useful in the treatment of COPD and why in most cases they are some of the safest medication you can have. An inhaler contains very small doses of medication which is inhaled exactly where it is needed (in the airways). Most of the medication does not even get absorbed in the rest of the body.
However some people may indeed have adverse reactions from inhalers and it is important to discuss any side effects with your doctor to clarify whether it is indeed the inhaler or something else. Always seek medical advice from your healthcare providers in a timely manner.

Can i also add, that I have asthma and when I take my rescue inhaler, i do cough up phlegm after using it, so for about 1.5 to 2 hrs. I do feel like I'm worse, but then I feel better after. So it might seem like you are worse, but in reality it is your body getting the airways open and coughing up the phlegm so the airways can be clear to breathe better. So I would say try it knowing this and see if you feel better and better each day after trying it as prescribed for a couple weeks. (If the person is reading the comments, or for anyone struggling with the same issue.)

Had to stop using Symbicort as it was giving me really bad side effects, I will be trying Spiriva now and see how it goes for me. As an asthmatic it was the scariest experience

My doctor switched me to trelegy but I found the symbicort and spiriva worked better except my hair was coming out by the handful and it stopped when I switched to trelegy so not sure what to do now.

Just recently asked by my Physician try Trelegy and stop using Albuterol Sulfate and daily. Stating this should be better giving me 2 Samples. Only problem I have a harder time using, even choking and gagging because it’s a dry powder. My COPD was caused by a defective Sleep Apnea machine. Do you have any suggestions?
