So, I just bought a TG-7 and watching this video again has helped me get to know my new camera, and hopefully result in some great pictures. I'm going to London later today, the perfect place to practise street photography.
I also downloaded the expert guide which contains a wealth of useful information.
    Thanks Thomas!

Thanks Thomas, I am a Canon studio photographer, I took a Fuji X100F to Europe in 2019 but it was very hard to get a grip on the settings. Currently that camera is worth more than when I bought it. I purchased the TG-7 to provide an opportunity to shoot underwater glamour subjects. But your clear, concise presentation has given me the confidence to attempt street photography . I have never found a features presentation for a camera as detailed and easily understood as yours has been. It was excellent from beginning to end. Thank you very much. Hi mate, so I have a Fuji X100v which I do love (picture quality is great) but actually can be overwhelming. I've just bought a TG7 mainly for macro but looks a great little camera for street photography and going back to basics. How have you found using it so far?

Got my TG-7 yesterday after deliberating for what seemed so long, but in reality is probably only a few weeks. It's nice, it's not the ultimate device but is most probably the ultimate compromise. All the points you make are so right, all the hints and tips you make are so useful. This is a camera I had never considered until a month ago but I am certainly pleased to have it, a very easy carry too. I have mine set up as per all the settings in your vid, including C1 and C2 :-). The menu being a slimmed down version of others from "O", make using it a breeze. Thanks.

    • @ThomasEisl.Photography
      @ThomasEisl.Photography  Год назад +1

I agree - it is the ultimate compromise. It does everything just good enough. And if you put in some extra work and practice, the results are quite astounding.
Thanks for the positive feedback, I'm glad my vids were helpful. Please keep me updated how your journey with the TG-7 goes!

Yet another excellent video: organized, clear, logical, and very helpful! I've had three TG cameras starting with the first TG-1 and now have a TG-6. I sold my TG-4 to a friend who used it on a trip to India specifically because of it's small size and unassuming appearance. He was able to get amazing photos and video with no one noticing him. Thanks for highlighting this often overlooked camera.

Great tips! I'm sure you're aware of the AF Lock feature, but for new users I'll point out that pressing the shutter 1/2 way then pressing the OK button locks the AF at your target. You can then adjust the AF point with the Up/Down buttons on the 4 way controller. Essentially this is a Manual Focus using AF to lock on your distant target and also allows you to adjust the distance.

Although I'm a beginner I think by now I'm informed enough to know that this camera would be a good investment for years to come. But the many options also intimidated me. While I don't get everything you're trying to explain in this video yet, if I just follow your instructions I feel I should be able to get started shooting freely while letting the camera do most of the work for me. Then as time goes on I can always dive deeper into the specifics. I think I'm sold on the TG-7 as my first digital camera now. Thank you very much!

Many thanks for sharing that! The TG-7 is really capable, and I love it to bits. Unfortunately, I do not have a TG-4 to compare it to at the moment, but the 12 MP sensor on the 7 should deliver better low light performance.

Hi Thomas. Thank you for a very helpful video. I am looking forward to using the tg-7 for street photography at the local fruit and vegetable markets (in Cairns, Australia) I usually feel uncomfortable doing this, but I think because the tg-7 is unobtrusive and does not look like a big serious camera, it should be easier to get candid photos of people without upsetting anybody.

I mainly use an x100v but I’ve just bought the TG7 for macro, documenting and street. Very handy video, I love how this camera just makes you want to take it with you everywhere and start shooting. It’s almost a going back to basics camera that makes you think more about composition rather than worrying about settings. I also I love that it might make me be less picky about final image quality and just enjoy shooting again. Thanks again. Would love to see more videos on the TG7. Subbed

Hi Thomas another excellent video. I’ve been using my TG-5 for a few years now as an everywhere pocket carry. Thanks for the extra tips and setting recommendations. Unlike the last comment I cannot use a cell phone for photography, and the TG does many things that no phone can do, Marco photography, rain, extreme cold, underwater and ProCapture just to name a few. I have to update my TG-5 firmware, it’s minor but I cannot set shutter speed. Tschuss from central Georgian Bay, Ontario, Canada.

Thanks for the feedback and for sharing your experiences. As we both know, the TG is far more capable and allows you to do many things not possible with a cellphone.
The Tough series is probably the only real "take everywhere" camera, as it can operate under all circumstances and is small enough to fit in a shirt's pocket. A must have if you can't live without a camera, I'd say. 📸

I was going to ask about battery saving by having the in body stabilization set to Only When Shooting, as opposed to Continuous, but have no idea if these settings are available. Having a number of Canon 310 HS cameras much of this tutorial is like going over my camera, except for being able to set minimum shutter speed and things of that nature. Naturally over time one learns to figure out ways to get things done. Back then the canon didn't have exposure comp for video, but pocket Fujis did. But the Fujis back then didn't have IBIS. I will say with the 8x zoom on the Canon, the IBIS is still very good. And that's amazing for such an old camera. One thing I like to do is set the camera for cloudy days. Interior shots can be improved enormously. Not all of them, but a LOT. But watching this, having the manual focus and peaking is excellent. Looks like Live Composite is a great asset too. Ever think you need a lens hood for it?

The TG6 and 7 are identical sensors and lens. So this video is really helpful for both cameras. I been running maximum ISO at 800 for 2 years on the TG6 doing street photography but will try 6400. I carry a power bank with me and when I not using the TG6 i have it on charge. The TG6 also is the only camera that fits in my Vespa's glovebox and i have a usb port in the vespa. GPS i leave on, it doesn't seem to effect the power much. Olympus cameras are still not supported by Lightroom so i convert raw to jpeg in OM workspace and then finish the edit off in Topaz or Lightroom or Nik effects silver.

Thank you for doing this, Thomas! Most interesting. One feature I always use with my E-M1's is the don't reset lens feature. This means I can pre-focus at between 1m to 2.5m and if I turn the camera off then back on again (to preserve power), that distance is always remembered/recalled. I guess in manual mode on the TG-7 by pre-focussing, the TG-7 remembers the distance set without resetting to infinity? I'm still saving for a TG-7, having just purchased a Ricoh GR3. But I definitely want a TG-7 (or an OM-5. Or both!)

Hello Thomas, Thank you for this video and all the videos on the TG7, it was a decisive factor for me to buy this camera.
I was esitating with the new W90 but for my usage the TG7 is the best.
It's lighter than my Zfc or Fm2n, it is robust I can use it without being worried during hiking.
And I don't care about the resoution of the photos, I am coming from analog (35mm and half frame) and I am not printing larger than 8x10.
I have the feeling that people are searching for a camera the size of the TG7 but with the capability of larger models and are hoping that technology will make them better photographer...
I only wish the TG7 was able to give the idea of the focal lenght when zooming rather than showing a 1.0x but I can survive without that :)

I liked the recommendation to use Program mode with auto ISO. Sometimes you need to know when the camera can do things better than you and allow it to do so. Rather than having an arrogant or snobbish attitude as some people seem to.
As far as the fake shutter sound, I definitely agree with having it off for street photography. But I’d really like to see OM do the same as what Nikon did with the Z8, and allow us to have a shutter sound for electronic shutter. I use the silent mode pretty much all the time and I do miss the sound sometimes.

    • @ThomasEisl.Photography
      @ThomasEisl.Photography  Год назад +1

Many thanks - I completely agree. It takes a while to accept the fact that the camera can do certain things just faster and more convenient. At the end of the day, it is about getting the shot and having fun while doing so.
Regarding the fake shutter sound - yes, it would definitely be a useful addition especially when photographing people. Although Nikon raised a few eyebrows when implementing that, it is actually a sensible feature.

Hello Thomas, I just got your expert guide for TG-7, but honestly I'm a bit disappointed because it is not a guide on how to use the camera and utilize the various shooting modes to get the best results, but more a review of how it does what it does..
I was hoping for a guide aimed for amateurs showing them how to best use it..

    • @ThomasEisl.Photography

Hello Ivan, I'm sorry to read that. The guide is really intended to get the last 10% out of the TG and go beyond what the manual tells you. Maybe the guide does not appear as being very useful at the moment, but I hope that you'll find the information valuable in the future. Feel free to follow up via e-mail, if you'd like. Apologies again that it is not the right publication for your needs. Best, Thomas

Insightful video Thomas. Until I watched this video, I never considered getting a TG-7, mainly because of its small 1/2.3"sensor and my concerns about image quality in less than perfect lighting conditions. What is your opinion on that?
I have a Panasonic LX100 ii for street photography. It's a lovely little camera in many ways, but it's not quite as pocketable nor is it weather resistant.

Hello. I recently discovered your videos on the TG-7 and was tempted to buy this camera. Your videos are very informative. But in detail, I'm having trouble understanding how the camera works, and nothing is explained in the official documentation. For example, why, in A mode, does the aperture change from 2.8 to 8, or from 5.6 to 18 - with no intermediate values? Why, in construction mode (document), is the preview automatically enlarged 2 times, which doesn't allow proper framing of the document to be photographed? Etc. There are many obscure, undocumented points. Couldn't you make a video explaining these modes of operation? Thank you.

I love the jacket Thomas! I have thought abut a TG for a few years but I love my Fuji X30, also good for street and macro - and can't really justify buying another compact. Focus bracketing could sway me ... one day maybe.
For people who suggest a phone instead ... what about the size of the lens? I mean the diameter, not the length. How much light does a phone gather, compared with a quality compact?

      Thank you very much!
I completely agree, comparing the TG with a phone is a bit strange, to say the least. The most impressive feature is that the TG has this focal length range but the lens does not extend when zooming - which is great in practice.
And yes, your X30 is a great camera! Everyone needs at least one compact in their lives.

For those who don't need the waterproof features what would be the reason to choose this camera over the sony zv 1? Sony gives you a hotshoe, a brighter lens at f1.8 wide lens a 1 inch sensor

I had a ZV-1 for a long time, excellent camera.
Some comments why you might want a TG instead: way faster boot up (no lens to extend) which is awesome for street and snaps. Lint-proof lens and therefore truly pocketable.

@@ThomasEisl.Photography I have an old Olympus XZ-1 camera, and I love it. I don't know why they didn't continue this product line beyond the XZ-2. I like the color output it produces. It has a bright 1.8-2.5 lens and a larger CCD sensor than its competitors. It even has sensor-shift stabilization, a hot shoe, and a built-in flash. I think this camera is better than the Sony ZV-1 in every way except for Sony's leading autofocus and video capabilities. But for still picture quality, I think it's better. I really need a modern replacement that is as good as the XZ-1.

When I take a photo, the TG-6 chose shutter 1/8 sec and the image is blurry and out of focus.

      @ThomasEisl.Photography  Год назад +1

Here is the problem: you set an ISO limit which is too low for the camera to maintain the fast shutter speed for the lighting conditions.
Set a higher ISO limit, as the camera will eventually use slower shutter speeds when it can't raise the ISO anymore!
      Hope this helps
More information on the control curves is to be found in the expert guide, btw.

    Hi Thomas,
    Thanks for this brilliant video!!
The Olympus/OM TG series can become great EDC cameras only if they upgrade the sensor to APS-C. Right now the sensor is too small for any serious photography. They also need to upgrade to a faster lens, may be a prime lens actually. The TG series is in the 7th edition and still doesn't have any real updates from the past 2-3 editions.
They should try doing what Ricoh is doing with the GR-iii. Its a brilliant street photography camera.

Hi thomas. I do street photography in vienna myself :) unfortunately I think the tough series really sucks for street photography. dont get me wrong I use olympus cameras for street photography as with m43 sensor you get great dof and its very small but with the tough series one looks like a creep a bit doing street photography. the sensor is small so in low light it gets immediately destroyed and adjusting settings is not as simple as on other cameras. but as an everyday pocket camera the tough series is great. in comparison to griii they are dust proof, have zoom and graeat makro too. I really wish it had at least a 1 inch sensor and video capabilities. if it had a 1 inch sensor, some zoom range and 10bit 4k video in log i think it would sell so crazy you wouldnt be able to buy it :D

Thanks for sharing your opinion on this one! Very much appreciated! I'd like to follow up on this one:
I'd say that in photography, it is important not to fight the tool (like the lack of direct access to some settings) but to use it as intended by the designers - and the TG has for example excellent exposure program automation (so do many Olympus cameras). Very handy for street - more about those in my expert guide.
Regarding Image quality, low light performance - that's of course subjective what you are willing to tolerate, but it also depends on you shooting style (and how low you are willing to go SS wise - I'm used to shoot ISO400 film so I can live with that).
Last but not least, I personally don't worry about how I look during street photog., it is all about getting the shot. I've pulled quite the freak stunts to get the shot in the past haha - so it's already too late for me to care about that.
