I just got the TG-7, admittedly influenced somewhat by your review. I am an experienced photographer, owning several Canon DLSR bodies and a bag full of lenses. I have seen sample photos of this camera before my purchase and a few 'no better than a smartphone' comments. If people use this for snapshots, as most online sample images are, that's all you are going to get out of it. To be honest, I am very impressed with this little camera. Yes 'only' 12MP and yes, no manual exposure, but damn, i took a few photos around my garden and I'd be proud to display many of them. Even with little or no post processing, and even with just the OM Workspace app, I am really happy with the results. Maybe, pixel-peepers are looking at this camera wrong, if you have half an eye for composition, lighting and texture, this little gem can give very impressive results. Thank you for your fine review... Oh, and it's a lot better than using a smartphone...
@@justyoutube5829 OM System Tough TG-7 has a built-in Stereo microphone and a Mono speaker. On the other hand, OM System TG-7 doesn't have any connections for external microphones and headphones. If you need a Compact camera with external microphone connectivity, consider Sony ZV-1 or Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III in a similar price range.
Excellent job, Thomas. A good friend had seen some images from my TG-5 recently and is planning a trip to London with his wife and asked specifically about the TG-7. I recommended this new TG-7 and will forward him the link to your review. I did not get the TG-6, as it was pretty close to my TG-5, but the way I use it for macro and remote work, I think the TG-7 is a worthy update for my use. In the field, as a nature photographer and sometimes sports photographer, I like having a TG mounted on my tele-zoom lens's tripod collar so I can film wide field video while shooting stills/video. It also is a good FOV range between a second OM-1 with 7-14/2.8 and 40-150/2.8 with teleconverter in nature hikes in the mountains where I feel I want the maximum range of FOV but don't want to carry three separate pro level bodies. I still use the TG-Tracker for some action work like white water kayaking, and it's easier to use as an action camera, but it's a bit dated now, in terms of what GoPro has to offer. One place these cameras really shine, though I have limited access from Kansas, is undersea photographer. They really do a great job with color and lighting underwater and they make a great housing for scuba diving that preserves the relative portability.
Thank you very much for your kind, but also very valuable comment. What you described is, in my opinion, an excellent use case for a camera like the TG-7. Unlike action cams, it offers a wider focal length range while at the same time delivering the convenience of an action cam. I would have loved to highlight the capabilities of the TG as an underwater camera, but I have not had the opportunity to test that yet. So I very much appreciate your input on that. Again, thanks for sharing!
Many thanks - it was great to test the camera for them. It really got me out of my comfort zone - shooting with a compact instead of an OM-1 really changed my workflow, in a fun way haha.
I was interested in hearing what you had to say on this camera when I saw you were reviewing it. I knew you’d uncover all the interesting little details that aren’t mentioned by the usual reviewers.
well done Thomas!! as per your usual, the subject is very well dissected, explained, and, most importantly, easily understood. i do hope to see more OM Systems product reviews from you in the future. OM Systems has done well to seek your assistance/expertise.
Many thanks for your exceptionally kind words! It was great testing the camera for them and a quite interesting experience as well - I mean, putting a compact camera through MTF testing and turning up at Vienna Fashion week with a compact raised some eyebrows 😂
Another home run, Thomas. Keep up the good work. If anyone looking to take their game next level, I'd suggest booking time with Thomas on your next trip to Europe.
Many thanks, Bob! I very much appreciate your kind words, it was great working with you and I'm very happy to hear that I was able to provide value for your photographic practice. I hope for another in-person meeting! 📸
Well done Thomas. Thank you yet again for this. The adjustable in-camera TTL flash is what sold it to me. It so good to be able to control the amount of light the camera produces for creativity.
I met some entomologists who said the TG-6 was their favourite pocket camera, mainly due to macro and image stacking. I imagine the TG-7 will be even more popular.
Hi Thomas, thanks for another great video and review. I have the TG-5, you mentioned a few specs; manual focus, power pack charging, and 5-minute movie time, which I was unaware of. I don't think I will upgrade but you have motivated me to use my TG camera more often, especially as a true pocket-able go-everywhere camera. Often mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras and even small Pen cameras are just not convenient to carry. A jeans or vest pocket camera with all of the TG specs is much more fun than any cell phone. Cheers from Ontario, Canada. Thanks.
Great to hear - I completely agree: A fun, truly pocketable and yet capable camera like the TG-7 or your 5 is definitely the photographer's choice (instead of a smartphone).
@@ThomasEisl.Photography I have just ordered one and will likely purchase your guide as well. I have an iPhone 15 Pro but I feel as though this will provide more features especially from a computational viewpoint. Thanks for the professional review!!
@PixelGuy22 great, thanks a million. The TG is definitely more camera than the iphone. It also puts you in a different mindset having a camera instead of a phone, I'd say. Hope you like the camera as much as I do. Best, Thomas 📸
Thanks for sharing - the TG-7 is definitely a huge improvement over any phone when it comes to macro photography. Indeed, it is a professional tool for macro photography and a very capable photo and video companion on top of that.
Thank you for this wonderful, in-depth review! I am looking to have a camera that I can carry all the time, shoot in any conditions and manually control shots at some level. The TG-7 is taking the lead over gear that costs 10x more. The small sensor it a real trade-off, but I really want something that can travel with me at any time, regardless of weather. I think it will really open up my subject options.
Many thanks for your feedback! Be warned, once I started working with a small sensor camera, it became like a challenge to me to maximise the IQ output. Since then, I've done practically everything from ultra-low light to studio shoots with this camera. It is really enticing and the IQ is not a real dealbreaker. Quite the contrary, you start to focus on technique, at least that is my impression.
This is my 3 time watching this video your so informative, I am enjoying my little TG 7 too just had to play with it, thanks for all you do for us photographers
Thank you Thomas. That was an excellent review of the camera. I have a TG6 tough and I have read that they are similar with some missing features that the TG7 tough has.
Many thanks! That could be the case - I unfortunately have not had a TG-6 so I cannot really comment on that but certain key aspects are definitely similar, judging from the spec sheet!
I figured it out. It was very simple once I got it in the right mode for live composite. It’s always easy after I understand it lol Thank you for your help.
As a TG-5 user I’m still pretty happy with it, particularly using the ‘super resolution’ mode in Adobe Camera Raw. But the TG-7 looks very good and I’ve enjoyed the review.
Very good review. The video quality from the hotel lobby and the street revealed that this camera leaves something to be desired compared to more video focused cameras with larger sensors. I love the toughness and the macro capabilities, and the JPEG still pictures are really very good, so RAW should not be needed in most cases.
Thanks! The video is definitely more comparable to smartphone video / Action Cam video, especially under the circumstances I used as demo. If you have good lighting and in more controlled environments like macro video, the quality is very good. Also, by adjusting the contrast, you can get very punchy action footage. Best, Thomas 📸
Thanks for an interesting review. I've been considering upgrading from TG-4 for a while, but image quality was a weak point with the TG-4 and with the same lens I've been reluctant. Tested the TG-4 against an old 8MP superzoom and real resolution of the 8MP camera was at least as good/slightly better than the TG-4 and blown highlights were a problem in contrasty scenes. TG-5 got upgraded with a 12MP sensor which is supposed to be better than the 16MP in the TG-4 and lens coatings are also supposed to be improved but wasn't sure if that was enough to justify an upgrade. Of course, there are lots of other improvements I'd like too. 4K video, better time-lapse function and several of the functions inherited form the OM-system and the USB-C on the latest model. I have the filter adapter/ring for the TG-4 and that's a really useful feature IMO. It came with a lens cap making it much easier to keep the front protective glass clean. I also have the TC which do what it's supposed to, but for me it has been of very limited use. Not enough extra reach and only usable at full tele. One thing I missed on the TG-4 was auto bracketing which would helped a lot for DR-problems. Cant find it in the specs for TG-7 and you don't mention it in the video (or I missed it) except for the HDR-function which is not what I'm looking for. Could you comment? Another question is the available apertures. The TG-4 had only two + a build in ND-filter that simulated a third (very useful btw). Still the same on TG-7?
Many thanks for your extensive and valuable comment! Regarding Auto-Bracketing: There is none, unfortunately. What I did was utilizing the exposure compensation and create HDR composites in post. Of course, this is only a workaround, but a passable one I'd say. Regarding apertures: The aperture mechanism is still the same on the TG-7, at least it operates exactly as you described the one in the TG-4. I don't have a TG-4 to test that, tough, but really, it sounds very similar! I'd like to comment on what you discovered when testing the old superzoom. Some superzoom lenses are very good at certain focal lengths (although physically a lot bigger than the tg-7's lens). So if the 8MP are "resolved" fine by the lens and if the AA filter is not too strong, the performance of these cameras holds up very well even today against modern cameras like the 7. So as long as you know what you are doing regarding exposure - and I'm sure you do judging from your comment - the difference in IQ between those old cameras and newer models might be insignificant. Hope this helps!
Thank you for the reply. Agree that exposure compensation is an easy way to do bracketing fairly fast, but what I'd really like is just turning autobracketing on more or less permanently. That way I'd always be able to do an HDR-merge if necessary. Auto bracketing would also maximize the chance of the images being similar enough that a merge is possible. It's weird that OM Systems don't include bracketing on the TG - alle the necessary functionality is there, it just the auto part that's missing. My workaround is a Sony RX100 but a RX100 can't go where a TG can.
Working distance is a big factor. Our butterflies and insects are a bit more sensitive. I can’t imagine being 10cm away. Fungi, flowers etc etc, anything that is still. Thank for your reply. I’ll think about it some more. Happy Easter.
Happy Easter as well! I mean there are certain tricks to increase working distance, for example adding the TCON-01. But nothing beats the 90mm pro in that regard.
It has a load of little nugents my em10 doesn't, like charging while shooting and procapture. Also good to see the use of usb-c vs om5. All suggests om systems are really getting their house in order. Can't wait to see the next wave of mkii releases over the coming years.
Yes, I think this camera is really quite something. It does not look like much at first glance, but as you've stated: there are a lot of sensible design choices making it more than the sum of its parts.
Thanks for the feedback! I personally never had a TG-6, so I cannot really make a comparison except looking at the spec sheet, unfortunately. As outdoor cameras tend to "wear out" after extreme use, I think when that happens it might be the best time to get the TG-7.
Ordered mine on Friday. I spent the summer in Sicily and decided then that one would be really handy as I saw some shots that I couldn't take with my EM-1 (i.e. in the sea). I was going to get the TG-6 as I saw it at a good price, but kept putting it off, then the TG-7 was announced and I finally took the dive (so to speak) and ordered my first OM System branded camera. I'm not a fan of using a phone to take photos, except as an aide memoire, and this is going to be the perfect thing to take with me everywhere without being weighed down by the EM-1 and lenses, or attracting attention. To me the red is also a bonus because it makes it look more of a "toy" camera rather than a highly capable, quality, all-round point and shoot that will also be fun to use. A case and LED adapter have already arrived so hopefully the camera will be here soon.
Thanks for sharing - I hope you will enjoy the TG-7 as much as I do. I'm completely on the same page regarding the cell phone. Although those phones are really good, I just don't like how they handle. It is not the same. I also think that red is a good choice, for the same reasons you mentioned. Which case did you get? The OEM case or a different one?
I am using the TG-5 while running and cycling. I am satisfied, because of the great AF and the easy menu. I only wish the sensor was bigger. Even the new DJI Osmo Action 5 has a bigger sensor. So, is the TG-7 a better camera than the 5?
Bravo Thomas! I use my TG-5 for underwater activity, and it is fantastic as compared to the old, and heavy, and big underwater case built by an artisan in Torino, containing an Olympus Camedia inside. You rekindle me to use it. I immediately bought your expert guide. Sergio from Milano
Thank you very much Sergio, also for your purchase! The TG-5 is an excellent tool and I hope the expert guide will be useful. I've just sent you a link to the latest version of the guide, hope you'll like it!
Thomas, I can wait. You must focus on what is your business that pays the bills. I can wait. It will be on sale again. I would not want an Easter bride sending me hate mail 😉
If this lens is unchanged from the TG-5, prospective buyers should know that, at f/2, there is significant softness in the corners at the wide angle end of the zoom range. There is one physical stop-down to f 2.8 which does improve this problem somewhat. At the other end of the zoom range, the image is unacceptably soft and low contrast whether wide open or stopped down. Stay in the full frame equivalent 35-75mm range for best results. I wouldn't be without this camera at the beach and on on hikes. Controls are far above those available in a phone camera, macro capabilities are exceptional, and the fisheye conversion lens is a blast. But, be advised: the resolution and color rendition are noticeably inferior to those of current iPhone cameras.
Many thanks for sharing your experiences, I'm sure that they are of great value for prospective buyers. I'd like to add that the image processing in the TG-7 delivers excellent results, maybe it was improved compared to the TG-5. Color rendition is excellent, noise is well controlled. Thanks for your contribution!
There are sone details you mentioned that I never knew about when I owned the TG 5 and 6. I guess I didn't do my homework! I sold the TG 6 because it was a distraction. I enjoyed playing with it, even though I should have been using my bigger cameras. Well, I just sold off my M4/3 equipment today, and I have some money coming in. Should I buy the TG7??? I'm thinking about it!
Thanks for sharing! Well, why not! I really like mine, and yes, I also can't put it away because it is just so fun and capable (and incredibly small). Let me know if you got one!
Hi Thomas, you may recall that I am interested to get into nature macro along with wildlife (birds) from a recent video. I have the OM-1 and the 300 pro f4, OM100-400 and the x1.4 tc. I was looking at down the track maybe getting the 90mm macro. Apart from price, one body, multiple lenses become a bit of a pain. I have been watching several videos on the TG-7 and it now happens to be on a good price special locally. It gets pretty good reviews as a macro camera and would also give the versatility of a second body and other options when out shooting. As I never plan to enter competitions or sell photos, the TG-7 certainly offers a lot more than my Nikon Z50 with a couple of kit lens. To buy a macro Nikon lens for the Z50 it is probably the same price as a TG-7. You seemed to also praise the lens for macro. As far as accessories are concerned I would probably start with the diffuser and maybe the ring light (I watched your video). Does my logic hold up? I would keep the Z50 and lenses as a travel camera at this stage I think as I have a FTZ adaptor and a Tamron 100-400 lenses for wildlife. What do you think? If you agree I can then convince my wife and tell her you told me to get it. 😉 Thanks.
Hey Tony, that is a very interesting consideration. So first and foremost - the TG is indeed a very capable macro camera, even ultra-macro camera. The only thing to consider is the working distance - of course with a 90mm Zuiko Pro you can stand further back which might be relevant for some subjects. Here is why I recommend a TG in any case - it is a very versatile camera, excellent for macro and always nice to work with, regardless of what else you have. Taking your holiday example, just think about that. When you go out in the evening, you can just drop the TG in your jacket and snap some pics at the dinner, for example. There is a lot to this camera.
Regarding the Z50 - that should definitely work. But as you've already got an OM-1, why not get an inexpensive, lightweight long range zoom, even an Four Thirds zoom. The OM is really tailor made for wildlife. So the Z50 is of course a good camera as well, but I just wanted to give you this idea as well, as there are so many excellent, lightweight travel lenses for your OM as well. In any case, if your Z is already good to go, just try how much you like it. You can always make a purchase later on. With the TG in your bag as well, you sure can cover everything! Was I able to help?
Excellent guide! Would you recommend this for a beginner who wants to learn photography, but is looking for an all-rounder camera for travel and vacation photos (including underwater shots, landscapes, and portraits)?
Yes, absolutely. It really is the perfect first camera and even if one gets a camera with interchangeable lenses later, the TG won't become obsolete as it remains a very valuable tool for extreme environments.
I had the TG-6 but I wasn't very happy with it. Yes I know "the category leader" I had too much money sitting in it and the feature I needed for was little short cut. 4K video length was limited for only 5 minutes. What? This one looks pretty much the same. Great detailed review thanks for sharing.👍 Oh one more little thing I don't really like the new name: OM System, but this is just maybe me.
Thank you very much for sharing! After my tests, I'm pretty sure that the recording limit is at least partially entwined with heat management. The TG-7 and the predecessors are not without compromises, but they are excellent for what they are. Completely agree!
Hi Thomas, could you do another video on street photography with the TG-7? I'm already an E-M1 fanatic, but I also own a Ricoh GRD4 which I simply love. I have been wondering whether or not to get a GR3 or the TG-7. The GR3 of course has an APS-C sensor so print sizes can be much bigger than 10x8, but the GRD4 is also capable of superb results due to its CCD sensor. I'd be really interested how the TG-7 performs not only with resolution from its sensor and making bigger prints, but also and this is how I use my E-M1 and GRD4, setting the cameras for hyperfocal distance focussing. Is the TG-7 capable of doing the same thing? ie Is the TG-7 as fast on the street as the GR and the E-M1? I really need to see some examples! Fantastic video btw. Thanks for producing it!
Hello there! Thanks for the comment and the interesting questions. Regarding print quality: While not at E-M1 quality, you can definitely expect good quality prints from the TG-7. 8x10 is not really the limit, but the size at which you will get best possible quality. I've shot quite a bit of street photography, which I will soon share on my Insta: thomaseisl.reportage -- Follow me there to take a peek. You can set a manual focusing distance and while there is no zone focus indicator, due to the wide depth of field, you can still set it up quite easily using focus peaking. I try making a video about the TG-7 for street photography! There is a lot to say about it in that regard. Compared to your setup, I'd say the biggest advantage the 7 will give you is that it is much smaller, offers a wider range of focal lengths and looks almost like a toy camera. In terms of focusing, I'd say it is definitely on par with the Ricoh, most likely better, but not as good as the E-M1, especially when it comes to moving subjects. However, for street, it is perfect and I never had any issues when it comes to the AF. Hope I was able to help! Did I answer everyting?
Thanks for the great review. I have the TG-5 and am trying to figure out what improvements have been made in the TG-7. I will be leaving for the Galapagos in mid-Nov, and plan on using a TG while snorkeling. I already bought a bracket and 2 LCD lights on arms. Thanks in advance.
Most welcome! I cannot give you a comprehensive list, as I don't have a 5 to compare my 7 to, but apart from software improvements I'd say that added support for the RM-WR1 is an important upgrade, as well as the ability to use the ultra macro AF in A mode and P mode (I think this is not possible with the 5). There might be changes in the menu and in terms of possible settings, best If you download the TG-7 manual and check with the 5 in hand. If need a backup camera for your trip, I'd certainly get the 7 for that.
Just got my TG-7 with a guide light and a silicone jacket. I picked red. I'm usually a black camera guy. The macro capabilities are very fun! This will be a camera that I everyday carry.
Great choice - the TG looks gorgeous in red. The TG is also my "daily carry" - it is just perfect for that. Now I have to watch my spending habits as I'm about to get every accessory possible for it haha 😆
Yes, that would be nice - but believe me, it is already very cool even though it has no viewfinder. Once you are used to it, it is awesome - and a very casual shooting experience - with high fidelity results
Great review. Just a small wording correction. At 6:56 you mention its sensor size to be “one and a half point three inch” - written as “1/2.3 Inch”. While the sensor size spec has always been confusing to people because it appears to mix a fraction with decimal notation, it is in fact meant as 1 / (2.3). This would be pronounced “one over two-point-three inch”.
The biggest advantage compared to a GoPro is the camera-like control scheme as well as the excellent zoom lens. If you want something that is a good photo tool as well, I'd go with the 7. Compared to the 4, the sensor is better for low light but has a little bit less resolution (negligible in practice). And of course, the 7 outperforms the 4 in terms of computing power/operating speed and features. Hope this helps
After watching your review, I went out and bought a TG-7. I’m shooting timelapses and need a small camera that can stay plugged into a power source. I'm wondering why the "Olympus AC-5 AC Adapter" costs over $100. Can you recommend other reliable power source adapters that are more economical? Any links would be fantastic! Thank you for your very informative and clear videos!
Hi Thomas! Great and in-depth review. Would you say the tg-7 would be a sufficient camera for light painting, fire works and street photography of car trails? I’m thinking of getting a OM Sytems camera mainly for the Live composite feature.
Many thanks! I'd say yes - in fact, this is exactly what I'm doing with this camera - pretty much every day. I even photographed star trails in the city with the TG's live comp. What I really like is that all the functions are there, but simpler/more automated than in the pro models. So if you are just starting out with OM System, this is probably the perfect one to "dip your toes into the water". And if you like the features but want more configurability / IQ at the cost of size and weight you can get a pro model and keep the Tough, because it can do things the big boys can't - like going underwater without a housing. I'm pretty sure you won't regret the purchase - everyone needs a small, capable digicam in their lives, I'd say. Feel free to ask if you want to know something specific.
Thank you! You can definitely photograph star trails with the TG-7 using Live Composite. For high end astro photography, I would recommend an OM-1 or an OM-5 instead, as you just have more lens options, better handling and better image quality with those.
I always enjoy your videos Thomas. I'm tempted by this camera. My only issue is I can't see any difference between the TG-7 and the TG-6, except for the usbc charging port. Other than that, the hardware specs look the same. Maybe I'm missing something like some software benefits. So I don't know which one to buy. On the plus side, I think this may take the same battery as my Ricoh GR! The GPS looks great. I wish OMD had put this in their flagship.
I own a TG-6, the difference is minor. You can still buy one new and save a few bucks, but I’d suggest just going with the TG-7. The cost is very reasonable.
Well, hardware-wise (except the grip and USB C) it is very similar, it seems. And both are definitely good cameras. Personally, I would go with the 7 bc of the the grip, the USB port as well as other features like: vertical video, the possibility to connect the RM-WR1, and the interval shooting options. But that's just me - TOUGH decision haha Many thanks for your kind feedback and comment!
I’ve had the TG-3, 4, and 5. I skipped the 6, is the 7 a worthy upgrade do you think? I love your tip on setting the minimum shutter speed. I’ve always missed not having a “S” or “M” mode to be able to set a specific shutter speed. At lease this way I can set it for a minimum.
Thanks Larry! Regarding the buying decision: Hard to say, maybe my full review can help you regarding this decision: ruclips.net/video/ZOmk5WFdf9c/видео.htmlsi=theGOKQCMLICbil5 Also, I'll continue to produce additional videos on the TG-7, which might be helpful in that regard.
Many thanks for the review Thomas. I currently travel extensively throughout Canada and the US via 2 wheels. Would this camera be suitable for taking landscape shots while in motion (riding)? I generally hold up the camera and just shoot... without looking of course and most of the time I get my shot. I currently have the Canon SX740HS but the shutter sticks, there is dirt on the inside and of course its not waterproof, this is my 2nd with the same issues and I cant keep replacing every 2 years
Most welcome. Of course you can do that, I think it is an excellent tool for that purpose, even though I would recommend stopping or at least slowing down to get the best possible image quality (but that is regardless of camera). Best, Thomas 📸
Previous versions of this camera had access to a program called a-gps. This program could be used from a computer or a cell and would then download a small file that could be transfered to the camera. Once this was done the camera GPS would find the exact location very fast, usually with 10 to 30 seconds of the camera being turned on. This lasted two weeks, after which time the data file needed to be updated. Without an up-to-date version of a-gps the camera can find the location, but this is painful, typically a few minutes. The web site where you went to update a-gps was unfortunately shut-down by OM Systems last summer (July 2023), so this no longer work. (You can also use your cell gps, but that require to have the wifi open both on the cell and the camera, with the power drain that represents. Not practical if you're in a remote location without possibility of recharging.) Have you tried using the gps of the TG-7 alone (without a cell)? How fast is it?
Thanks for the question! Good news: I found it relatively fast without A-GPS data, and you can still update A GPS via OM Workspace. Just did that and it works!
I'm an Olympus user with the flagship camera's and lenses to boot and am in the market for an action camera to go with me on my recumbent bicycle. The battle of the action cameras is where the TG-7 has a comparative advantage for me as its a menu system I am familiar with although it can't do the 360 or fit on my helmet and other quirky zones I may desire. So if I could only choose one I'd need to know the TG-7 is going to give me value for money where value is a property of potential use, and there lies the dilemma.
@@ThomasEisl.Photography Sounds familiar by token of following the path of least resistance. One caveat…dilemma hence if I could only buy one I could borrow another to get the perspectives I wanted to emulate the sense of place.
@@ThomasEisl.Photography I'm using the term dilemma as in a classic contradiction. A not B as logical form: camera A has properties like pro capture and robustness whilst camera B does not have A's properties but the properties of clever mounts for ease of attachment to helmet that is not a property of camera A.
@italogiardina8183 ahhh, yes that is true, now I follow. Just a thought, isn't there a helmet mount with a tripod screw connection? You could use that to mount the TG-7, right?
Thanks Thomas, I really like this TG-7 and I am thinking of getting it. I have a full frame Sony A7 which I use with a long lens for sports etc. Last year I got a APS-C Fujifilm camera which I use for a daily carry in better weather, though I need a small shoulder bag for it. With the TG-7 I should be able to fit it in a pocket, and as I live by the sea not worry about spray. I was just wondering with the smaller sensor of the TG-7 and the protective glass on the lens , would the images be of a good resolution?.
Thanks for the comment and thanks for asking. First, I'd say that the TG is perfect for what you intend using it. There is no better option in my opinion. Second, the IQ is of course not up to your A7, but it is very good, especially if you have some photo skills. Take a look at my Instagram, there are quite some photos of models taken with the TG. Don't worry about the protective glass, it is of very high optical quality. 8x10 is no issue with the TG / and web use is also not an issue, of course. Hope this helps! Best, Thomas
VERY comprehensive review - as can be expected from viewers who got to know you. Thank you. I've been owning a TG-5 for a while now. And to me it looks like both the TG-6 and the TG-7 are essentially the same camera. Same body. Same lens. Same sensor. Same shutter. Mostly the same features. I can highly recommend the TG-5 - there is no other compact camera system like the TG line that you can take EVERYWHERE. If you can find a used TG-5 or TG-6 at a discount, you really don't have to buy the TG-7. Got for the TG-7 if you want a brand new camera (old) camera with warranty.
I have spent time with the TG6 this year and was impressed with its underwater performance while travelling. I’ve checked comparison sites and can not see a difference in the specs? I can only assume there is a software improvement with the TG7?
Unfortunately, I cannot do a side by side comparison as I don't have the 6. What I can definitely say is that the grip was redesigned and software improvements, as you mentioned.
Thank you - glad it was helpful! The TG-7 is a sensible choice if you want a go-everywhere digital with lots of features and solid performance! Love mine
Many thanks! And congratulations on your purchase - I hope you'll like the camera as much as I do! The expert guide will receive a huge update very soon - which you will get even if you purchase right now, of course.
Hello Thomas, due to a camera shortage and various tiktok trends digital cameras are all sold out in the USA. The TG-7 is available (probably as it "doesn't look cute"), would you say its a good alternative to a Canon GX7 Mark 3 ? Best, Johannes
Hello Johannes, The TG is, to a degree, a different camera than the Canon. In my opinion, it is an excellent alternative as it allows you to do things not possible with other compact cameras. It produces a unique look, is indestructible and a macro specialist as a bonus. However, the G7X is trimmed towards high image quality and the extending lens is optically an advantage over the TG-7. Personally, I would not mind that, but I just wanted to note that. The TG is the best go everywhere companion and therefore my personal choice when it comes to compact cameras. Hope this helps!
Great job,I'm all new to a camera that you need to set up, I mean that you can set up. With your video it was a piece of cake. Excellent job, I've signed up . ? can this camera shot Black & White. It seems to do a lot already,
Thank you very much! Yes, the camera has a few dedicated black and white image settings, even to simulate BW films. Very versatile and capable tool indeed.
Thanks for the detailed, great video (again). 👍 Can you recommend any software to edit TG-7 RAW files? What I've tried so far: Luminar AI 1.5.5, Luminar NEO 1.14.1, DxO PL 7.0.2, ON1 Photo RAW 2023.5. MacOS, IOS. None of them handle it, not even OM Workspace 2.2.2. This is quite annoying. Any ideas?
Thank you very much for the kind feedback! I've edited my TG-7 RAWs in Workspace - it worked perfectly. Maybe you can double check, it is strange that it does not work for you? Third party software is not yet supporting the camera, except Affinity Photo.
You're right. Triple checked it :) Not the latest version was installed. I updated OM Workspace and it works now. But "AI Noise Reduction" doesn't work. Could there be some other reason for this? By the way, I just bought your "TG-7 Expert Guide" to have something to read until 3rd party softwares can handle TG-7 RAW files. :)
Many thanks for the purchase, I hope you like it, feedback is very welcome via email! And great to hear that RAW processing works now. Bad news regarding the AI NR: There is no algorithm for the TG-7. Personal recommendation though: I would embrace the slightly grainy look, as luminance noise is surpressed, it looks like film grain and you get a very unique TG-7 look, personally, I love it, but it is a matter of taste of course. Best wishes and thanks again!
Thank you, Thomas. You are an excellent teacher. It seems that your tripod has a clamp on for the TG-7? It seems to be a quick release. Is that feature incorporated in the tripod?
Yes! There is a dedicated menu option to remote control OM System flashes optically. Alternatively, you can trigger flashes with the built in flash as usual, if available. Best, Thomas 📸
There was an Olympus TG-6 and an OM System TG-7. There is no Olympus TG-6. So if you get a 7, you have the latest model. Maybe the store listed the item wrongly.
I owned tg1 3 4 and 5. The main specs of tg7 are the same since my tg5 2017. You can’t compare the video at all with go pro. Unfortunately the codec is not very good. I expected something more after so many years in order to upgrade. No improvements in image quality and video. I wished for a larger sensor maybe 1/1.7 and better video but instead we got a higher price 😅
I have to admit I have not owned the models you had in the past, I can only compare spec sheets, which is not sufficient for giving advice on whether to upgrade or not. So your assessment is very interesting! The downside of a larger sensor would have been a larger camera or reduced focal length range / f-stop. No free lunch, unfortunately. Regarding the GoPro: For me, it is the lens and the controls what makes the TG-7 more versatile. Bonus: To my surprise, the 4k output was quite impressive. With the old trick of using the "flat profile" (muted -2/-2), it even takes grading pretty well. You should try that with your TG5 as well.
Apart from grading an action camera is important to have 4k60p to capture action more fluid. 30p is not enough. I really want tough cameras to improve in video and replace go pro but the video specs are the same since 2017.
Now what color? Red looks great, but it brings attention. Maybe you don't want to be noticed. However, if you drop it in the wild, you might not find it if it is black.
TOUGH decision (lol). I've done quite some street photography with it (soon on my Insta thomaseisl.reportage), and I was a bit worried about the color of it as well. But interestingly, people did not "take the camera seriously", at least that is my guess why no one seemed to care. But the black one is nice as well. Decisions, decisions. I know.
Thanks for the review. 08:28 "prints up to a picture height (?) of 15 inch" -- is that the longer side? That would be about A3 size. PS your English (including pronunciation) is really good, but "height" is pronounced very differently to here
Thanks for the question - that is actually the short side - so in case of the 8x10 inch print, it is 8 inch and in case of the lower resolution, it is 15 inch short side. Also thanks for the hint regarding "height" - I wonder how I did not notice that haha. Anyway, next time :-)
I got a chart off some photography site that says 11"x 14" for 12Mpx would result as "perfect", and 20" x 30" as "good". I also read that computer screen or T.V. requires very good quality photos to get a good rendition. Print would be a lot less demanding. Of course, we are not pixel peepers in this discussion.
I fear it has the same ghosting issue that the previous folded lens models have, even without the sun in the scene there is a light hotspot only in the centre of frame. Its like a light leak, lacking contrast and shifting colours. in every situation, including underwater.
What I can tell from very extensive, daily use and testing is that I have not seen anything like that at all. Another viewer sent me a message about a purple blob in the frame, which he said was an issue for some photographers, but again, I have not seen anything like it. If the sun is in the scene, there can be lens flares, but they appear based on the sun's position, not always in the center. I assume that the issue was corrected or was the result of a faulty unit.
I took hundreds of thousands of pics (mostly macro) on a TG-6 before loosing it. It had an horrific "purple spot" problem. I now have a TG-7 which seems to have it too. I only bought the TG-7 because I have the underwater case for it already.
Maybe a little addition to my previous reply: There can be a center flare in backlit situations, but I was never able to get the lens to flare under normal circumstances. Note that light can reflect into the lens system as well coming from other angles. Using the CLA-T01 as a lens hood resolves this issue.
How can you be happy with this new camera (unchanged from the last two models -5 and -6) when the price went up while the wall connector previously included is no longer? Besides this, your review aligns with my experience with TG-5 model. You fail to inform us regarding the "purple blob" from previous models. Is it gone or you luckily did not encounter the problem? I did notice it on my older TG-5 on some occasions (looking somewhat towards the light source when certain zoom values are used). That blob is very annoying for any serious photographer, even if amateur, because it kind of ruins the beauty of a shot when it decides to show up. Very different from flares (that some people enjoy, sometimes). Regards.
Hello there! I'm reviewing the camera, not it's price. Price is very subjective and therefore deliberately excluded from the review. Just a remake: Keep in mind that just because the same parts are used they did not necessarily get cheaper for the manufacturer. Take the new Leica M6 for example and the recent inflation. I've never encountered a purple blob, although I tested it really extensively. I'm quite sure though that you are mentioning the round center reflection that you get in some extreme situations. (Look at my digicam shots, I used that as a creative element on purpose). Due to the lens's design, it looks different to what you are used to, but technically it is just a lens flare. You can avoid it by brightening the foreground with the flash, just as a tip. Maybe you can send me an example via social or email. Thanks for your comment!
Very interesting. The camera is obviously somewhat of a a mixed bag. Some unique features, some compromises, a few things missing. Definitely a very usable piece of hi-quality, rugged, out-door equipment. If somebody is kind enough to donate me 500 bucks I will buy one immediately! 😁
@@ThomasEisl.Photographyso, just a waste of money if you already have the original tg-6? All it does better, is going deeper. Even though no normal person swims at 15m depth. I really hate the fact that they ignore users and didn't give it manual mode. But still wants to charge 200$ more than the original tg-6.
I'm not sure where you are going with this, but if you are struggling with the controls of your TG-6 (bc there is no manual mode for example), I recommend my expert guide. I have quite a few very powerful tips in there how to use it in quasi-manual mode.
@@ThomasEisl.Photographywell, I like natural colors. Being able to control shutter and aperture. Especially for astro/aurora timelapses. Instead of vivid colors, as the scenes are set to be. I also shoot in Adobe color grading, instead of s-rgb. Sadly I can't use the tough camera as second one for astrophotography.
I understand! Well, yes - the TG is not the right camera for full manual Intervention. One tip regarding the colors from my expert guide: when you record raw during live composite, you can override the vivid picture profile that is the default in post production. This also works with the previous models, according to my knowledge. Thanks for the conversation!
I had TG series for many years.. i actually used it for professional wedding sessions. I really liked using it as B role with GH5 that time for out door in day light. It been 4 years. Olympus or Om didn’t change much from previous version like sensor size. I gave example iPhone or DJI action 4 produced better closer to 1 inch sensor. I was hoping new TG series make it something different but they just changed the name brand OM from Olympus. That’s all not much improvements. Don’t get me wrong it’s still great camera but nothing newer impressive improvements. But i really enjoyed watching this review.. very well done!!!
@IrfanKhokharFilms Thanks for sharing and elaborating your point. I very much appreciate that! Also, again, thanks for the feedback. If you ever have the chance to try the 4k of the TG-7, it is pretty good. I was surprised, I assume they improved the processing.
Yes, exactly! More than enough - I would have prefered even less, maybe 10 MP. Resolution is a marketing gimmick, at least at a certain point. As I've mentioned regarding the print size, resolution does not limit it.

Thanks so much for this great contribution!
can it support an external microphone? lead or Bluetooth? thanks
Great video, but it’s your comment that really sealed the deal for me. Purchased one just moments ago. Hope I love it!
Congratulations Thomas on finally OM Systems recognizing your talent. Good for you.
That is great to hear, many thanks! If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask anytime. Cheers
well done Thomas!! as per your usual, the subject is very well dissected, explained, and, most importantly, easily understood. i do hope to see more OM Systems product reviews from you in the future.
Excellent review. Concise and to the point. All relevant information and considerate opinion. Thank you.
Thank you very much!
My pleasure! Completely agree, that is a huge benefit. The TG is a great investment, I hope you'll like it as much as I do!
That's a great review, Thomas !
I found from your video much more than I found anywhere else.
Great to hear, thanks for the feedback!
I met some entomologists who said the TG-6 was their favourite pocket camera, mainly due to macro and image stacking. I imagine the TG-7 will be even more popular.
I think so as well - it is a specialist's tool but also a great general photographic companion.
I remember when I had my TG5 the close up images and micro shots were so good and much better than my phone. I'm considering buying this
Thanks for sharing - the TG-7 is definitely a huge improvement over any phone when it comes to macro photography.
Thank you!
I know exactly what you mean, the TG-7 is really great, I also obsess over this camera. Love it to bits!
It seems almost identical
This is the best review I ever see. Great pack of information. Good gob. Thanks
Thank you very much, I very much appreciate your feedback. Best, Thomas 📸
I figured it out. It was very simple once I got it in the right mode for live composite. It’s always easy after I understand it lol Thank you for your help.
Great - so you got live comp up and running?
As a TG-5 user I’m still pretty happy with it, particularly using the ‘super resolution’ mode in Adobe Camera Raw. But the TG-7 looks very good and I’ve enjoyed the review.
Great to hear!
Thanks for your informative video. I have the TG6 and there probably isn't enough here in terms of additional features to justify upgrading
Thanks for the feedback!
I personally never had a TG-6, so I cannot really make a comparison except looking at the spec sheet, unfortunately. As outdoor cameras tend to "wear out" after extreme use, I think when that happens it might be the best time to get the TG-7.

Thanks for this review, i been considering this camera for a long time. Well done!
Great to hear! Thanks!
It was an Olympus one. They were having a clearance on the Adventure case for £1! It was too good a bargain to resist.
@chrispatmore8944 ah yes, I missed that one unfortunately. A no-brainer.
Hi Sergio, would you mind commenting on my question to Thomas. The sale ends on the 31-3-2024. I guess Thomas is busy with Easter weddings. Cheers.
That is true, but I'm getting back to you immediately tony!
Thomas, I can wait. You must focus on what is your business that pays the bills. I can wait. It will be on sale again. I would not want an Easter bride sending me hate mail 😉
@tonyblake8841 no, you deserve a timely reply. It was my bad, friend. I've already replied, let me know if I was able to help!
Outstanding review !!!
Thank you for sharing & keep up the great work! 😊
Thank you very much!
Fantastic!!!
Thank you for putting this together.
Thank you very much!
Hi Thomas great review. Quick question is it possible to smack a small ND filter on the tg-7 to achieve long exposure shots not done with live comp?
Thanks!
Yes it is, you just need the CLA-T01 adapter and then you can use any 40.5mm filters you like. I do that a lot, works like a charm
You put a viewfinder on that thing, an you would one Heck of great camera!
Thank you very much for the feedback and for pointing out the slip of tongue, which unfortunately made it past the editing room!
I need this camera for surfing, snokerling, fishing, and hiking.
It is perfect for that!
The camera comes with the wort manual ever! I really need step by step instruction on this camera, which no one on eYou Tube does ( PLEASE!)
Hello. Thanks for the review. How does this compare with a GoPro ? Also, what are the upgrades over the TG-6 and 4 ?
The biggest advantage compared to a GoPro is the camera-like control scheme as well as the excellent zoom lens. If you want something that is a good photo tool as well, I'd go with the 7. Compared to the 4, the sensor is better for low light but has a little bit less resolution (negligible in practice). And of course, the 7 outperforms the 4 in terms of computing power/operating speed and features. Hope this helps
@@ThomasEisl.Photography Cool. Thanks for taking time to reply. Apreciate it ✌
After watching your review, I went out and bought a TG-7.
For the TG-7, you do not need the AC-5 - just use the supplied USB-C cable, plug it in to any charger and you are good to go! Hope this helps!
Been waiting for this!!!
😊😊
Thanks! I hope I was able to deliver.
Your videos are very helpful. How well and if so easy does the TG7 do with astrophotography?
@@bobabelaDo you know what the differences are because I don't see them.
But that's just me - TOUGH decision haha
Many thanks for your kind feedback and comment!
I believe that just the 7 has Bluetooth?
I had a feeling you are from Vienna! xD First time watching, nice channel and videos.
Hehe, thank you very much!
Regarding the buying decision: Hard to say, maybe my full review can help you regarding this decision:
ruclips.net/video/ZOmk5WFdf9c/видео.htmlsi=theGOKQCMLICbil5
Also, I'll continue to produce additional videos on the TG-7, which might be helpful in that regard.
That image stabaliosation is certainly better than on the TG4 that I have
Thanks for sharing that! Best, Thomas 📸
Hola Tomás. Juan from Mexico City. Really like your videos on tg7. One question is how do I get the pw motion?
Hi Juan! I'm not sure what you mean by PW motion. could you use another term? Best, Thomas
Are the pictures better than the iPhone? Im looking for a point and shoot camera that is better than my iPhone. Thanks!
Not practical if you're in a remote location without possibility of recharging.)
Have you tried using the gps of the TG-7 alone (without a cell)? How fast is it?
Thanks for the question!
Good news: I found it relatively fast without A-GPS data, and you can still update A GPS via OM Workspace. Just did that and it works!
that ring light is so clever
I'm an Olympus user with the flagship camera's and lenses to boot and am in the market for an action camera to go with me on my recumbent bicycle. The battle of the action cameras is where the TG-7 has a comparative advantage for me as its a menu system I am familiar with although it can't do the 360 or fit on my helmet and other quirky zones I may desire. So if I could only choose one I'd need to know the TG-7 is going to give me value for money where value is a property of potential use, and there lies the dilemma.
I'd say the TG sounds like the right camera for you. Love to work with mine, it is excellent. Best, Thomas
@@ThomasEisl.Photography Sounds familiar by token of following the path of least resistance. One caveat…dilemma hence if I could only buy one I could borrow another to get the perspectives I wanted to emulate the sense of place.
@italogiardina8183 oh no, which dilemma exactly?
@@ThomasEisl.Photography I'm using the term dilemma as in a classic contradiction. A not B as logical form: camera A has properties like pro capture and robustness whilst camera B does not have A's properties but the properties of clever mounts for ease of attachment to helmet that is not a property of camera A.
@italogiardina8183 ahhh, yes that is true, now I follow. Just a thought, isn't there a helmet mount with a tripod screw connection? You could use that to mount the TG-7, right?
Hey Thomas does your full disclosure book include how to put the TG 7 into live com?
I've got your message that you've figured it out! Great to hear
Very intelligent presentation.
Thank you very much!
Thanks for answering Thomas, much appreciated, look forward to checking out your Instagram 🙂
@ScrappyPoontachat most welcome, sorry for the delay !
Thank you very much for the kind feedback and for sharing your recommendations!
Thanks for all the infos, just got my TG7. What would you recommend to set the noise reduction to?
Cool. Either Off or Low - more details are available in the Expert Guide, if you are interested.
Can I use my cellphone to take a picture?
Just ordered my TG-7 as it's become available again. Using it, not saving it for a rainy day .
Super cool!
Great review. I'm going to get one.
Many thanks for the feedback.
I hope you will like the TG-7 as much as I do and it will serve you well!
Great review as I was looking to replace my 14 year old digital camera, thanks
Thank you - glad it was helpful! The TG-7 is a sensible choice if you want a go-everywhere digital with lots of features and solid performance! Love mine
Yes mine arrives today. can't wait to give it a go and I am sure I will buy your expert guide
Many thanks!
And congratulations on your purchase - I hope you'll like the camera as much as I do!
The expert guide will receive a huge update very soon - which you will get even if you purchase right now, of course.
just purchased your guide , and will start tomorrow
Hello Thomas, due to a camera shortage and various tiktok trends digital cameras are all sold out in the USA. The TG-7 is available (probably as it "doesn't look cute"), would you say its a good alternative to a Canon GX7 Mark 3 ? Best, Johannes
Hello Johannes,
The TG is, to a degree, a different camera than the Canon.
Is there a way to process RAW images? Or you only shoot jpg? Your answer would save me.
Yes, you can use OM Workspace for example.
Did you have any experience with the telecovertors?
Yes - there might be a video on those.
Just received this camera. Only one issue: can’t find where to switch between JPEG and RAW in the menu. Manual is no help.
Just bring up the live control menu by pressing OK and go to where it says "JPEG". Best, Thomas 📸
Do you have a video review for TG-6?
No, unfortunately not
What brand monopod/tripod does Thomas use in the video? Thanks!
I'm using Manfrotto Tripods only.
Best, Thomas 📸
Thank you, Thomas. You are an excellent teacher. It seems that your tripod has a clamp on for the TG-7? It seems to be a quick release. Is that feature incorporated in the tripod?
Thomas is there a way to sync-connect the TG 7 to an external Flash?
Yes! There is a dedicated menu option to remote control OM System flashes optically. Alternatively, you can trigger flashes with the built in flash as usual, if available. Best, Thomas 📸
My camera store still has olympus tg 7 not om system brand. I guess it's an old stock? Is there any difference between the two?
Also go pro and DJI managed to fit larger sensors 1/1.9 and 1/1.3 in smaller bodies
Yes, it really depends on what you need - larger sensor and no zoom, or smaller sensor and zoom. We are on the same page here!
I know.
😂 Не надо бросать камеру в природу! Возите с собой для этого обычные камни! 😊
how do I use the camera for my youtube videos in my studio? USB? setting?
I can help you out in a workshop. Best, Thomas
Nice neutrality maintained and features most important things apart from this most pro need tough in tough situation
Thank you!
I want this camera; leave the phone at car while going to hike in the forest no worrying about get wet etc.
Definitely the right tool for this job!
The resolution of a sensor is relatively irrelevant, it is important how many LW/PH a lens-sensor combination resolves. Don't get fooled by MP alone.
So true about the packaging.
👍
Anyone use the RC mode for flash om TG7? Can the power be adjusted manually like in Om series?
You can apply a global flash exposure compensation to control the output of all flashes at once. Works really well.
Dose it have the live ND if so I can’t find it
No, it is not available
Maybe a little addition to my previous reply:
There can be a center flare in backlit situations, but I was never able to get the lens to flare under normal circumstances. Note that light can reflect into the lens system as well coming from other angles. Using the CLA-T01 as a lens hood resolves this issue.
Yes thank you. Some emails crossed. 🙂
Definitely! Very well said.
Maybe you should put it on the holiday wish list :-)
How different is tg7 from tg6?
I don't have a TG-6 to compare it to, unfortunately
Great video... but your tie. Sorry, I had to say that. My TG-7 is on its way to my home, thanks.
Thanks
Many thanks!
So, how's the firmware updated tg-6? 🤔 🤣😂
Pretty good, I'd say ☺️
Great review!! but real bad video quality from this camera even iPhone is way better!! wish it was 1 inch sensor than would have been different story!
Thanks!
How do you come to the conclusion that the iPhone is better in terms of video, if I may ask?
Hmmm 12 megapixels in 2023?
Yes, exactly!
More than enough - I would have prefered even less, maybe 10 MP. Resolution is a marketing gimmick, at least at a certain point. As I've mentioned regarding the print size, resolution does not limit it.
I'm inclined to strongly disagree based on objective MTF lab measurements hehe
