Hi John, thanks a bunch for posting all these DIY videos!! They are a lot of help and we're building the courage to try shaping sometime or maybe just the glassing part at home! Where do you get your fins w/ boxes? How much would you estimate it cost (fiberglass & resin) to glass a blank?
Hey heck ya, so stoked to hear these are helpful to other garage building enthusiasts! You can buy fin boxes in person at surfboard manufacturers if you live near any in SoCal, if not you can buy fin boxes online at a bunch of places. My favorite online store for shaper supplies is shapersupply.com (cheapest generic fiberglass cloth, still great quality), greenlightsurfsupply.com (cheapest high quality epoxy resin, I only use epoxy, costs more but about 30% stronger supposably 😂🤷🏼). Green Light surf supply has a great library of DIY instructions for how to place fins etc.. One tricky part is I bought a fancy Futures jig plate and custom router bit (the futures "one shot") which makes routing fin boxes pretty easy, you can do it without this but will have to make your own DIY jig plate or very carefully by hand route out the fin boxes
Oh and for a board this big, I would give yourself a healthy amount of extra resin when glassing (with more experience I have been able to reduce wasted resin but while learning it’s helpful to mix a little extra for the lamination and hot coat), I would buy a gallon and a half resin for your first board, I started out using 40 oz per side for the lamination and then another 40 per side for the hot coat. When you become faster and more seasoned you can get away with less but for your first board I would give yourself the extra resin
@@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop Thank you! These recommendations are so helpful! We're located in North OC, but willing to cruise for supplies. The more we can save, the more boards we can experiment with. I may start out by getting on a blank and having it CNC'd because I know my son and I would be frustrated if we can't get the shaping symmetrical lol. Our personalities tend to lean towards perfection, which is our handicap. I think the glassing would be more forgiving & a do able task - hopefully! Aloha :)
Hey good luck! I actually started making boards just glassing CNC’d, it’s a fun first step to get into board building!
Love that template!Where can i get it from? JM from UK
Sorry, totally custom made this one on the spot. Ill have to pull out the dimensions and post for you🤘🏻
It’s 79.5 x 24 x 3, super high volume for older or heavier guys, or if you just want to catch everything. Just posted a second video showing how it surfs 🤘🏻 @vtZc
are those logos just printed off a regular printer on regular paper?
It’s super cool, you can print off home made logos on high quality rice paper using just a normal ink jet printer at home. The rice paper becomes translucent (see through) when it gets wet/saturated with resin, so all that you see is the ink! It’s pretty sweet, you can buy high quality rice paper at most surfboard supply websites, shapersupply.com is my favorite place, or just on amazon. I have been using this rice paper from amazon and it has been working great for me Art Advantage Rice Paper 100 sheets-Pack www.amazon.com/dp/B0027A39W2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_47LCkCmkzqXlD. The one drawback of printing logos at home is that you can’t print any “white colors”, your normal printer leaves blank spots with no color when printing white because the paper is already white. When wet with resin the white spots go clear/translucent. You can have your logos/drawings/pictures or whatever you want printed at boardlams.com which uses special printers with true white ink. Hope this helps
That's nice, what's the dimension? Looks like a good all around board.
Aloha from Hawaii. 🤙
Rudy C hey what’s up man, It’s 79.5 x 24 x 3, It’s a super fun board, Ive been surfing it in Costa Rica the last two and a half weeks and it rips. I shaped this board for my dad who is 6’2 and 180lbs, It’s pretty much a short board for someone a little older, hasn’t been hitting the gym enough, or just wants to catch EVERY WAVE out there hahahah. When i get back from the trip I’ll post some surf footage if you want to check it out
@@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop kinda reminds of the lost lazy boy, with those dimensions im sure it catches anything. Yeah would love to see the video.
Hey finally made it back out to Costa Rica, here is some footage if you want to see how it surfs @vtZc
@@kdenbeaches808 Very nice shape! Also reminds me of the CI Average Joe, but with even bigger than their standard dimensions. Just similar to what I also need to increase wave count! www.cisurfboards.com/board/average-joe/
You should forget about dental school and shape boards full time?🤙🏽
oh man hahahah I wish, shaping is so much fun, pretty sure my wife would kill me though 😂.
hey man iam new i wanted to ask you what you putted 3 layers of fiber glass on the top ? :)
Hello that’s a great question! Typically most shorter boards are glassed with 2 layers of 4 oz cloth on the deck, I like to put 3 layers of fiberglass cloth for the added strength. they come out just super strong, they are more ding resistant to bumps and hard knocks and regarding pressure dings these boards pretty much don’t get pressure dinged at all for their lifetimes. There are two downsides, first it adds a little extra weight, but if you are using EPS foam which is much lighter than normal foam you can glass the board heavier and it will come out with the same final weight but much stronger. The second downside is that it makes the boards a little more stiff and less flexible, really good surfers can feel their boards flex and bend underneath them during power carves and snaps... unless your an incredible surfer don’t worry about the board being a little more stuff, you won’t be able to notice at all and it won’t affect your surfing. So for the majority of surfers out there, i think EPS boards glassed heavier are a great option, they stay nice for longer and don’t get dinged up as easily!
@@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop thanks alot bro
How much will it cost to have you make me a board
Hello Miles, happy to hear you like my boards! I mostly shape for friends and family but depending on what your looking for I could shape you a board for $400-$500. I charge $400 for smaller fish boards and $500 for larger boards requiring more material like the one in this video 👍🏻
