Word of advice. Technique is everything. It's one thing to buy a blank that's been blown already 3/4 the shape of the finished product, and then roughly skinning it down and sanding it off following the predetermined curve. There's more to "if it looks good, it is good". Measurements, templates, curves, tape and calipers are king. Skin before cutting. Measure and draw. Learn to hold the electric planer correctly, then walk and follow through with it on every sweep, constantly adjusting the angle as you go along. And always, TAIL TO NOSE. Learn to use your pit lights as you do each part, you'd be surprised what they will pick up. Use a jack, bench, and pinch planer after the electric planer. Orbital sanders are the providence of glassers and finners, not shapers. All the orbital will do is throw knuckles in the blank. There is one about 4 inches down the nose, upper left rail, and was still there at the end, take a look. And re-do your stand heads, the blank is slipping around. Re-do with pitted foam, it grabs the blank and holds it still (re-weld the heads in plumbers pipe, best thing for heads, and then carefully measure and cut the foam to fit the round pipe, and then hand sew the foam on). As was already stated, technique is everything, that's why it takes years to become a master shaper. Eventually, you'll get a set of French curves and make your own templates, then you'll shape the boards you have in your head, not in everybody else's head (lol). Best of luck, stick with it.
I agree with Dang below, this is on my bucket list someday. Always enjoy watching people making boards. I really would like to make a Carbon fiber SUP. Thanks for sharing.
I think that the board of a handmaid is wonderful. I consider, as the flow of a plane when making the curvature of a board has broken off. The curve that the direction once deleted by the motion having applied to tail ? nose flows can be drawn.
i oredered my board from my shaper and i just cant wait to have it! all i can do is watch shaaping vids and wonder on what part my board is ....God Job
looks clean, good job! The length and how does it ride? It looks like a 6' -1"? I don't need a tools list as I'm from a family of carpenters, but I'd found online that ordering one blank has shipping at nearly $200 dollars... does that even sound remotely accurate?
+john huber my experience with shapers barrels were the first generation ones that were entirely covered with teeth, they are slower moving through the foam but no risk of tearing. If you know how fast you can move with the blade you won't tear( planers that are more powerful can cut faster). The new barrels have gaps in the teeth so the waste can move away quicker but I still like blades for accuracy
It doesn't look like you're adjusting the planer depth while making passes. What depth are you keeping the planer at? I only use the power planer to skin the blanks, but would like to use it to cut rail bands and put the concave in, as you apparently did. Well done!
You mean the stands right? The Y shaped holders. I'm wonderig where I can get those in the Netherlands. Maybe making something like that myself would be better?
make a dozen boards first then access the damage, then decide if its worth it to carry on or retire. Or you can clean and shine cars like the karate kid for your keep. it took me a dozen boards over the years to feel fairly competent and feel for how they work. when you understand what a board is at its best that's the magic moment. after that all your boards will go
Tools in order. 1:Eyes 2:Hands 3:Lights 4:Templet 5:Planer 6: Hours and hours of watching shapers in real life. And (HINT) make sure you have two blades on your planer or you'll roll your foam.

Nice job, but why not explain what you are doing and why you are doing it and what it does when you do it? Nice looking board though. Good damn job. I wonder why blanks are 1/2 price from 20 years ago, but boards are 3x as much now. Guess people are to lazy to just make a board and shaping is a dying profession. After I went to the local surf shop for the first time in about 20 years and bought a USED board for $400, I decided I would make my next one. Who know's, maybe it will end up nice! Probably won't kill me either, just need a cool gas mask respirator thingy. Anybody want a 10 year old quiet flight for $100? LOL!
The Video is called, hand shaping a board, not "how to hand shape a board". So just enjoying the beauty of it rather than asking for each individual step is rather preferred.
pbaylis1 @ La La. I used to make your boards at Fluid Drive. It does matter if the boards are symmetrical, and shaping the same board consistently lets you slowly refine your designs. How's that pickle fork design working out? lol
@@gregwebster8784 Hey Greg, did you glass boards for Kunny back in the mid 90's? If so, do you remember me? Gene / Glassic surfboards. Anyway, hope you are doing well. ;-)
Spoiled rotten these days. No decrusting a foam blank from scratch with the large tail plane then drawing out and hand sawing the plan shape, stepping in the rocker etc etc. Here it's all done. Not saying running in the rail is easy but jeez, talk about simple. Off to the shaping machine then a quick cleanup.

This is a bucket list of things I wanna do soon. Just the feeling of surfing on a board that you made.
I’m starting my journey now! I’ll be shaping my board in the next week or 2
these guys make it look so easy but i suppose like most things the more you do things the better you get
Shirley smith I was thinking the same thing but I bet you it is much more difficult it looks .

Roberto Z how did it turn out bro?
So efficient with the tools, moving fast and getting it done.
Learning by doing is the only way.
I like that you are using the electric planer and electric sander to work smarter not harder. Board looks good 👍🏾
looks clean, good job! The length and how does it ride? It looks like a 6' -1"?

mate i'm not sure where your from so couldnt help you with where to get one from, but when i got mine, shipping was bout 80$
Beautiful bro... hand shape is an art for few!
One question this planer is prep for foam or is just a planer for wood?
standard planer with blades (not shapers barrel)
+Adam Lane does it make it more difficult to work with out a shapers barrel or does the shaper barrel just eat up more foam

What kind of planer and sander are you using?
How long did this take bro? All in a day...or a few days??

Go to your local shaper buy a board and ask if you can sit in on the shaping of it
Hi there. Can you please tell me what materials you used, in what order, and the exact product. (company, type, price, etc...) Thank you

What kind of sander is the first one you're using?
It’s a 9 inch grinder with a sanding pad

David Toliver pretty hard you probably should learn from someone who shapes boards for a living
David Toliver It's possible. Do not buy off the rack, shape it yourself. That is what I do.

what kind of knife is that in the beginning? will any knife work?
It's called Japanese Saw. A regular saw can be use, as well as a jig saw or router. A few methods out there, even hot-wiring works.
What kind of resin and foam do the pro surfers of the asp use ? EPS or Polyurethane ?
Epoxy or Polyester resin ?
Both. But PU/Polyester is a bit cheaper, and more traditional.
dosen't Polyester melts Foam
only styrene it melts
How many hours did you spend shaping this board once you got the foam?
2 hours
sorry, 2 hours not including template design
Where did you buy the blank at?
What tipe of foam os that?
polyurethane foam
a bit unorthodox, but it came out well. it goes to show, that there's more than one way to skin a cat.
HAHA,, and whats with all that NOISE?
+Adam Lane what planer depths did u use throughout shaping? thnx
that sanding sound is murder on my ears

Hi Adam, what sandgrit are you using for grinding it at around 10minutes of the video? Is it 40? Cheers
I will guesstimate 80 grit. 40 will be too abrasive, especially at that step/phase of shaping this blank.
Nice job man
Where do I buy blanks? I’m in Vancouver BC

working foam is different to working wood. this is probably why certain techniques are used
dude this is sick, well done
EXCELENTE HAND SHAPE
love that Dusky on the background
I like the beer bottle in the background
The board is wooden ?
Looks like epoxy foam with a wood stringer.
styrofoam dust! mmmmm! Perfect!
Is that just regular styrofoam?
Beautiful... I'll take one!
5.5' x 23.5'' x 2.5''

How much $ ?

u really need a bigger saw haha
Good on ya

9/16" concave please
cool vid. good story.
There's much to learn in using tools, the planer specially, long strokes nose to tail. Much more to say here..
My project: Sand paper..check. Dust mask..check. Electric planer... damnit.

I don’t know what it’s called but you are using the really loud thing wrong it’s not meant to go sideways it’s meant to go forward
Matty Saunders its a planer and his doing fine.
@@laurasalinas192 Not good planer technique at all really.
working curves into foam is a lot different technique to planing timber. hence you use the planer differently. @@danballou2202
I know. I have shaped plenty of boards myself. I know everybody does it a little differently We'll agree to disagree.
i also make surfboards.. but it usually takes me 1 1/2 hours to shape a shortboard. my fb is Din Tokong Litangan and i am from the philippines
Nice! Also enjoyed In The Pines !
Not exactly build by numbers 😅 but nice, not too crazy, curves make a good solid board.
