Just finished my second surf on a board my dad and I shaped together. He's shaped all of my boards and I owe him so much. A Frankenstein small board with little nose rocker, flyers, 5 fin setup, v in the tail on the rounded pin, and it flies. Thank your shapers, they put so much work, thought, effort and love into these things. Hoping that both papa will read this, and that you'll receive the collective thanks from your viewers. Hope your life things are going well also, and that this thing flies - love quads!
Thank you so much for al The videos... This is really great and i learn al lot.... I'm a skimboard shaper from Italy... For me it's an hobby... Great job! 🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻
Love your channel and everything about it, recently I have been wanting to get into shaping I was wondering if you could do a video shaping with minimal tools so I could see and follow it. Thanks
Aspiring surfboard shaper here. I really enjoyed this video and the one with the planer tips. This one left me curious about a thing. What is that product you're applying with a paint roller starting on minute 17:31? Thanks for sharing!
In the case of having a 3-piece tail pad, do you think putting the center piece is an easier place to start with? I start with the sides first and honestly its a gamble most of the time.
I’m definitely no pro when it comes to putting on tail pads. But I’ve found that the middle section of the tail pad you can line up to the stringer and get it relatively straight that way. Then the side bits just fit in next to the middle. Tbh I still mess them up even doing it that way 😅
I’m about to start making my first board, think I’m gonna make around a 7’2 fish twin fin. I have noticed that some shapers route their fin boxes before glassing and others afterwards. Is there a benefit to one or the other? Love the videos
I was wondering if you could give me some tips for shaping my board. Im at the point where Ive made the rails but my rasp gouged out a spot or two on the top deck, If I sand it down my board will be too thin so should I just keep it like that? Will it effect painting or glassing?
Luke and Joe have both given excellent tips. It’s hard to give an exact fix without seeing how big/deep we’re talking. I don’t think sanding it down is worth it. You want the board how you designed it. Aesthetics are secondary here. Holes will effect the colour when glassing if it’s a deep rich colour they will show darker when filled with resin. Work with the ideas given and if they don’t work we can try figure out another solution. Good luck 🤙
Hi I can not find the answer about final coat you use ,What type of coat you rolled on the board? And How to deal with the roller fur that left the roller and stick on your board? Thank you so much🎉
Hey mate, do you buy blanks that are ready to be shaped? Or do you buy blocks of foam? If so whats your method for cutting the block into a base shape?
Hey man, love the video. Long time viewer here! I take a lot of inspiration from you Could you give me any tips on sanding? The last few boards i've made i get a lot of burn throughs. Im using a cheap palm sander 12k rpm with 240 and 320 grit sandpaper. In your experience is it just a skill issue, ou hardware issue? Thanks! Keep up the good work!
Are most of the burn through happening on the curves of the board? If you find your getting burn through always in the same areas slow the machine down or even just go back to hand sanding the spots.
@@Shrednaught mostly on more curved surfaces to be honest. Maybe i have not devolped the sensibility to know how much pressure to apply or when to stop yet. Some things just come with experience
@@DrHornyDude I’m still struggling with sand throughs too but I’m getting better because I slowed down my sander a lot and don’t use anything gnarlier than 220 on the rails and then I finish off with hand sanding. A softer pad helps too.
Awesome video mate, I learn so much from you on each video. I truly appreciate all the hard work you are doing with your channel. I have a question for you, is there a reason why you are routing the fin boxes before glassing and after glassing on some boards? Is there any advantage to one or the other? Thanks for your time and I hope you are scoring some good waves! Greeting from Vancouver Island, Canada!
Nice job. I learned a couple new things. Thank you! 1) Do you eyeball masking the rails for painting? 2) Did you dig into the bottom sides of the leash plug hole with the head of the screw in order to make the bond stronger? 3) What is that clear stuff you are applying at 17:31? Gloss? 4) Where can I buy a roller like the one you rolled the glass down with after you cut the lap? Thanks again!🤙🏼🏄🏻♂️
Yeh I just eye balled the tape lines on this one. As it’s a personal board I try force myself to get better with things like that. The clear stuff is clear acrylic. Concrete/paving sealer to be exact. The hard rubber roller can be found at most big hardware stores I’d imagine. I got mine from Bunnings. Thanks for watching 🤙
you are a true master. I love the way you have coloured the rails with a roller. would you have any issues using this same painting technique with epoxy? I am always conscious of contamination issues with epoxy as it is so temperamental.
As long as you use the appropriate paint and don’t lay it on too thick, shouldn’t have any issues. If you are still unsure just do a spray on the final sanded coat and do a clear acrylic coat over the top.
Do any hand shapers use a 2'or 4' precision carpenters level to level the bottom or deck? How are the rail and deck thickness symmetrical on each side of center without checking the bubble? When you put a rail profile gauge on each side of the board do they match? Curious! 🤙🏼✌🏼
I don’t use a spirit level. I use an 8ft ally bar to get my rocker set. I then use a 3ft flat sanding block to flush everything up. Once you have a 90* outline and true bottom you run your rail measurements from there. Several rail band numbers are used then the same amount of screening both sides. You can then go to a rail gauge but I prefer to use my eyes and hands. After a few years of doing it you can get it almost perfect. Nothing is ever 100% but that’s life 😅
This vid has so much to digest 😅. Always appreciate you work man. I have a question regarding the final acrylic coat. I'm trying to replicate this... bought some acrylic floor sealer... but when I apply the acrylic I get a ton of little bubbles (using a foam roller). I'm wondering if you experience the same thing or if you apply it with a different type roller, or if your sealer just doesn't bubble 🤷
I use a high density foam. Sometimes I get bubbles if I go too quick but other than that it doesn’t really affect me. Maybe it’s the acrylic you have? I use a concrete sealer acrylic
@@Shrednaught Thanks. Yeah I am using a high density roller as well. I guess my acrylic formula is just prone to bubbles. I'm using Concrete Coatings SuperSeal 20WB here in the States. Anyway the bubbles seemed to be less noticeable after drying, so I will try to scuff them out with some 400 grit later.
Hey Shred. Back in my youth (80's 90's) I used to shape the odd board and make glass fins for a few extra quid. Someone else glassed my boards. I'm building an old man board now (in my 50's) and have a question. Do you add wax in styrene on your lam or just on the hot coat?? I just noticed any bumps sand pretty easy without sticky mess. I remember missing the WIS on a lamination I did for a centre fin and that sucker would not sand 😁 Cheers from Cornwall England
Good stuff mate! The lam is only resin no wax in styrene. Only add wax to the fill coat to allow sanding. The wax creates a film on top of the resin which allows full cure for sanding but if used in laminated layers in could cause delam between glass. Good luck with your build and hit me up if you need any more help 👍
It’s the mirka deros 5 and I bought it for that exact reason. As I don’t have a dedicated sanding bay I needed a vac extraction and this sander and the mirka guaze sanding pads eliminate 90% of dust 👌
Unprofessional surfboard shaper here who can find using power planers tricky to use and quite clunky, I was wondering if you’ve had a similar experience?
Great board, as all the previous. Can i do a question? I have an eps blank, sealed with epoxy slurry. I need to paint it. I have acrylic water base paint. What you suggest me? Painting before lam or over hot coat? Thanks a lot and sorry for my english
You could do either but I’d always suggest checking with the resin supplier. If you have a small off cut of foam you could always do a test and check that it doesn’t bleed 🤙

Mostly depends on whether the board is a colour or clear. Clear I do into foam and colour I do after glassing. Keeps it looking neat

Yeh I underscore the foam and also poke holes in to create an anchor. Then mix the resin with milled fibre and they’re strong as.
