The Legend Of The Most Controversial Video Title _edit: I was incorrect about MKDD being the last game to show you CPU times. MK Wii showed CPU times in GP mode BUT ONLY in GP mode; So while unfortunate it doesn't tell you times when playing with your friends, it is still technically the last MK to show finish times._
Every time someone mentions Double Dash the immediate response is how overrated it is. Idk what people are saying in the comments about no one hating this game.
@@GozieSounds if almost everyone says it's overrated, wouldn't that indirectly make it controversial since one half is sucking the games dick and the other half is shitting on it?
1 thing I missed about these games is how the karts are based on the characters. Dk ridding a barrel or a jeep is so much more charming than just picking the ultimate kart combination.
agreed, the custom karts are fun but I'd honestly rather see the preset karts return in future entries, their designs were just so fun and creative (or at least make kart customization more balanced and give crazier options, weird stuff like the gold mantis or dry bomber from MKDS for kart types would be fun)
An underrated mechanic that no one mentions ever but I appreciate is that the characters stack the items in their hands and if you get hit before using them you lose all of them besides 1, adds another layer to the focus on items in this game.
Also in defense of Kirby Air Ride, it makes sense that being hit doesn't immediately do much there, since that game is balanced around the carts each having different HP stats, which when depleted, put you out of commission for an extremely long time. Items have more uses per item roulette in that game, so it's balanced around landing repeated hits.
Air Ride is super fun, just a different type of fun than Double Dash They're both 2 of my favorite games and I played them all the time with my friends as a kid 😄
@@co94207 I literally grew up with Air Ride. Health is off by default, and is really only a concern during races in City Trial if the selected game is a race; But mind you, if that happens the race is only a single lap which isn't enough for health to matter. Not to mention hitting an opponent can actually make them go FASTER if it knocks them in the air and they have an air ride that is faster when airborne.
@@silokhawk Double Dash, Im thinking about selling Metriod Prime and F-Zero because I don't play them anymore. My local game store is selling it for $80 bucks with the case, manual, and game
Double Dash is one of the most important entries in the entire Mario series, solely because it set up which Mario secondary characters were the main ones that would return for entries to come. Bowser Jr, Diddy, Waluigi, Daisy, Birdo, Toadette, King Boo, even the babies to an extent.
I often wonder if Toadette was created for DD or TTYD, I mean DD released earlier but both games were probably developed at the same time and Toadette feels like a natural Paper Mario inclusion imo
@@radioactivevolt I feel like she was created for Double Dash, because honestly, who else would Toad's partner be? Nintendo didn't really have any characters that would work for that, so they just invented a new one instead.
Mario Kart Double Dash is praised and beloved by fans and content creators. I hardly see any dislike for this game. I often see people say its the best, unique, and chaotic. Only critics were not a fan of Double Dash at the time.
Someone certain)y lives in a bubble. Look man Mario Kart Wii is the most beloved title. Get over yourself you 2000's nostalgia goggled chump. And before you say anything,I grew up in the Gamecube era and I found Double Dash to be really stupid, unbalanced and controls terribly and I'm glad Mario Kart Wii fans drowned out all of you fans of this game.
I wish you went more in depth about the co-op riding with another player in a single kart. Growing up I'd play this all the time with my friends and my best friend and I got really good on sharing a kart said the person not driving could punch other players. Since I was better at handling the steering controls and we had good communication of when to use items, and punching actually pushed the kart out more, we became an unstoppable duo. I loved double-dash, probably my second favorite Mario kart behind deluxe.
And to drift, you had to cooperate. The driver needed to initiate the drift, the passenger needed to tilt the stick in the right direction to get the drift sparks. It was so great. Punching was also ve4y fun in balloon mode.
Also when you punch someone you steal their items. My dad an i used to play this way when i was really young and had basically no driving skill in the game. I now crush all my friends at it. Double dash will always be my favorite Mariokart, but i enjoy the new ones as well.
One of the best things about Double Dash is how interconnected the tracks were. For example, RainbowRoad in this game can be seen OVER Mushroom City. Speaking of which, in that track, you can see Shroom Ridge in the distance.
Super Mario Sunshine did something similar with its levels. You could see the other stages from different parts of the island. I guess Nintendo was into that sort of thing back then. I wish they would do it again.
@@GeneralFatman27 Exactly! That's what was so great about the Gamecube era, they were very purposeful about making each world feel alive and a part of a coherent universe. You can also see the A Rank Mansion from the end of Luigi's Mansion on Luigi Circuit!
The only time I've ever played Double Dash was at a sleepover with my elementary friends and I remember enjoying it a lot. I always appreciate it when a game tries to stand out from the crowd!
I find the whole Wii players bashing on Double Dash debacle to be funny because only a few years ago the exact opposite was happening up until people who grew up with Wii became nostalgic to the game and now you don't hear a lot of folks praising Double Dash as a result cause that nostalgia praise had passed
@@ballisticboo7808 Not necessarily since it seems Mario Kart 7 ended up being skipped in the cycle and just seems to be stuck in this permanent state of divisiveness. Honestly I found that game to be fine but the online and the Mario Kart Channel features can be very unstable to the point where softlocks can happen.
I think the 64/SNES/Gamecube ones were mostly people born between 1985 and 1996 whom grew up playing one of the earlier Mario Kart games either on the SNES (Super Famicom), NIntendo 64, or Gamecube. Personally, I'm glad my siblings and I got to experience the PS1 and N64, consoles, along with the Sega Saturn, that introduced 3D graphics into the console, but also allowed 2D gaming, and heck, with the PS1 being powerful enough to emulate arcade games and even past video games, compliations and collections of many old 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and even arcade games straight into the PS1, makes it one of the most nostalgic consoles, along with the N64, of all time. When the PS2 came out, not only could it play DVDs + CDs (Both listening to music and movies), but it also allowed you to play all of the PS1 games you had back on the PS1 now playable on the PS2, along with PS2 games on the same console. For the gamecube, well, N64 games were NOT compatible with the gamecube, so unfortunately you had to still use an N64 to play N64 games while the gamecube went with min-dvd discs which didn't have a lot of storage, but was much more feasible and cheaper to produce than cartridges. Still though Nintendo was able to re-release Ocarina of Time on the gamecube with the extra maps, but all of the previous N64 games (Pokemon Stadium - Mario Party 3) were completely stuck on the console until the Nintendo Wii Shop Channel came along. And sometimes you were hoping an N64 game you wanted to play was on there. Otherwise, unfortunately, you'll have to stick with the console until emulation got good enough to be playable on a PC/Mac/Linux. These days, I do recommend playing it on emulators as they look 3x better than playing it on a CRT/Modern TV. And to be honest, it's kind of nostalgic and almost heartwarming to know it's been twenty years since that game came out. I was only 7 years old when F-Zero GX, Kirby Air Ride, Ham-Ham Heartbreak, Mario Golf Toadstool Tour (One of my favorite golf games to play to this very day), Mario Party 5, and Mario Kart Double Dash ALL released within the same exact year, 2003. I do think ever since 2003 Nintendo really hasn't been able to produce so many games released within a span of months as 2003 did. Considering both Nintendo didn't like the gamecube and N64, it made sense why developers didn't like it as much as third party companies didn't like it either, but the specs of the gamecube and what you can pull off despite the setbacks, made it still a fun console to play that took risks that unfortunately in later generations, were never brought over into the present day. I do think that if the gamecube games are re-released on the Switch, either as separate games to buy or done digitally, they'll be able to have some sort of online mode to it, and alos 16 player multiplayer/grand prix options that I do think kids these days might want to go for the frantic crazy hectic insane type of gameplay Double Dash brings compared to Mario Kart Wii does. Even then I still find the Wii game to be 3x harder to beat than the gamecube game itself, but that's just me.
WHO TF thought Giant Banana sucks??? That shit covers a massive amount of road, especially tight & linear paths ala Baby Park, Wario Colosseum, Rainbow Road, etc.????
LAN mode made for some of the best gaming sessions I had in high school. Hearing the guys in the other rooms of my friends house yell angrily after getting beamed by a giant shell was priceless
to be completly honest, i don't think it would make sense if the koopalings shared the same slot since they're completely different characters. i think the worst case is with characters like tanooki mario, that don't really make a lot of sense in being separated from mario, same thing with cat peach
@@Twilight44203 thing is they don't need different states sense they are litteraly the same character. Unlike the koopalings which have widely different body shapes to the point it would be weird for all of them to share stats
one of my favorite qol features of double dash is how the co driver (char. in the back) leans with their body according to whether you're drifting or steering. And I also really like how they bobble whenever they land or hit bumps.
Thank you for mentioning the controls/physics that so many people gloss over or just say it's bad because they're bad. THAT is why no future mariokart can replace Double Dash in my mind
Seriously. Everything from wii onward is just flat out boring to drive in. Double dash is fun precisely because the physics are interesting and take some skill to maneuver with. I'd compare it to the difference in physics between mario 64 and galaxy.
@@abonne3154DS is an ok game but I much prefer SMK's take on Dpad oriented steering. DS just feels extremely basic, the default turning with no drift is so flat, weak, and boring, like your tires have glue on them. It's just not very interesting, SMK takes some thought to maneuver in.
I think that part of why the physics are different is because the second character makes sure the center of gravity is further to the back, ensuring that the rear wheels have more of a role in steering.
You know what my biggest complaint with Double Dash is? The fact that there’s only 16 tracks. I want MORE from this already amazing game. This game handles so franticly yet so tight and smooth at the same time. It makes it so fun and addicting. No other Mario Kart comes close to the feeling that this game gives me.
I get preferring how DD handles the double items over MK8, but to say it was "sloppy" is a bit much, imo. It's doesn't hamper the game, it just makes you think more carefully about how to use the items given
@@trevormeikle968it’s ok, people just like shitting on new things for the sake of it. It’s a welcome addition from the original mario kart 8 and I don’t understand why people are hating on it
This is my second favorite Mario Kart entry right after Wii. The idea of having 2 characters and each of them having unique specials (minus Boo and Petey) was genius. I also love how drifting works in Double Dash. Another thing I REALLY love is that you can punch other players that are close to you, meaning that you CAN defend yourself even without items. I wish more of the Gamecube tracks returned as DLC in MK8D too.
I loved Double Dash growing up, and even as recently as last year, i could fire it up and have a good time with it. The massive cast of characters, the style of drifting and getting boosts at the beginning of a race, the excellent stages...Nowadays, admittedly, I'll just play Mario Kart 8, since it's the newest one, but I must scratch my head every whenever people speak ill of DD. To anyone who doesn't like it, I'd ask them to give it another chance today. It's probably a lot better and a lot more interesting than they remember
I've never played DD, but I really appreciate its distinct visual identity, it looks way more appealing than most other MKs. Also, track selection here is a banger!
I feel the same way. I never had a Gamecube at all, but just watching Double Dash videos and seeing how incredible the two-per-kart and special item mechanics are really make this a standout from all the other Mario Kart games (even Wii) and honestly my favorite mainline Mario Kart game.
Wii and Double Dash are perhaps the best Mario Kart games in terms of pure raw mechanics. A game with Wii's stunt/acrobatic mechanics and DD's dual racer mechanics would be the PERFECT Mario Kart in my eyes :) Love the super granular breakdown, man!!!
Imagine if there's a mario kart 10 someday where they fused Wii's mechanics, with Double Dash's mechanics. Hell, even have four racers within the same kart, and that would be maddening as heck to bring in more choas than ever before, while creating a challenge to the player to see if they can do it or not. 4 racers, 3 racers, or 2 racers in one kart, or just 1 racer by itself. And also, bring back the Shine Thief/Bomb-Omb Blast Star Hits instead of balloon battle with bombs, along with the battle stages from both Double Dash, DS, and Wii's one thank you very much.
One thing that I think bears mentioning is the voice acting that adds to the chaos of the game. Most characters, when hit by something seemingly trivial like a shell, they actually yell and panic (future games they mostly just grunt; Mario Kart 8 Deluxe really dropped the ball in terms of impact IMO; just hit someone with a shell in Double Dash versus Mario Kart 8 or Mario Kart Wii). Getting blown up causes the rear character to be dragged (and makes you prone to getting shoved by others, it invalidates your weight). This is on top of the momentum you mention in the video. Also this game has pretty quotable and hilarious voice acting like "Hi I'm Daisy", "Take-a that!", "Oh yeah, who's number one now? Luigi", "No, no, no, no, no." The Koopas, when paired together and get hit, sometimes play the same clip, but have different pitch so you hear this chaotic noise. Double Dash wouldn't be the same if the characters weren't hollering. I also like throwing the items forward in this game more than other games, like the banana. Bananas in later games don't have these physics, they just look static. Not in this one, you see them opening up while being thrown. I love the little animations like that. Also the juggling or holding the triple items, makes the game look even more precarious. I kind of like how Double Dash doesn't even let you drag items (this wasn't even mentioned and IMO it's a big unique thing of this game) so you actually have to position yourself to block a red shell. You also notice the sense of speed between the games. The other Mario Karts feel sluggish compared to Double Dash. I think Double Dash also shines on its relatively narrow roads while future Mario Kart games have this trend of widening the roads so much and reducing the amount of responsiveness you have on your kart; this is also compounded with the rear character providing visual feedback of how you steer and showing the sense of chaos the game thrives on. Just compare taking the bridge boost panel shortcut in Dino Dino Jungle in Double Dash versus later games; it's a lot more precarious in Double Dash due to the narrower road and more sensitive turning. And racing games thrive on that sense of danger that other Mario Karts just don't quite replicate. I personally find the Egg the worst item. It has a pretty short range unlike a red shell (it breaks a lot sooner than you think so if you're decently trailing, it's not very useful), it releases items that can benefit your enemies (I've taken stars and Mushrooms from eggs that hit me; Bob-ombs that fly out are very easily avoided). Sure you can throw it in first to snag that rare star or a mushroom or so (most of the time it's just shells, bananasm or Mushrooms in an awkward spot) I guess but it's not that great of a benefit. Also its tracking kind of sucks (on par with red shell). Most of the time you'd rather get a red shell.
The egg is pretty good (For the player) ,you can get it in 1st place and make it hit some item on the road to maybe get a star/shroom (If you get hit by an opponent too ,you can hope to recover the time loss while the AI doesn't even try to take the item scattered on the road)
Agree with plumebrise, I like the egg for the first place, I always threw it forward in hope of a star being in it and just expanding my lead even more. only for that reason I always pick Yoshi in Double Dash.
I never knew this game was controversial, I agree with everything you said, it is my favorite Mario Kart game. I may be biased because I was 7 years old when I played it, I had only played Mario Kart 64 before and I liked it a lot, but Double Dash was a massive upgrade, it totally blew my kid mind back in the day. But I do think Double Dash is a very unique game with mechanics that never were brought back to the series. Aside from the obvious two racers per kart, you forgot to mention that you could steal oponent's itens by boosting throught them or with a star. That was so cool, I dont know why they never brought it back.
The co-op mode where two players control 1 kart, one driving and the other managing items and the turbos is the best idea this franchise has ever seen.
As a wii fan who grew up on that game I've been dying to try double dash. Seriously looks awesome. Edit: for context, I used "unironicly" in a context where "seriously" would've fit better because of habit. So I fixed that.
I'm so glad you mentioned hit-stun in this game. In Wii and 8DX, it is brutal, it completely kills your speed. It's not necessarily "unfair," but it is unfun. If you're gonna make the items so abundant, you need to balance it out by making them not so devastating. This is why I like this game more than both Wii and 8DX.
i remember back in the 2004ish, i went to a barbershop with my lil sister and while waiting, they had a gamecube and double dash. i never played the game or heard of it before, but intuitively, i was the driver and she was in charge of items. the controls were so smooth, we got 1st every time. we chose the babies for no reason, and baby park changed everything for us. we were hysterically laughing at the chaos. we were so good, if we got bananas, i would tell her "ok, throw it forward, but do it when i say to." i would line myself up, go "NOW" and we would snipe anyone in front of us. our dynamic duo was diddy kong (me) and bowser jr (my sis) so we always had the big shell and big banana. i played mario kart wii and even though i was a boss at that game, online and playing with family, i still believe double dash is way more fun. people who like winning or playing the funky kong meta will always say wii is better, but double dash is just silly, more fun. i looove your take on items, sooo facts bruh. i want this game to come back, i remember getting hit by items and laughing, enjoying, same energy as you like "WE STILL GOT THIS." but mario kart 8, wii, it's damn near over sometimes and you go "ugh." this game is a chef's kiss
The ability to actually play co-op by sharing a single kart is the reason this will always be my favorite Mario Kart game. I had so much fun doing this with friends, and even people who don't normally care for Mario Kart can have fun just being the person in the back using the items while the other one does all the driving. It's such a unique mechanic, and future games not having it is 100% the reason why I never really played or cared about any of them much (except DS, but that was more the combination of it being portable and having better single-player content). I played Wii and 8, but without a co-op mechanic like DD, I didn't get anywhere near the same kind of mileage out of those.
This entry has grown on me over the years. My first experience with this game was inside this game room at this diabetes center on this kiosk that also had one for the N64. They looked pretty cool, but I didn't think much about Double Dash for years until my brother found me a copy. When I finally tried it after all those years, I really didn't like the controls. Later on I realized the controls and drifting were kind of similar to Diddy Kong Racing where you can dodge items by drifting. Both games have controls new people will probably not like at first, but with practice with the game's mechanics, you can do some crazy stuff. Look at those barrel rolls speedrunners do in Spacedust Alley. Some pretty insane stuff. You can get some insane speed with well timed boosts. Please review that game someday. I feel like it deserves more attention. Maybe a Diddy Kong Racing vs Crash Team Racing video since they both have an adventure mode with their own unique structure and controls.
10:00 absolutely agree, double dash is my favorite because how satisfying the controls are Plus, Dodging redshells and even blue shells with a drift, absolutely phenomenal 11:00 YES, getting hit by an item in double dash doesn't feel annoying, if anything it actually gets me laugh a lot of the time 12:00 okay I just gotta get this out of the way, literally everything you've said about double is exactly how I feel, it's good to know that people see what I mean
I disagree on the item switch issue for MK8 since the only reason why that feature exist is because you have TWO playable characters, so the 2 slots in MK8D works because of LUCK, NOT BUY SKILL, which is why you mainly get coins, But that is exclusive to GP mode IF you prefer that mode while Vs and Online modes, you can select which items you want i the whole mode
4:27 The thing is it's skill based in 8 Deluxe. In Double Dash you get whatever item you want to switch to, in 8 Deluxe you have to use strategy when using items, or try to get 2 separately so that you can get the ones you need. So 8 Deluxe has a high skill ceiling for item play, while Double Dash has a high skill ceiling for drifting.
@@Pyrodiac Well, there is for example deciding when to use a coin when in first place. If you use up your coin, you won't guarantee a good item in first. Or, choosing to risk using a banana or shell for the chance to get the horn (which destroys a blue shell). In Double Dash in first place, you're basically guaranteed the best possible defense item, with no reason to drop it. There's more but that's all I thought of for now.
@@theAstarrr For me it's simple: When I get an item, if I'm not in first place, use it, is I am, is it a coin? If so, use it, if not keep it behind me. Unless I'm in the uncommon scenario where 2nd place gets 2 blue shells in a row or someone in a close-ish place gets a triple red I see no reason to risk replacing my defense items with likely just coins so I have the chance to get another defense item. And in terms of trying to get a horn, I don't know why I should do the same thing to have a CHANCE of ignoring a rare item.
@@Pyrodiac if you get a coin in first, hold onto it. It guarantees the second item you get won't be a coin. (Unless the game has a really bad connection online) That's part of the strategy Also, a blue shell destroys items held behind you, but not items you haven't used yet. It's best to wait on defense items until the last second so that a blue shell won't destroy them.
Having revisited the game a few months back it’s insane how the steering both gives you so much control yet feels so slippery. Like you can dodge items so easily if your skilled enough but it feels like you’re just barely scrapping by.
I have never played Double Dash, but as soon as i knew about the wacky controls, the special objects and the fact that two characters drive one kart. I mean, bro, that is why i am here for. It has everything that could make Mario kart a funny videogame
As someone who grew up playing Wii I just got this game and I love it! It is easily up with MarioKart 8 and MarioKart Wii as one of my favorites! The chaos in the items is just so fun.
I’m surprised you never mentioned this in your video, but the interesting thing about blue shells is that you can dodge them when you perform a mini turbo “skillfully.” This happens often if you’re snaking with the Diddy Kong Barrel. Another critique I would add that you didn’t mention was regarding red shells. The problem with reds in this game is that they suck at hitting the player if the racer is approaching a huge turn with the Wario Colosseum and Rainbow Road helix being the biggest examples of reds missing their targets. The other way people are able to dodge reds easily is by snaking in a straightaway as the red will be confused when it comes to tracking the racer. Besides that this is a top 3 Mario Kart game. If any Mario Kart game deserves a remake for the Switch it would be this one.
Believe it or not, i was able to avoid red shells while drifting as well. For blue spiny shells though, those are hard to miss, but if done right, it's amazing to pull off and you may be left there thinking that was freakin' awesome to avoid.
I actually think the red shells not being perfectly accurate is a really good mechanic. It forces the racer with the red shell to actually think about when to throw the shell out, as unlike the new games, red shells don't handle ramps and tight turns well. It's also worth noting that since you can't hold items behind your kart in this game, the defending player has to time tossing an item backward to destroy an incoming red shell, which i personally really enjoy, as it very satisfying to pull off.
@@mikesinibaldi5918 I don’t think the problem with Deluxe’s reds is that they are amazing at tracking people, it’s that they are way too common of an item to pull. Because of this combined with the fact that racers now can hold two items make being in the middle of the pack a nightmare when it comes to online. There are many problems with Deluxe’s item system and the reds are one of the most notorious examples people being up.
I'd rather have reds that can miss than reds that will automatically chase you down wherever you are and hit you regardless. It's one of my least favorite things about deluxe and tour
this is one of my favorite things in double dash. bad red shells. it’s way more fun to have more reds and dodge some of them, than to just see a red and know FOR SURE that you’re screwed like in the newer game. High skill versus low skill gameplay, which is more fun?
My favorite memory of DD was playing with friends sharing a kart and having to strategize when to switch when we picked certain items or when one of us felt better about driving in a course
Double Dash really set up a lot in the series whether you like it or not and as the first game in the series that I’ve played with my brother back a few years after it came out, we still to this day play it. In fact we’re planning on playing it one more time before he official moves out in a few weeks so it’ll be one last ride through the All Cup Tour just to close things off
Bro, you have no idea how much I was screaming at Nintendo to put Wario Colosseum in Mario Kart 8 when I was in 5th grade because the anti gravity would have been perfect. Not only is it not in the base game, but now we’ve had 2 entirely different DLC packages, and it STILL has not been added. That’s an absolute crime I still haven’t forgiven Nintendo for.
Could it have been added in the Booster Course Pass, no, because Tour didn’t add it, but could it have been added in 8’s base game or DLC, absolutely, and I’m still weirded out by how that didn’t happen
So, a couple of other tidbits about Double Dash that I think are neat, 1. This was the game that introduced Toadette, which I'm thankful for since she is as cute as a button, and it's neat that DD's legacy lives on in a sense in games like Odyssey and Mario Maker 2 through her, and 2. For the longest time, this was the Mario Kart that was the hardest to find glitches that could aid in speedruns for sometime, which is funny considering this game was on the same system as Super Mario Sunshine and Super Smash Bros. Melee.
Hey, SilokHawk! Cool video! I will say, in my opinion, Mario Kart: Double Dash is my favorite out of all the other Mario Karts. The first time I played it was when I went to an arcade place, and they had a GameCube console with several games, and Mario Kart: Double Dash was one of them. When I sat down and played it with the GameCube controller, I knew that it was my favorite. I really enjoy all of the Mario Karts. Also, when I was at the arcade, my friends were there, too. So they got to play with me as well. So incredibly fun, and such a good time. It’s definitely one of those games where you need to have your friends over, and play. It is perfect. Love the look of the game, love the tracks, love the idea of the characters. Also, I just have to mention it, but Mario Kart: Super Circuit is also another favorite of mine, and I find it absolutely underrated. You have a great day!
I finally got a hold of this game after several, several years of wishing I could play it, and if there’s one word I could use to describe this one, that word would be “different”. The GameCube era was all about taking pre-existing IPs and seeing what crazy stuff could be done with them. Compared to Mario Kart 64 on Nintendo’s previous home console, I personally feel that this game was a lot more polished from start to finish, owed largely to the course design and the improvements to multiplayer. I do wish there was just a bit more single player content, and I do have my gripes with the gameplay, but I really feel like this is one of those games where sale numbers compared to the rest of its series doesn’t tell the whole story. I easily think this is a better game than 64 overall, and feel like some combination of Double Dash’s drifting, Wii’s standstill mini-turbo mechanic, and 8 Deluxe’s customization options would make for one of the greatest games ever made for a Nintendo console.
I take issue with you calling Mario Kart 8's inclusion of the Koopalings as "lazy." As an older Mario fan, I was excited to see them included as individual characters. Their character designs tend to be quite distinct - with some overlapping "clone" body types - so it makes sense to have them as 7 distinct characters rather than "Light Koopaling," "Medium Koopaling," and "Heavy Koopaling." I don't see how including 7 new characters is "lazy" at all. I understand characters like Metal Mario and Pink Gold Peach who are blatant roster padding using existing characters, but the Koopalings are all distinct from one another.
Yeah, that's some of the points I don't agree on. The Koopalings are more distinct and different from each other than literal clones like Metal Mario, Pink Gold Peach, Tanooki Mario and Cat Peach.
They also play a more significant role in the series today than a lot of the spinoff only characters like Daisy or Waluigi, it makes sense to have them represented
different times. you see, back in your day, the koopalings were indeed individuals, with very distinct identities in the cartoon, and WIIILD attacks in the games, another important part here is mario 3 was made on NES. that machine didnt have a lot of space to use for new stuff, so each koopaling being individuals was a HUGE deal, these devs intended for these bosses to be remembered! then they vanished. for a LOOOOOOOONG time. fast forward to his day, the koopalings finally return in NEWWW SUPER MARIO BROS, WEEHEEE! except, we have a problem. *when* the kooplings returned, it wasnt with fanfare, it was with boss fights. why'zat a problem? because at this point in time, mario RPG was out a long time ago, the paper games did strides in making a world with individuals, mario & luigi had slapstick violence (and koopalings, but for some reason handheld games dont count so shhhhhh), sunshine had a billion talking piantas, luigis mansion, and need I mention GALAXY!!! needless to say, the kooplins were up against some *fierce* competition. they werent prepared to face it. when all you have is boss fights, compared to EVERYTHING above, you will not stand out to A audience that's had this much mario to play. even worse, when the koplins DID finally get personality, it was in the sequel to the game that (allegedly) ruined the paper mario series! with that baggage, I imagine people would HATE the k'plins, hold 'em up as figureheads for what was wrong with nintendo at the time! and that's why some people think mario kart k'pl'ns are lazy.
I'm so happy to see you cover Double Dash, it was my and my younger brothers first ever Mario Kart and still by far my favourite, it's colourful, clumsy and chaotic and every aspect of the game just feels so well balanced. I still go back to it regularly and although I do love all the other mario karts nothing quite hits the same as DD Great video!
I'm surprised you didn't mention 2 things. First was how you can see other tracks on the current track you're playing on. For example: on Mushroom Bridge you can see both Peach's Castle where Mario Circuit is located and Mushroom City's skyline. In return you can also see Mushroom Bridge in the distance in Mushroom City. Second is that the character who isn't driving and isn't using an item can punch other drivers, I think that feature is exclusive to co-op play but I'm not sure since it's been ages since I've played this game.
My favorite thing about the chain chomp is that it's not a guaranteed 2nd or 3rd place, you have to keep in mind where it's swinging you, and where it leaves you. Using it on rainbow road is pretty much useless, you're getting flung off whether you you like it or not
Wow. I could never figure out why I hated Wii so much. It's because I grew up with Double Dash, and only Double Dash until Wii came out. So the fact Wii slows you to a crawl when getting hit vs. Double Dash is what drove me to never completing Wii. 15 years later and now I finally know.
I never grew up with Double Dash, I actually played it last year, and I immediately loved it and it’s now my favorite Mario Kart game. I never knew that it was hated so much at first nor did I know the chain chomp would be turned into the bullet bill. Also fuck yeah Mushroom City is one of my favorites
Honestly I like the fact that you can't swap items in MK8D because it poses this risk reward: Should I risk getting double coins or just keep the 1 defensive item I have? It poses a question no other MK game has and I like it for that. Being able to swap items completely ruins that for me, but I can see why you think that way.
I understand what you’re saying, but I think being able to swap items in general adds a lot more strategy to the gameplay than just deciding whether or not you’ll risk your luck
@@BendonPC BUT is also incredibly overpowered for first places. Everyone should know by now that on first place the best you can get is a banana peel or green shell as defensive mechanism from red shells. It works in Double Dash because items are at their strongest but would be a disaster in Deluxe.
I absolutely love double dash, it’s my favorite Mario kart by far and yes, it is nostalgia, but it’s not the same as people being nostalgic for Wii or DS. DD is my favorite because its mechanics are so different. People whose favorite is Wii can still play 8 and feel like they’re playing an updated version of their childhood favorite, when I play 8, I feel like I’m playing a different game. I’m familiar with DDs drift style and handling since I played it almost daily when I was a kid. DS and Wii are the basis of modern Mario kart, so double dash is like a forgotten gem. My fiance and I sometimes play my old copy and play in the co op mode since he isn’t the best with the unusual mechanics and we have so much fun playing together
I love double dash, so there's a couple things I'd like to point out too that didn't get mentioned. Because you can have two players for one kart there's actually unique mechanics exclusive to 2 player including a hip-check (that im pretty sure can steal items from the nearby kart if they have something like a triple mushroom) and an ultra boost at race start if both players time it correctly. A couple of small things but still really neat. Another thing is that Luigi Circuit actually has 2 different versions. One where you can drive into opposing racers and one where you can't, though i think the one where you can't is 50cc exclusive. And finally, the saddest thing I want to mention, the shortcut in Yoshi Circuit that was removed from future Retro versions. Rest in peace you beautiful thing.
Double Dash will always be a favorite of mine. I love the style, the kart controls, the double character mechanic, both of the traffic tracks and the Luigi Circuit/Yoshi Circuit race song. Also, it’s ironic that the most divisive MK game is the most expensive to get second hand online.
I will never understand why everyone has Wii as their favorite, especially since 8 and Double Dash exists. But if they love playing Wii, then that’s fine.
I had Wii in the past but not long enough to be super dedicated to the game. I imagine that those who are are into the modding community that and major Funky Kong stans.
Double Dash is by far the best. The other ones just don’t control the same. Love the balancing and everything about this one. Hope they bring this one back
Thank you for reminding me how amazing this game is, and reminding me how much time I spend playing that game with my family. I need to play it again now
I just started playing double dash for the first time and your remark about baby park being more fun because of the items is SO true. Went from my least favorite in DS/8 to my favorite in DD
If a channel with over 100k subs could be underappreciated it's this channel. I feel like if youre into Nintendo especially into that 2000s era of Nintendo, then this channel is essential watching. As a huge handheld gamer (specifically DS and 3DS), this channel is always creates a hit when it touches on those topics.
1:57 I'd argue that the Babies that 8 introduces are lazier inclusions than the Koopalings because at least the Koopalings are pre-existing characters and have evidently distinct models and stats; Baby Daisy and Baby Rosalina are just Baby Peach with different hairstyles and color schemes.
After recently reacquiring this game after not having played it in years, it's honestly my favorite Mario Kart game. It's so fast, the handling model feels great and stylish, the item roster is excellent, and the courses are near perfect.
me personally, I just don't like special items. I feel like they take away from the chaos of mario kart and kinda just discourage me from playing whoever I want in order to shoot for a particular item
Mario Kart Double Dash was released the same year I was born, so I grew up playing it and all the pre-existing mario karts but always loved Double Dash the most. The way the karts controlled and looked, bouncing around with actual suspension made me feel so immersed in the game. Definitely one of the best mario kart games to date still!
If anybody's interested in taking a look at an evolution on the double racer mechanic, I'd recommend Gensou Skydrift. Instead of having a person and a cart, you have two people, one of which rides atop the other. The character on the bottom determines driving characteristics, and the character on top handles items. You can hit a button to swap who's on top, which is very good for changing handling characteristics for dealing with corners. Unfortunately the game's course design is pretty bad.
Fun Fact this is the only Mario Kart game in the series to maintain 60fps during splitscreen. Certain tracks have obstacles and visuals removed but that makes single player feel more special.
17:57 I honestly barely hear anything about Wii Stan’s shitting on Double Dash, so I really don’t know where that’s coming from. For me, I love Mario Kart Wii and that’s my favorite in the series, but I actually played Double Dash before it and I still absolutely love the game for its uniqueness and charm. I come back to both every once in a while and while they both control very differently, I prefer that due to Double Dash having such a unique setup. On top of that, Double Dash is easily one of the most nostalgic games for me, especially with the music and the game’s version of Rainbow Road. Both are awesome games and Double Dash is ranked 3rd in Mario Kart games behind Wii and 8. Also Mario Kart Wii does have the CPUs times in races, it didn’t end with Double Dash.
Double dash was always my favorite mario kart just because of the whole 2 for 1 gimmick alone. There are 2 words that I can describe DD in a nutshell, fun & chaotic. It makes me so happy that just recently, I managed to find a new copy of DD in perfect condition after my cousin completely scratched up my old copy. Playing it on my gamecube again made me have the biggest grin
I mean, if you think that's nostalgic, think about the commercials that were advertising the product. A freakin' airport with ladies and gentlemen in slow go karts literally throwing luggage at each other, that was fun to watch. Or Kirby Air Ride's commercial which for a long time it felt like a fever dream, similar with Pokemon Channel's USA commercial. But thankfully both of those commercials are on youtube, although hard to find the Pokemon Channel one unless someone had a really good High Quality version of that Commercial.
Can definitely see alot where you are coming from with the verdict! During the verdict I had compared DD a bit to Splatoon 1. Such has how you probably might have to take a bit to adjust to the game if you are someone who has only played the newer entries. I also compared them in the sense that both games took risks (moreso S1 because it was a new IP ‘n all and it could be updated) and even if not all of the risks went well, I still give it some points for trying. Such as Splatoon 1 with its maps, even though it had some weaker ones such as Moray Towers, Saltspray Rig, and Camp Triggerfish, I still give the maps some credit since you couldn’t really find anything like them anywhere else. Also both games are chaotic lol, and did alot for the series. Not saying that all games have to take risks since there’s no need to reinvent the wheel, but it can help keep things interesting if done right.
This and Mario Party 6 were my first video games ever! I agree that the items are done incredibly well in this one;I sooooo wish special items were able to come back, in some capacity with how Tour does them. We also just need duo karts back in general. This game really was the blueprint!
Double Dash was my first Mario Kart, as well as my first GameCube game. Going back, the controls are a lot worse than newer games in the series, although I can't compare it to earlier games, since I haven't played them. I really enjoyed it at the time, though. The amount of personality the game has is wonderful; I really like the amount of character interaction compared to other games in the series.
Me and my friends have a yearly get together specifically to play Double Dash. We'll play it like a 4-player co-op game in GP mode and it is so much fun. I think we just hit 11 years of this tradition. This game will always stand the test of time for us.
@destroyermcw626 real. but mario kart dd is the most replayable because of how unique it is. because once mk9 comes out, 8 dx will be irrelevant while dd still has a reason to be played whereas for the most part, playing the current mario kart will do just fine for every other entry
I don’t know why but I’ve always been a huge double dash defender, even though I grew up on the wii and never played it. It just looks so fun and charming I get upset whenever someone says they don’t like it
I never play double dash, my 1st Mario Kart was DS (my favourite too), I always thought baby park super boring and didnt understand why have so many fans, after the baby park video and this one I finnally understand. It is because the track is great on Double Dash.
great review! I wasn't even aware there were detractors of DD so i was a bit confused by the title. I've also never really understood why so many people want Wario Coliseum as a retro track, i feel like much like your baby park example that track is so dependent on the actual mechanics of DD (mainly how the drifting works) that in order to get it to work with newer mario kart drifting they would have to change it so much that it wouldn't be fun anymore.
as a kid mario kart wii was the one i mainly played but we also had a gamecube, and i loved double dash as a kid. i had no idea people didn't like it! nice video btw :)
19:09 i honestly like that anti-gravity gliders and under water arrive used in a lot of tracks because all it is, is a way to have more different kinds of track designs so theres no reason to use it on every track since not every track needs it
I wish DD/DS' drift style was kept. It has practical depth and actually engages in interesting ways with the track, unlike the normal drift style, and especially unlike the dull "press the jump button = get speed" trick system in Wii and onwards. And it evolved into snaking!
I don't get it you say that "characters aren't unbalanced" and then start to explain why some exclusive items are objectively better than others. Not mentioning how King Boo and Petey are literally broken
As somebody who grew up during the Wii generation and played both Mario kart double dash and Wii, I can confirm that I had a bit of blood towards double dash. The reason is because a few years before Wii came out, my older brother got the luxury of playing double dash at a friend's house, but I was too young to play video games at that time. When we got the Wii with it's respective MK, I had more time to practice that one out on my own, and realized that I could get speed boosts from doing tricks, which I knew was key to catching up with my older brother. Shortly after getting Mario kart Wii, we eventually got double dash, and after looking through all the tracks, I realized that there were so many ramps and bumps in that game that could have gone perfectly with tricks and it just felt wrong being able not being able to get those extra speed boosts off of those ramps. It kind of boils down to what you said about the Super Mario Galaxy games. That and maybe there was a bit of sibling rivalry with biases towards different installments. Luckily, I have been replaying both of them and despite their differences, I've been acing them like a charm!
Mario Kart Double Dash is my first Mario kart and got me into Mario as a whole. Double Dash is definitely one of my favorite Mario karts ever along with DS and Wii
The Legend Of The Most Controversial Video Title
_edit: I was incorrect about MKDD being the last game to show you CPU times.
Dubel dash not hated it overrated
@@GozieSounds if almost everyone says it's overrated, wouldn't that indirectly make it controversial since one half is sucking the games dick and the other half is shitting on it?
@@GozieSounds wouldn't that make it controversial if half of the people are saying the game is amazing and everyone else is saying it's overrated?
I feel like the did kinda commit to bikes in wii because the tracks don't have a lot of turns
TBH I had no idea Double Dash was controversial and hated by many. I had only ever heard people praise the game.
Same. It's my favorite one due to its mechanics
It was my favorite growing up, we always had a blast playing it.
It's still a good game, considering I'm pretty good at the newer ones.
Shoot, I loved it. To me, it's much better than Mario Kart 8.
Same I thought everyone loved it
1 thing I missed about these games is how the karts are based on the characters. Dk ridding a barrel or a jeep is so much more charming than just picking the ultimate kart combination.
This is what i miss most from 8. i wish every character had their own kart and THEN there were extras
"karts are based" mmm yes
agreed, the custom karts are fun but I'd honestly rather see the preset karts return in future entries, their designs were just so fun and creative (or at least make kart customization more balanced and give crazier options, weird stuff like the gold mantis or dry bomber from MKDS for kart types would be fun)
As much hate as the game gets I think Mario Kart Tour has the best balance between preset karts and custom karts
@@ballisticboo7808 Next mario kart should use Tour's formula cause its better than 8 deluxe's by far.
An underrated mechanic that no one mentions ever but I appreciate is that the characters stack the items in their hands and if you get hit before using them you lose all of them besides 1, adds another layer to the focus on items in this game.
Yeah that’s something I like to. You need to be careful to not lose your items, but you still keep 1 so you’re not totally screwed if you get hit.
Also something fun that newer games don't have is hitting your oponents
I played crash tag team racing that’s why and that had a story so that was cool
@@thanos_x23Newer games have that too
Also in defense of Kirby Air Ride, it makes sense that being hit doesn't immediately do much there, since that game is balanced around the carts each having different HP stats, which when depleted, put you out of commission for an extremely long time. Items have more uses per item roulette in that game, so it's balanced around landing repeated hits.
Air Ride is super fun, just a different type of fun than Double Dash
They're both 2 of my favorite games and I played them all the time with my friends as a kid 😄

Mario Tennis from N64 did it first (waluigi, daisy, birdo and babies)
@RetraCarteR I guess Toadsworth? Probably Peach if Daisy didn't exist.

You'd be surprised, half of the people I know personally that played double dash hates it.

Speaking of which, in that track, you can see Shroom Ridge in the distance.
shroom ridge? do you mean mushroom bridge?
@@tsumi0da Yes
Super Mario Sunshine did something similar with its levels. You could see the other stages from different parts of the island. I guess Nintendo was into that sort of thing back then. I wish they would do it again.

as long as they dont try TOO hard to be unique.
I find the whole Wii players bashing on Double Dash debacle to be funny because only a few years ago the exact opposite was happening up until people who grew up with Wii became nostalgic to the game and now you don't hear a lot of folks praising Double Dash as a result cause that nostalgia praise had passed
And before that it was the N64 players praising Mario Kart 64, the cycle of nostalgia continues
I mean thus giy sucks at wii since he doesn't do burn outs/standing mini turbos after getting hit
The random rivarly between gamecube and wii fans will never not be funny, double dash vs wii, sunshine vs galaxy, melee vs brawl

to be completly honest, i don't think it would make sense if the koopalings shared the same slot since they're completely different characters. i think the worst case is with characters like tanooki mario, that don't really make a lot of sense in being separated from mario, same thing with cat peach
Those characters have different stats compared to their normal variants, no other characters do that in the game, which is probably why they did that.
Seems to be a thing with the older Mario Karts. I noticed this as well with DD, SMK, and even DS here and there.

16 tracks ain’t enough for me
Honestly I feel like MKWii was a downgrade from DD in art direction, it just seems more bland.
@@Chicky_LumpsWii honestly looks so disgusting and does not age well at all
Wii and Double Dash are perhaps the best Mario Kart games in terms of pure raw mechanics. A game with Wii's stunt/acrobatic mechanics and DD's dual racer mechanics would be the PERFECT Mario Kart in my eyes :)
Love the super granular breakdown, man!!!
MKDS snaking as well
One thing that I think bears mentioning is the voice acting that adds to the chaos of the game.
My personal pair was always Paratroopa & Baby Bowser in 50-100cc and Paratroopa & Bowser in 150cc.
As a wii fan who grew up on that game
I've been dying to try double dash. Seriously looks awesome.
Edit: for context, I used "unironicly" in a context where "seriously" would've fit better because of habit. So I fixed that.
Why you anyone like double dash ironically
@@plooper14 People online don’t know what unironically means
@@connor9568 It is either that or they thing they are the same
Same
Wii is my favorite Mario Kart but double dash is right up there with it.
If you can somehow find it under $50 I would definitely get it.
Also he wasn't charging a mini turbo and just accelerating normally in the wii footage so it's just a skill issues
i remember back in the 2004ish, i went to a barbershop with my lil sister and while waiting, they had a gamecube and double dash. i never played the game or heard of it before, but intuitively, i was the driver and she was in charge of items. the controls were so smooth, we got 1st every time. we chose the babies for no reason, and baby park changed everything for us. we were hysterically laughing at the chaos. we were so good, if we got bananas, i would tell her "ok, throw it forward, but do it when i say to." i would line myself up, go "NOW" and we would snipe anyone in front of us. our dynamic duo was diddy kong (me) and bowser jr (my sis) so we always had the big shell and big banana.
i played mario kart wii and even though i was a boss at that game, online and playing with family, i still believe double dash is way more fun. people who like winning or playing the funky kong meta will always say wii is better, but double dash is just silly, more fun. i looove your take on items, sooo facts bruh. i want this game to come back, i remember getting hit by items and laughing, enjoying, same energy as you like "WE STILL GOT THIS." but mario kart 8, wii, it's damn near over sometimes and you go "ugh." this game is a chef's kiss
awwwww that sounds so fun
10:00 absolutely agree, double dash is my favorite because how satisfying the controls are
Plus, Dodging redshells and even blue shells with a drift, absolutely phenomenal
11:00 YES, getting hit by an item in double dash doesn't feel annoying, if anything it actually gets me laugh a lot of the time
12:00 okay I just gotta get this out of the way, literally everything you've said about double is exactly how I feel, it's good to know that people see what I mean
What strategy is there besides deciding if the reserve item is worth using the held item to get to it?
(Unless the game has a really bad connection online) That's part of the strategy
Also, a blue shell destroys items held behind you, but not items you haven't used yet. It's best to wait on defense items until the last second so that a blue shell won't destroy them.
@@theAstarrr I did not know that first part, but I still don't see why you would hold onto a coin if you're just going to get a defensive item anyway.
I’m a huge fan of Mario Kart Wii but I find Double Dash to be an absolute blast to play, even if the controls are a bit weird to start out
As someone who grew up playing Wii I just got this game and I love it!
It’s illegal they didn’t add Wario Colosseum.
I think it's great that basically every mario kart has its own distinct mechanics and gameplay
I didn't know this game was controversial
it isnt
Thats because it isnt.
Youre watching manufactured outraged
I love how quick and snappy the controls are in Double Dash. That alone makes it my favorite Mario Kart game.
Yeah I've always found that to be a weird take- they're different characters
Agreed. He dissed my boy Morton.
I still go back to it regularly and although I do love all the other mario karts nothing quite hits the same as DD
Great video!
15 years later and now I finally know.
double dash is so underrated fr, especially what you said about pacing and item downtime, i hope mk9 brings it back
My first Mario kart. I assumed all Mario kart had two people in a kart. No other game has been as fun since
I never grew up with Double Dash, I actually played it last year, and I immediately loved it and it’s now my favorite Mario Kart game.
You can’t get double coins in 8 deluxe unless there's lag or there's custom items
@@N12015 Yeah, I don’t think it would work too well on 8, but I do think the system is better overall in DD
Imagine being able to swap slots to get rid of a item and keep 1 defensive item to try and roll for a horn, too op
Nostalgia mainly, but I personally also really like how bikes work in it, even if it makes karts obsolete
I had Wii in the past but not long enough to be super dedicated to the game. I imagine that those who are are into the modding community that and major Funky Kong stans.
Because 8 and 8 deluxe are ugly, and I haven't tried DD yet (although I want to)
Double Dash will always and forever be my favorite Mario Kart game. Partly for nostalgia and partly for how much fun the mechanics are.
Double Dash is by far the best. The other ones just don’t control the same. Love the balancing and everything about this one. Hope they bring this one back
This why i dont like double dash.
The crontrols are slippy af.
another thing i keep on forgetting that ive missed is ITEMS LOOSE ON THE TRACK! like i miss picking up a star that was just chillin on the track 💀
Thank you for reminding me how amazing this game is, and reminding me how much time I spend playing that game with my family. I need to play it again now
I just started playing double dash for the first time and your remark about baby park being more fun because of the items is SO true. Went from my least favorite in DS/8 to my favorite in DD
Double dash is by far the best in the franchise
The tracks are claustrophobic and too wonky and the road is ice
me personally, I just don't like special items.
12:31 is the most accurate portrayal of these two games i've ever seen
Double dash was the best in the series up until 8 or the ds version. I’ve gone back to it and it still slaps
I'm a Wii fan but I love double dash
I have NEVER seen a character combo more iconic than freaking birdo and waluigi. Great video
Yes the controls suck and some tracks
Me and my friends have a yearly get together specifically to play Double Dash. We'll play it like a 4-player co-op game in GP mode and it is so much fun. I think we just hit 11 years of this tradition. This game will always stand the test of time for us.
as a nostalgic wii player, I love doubledash. It is so fun to play with friends or alone.
Friends yes Alone I dunno those COM cheat and rubber band while you have to deal with the wonky icy controls
@destroyermcw626 bro sherbet land is hell in 150. also yeah the cpus are brutal and imo the hardest 3d mariokart cpus.
@@FryGuy909 Thank god Sherbet land on Mario kart 8 is not only beautiful but better with new pathways as well and a glider
@destroyermcw626 real. but mario kart dd is the most replayable because of how unique it is. because once mk9 comes out, 8 dx will be irrelevant while dd still has a reason to be played whereas for the most part, playing the current mario kart will do just fine for every other entry
@@FryGuy909 That mechanic is cool but those god dang controls and slippery roads ruins it for me even if I win.
I don’t know why but I’ve always been a huge double dash defender, even though I grew up on the wii and never played it. It just looks so fun and charming I get upset whenever someone says they don’t like it
Do not let the Wii fans find this video.
How does it feel to be the second lowest sold Nintendo console? gamecuber
Moral of the story:
People hate change. Even when it’s fun and creative. I hate people sometimes.
That's not my issue with this game, I love everything about it... EXCEPT for the physics. I've always felt like the game felt like it was on ice.
as a kid mario kart wii was the one i mainly played but we also had a gamecube, and i loved double dash as a kid. i had no idea people didn't like it! nice video btw :)
I think they didn't let you swap items in deluxe so that u wont save a bullet bill or star for later in the race

What's with the sudden hate for Double Dash? Last I've heard, it was often considered one of the best Mario Karts next to Wii
Mario Kart Double Dash is my first Mario kart and got me into Mario as a whole. Double Dash is definitely one of my favorite Mario karts ever along with DS and Wii
Haven't heard anyone say anything negative about double dash as of now
That means the video worked
