5:36 MP the top 100 actually did have tug o war on the minigame selection, so basically there has been 19 years that a rotating controll stick minigame wasnt made since MP1
"Lower lows, but higher highs" perfectly sums up 3. I like its QoL improvements over 2 (like more items) but I prefer 2 since it has fewer things that bug me. I gotta disagree on one thing, though: MP1's still got the best soundtrack of the series, done by the great Yasunori Mitsuda himself. Warp Pipe, Rainbow Castle, Engine Room, Eternal Star, minigame rules, victory music, most minigame tracks... it's a beautiful game to listen to, and I wish later games kept its soundtrack.
This video is great but you got one tiny detail wrong. The rotating-the-stick (TM) minigames actually first reappeared in the 2019 3ds game "Mario Party: The Top 100". I don't blame you for getting this wrong, I think I'm one of the, like, 3 people that knows that game even exists lol.
I can only IMAGINE playing those games on the circle pad was like beating the hard computers in Sonic Shuffle. XD For those who don't know.... every time a mini game plays, if it's not Psychic Sonic, put the controller down and just take a break. XD (Psychic Sonic if you know the trick gets you like 160 rings easy!)
I think mario party is a very underrated Nintendo series. They are perfect multiplayer fun. I am so glad that they returned to being um.. not being horrible with superstars
Super Mario Party is not only in the Top 10 best selling Switch games of all time, but the in the Top 10 best selling Mario games of ALL TIME. Hardly an underrated series!
@ZenoSSBU I'm not speaking of the *quality* I'm speaking of the *popularity* , but on that note, Mario Party Superstars is approaching 6 million sales. If you want to speak of a real underrated Nintendo series, look no further than Rhythm Heaven. Mario Party Superstars alone sold better than every Rhythm Heaven game combined
I got superstars and played for a bit but its still still not as good as mario party 2-7. They somehow recreated maps and minigames with better graphics and software and made them worse
SliokHawk thank you for making one of the best videos I have seen on RUclips in a long while! This was a freaking dream and like I really admire they way you put this whole video together. I love Mario party with all of my soul and I love the points you made and seeing your prospective on each game. I appreciate the hard work and dedication you put in to making this video and I look forward to seeing the next Mario party video!!!
As someone who never played the original trilogy, thank you for this video! It was very informative, and it's always a pleasure to see new content from you. Looking forward to the GameCube entries!
You mean to tell me there are people out there who cannot time the wheel on Waluigi’s Island? Apart from that one ludicrously fast speed, all of the others have never been a problem for my friends or I.
I've played the N64 Mario Party games and I'll have to admit that they were very solid, the first one while brutal it's that what it makes them special, I would say is the kaizo of the saga. MP2 I really like that, especially the rollercoaster game mode, a great sequel but, for me, my favourite of the N64 is the third, is so fun and it has some things that are so creative that it makes one of my favourite MP of my life. (My favourite it will be always DS)
Mario Party 1 will forever be my favorite. You can steal coins for free, you can lose coins in minigames, it has the most maps, Wario’s Battle Canyon exists, you earn your victories with the palm minigames, and of course Chance Time. So much bs happens and it’s an absolute blast
I am so glad I found your channel - Not only do you cover games that I am passionate about, but I love your point of view and the ways you structure your videos. It's a guaranteed subscribe and like in every video for me. Wish you the best!
Mario Party 9 was my first and I can't go back ever since I played Mario Party 3 at my cousin's house a year ago. It was so much better than what I'd thought was good
If you could get DLC for Mario Party Superstars. What boards would you want? Also I would love to see any of the tracks from 3 be remixed in future spin-offs
5:40 - to be fair, a Switch ProCon's left analog stick is a LOT 'softer' than the diamond-tipped drill that was the N64's stick...i feel like that little warning is a bit Over-Cautious (which is fair, i guess, Nintendo feels its better than not being cautious enough)
The arrow spinner in Waluigi's Island is not luck based. You need to press A when the direction you want is lit up. If you slow down this footage, you'll see the frame when A is pressed and the player is always sent in the direction of the lit up arrow.
I only ever really played Mario Party 1, 3, 4, and DS growing up, with some rentals of the others here and there. 4 was always my favorite, but if we're talking the N64 trilogy, 1 obviously doesn't hold up just because of the minigames where you rotate/break your analog stick. I played half a board of 3 a couple months ago, and besides the randomness, I think the game is still a lot of fun and deserves more credit. Great minigames. Always heard great things about 2 over the years, but I don't think I ever played it.
First time actually seeing any of your videos, the N64 Mario Party games are actually a huge nostalgia thing for me, especially when you touched on the MP3 duel gamemode where you collect baddie partners. I loved that mode so much. I cannot WAIT for you to touch on Mario Party 5's car garage mode. I LOVED that mode as a kid, and making all the different combinations was so fun.
I've only played Mario Party 2 and 3 and this is my board ranking: 1 - Space Land (MP2) 2 - Spiny Desert (MP3) 3 - Horror Land (MP2) 4 - Waluigi's Island (MP3) 5 - Bowser Land (MP2) 6 - Western Land (MP2) 7 - Creepy Caverns (MP3) 8 - Mystery Land (MP2) 9 - Pirate Land (MP2) 10 - Chilly Waters (MP3) 11 - Woody Woods (MP3) 12 - Deep Bloober Sea (MP3)
I actually love Mario Party 1 for the reason for how brutal and unforgiving it is. It's still my least favorite of the N64 entries, but it is unique, and there will never be another Mario Party game like MP1, and I love it!
Love the Mario Party series so I'm happy to see you talk about them with this series! 1: Worth at least checking out (definitely not as your first one) to see where it all started, but unless you feel like playing a more brutal if not straight up unfair game you'd better leave it alone after that. 2: Fantastic game for anyone, especially newcomers considering the simpler gameplay compared to later instalments, thanks to how fun and charming it is! 3: My favorite of the N64 games, best for expert players thanks to the revised item mechanic and item pool, new spaces etc., plus Duel Mode is exclusive to it (also shoutout to it having the first actual Story Mode in the series)!
3 is my favorite, notice the bowser pose as my picture. Been like that for years. Anyhow, 2 & 3 are both amazing, but it seems I have better memories surrounding 3.
This vid has made me realise that I’ve only ever played 2 Mario party games in my life and they are Mario party DS and Mario party 10…. My childhood was just Mario karts, 2D Marios, 3D Marios and Mario power tennis (Wii). I never really got into the spin-offs.
I’ve only played 4 and then we lost our system in a house fire caused by my neighbors. That’s a longer tragic story in its self. But this was a great backstory in what I missed before my earlier gaming days.
I've never understood those who say the N64 Mario Parties look bad, I still swear by them being among the best looking games in the series (even if some concessions have to be made for it). The pre-rendered backgrounds used for the board maps are SO detailed, there's not an inch of wasted space in them. You can really tell the shift away from pre-rendered was a struggle, too, since Mario Party 4's boards are all just metal beams floating above a pretty generic background. 5, 6, and 7 managed to make boards that were more detailed than 4 (with the advantage of added verticality that the 64 games couldn't have), but even then there's nowhere near as many details as 64's boards. The only game that I think comes close is Superstars, but even there it's missing a good deal of things that the 64 boads had- Superstars Horror Land, for example, has no leaking ketchup bottle or highway full of ghosts. As far as Mario Party 2 vs Mario Party 3 goes, I definitely liked 3 more as a kid due to all of its added features, but when going back to play them, 2 absolutely reigns supreme. Aside from what was mentioned in the video, it's just a much more balanced game. There aren't any absurd broken items in 2, and it has the most balanced 1v3 minigames in the series. 2's boards, aside from Mystery Land, are designed in such a way that you can make pretty extreme comebacks via a tight strategy, rather than just having to rely on luck. 3 just doesn't hit those notes much at all.
The perfect Mario Party game IMO would be a rom hack that puts all 1-2-3 in the same game. You could choose any board from MP1-2-3, all minigames from 1-2-3 are in, and the item system from MP3
Very good video, I like how you gave each game the credit they were due instead of saying one is flatly better than another. Mario Party 3 was one of my childhood games so it was nice to see it again. Looking forward to the Gamecube video.
It's good to see someone praising the duel mode in MP3, for some reason most videos about this game on RUclips all dog on that mode even though it's just a side mode and pretty in-depth for one! I also LOVE the Game Guy games, sometimes when playing with friends I purposefully avoid the star route just to try to land on a Game Guy space, the adrenaline of betting a ton of money in it is unrivalled. But yeah, amazing video! I pretty much share the same opinion as you on everything you said here. 3 is my favorite one for sure, but I also love 2, while I rarely ever play 1, even though I loved renting it when I was young. Looking forward to the GameCube video!
Mario Party 3 will always be my favorite. I think it mostly comes down to the huge power plays you can make with the right combination of luck and strategy... and abusing the reverse mushroom. Such a good item that allows for so many stupid, friendship shattering moments. Especially when you use it to triple dip boo and someone tosses their controller through your TV screen.
15:48 RUclips, bite me but i'm only 9 and my two favorite consoles are they gamecube and N64! I love the graphics! I was born in the wrong generation! edit: i'm ten now, this comment is still very true.
Man I still play the Gamecube titles, especially 4 and 6. I wish I could have experienced these games in their prime... Which I could, live just had other plans, still have very fond memories of 1 tho ^^
I think the reason people complained about MP2 and not smash ultimate was because of the way it was marketed. In Ultimate, you know damn well it is a compilation of all of the previous smash games. This game is all the previous content with a few additions. You know exactly that older content re-hashed is what’s in store and *that* is why you got it. However, MP2 lists itself as a brand spanking new entry in the series. The back of the box lists “64 new and updated mini-games” so people would probably expect mostly new with around 5-10 returning ones. However, a little under a third returned from the previous game, it feels like they got ripped off from how the back of the box understated how many would be returning. (Even though it never listed how many would return)
it's kinda wild to me this question is even posed because to me and everyone my age Mario Party 2 is the go-to title at any house party and such, it's a no brainer. The same goes for all other Mario related sports games. Golf, Tennis, Kart, you name it. The N64 versions are the most purist of them. No stupid gimmicks, no overbearing luck factor, just straight up, easy to learn, hard to master gameplay. No frills or bullshit. guess it's easy to forget we're already in our 30s and we are not the target audience for videos like that
Without having watched the video I can wholeheartedly say yes! Specially MP2, it holds up excellently. MP3 is pretty good too. MP1 is simpler and doesn't hold up as well as the others, but it can still be a good time.
Thank you for praising the battle mode in Mario Party 3! I loved that mode and would try to encourage friends and my brother to play it because I liked it so much. It tracks pretty well with me though because I would later go on to become a fan of games like Magic (shame that Magic is a dumpster fire now thanks to Wizards). You can see the similar elements with how you try to deplete your opponent's life total using creatures you summon with different stats. You even have creatures "blocking" attacks on you much like how you block attacks in Magic using your creatures. There's also a random element of what creature you get to summon mirroring the randomness of which cards you draw in a game. It's good stuff.
Mario Party 1's incredibly brutal. Honestly, I can't blame my family for not wanting to play it. Mario Party 2 sounds like a whole load of fun. Mario Party 3's baddies thingy needs to come back, and overall, it seems like a major step forward from the first 2 games. Oh wait, it's inconsistent, yet great.
The game guy theme was reused in the gambling games in Mario Party Advance! I love MPA. It's not really a Mario Party Game, but it's a great slice of life adventure.
12:41 I have actually been trapped in that Blooper Wheel area for an entire game. Constantly going in and out, while never truly leaving that corner of the map. And the one time I did (through a warp pipe), I ended up landing on the wheel again like, the next turn. And the only star I was able to buy was the one in that wheel... and it gets fuckin' stolen from me in Chance Time.
“Any map where you need to stock up on lamps to even get stars isn’t that good of a map” Bro that’s literally every board in Mario party 4. I can tell you’re going to have fun with that one.
1:03 “the first look into this new exciting genre of game” trying my hardest not to pull an “um, actually 🤓” here but apparently mario party is only the second game of its kind made by hudson. it was apparently preceded by a game based on, of all things, tamagotchi. it has a similar gameplay loop to mario party except everyone’s competitively raising tamagotchis against each other and coins (in this game credits) let you perform different commands. this is real. i did not make this up. this is like my weird go-to video game fact that i bring up simply because not a lot of people know about it. side note: this game is also apparently one of the hardest n64 games to emulate. not because of any special hardware features or anything but it can just be a bitch to load up
1 I tried and got pretty bored in fast, also its control stick spinning did give me a torn blister as a kid. 2 Is amazing I love the upgrades as you said. 3 is where they got it almost perfect because you gotta strategize for several things that might happen and there's so many video games it doesn't get boring. Then they dropped the ball with 4 and 5 and improved on 6 and 7 but no return to the quality and charm of 3. The cool thing about the Wii is you can emulate 1 2 and 3 almost perfectly and play 4-8 natively, only one game in 3 is rendered luck based because of a graphical glitch.
4 was a let down, but 5 is fantastic (pushy penguins bruv!) 6 and 7 are okay but there is a severe lack of good boards and too many luck based mini games in those ones sadly, and the rest are pretty bad up until super mario party and mario party superstars
Wasn’t there a stick spinning minigame in island tour? It still was a LONG time between mario party 1 and the next game with control stick spinning minigames tho
This video is really, really good. I love the original Mario Party trilogy (Maybe except some things about one, but still) I think you covered every point perfectly. Also, I think I might be the only one to like Deep Bloober Sea, in fact, it's my favorite board

"But if you want a better designed experience, that's where this next one comes in."
**Domino's Pizza ad**
YES ANOTHER RETROSPECTIVE EPISODE!!! I LOVED THE NSMB RETROSPECTIVE!
LEBOMBELGU!!! LESELMAMU!!!
Silok you did so well with the presentation of this video. You nailed it here, this video is better presented than any other video you have made.
The editing in this is really good!! The intro montage to each game and the way you transitioned from one game to another 👨🍳💋
LEBOMBELGU!!! LESELMAMU!!!
As someone who never played the original trilogy, thank you for this video! It was very informative, and it's always a pleasure to see new content from you. Looking forward to the GameCube entries!
LEBOMBELGU!!! LESELMAMU!!!
I really hope he continues this series with Mario party and stuff.
Great video, I’m excited to see the rest of this video series. Keep up the good work
They're definitely worth playing if you grew up with them or want to know the origins of the series. I can still play N64 Mario Parties to this day.
Just realized you had almost 190k subs. Feels like yesterday that you were sitting a bit below 20,000. Glad you’ve made it so far!
Before the video even starts
Mario Party: no
Mario Party 2: YES
Mario Party 3: HELL yes
That blooper wheel
THAT BLOOPER WHEEL
sent shivers down my spine
Mario Party 1 will forever be my favorite. You can steal coins for free, you can lose coins in minigames, it has the most maps, Wario’s Battle Canyon exists, you earn your victories with the palm minigames, and of course Chance Time. So much bs happens and it’s an absolute blast
Fair honestly
Mario Party 2 is definitely my favorite!
I am so glad I found your channel - Not only do you cover games that I am passionate about, but I love your point of view and the ways you structure your videos. It's a guaranteed subscribe and like in every video for me. Wish you the best!
Hell yeah, always a good day when a new SilokHawk video drops!
If I had a choice make it Waluigi's Island but improved, although Chilly Waters can be done, as I don't think there's an ice themed level in MPS.
Luigi's Engine Room or Wario's Battle Canyon from MP1, Pirate or Western Land from MP2. The Duel Board system from MP3
22:20 Uh... it's been 10 months
Short answer: Yes 🎉
I love your videos, they always manage to put a smile on my face :)
14:59 “YOU FINA-” “OK THE-”
Solid review! I grew up on GameCube but I think it’s finally time for me to visit the N64 entries
Mario party 2 is my all time favorite game. Seeing it and hearing the game sounds makes me happy every time
First time actually seeing any of your videos, the N64 Mario Party games are actually a huge nostalgia thing for me, especially when you touched on the MP3 duel gamemode where you collect baddie partners. I loved that mode so much. I cannot WAIT for you to touch on Mario Party 5's car garage mode. I LOVED that mode as a kid, and making all the different combinations was so fun.
14:59 Caught me off-guard. Good job.
I've only played Mario Party 2 and 3 and this is my board ranking:
1 - Space Land (MP2)
2 - Spiny Desert (MP3)
3 - Horror Land (MP2)
4 - Waluigi's Island (MP3)
5 - Bowser Land (MP2)
6 - Western Land (MP2)
7 - Creepy Caverns (MP3)
8 - Mystery Land (MP2)
9 - Pirate Land (MP2)
10 - Chilly Waters (MP3)
11 - Woody Woods (MP3)
12 - Deep Bloober Sea (MP3)
11:24 There are 7 boards, you forgot Rules Land ;)
I’ve been playing bc Mario party a lot with my friend recently and it seems like which ever one you grew up with is your fave. Mp2 for me
3 is my favorite, notice the bowser pose as my picture.
Even though the first Mario party has many problems, at least the economy wasn't broken like in SMP and Superstars were you get coins by breathing.
I’ve only played 4 and then we lost our system in a house fire caused by my neighbors. That’s a longer tragic story in its self. But this was a great backstory in what I missed before my earlier gaming days.
The newer ones don't have the charm that the N64 and even the GameCube ones had, so in my eyes, 1-7 will always be the best
The first THREE Mario Party games are definitely worth playing.
Hello Silokhawk! I have recently become a big fan of your videos, and just want to say they are very good👍🙂
I remember mario party after dark by screwattack
Those sesions they had made me want to play this game so bad XD
Anybody ever just say f*ck it & bet the house on baby Chomp getting you that 64X multiplier eating that damn cake?
The reason these games are still worth playing is cuz the newer ones can’t even compare in the slightest
*cough cough* Mario Party 9 through Super *cough cough*
🤣
As someone who has played every home console title and most of the handheld titles, I'm curious as to how no other title is anywhere close to the n64.
@@Isaac0110 Pretty sure "newer" means Modern (9 and after/once ND Cube took over from Hudson Soft).
@@autobotstarscream765 That's a fair statement. Aside from the switch games, I'd say there's no debate.
"Welcome to Mario Party! F#$% YOU: The Game!" XD
Before even watching - YES they are
Mario Party 3 will always be my favorite.
I just wanna say, your editing on the intros for the games are really nice
I like the fact that in Marioparty 3, the characters scream the title in Dutch. This is because they pronounce 3 like dree.
And with a Dutch accent.
No frills or bullshit.
guess it's easy to forget we're already in our 30s and we are not the target audience for videos like that
born 91 and ya
mario party 2 has the best music, best games, best maps, but what really makes it the best is the cosplay
Without having watched the video I can wholeheartedly say yes! Specially MP2, it holds up excellently. MP3 is pretty good too. MP1 is simpler and doesn't hold up as well as the others, but it can still be a good time.
LEBOMBELGU!!! LESELMAMU!!!
hey man do you plan to make that gamecube parties video soon?
“Boom that’s it that’s all you need” instant sequalitis flashbacks
17:45 The internet in a nutshell
Mario Party 1's incredibly brutal. Honestly, I can't blame my family for not wanting to play it.
Mario Party 2 sounds like a whole load of fun.
Mario Party 3's baddies thingy needs to come back, and overall, it seems like a major step forward from the first 2 games. Oh wait, it's inconsistent, yet great.
I need 4 through 7!
Fantastic montage work as usual
The game guy theme was reused in the gambling games in Mario Party Advance! I love MPA. It's not really a Mario Party Game, but it's a great slice of life adventure.
12:41 I have actually been trapped in that Blooper Wheel area for an entire game.
Constantly going in and out, while never truly leaving that corner of the map. And the one time I did (through a warp pipe), I ended up landing on the wheel again like, the next turn.
And the only star I was able to buy was the one in that wheel... and it gets fuckin' stolen from me in Chance Time.
2:42 OH NO THE FLASHBACKS OH NONONONONONO
Mario Party 1 just sounds like hell to play!
Mario Party 2 is by far my favorite.
Mario Party 8 is my absolute favorite. I'm kind of worried for the review on that...
“Any map where you need to stock up on lamps to even get stars isn’t that good of a map” Bro that’s literally every board in Mario party 4. I can tell you’re going to have fun with that one.
1:03 “the first look into this new exciting genre of game”
trying my hardest not to pull an “um, actually 🤓” here but apparently mario party is only the second game of its kind made by hudson.
it was apparently preceded by a game based on, of all things, tamagotchi. it has a similar gameplay loop to mario party except everyone’s competitively raising tamagotchis against each other and coins (in this game credits) let you perform different commands.
this is real. i did not make this up. this is like my weird go-to video game fact that i bring up simply because not a lot of people know about it.
side note: this game is also apparently one of the hardest n64 games to emulate. not because of any special hardware features or anything but it can just be a bitch to load up
1 I tried and got pretty bored in fast, also its control stick spinning did give me a torn blister as a kid.
Didn't MP3 have a Wii VC release? That should be glitch-less...
4 was a let down, but 5 is fantastic (pushy penguins bruv!)
6 and 7 are okay but there is a severe lack of good boards and too many luck based mini games in those ones sadly, and the rest are pretty bad up until super mario party and mario party superstars
