Hovak: I think you're a great dad. Ellen is lucky to have you. And I think you're lucky to have her too. I like the way you're doing this as well because you're not bringing her entire life onto the web and exposing everything, you're really only bringing her music to light and that gives her lots of privacy and an opportunity to live her life without everything being invaded. By the way, I really love your new production of her rendition of The Beatles song Penny Lane. Awesome job guys!

I can't imagine the school of rock ever doing more for her than what her dad already has. He has a good handle on what Ellen needs to be a great bassist & her stage present is already top notch. Maybe steer her toward a performance art / chorus class at school. If they're still offered in the public school system.

Hi there, I enjoy your videos. I work at a School of Rock, but I have only been there 4 months. I've been playing piano and guitar for 25 years and decided to get a part time job there just to have some fun and teach kids everything I know after decades at this. I consider School of rock to be just one vehicle that can help kids reach their destination of being a musician, but it is pretty cool in some ways. I'll list the pros and the cons: every teacher I work with has decades of experience in touring bands and many teachers have masters degrees, the teachers get paid alright (nothing amazing, but it's more than double the minimum wage and you set your own hours), they have all the gear students need, the performance aspects with the bands encourages students to stick with music by making friends, there are even classes for pre-school and kindergarten age kids... all that stuff is awesome. Some of the negatives are the higher price to pay for teachers, front desk staff, rent on the building, etc. It can be tough for parents to pay the cost for lessons and sometimes kids don't really like the focus on performing or the focus on the school of rock app. I've really enjoyed my time so far teaching there and I give it my all every day to help my students. I had my first concert with my students performing on stage three weeks ago and it was amazing to see them go from never playing an instrument to packing a music hall and performing in front of everyone. Maybe School of rock isn't for everyone, but I'm doing everything I can to make it a special place for my students. Keep rocking Ellen!

Thank you Eric! We go to a SoR and I’m so happy to see an instructor’s perspective. I actually found this video because my daughter is looking to start on the bass there (she’s been on guitar for two years and wants to do both).
I’ve been worried that the teachers aren’t paid fairly given the franchise model and the high overhead each school has. I’m sure you could be paid more but I feel that way about all educators.
We don’t use the app all that much for whatever reason. Her instructor usually writes the tab for her. When they work on songs outside of what’s casted, he usually just pulls up the song on RUclips and then teaches it to her from that (adjusted to her level). It’s pretty impressive.
Fully agree that everyone I’ve interacted with at SoR is highly educated in music and qualified to teach. I wouldn’t have sent my kid there otherwise. The staff l profiles are all on the school’s page for parents to research.

Bravo Dad for limiting Ellen's exposure to comments on the Internet. As a father I appreciate what you do. In this crazy information age it is very important to do so.
Excellent that you arranged for Ellen to experience School of Rock. Yes they are primarily $ motivated (unfortunately) but the experience itself is one that is difficult to put a price upon. It will be something Ellen will remember FOREVER. You have highlighted many interesting ways the experience may be improved. Perhaps YOU should start your OWN Rock School that will be an IMPROVED experience for kids. Why not? I bet you can find many famous Rock n' Roll financiers out there who would support a non-profit/creative effort to help kids with music (Alice Cooper, Steve Tyler, Joe Perry, Jack Black, Johnny Depp, Paul Stanley, Geddy Lee, Steve Vai, Alex Lifeson, Bruce Springsteen, Steve Martin, Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, Rob Reiner, etc..to name a few. The list is endless!
Per Ellen's ongoing musical education, there are some very talented and inspirational FEMALE bass players out there you may wish to introduce Ellen to because, not only are they excellent bass players in very special bands, but they compose and SING as well: Tina Weymouth of the band *Talking Heads*, and Kim Deal of the band *Pixies*. Both are very talented and special. Singing while playing the bass is VERY difficult and not something everyone can do.
Lastly, very impressed by Ellen's response to the COLOR of the SKY. Very intelligent response. She has a scientific curiosity that you may wish to encourage. Here's a related question for Ellen NEXT Q&A: "Why is a Rainbow semi-circular?"
Looking forward to your NEXT video.

I have loved RUSH and Geddy Lee since High School in the 1970s, but I really did not become a huge fan until the FAREWELL TO KINGS album came out in 1977. Seen them in concert twice, in 1978, and 1982 in college at Madison Square Garden. Was epic. My best friend since 1988 is a huge RUSH fan too, and he has all the albums.

As a piano & music technology teacher, I find it challenging sometimes to get students enthusiastic about trying harder patterns... because they aren't hard- they require more dedication! Tell Ellen: *Consequence is just the result that happens after you do something.*
Often people use the word when it is a bad thing.
But it does not necessarily have to be bad. It's just the result that happens from a cause.

Great Q&A! You’re growing up F.A.S.T. Ellen! And I think Hovak is brutally right: in YOUR case it’s more about the stage performance and being in a band and playing with other kids than it’s about learning skills. But that’s because you’re in the blissful situation of having a great musician fulltime around you (yeah, that’s you Hovak!) who happens to be also a gifted teacher and who is able to let you explore the world of music pretty all by yourself. No pressure, that’s the most important thing! Music must come from within. And I see that fire for the music burning strong in you already. That’s good.
Oh, and I don’t know who you resemble with that hair. Only that I adore all your different hairstyles! I think you and Mari have a blast with each and every one of them!

My daughter has been doing School of Rock in Portland for about two years. As a parent who isn’t a musician, this has been the best way for us to get our daughter into music. It’s never going to be comparable to what a parent like Hovak can offer to his kid, and I don’t expect it to.
We find that two days a week (lesson and practice) is plenty for most kids who are doing additional lessons and activities. It’s a good place to start out.
As you mentioned, the experience of playing in the band is unique and what sets SoR apart. The kids rehearse 4-6 songs out of a 16-18 song set, so there is downtime there. We started in the pandemic so that socialization time was a pro for us. I doubt most 8-12 year olds would be able to rehearse for two hours straight anyway.
The house bands here at SoR are audition only and pretty impressive. Ellen should have been in that program because those kids are skilled. The house band gigs regularly too.
Agree on the cost, it’s lower in some regions but we have the same pricing here. The franchise model means they have to focus on revenue. It’s a drawback, and a bit gimmicky, but in our experience the people running the lessons and shows are passionate and trained in music education. I never compared it to traditional music lesson pricing because I knew my kid would never stick with that format. I’d absolutely choose an independent school if we had one here.
One unmentioned pro for parents is that their performance shows and choice of music venues is SO MUCH better than sitting through a piano recital.

I love you guys, Ellen is so funny and so are you, Mr Hovak.
Such a great complicity between you as father and daughter, as much as musicians playing together (maybe in Ellen's band one day LoL)
I love to see your training sessions, they are very inspiring to me, as a teacher but also as a student (I play guitar for a long time and I am starting to learn bass).
I hope you'll do more of those training sessions. Love from France !!!
