Belive or not, I also have the IWC Pilot Chrono Petit Prince, and the Speedmaster moonwatch, but this guy is really stunning and I wear always when I fly
These guys were THE official timekeepers at the OLYMPICS and all other major sporting events for decades until the JAPANESE makers like SIEKO rose to prominence. A fantastic wristwatch!
After Seiko, Longines is may favorite brand because they too have a wide range of excellent watches. Once I pay off my Hamilton Khaki Auto that I just bought, Longines may be next on the list.
Love the BigEye! Proper special watches. I've got the steel version and it is stunning, so well designed and brilliantly made. Very good movement and finish. Better pusher action than my Speedy! They wear super well and nice straps on these. A bit of a bargain, considering the quality. Love the titanium on this one. But man, people don't get how good these watches are! In five years we'll look back at getting a Longines chrono for £/$2k, $CAN3k and kick ourselves if we didn't't! There's always the Spirit Chrono if you need the water resistance.
Did you buy it?! I took the dive a couple months ago and I could not be happier with mine!!! I needed a Chronograph and putting a third Longines in my collection was the best decision I could have made. It’s my favorite watch of about 15 pieces that I own. Great video thank you!
I really appreciated this chronograph from the moment I laid eyes on it - when it was still only available in Italy. I still highly rate the aesthetics! That being said, I am the proud owner of a Polaris Chronograph (my grail) and I still feel it sets the benchmark for chronographs. It is really slim, yet has an understated and classy presence, phenomenal lume, and you guessed it, 100m water resistance!
Does anyone know if the 2017 original steel version with the L688.2 comes with a silicon hairspring? I know the Power reserve is slightly less at 54hours vs the 66 hours of the L688.5 movement in this particular titanium release and the very latest steel version.
Can‘t tell for the 2017 model, but Longines Customer Care told me that my steel black dial Avigation BigEye bought a few weeks ago has a silicon hairspring and 54hrs of power reserve.
I can order you one fresh from Longines for a fair price and it should arrive at Kavar's within a week. Email me to discuss it. Email in description or channel about page.
I previously owned the steel big eye, but while it was great looking and a great value, it wore too big on my wrist for my tastes (7 in wrist). Purchased it brand new and never even wore it out of the house. Inevitably traded it to an AD towards the purchase of the blue bay 58.
@@EscapementWatch Dude It's so good... I watch your channel cause You and I have the same wrist size, and well Seikos... But this video is so hard. It looks and wears fantastic... Buy It Now! Do whatever! Cheers.
Great review & great watch, I just wish more people bought these so there were more on the pre owned market! Not mentioned this before but I like the slight pause you have between some words, not sure if it's deliberate or not, but it adds to the dramatic effect in a video, cheers
Terrific close ups of that watch, the textured fume dial is wonderful. No date is a huge plus as well. I have enough chronographs so surely I do not another one... Seriously this is very tempting to look at in the future and it looks like (yet) another Longines watch has vaulted onto my watch 'watch list'. That Valjoux based movements are terrific work horses but this is modified with a column wheel and a vertical clutch. I wonder if they took the spanners to old cal 3330 (itself a modified Valjoux 7753) that Omega used to fit in the discontinued (non wave dial) Seamaster Professional watch and grafted in the vertical clutch and put back the Swiss lever escapement.
@@EscapementWatch It is actually the other way around. Longines requested an exclusive chronograph movement from ETA back in 2009 of which the ETA A08.L01 was made, named by Longines as the L688. Omega later worked with ETA to develop a chronograph movement with a Co-Axial escapement. Since ETA already made a "new" chronograph movement for Longines, they used this as a base, basically adding the Co-axial escapement and a free sprung balance with a silicone balance spring. Now with the Longines L688.4 also having a silicone balance spring, it's even closer to the Omega 3330. Also a point of misinformation is the addition of a vertical clutch in the Longines L688. It has a Column wheel, but they never added a vertical clutch, in contrary to many articles on the internet... The Omega 3330 also has no vertical clutch as mentioned by Anthony above. Since Omega's movement is based on the Longines, would be weird to have Omega take out the vertical clutch if it would have had one on the L688... You should easily be able to see the horizontal clutch working when starting the chronograph a few times over on the Big Eye. The seconds hand will occasionally "jump" a little bit. I can see it on my Longines Spirit Chronograph as well (Also a L688.4).
looks good. I still like the more traditional black version in steel, which I think looks a little more "badass". If you were lookin for a titanium or a blue dial or both, specifically, this'd be super rad though.
i have to say this l688 movement does not have vertical clutch. it's still a 27 jewel base 7753 no any verify for vertical clutch. they only replace the cam system with colum wheel
why is it so thick? Could they not hire an engineer to make it thinner? Ironic that 40 years ago, automatic chronos were 10mm thick, and today, manufacturers can't reproduce it..

How do u compare this one to the IWC??
Truly a fantastic chronograph! I can totally understand why you want to pull the trigger on one of these.
I've seen this in the metal. While I bought the original black big eye (which is historically correct), this blue dial is exquisitely beautiful.

The blue dial coupled with the tan leather strap is amazing
AGREE!
I'm back to watch my own video. Desire to buy is back!

No I did not unfortunately. Grats on yours and thank you for watching the video!
I have the black dialed steel version.
I wear it more that my other watches
That include Tudor,Rolex and Omega.
It’s that good
Great vid
Wow! That dial is amazing 🤩!!
It's a special beauty for sure!

It really is!
I bought it months ago!
Such beautiful watch! The strap compliments it perfectly. Nuff said. Thanks for sharing! 🤘

You bet!

I believe it does not have SI hair spring. I think that was in version L688.4 and higher.
Can‘t tell for the 2017 model, but Longines Customer Care told me that my steel black dial Avigation BigEye bought a few weeks ago has a silicon hairspring and 54hrs of power reserve.
Nice review of a very good watch.
Thank you kindly
where can I buy this watch at the retail price and possibly a discount ?

Amazing watch!
I love it!

It is definitely deliberate

This one is a keeper if you can hunt it ! I am onto the black dial and looking for a terrific price. Great review as usual. Ty Bro !

highly possible its a 3330 modded for sure. I do know Longines works with ETA closely for the movements that will go in their watches.

Yeah the steel version has a stronger military look which I do favor

Just a clarification - this watch has a lateral (horizontal) clutch, not a vertical one as its built on a L688.4 movement.

Longines needs better WR
Case too thick. Or they should have "layered" it like a Speedy.
it kinda has a layered look. with the stepped flat case edge. then the high polish bezel but its not so dramatic as speedy.
Beautiful watch, that dial is killer! Really on the fence between this and the blue spirit chrono, help!
