Longines Avigation BigEye (Hands-On Review & Unboxing)

- A Discussion and Review of the Longines Avigation BigEye Chronograph. A watch with an unknown origin, presented by a collector and recreated as a reissue in 2017. To this day it still is one of the best value for money Swiss made chronographs, but it offers a lot more than that. GPGH winner, first-class dial design and super proportions of the case. It is a watch that is worth a lot more praise and attention in the community.

Belated Purchase Congratulations with Your Personal Watch Review Launch, IDGuy!
Can you send link to the leather straps you bought for this watch, I just bought this watch and agree with hour video I’m not a fan of the original leather strap
Watching this whilst wearing my BigEye
With your connections in the horological community, it would be wonderful for you to do more hands-on watch reviews. Well done sir! And, I must say this watch scratches numerous itches for me.
Definitely Reed. I'm hoping to get more in by the end of the year (also have a few ideas and retrospectives to throw around) And the BigEye... it's quite amazing what a simple chrono with all the "field" elements can do for us. So, so, so versatile!
While I would happily watch watch reviews by IDGuy I would hope he'd keep his niche of an eye to design rather than watch specs🤞No one else touches that niche.
@@roamready9732 I agree with you that his hands-on reviews should be based on his eye for design and not full on watch specs. I would much rather see IDGuy holding the watch rather than basing the majority of his content on pictures. Ultimately, his niche is well established and should remain so,
Absolutely LOVED THIS REVIEW! I've learned so much about this watch. Thank you so much!
This is hands down the best review of the BigEye. Very well done!
It's always nice when a watch reviewer considers more than just popularity and resale value as you do, very honest opinions and we know you have taken the time to really consider your choices. I bought this as an alternative to an iwc pilot chrono to tide me over but love it so much I'm just going to keep it 😁
Did you ever go an IWC? How has the watch held after a year? Thanks 🙏
Just got mine - bought mostly because of this video. Man you are so right about the proposal being spot on perfect. One of the best-wearing large watches I’ve ever worn. Cheers!
This is a sign. I legit went down to the jeweller yesterday to check this baby out and almost bought it. This is what I'm gifting myself out of my first paycheck 🖤🖤
All things happen for a reason Rohan! Word of warning though: It'll ask you for straps... I've already bought it three...
@@ID-Guy Cheers man! :") Absolutely can't wait to collect straps and this watch!
How's your time with this been? Do you find yourself wearing it everyday?
Another quick question - I have a Seiko Blue Moon and i'm looking to change the stock bracelet for a strap. I have no preferences really, please recommend what style and colours would you go for!
I’ve had my eye (no pun intended) on this watch for years myself and once they released the new model it popped back up on my radar. This review has convinced me that I need to pull the trigger. Excellent and very informative review and a new subscriber.
Maybe it's just me, but I love feeling the rotor spin. Have that feel in a 25 year old Fortis and it makes smile every time.
It's the first watch that I've ever felt going wild on the wrist before haha! But of course you get used to it after a while (this reviews recording was a few months old) And thank you for taking the time to watch the clip, brother
I’ve had mine now for two years and it’s my favorite watch in the rotation. I was looking at getting a Brequet XX and reading reviews when someone mentioned the BigEye. Sold the minute I saw it. Got a great discount and am just not getting tired of the watch.
I got the titanium version a few months ago. It’s a true stunner. Love everything about it. Great review here.
What a well-prepared review. I just discovered your channel and subscribed right away. And now I'm considering this watch to add to my collection. I want to do some more research on the caliber but this review is hands-down one of the best I've seen. Bravo!
What a great review. You really go over and above in you’re approach. If someone is considering this piece I’m certain your experienced critique will be of great value.
Thank you for taking the time to watch it all David! This one was a long time in the making (actually it's been about 5 months since I've had it - the review is a few months late) But it was such fun discussing the piece in depth ;)
This is an awesome review one of the best I’ve ever seen. Great job
It’s been really cool to watch your new watch videos. All your watches feel like very considered purchases with substantive reasoning behind them. Genuinely insightful and, refreshingly, never a “look at what I got guys” style video. Great stuff.
Thank you Sebastian. I've never wanted to follow the crew on this platform flexing with what they've added. And definitely spend waaaay too much time deciding on pieces. By the end of the year I'll do a SOTC and cover what I've gathered over the last few years - making sure to be thorough ;) Thanks so much for taking the time to watch the clip!
@@ID-Guy taking your time to find a great watch is well worth it.
Just got the Titanium yesterday. Absolutely in love! Thanks for the video.
Congratulations on another excellent purchase and one of the best, well researched and thoughtful review
Thank you brother. It was a long time in the making but it's awesome seeing it finished! And thank you especially for taking time out of your day to watch clip
So, it was the 1st time I've *ever* repeatedly checked my YT feed for the release of an upload.
It didn't disappoint & as I watched I couldn't help but think 'ok, so this is gonna to be difficult to find at a decent price for a while...!' Mate, your reviews are so very well considered & your opinion so well respected. (What is they say about the Velvet Underground?; "They didn't sell many records, but everyone who bought one went out and started a band").
Congratulations on this *outstanding* dive into the raison d'etre of a deserving timepiece.
And I'm with you: I can't think of another brand that does heritage 're-issues' better than Longines. It feels like they honour their past whereas many other brands simply re- package it.
It's perfect !!! I know a chap with Patek's and Breguets and he says the Big Eye is the watch in his collection that he would never sell !
Great video...very in depth and informative especially I would assume for those just starting a collection of their own
Congrats on the new timepiece. As always, thought out well!
Congrats on this new addition to the collection @idguy ! I'm not a chrono guy but I'm happy to hear that you love your new piece (and, as usual, produce great content about it). And of course: congrats on this "watchfinder-ish" footage lmao
Should've also added in the video that I've never been a chronograph person either. This one has done a lot to change my mind on them. Haha! And the WatchFinder footage! I'm no photographist ;) Thank you as always E&F. Hope you're both well and enjoying the last bit of our Summer
You are right my fried. Got this one a month ago here on June 2022 and it will be on my collection permanently. What a great piece.
Awesome review. This superb narration sold me on it. So, I bought one! LOVE IT. Thank You.
Another excellent insight. Keep up the great work.
And thank you for taking time out of your day to watch the clip Sam!
Stunning watch, one of my favourites from Longines. I have the spirit which I love, Longines make fantastic watches for the money.
The watch is an absolute stunner. I have one for three years now and I already know it's a watch I'll never sell. It has low water resistance and being a column wheel movement I would very much like if it had an exhibition case. Other than that, the watch is near perfect for me. It is elegant but all-the-same is eye-catching and its retro-modern aesthetics are really cool. It won the prize in the Geneva Watch Convention in 2017 on the revival category against much more expensive watches and when you wear one you can see why. Absolutely recommended.
First of all, big congratulations; it's a beautiful watch. As you say, serious, but with some playfulness. You had me at the beginning, but I was totally on the floor when you brought up the 3 minute intervals of archaic overseas phone calls...only you. I will admit that I've never owned a chronograph, yes, nit even a Speedy, but recently I tried on the green dial IWC as well as the 38mm Zenith with the reverse panda. Both utterly superb, but as you know, a serious investment, so I'm really glad to have watched this for purely selfish reasons. This will be on my radar. Congrats again. It looks like it was designed for your wrist.
I came very close to purchasing one on a cruise ship a couple of years ago - but didn't. I regret that decision. Good vid. Keep at it!
Thorough and well-written video. Not one nonword was used. Recorded well and in proper English, which I hope people appreciate. In a time in which people go on and on, this video is meaningful and gets to the point without wasting time and with its purpose being to maintain interest while educating.
Great episode as always. Thought provoking and analytical as ever. Have been seriously considering one. Love that you mention the eagle beak shaped lugs, stuck out to me too. How apt to this watches design.
Love the "eagle beak" shape (first noticed them on vintage Type XX's) - They just nailed this recreation. If you can find one for a great price (with a discount) grab one, Mark! Bear in mind, it does ask you to buy straps for it hahaha!
Congratulations, great watch! I am happy for you. Longines is so underrated.
Thanks a lot Andreas. In truth, the watch has been with me for about 5 months (the review was delayed) but even now I'm wearing it more and more. SUCH and underrated brand next to its competition, but I think it's starting to pick up (maybe it's just who's seeing more of them) ;)
Great review. Not a piece I was aware of 👍 I can tell you love it. 🥃
Well done video, I love mine plenty with no complaints as it's been with me two years now and is accurate to +2 seconds over a full day on or off the wrist. My example is silent with little to no wobble of the rotor pull. I must add that the reworked Valgranges movement has heat treated blue column wheel, vertical clutch with oscillating pinion mechanism and two automatic reset hammers, all impressive components and mechanism which allows the user to run the Chronograph hand if they choose to without additional concerns or wear and tear.
It’s a beautiful watch. I’ve been looking at several chronographs recently. But this is the first time I’ve seen this one.
Beautiful piece - congrats!
Thanks a mil, Ant! Haven't seen you in ages! I hope you're well and thriving, sir!
It only registered with me near the end of your presentation, but this watch has no date display. And it doesn't need one. Cheers for the review, and enjoy the new addition to your collection.
A surprise, right? The watch actually has a date complication (you can feel / hear the click over) BUT a clean dial makes all the difference ;) Have an excellent start to your weekend Blaine and thank you as always
Great review of a great watch. Longines are so hot at the moment.
Best video on youtube, I just bought a Longines byg eye. Greetings from Zagreb, Croatia!
Great review. My Big Eye arrives Tuesday. I can't wait. I've lusted after this watch since it came out 7 years ago.
You must have longines this 3watch ,heritage diver 1967,big eye and pilot majetek 1935
The Longines Heritage line has some beautiful watches in it. The Heritage Classic with its Sector dial, the Heritage Military, the Tuxedo dial, the list goes on…. The Big Eye is a lovely looking piece and the Blue dialed Titanium version looks really nice. The book that has been included is a great bonus.
It looks like you have found a chronograph that pleases your Design heritage here. A classically inspired watch from the Breguet Type XX school. I can tell that you love it my friend. Congratulations.
Yet another excellent presentation that you have produced here. Keep up the great work. ✊
Thomas, as you aptly note, I consider Longines punching well above its status to counter other brands. All that you have noted are exquisite.
You have such a great taste! Great choice 👍
That's one sharp-looking, tool-tastic watch you got there 👍. I particularly like the packaging; the inclusion of that book is an absolute bonus. In a year's time (or maybe 6 months) I hope you'll get to do an even longer in-depth review of it 😁. Take care of that beauty.
Thank you Fresh Snow. The book is incredibly deep. Not just a picture book (like how I flicked through it) There's SO much history around the exploits and design specs. Amazing that Longines doesn't get more props for adding those small touches. And the BigEye is a gem (the review is about 3 months old now - delayed release) But I've been gravitating to it more and more. Ah, thank you again for taking the time to watch the clip, brother!
Longines are killing it right now
Great review, thank you. I just ordered one.
Great looking with lots of character. I’ve not dared to try on the blue titanium version as I’d buy it and I’m tripping over watch boxes as it is. Longines was my fist nice watch many years (decades) ago and I’d like to get another to celebrate this fact, maybe this is the one. Such a lovely looking piece.
They really have done a excellent job of product and experience. Good choice
Thank you so much Douglas! The watch has been a supreme experience (especially for what they're offered at) And thank you so much for taking time out of your day to watch the clip!
Took delivery last night and threw a "vintage dark brown" leather strap on it. Absolutely the chronograph for me. The case is so nice. The sapphire gives you visual joy from all angles. Legibility? Ha. Next question.... and how did they resist the faux patina? God bless em. This watch is a home run.
If there ever was such thing as video poetry for watches, this is it!... well, nearly all your videos are, too. Cleverly presented with a clear underlying genuine passion for the subject at hand, you encourage me to do better work in my videos.. will always pale by far in comparison, though. You're just too dn eloquent!
- Back to the watch -
This was always a favorite chronograph. The design just works on so many levels. Considered before. Idk, maybe some day I will get one. Kind of happy with a recent mechanical chronograph which I hope to show on wrist watch week some time.
That's a damn fine piece, looks purposeful.. Fairly recently sold off my chrono's as I realised I don't use the timing function at all and was shocked when I saw the service cost of a VJ7750!! Notice you favour monochromatic watches, me too.. Had my heart set on a Railmaster, but now thinking a seamaster 300 master 😉
Cool watch (wouldn't expect anything less from you) Congrats 👍🏻👍🏻
I'm happy because you are happy !
Enjoy your watch ⌚
Looks fantastic on that sail cloth strap
Worth the wait. Great review
Thank you Walter! This one has actually been on the cutting room floor for like 5 months but it's so great seeing the video finally completed. And thank you especially for taking time out of your day to watch the clip!
Love this piece congratulations my friend ❤👊
Best „review“ ever ❤️
Too kind, sir. It was delayed a few times but it's great seeing it all finally together ;) Thank you for spending your time watching the clip!
How does it feel to always be the smartest guy in the room fella!? God like amongst youtubers, probably your best work. I just picked up the Sector Dial for £950, just like yourself it was too good not too, and it's a keeper till rigor mortis snaps my wrist off
Haha! Too kind David. I was way too methodical with this one ;) BUT Longines deserved a thorough talk. It's crazy how they still are underrated in our community but make for such excellent bang per buck examples. Wear your sector in good health! And thank you for taking the time to watch the lengthy clip
Al l be
Nice first! That's a real value. Surely this will be very sought after. It's a keeper.
Wonderful passionate review - Bravo IDGuy 👏. It really is a gorgeous watch. I love how Longines have invested in the overall packaging (box and book). Rolex has so much to learn about the entire ownership experience.
Thank you as always Mark! It's definitely opened my eyes a lot more to what's out there and the "value" we get from some of these brands. I'd say the same about VC and how they package their products. The book is ridiculously good too... not just a photo album, but paragraphs and paragraphs of tech specs and exploits around watch origins and all the pioneers journeys. Many brands out there are all about the "look at me" factor ;)
So well said Mark!
I like the winding on this watch, it feels solid. The lack of a date window and the less than 42mm diameter is what sold me.
Does feel great, right? The whole watch feels like it could take a good few hits and keep on running. I wasn't mad saying that the proportions feel spot-on? Ah, the BigEye is a goodie. Keep enjoying yours Rob!
@@ID-GuyThe Baselworld award influenced me as well, because I'm superficial and status conscious.
Incredible watch. Congratulations 👏
a hard covered book with the presentation....never saw that before... nice touch....nice review
Breathtaking watch ⌚ 😍
Great review. I love mine. Such a charismatic watch. Lume is ok on hands, weak on numerals. But that’s because they’re not applied, so lack depth. But applied would look wrong. Movement is a 7750 base with column wheel modification. All 7750s ‘whirr’ with rotor spin. Wear it well - some great strap choices. Can’t go wrong with contrast stitch, thick cognac or chestnut.
Great review!!! Want one now.
Good looking piece. Congratulations.
Thanks a lot Scott! Funny, this review has been delayed by like 3 months (so I've had it for about 5 months now) still loving it though. Such an easy pick up and go piece
Great review. Thanks!
Lovely video. Seems like tremendous value for money.
Fantastic video as always! At 16:00 I am afraid you missed one of the most under rated pilot watches of all :) - the Junghans Meister Pilot Chronoscope. Big baby for sure, but beautiful and amazing value for money.
That watch is a STUNNER!
Longines have so many excellent watches these days, so well priced too
This is one of the very few times where you really like a watch and cant find no fault. And I agree.
Cracking watch. Congrats!!
Perfect review just perfect. Want to buy it right away …. Just now the blue of black.
Belated Purchase Congratulations with Your Personal Watch Review Launch, IDGuy!
Ah, thank you Thomason. Loved sharing your Milgauss as Saturday's cover. Such a cool photo and worth a lot of praise for its simplicity!
Likewise with your impressive 4 hours marathon live stream, @@ID-Guy which was incredibly admirable!
Thanks for your praise on my Milgauss photo for I didn't expect to be selected for Saturday's cover.
I took some inspiration cues from Rolex's simplistic watch advertisement videos.
I appreciate simplicity at its best like Gino Al-Campo would often said to Gordon Ramsay's face, "Minimum Effort with Maximum Satisfaction!", Hahaha.
Congrats brother it's a stunning watch and longines doesnt disappoint 🤙⌚👌😊😁
Really cool watch (in my opinion), and its history too!
@IDGuy - Who was first? Claudio? Or...
I think the personal videos where you really delve in to the watch, like this one, are my favourite videos from you! Not sure if it's really in line with the nature of the channel but I would love to see a SOTC kind of video and/or post some day! - Han
A SOTC needs to happen by the end of the year! I'd love to share the few pieces I have (with hopefully a few more along the way) It's by no means mind-blowing but it'll be thorough ;) Thank you for this Han and for taking the time to watch the clip!
Totally agree with you.
@@ID-Guy Of course Mr. IDGuy! Will be keeping an (big) eye out for it :)
Congrats. We have engaged a few times on Longines from the Master retrograde to the sector dial. I think they are under rated. I am not a big chronograph guy. But, I do have on my list the The Longines Avigation Watch Type A-7 1935 that is tilted and has a single pusher. White dial, orange hands and numbers. Good to know about the rotor.
Thanks for the wonderful review. Love it. I likewise noticed the D. clasp. Hope you wouldn't mind sharing where I could procure one. Thank.
Wow, i over looked this in the past as didn’t really appreciate Longines heritage for this model. Now being more in tune with what I actually enjoy wearing, you’ve totally sold it me. I’ve just got to have one, love the tool tactic vintage vibe for a great all around balanced piece. One thing I’m curious to know, what is your opinion with how often to get the movement serviced for average rotation use. Many thanks, please continue with the great work and shear passion for watch keeping! 👍
I got my Bigeye from Jomashop a couple of months back too. 2850 Aussie, while retail here they’re 4K.
I think I got a bargain, definitely a keeper. Thanks for sharing & avagoodwk’end.
Great that we both eventually joined the brotherhood, Patrick ;) And thank you for taking the time to watch the clip, mate!
Congratulations 🍾 IDGuy! $1800usd at Jomashop. Great watch 😎.
Great review
I have a pre owned Big Eye, which came in near perfect condition, just slight wear the strap, I mean slight, cost me more or less what a new Seiko Capt. Willard. Watch fits perfect, warranty card when I bought it was a little over 2 years ago and sold by a store in Wales, UK and I'm in the US bought . Love how they didn't muck it up with a date. fit's me perfect. For the money , hard to beat, Mine is a plain ole big eye, nice they added colors and metals, seems Longines is making a comback, recently bought a Spirit, another aviation inspired watch, offered in several colors and two sizes. I bought new, somehow snagged a discount code which saved me close but not as good as an AD discount came like the next day, with extra whatch strap pouches, backpack and a free service.. I bought in blue, but may have opted for a different colorway then blue, but it's ok.
Estetically beautiful
Love that word, Fugitive. Thank you for taking to time to watch the clip, brother!
Outstanding review of an amazing watch
Love the Big Eye. My daily beater is an Omega Seamaster 300m 9900 Chronograph. I think this would complement that beautifully.
YES! Omega Diver Chrono's! Another supremely underrated watch. Huge fan. I'd happily add one to my collection (if I could pull it off) Honestly think you'd dig the BigEye as a partner to this. It has the heft and such a great balance overall, like your Seamaster. Thank you for taking the time to watch the lengthy clip, brother
@@ID-Guy yes. It’s certainly on my short short list of my next purchase. The SMP 300 chrono is a beast. The 9900 movement is truly amazing. Incredible price of horology. In the four months I’ve owned it, it’s only lost 12 seconds. True masterpiece of watch making.
@@ID-Guy update. Bought the Bigeye. Same model as the video. Can’t wait to get in on my wrist. Thanks for the vlog inspiration!
I had one and i sold it. For a while now i want one again...
Oh no... I don't want to be the reason for you wanting to go after it again haha! BUT returning to a watch does mean that there's something more about it that you miss. Maybe try out the new blue dial model when the prices drop? ;)
@@ID-Guy Well as i mentioned, was thinking to get it again for a while now, so you're not to blame :) But, you're "twisting the knife"... :) Actually i like more the black one than the blue one. Btw. did you realised the ghost date? On mine was at around 5 o'clock.
@@ID-Guy so I ordered it again, Monday/Tuesday will be in my hands. :)
Great watch, great review.
Crazy how a watch can change your perceptions of "chronographs" so easily. Ah, thank you for the comment and taking the time to watch the clip, Doc!
Ive been looking at this since the release as Longines has always provided a lot for a very reasonable price. But i was hesitant about the case dimensions initially. Sadly, after full analysis of your description..i’m probably gonna have to get out the wallet.
P.s. dear longines..your watch isn’t THAT good, so no additional price increases will be necessary.
Great review
The only "deal breaker" is the case thickness, but it's so manageable (it hasn't bothered me at all) There hasn't been a time when I've thought "if only it was thinner" - maybe it feels correct for this style of watch? This coming from someone who's handled a couple 10mm Lange Dato's hahaha! Must say, it's so versatile as a daily... I'm finding myself (even after owning it for 5 months - yes, this review is very dated) that I'm grabbing it more and more. Try your best to find this model with a good discount on top of it. Think I managed to find mine for 25% off. And thank you Cary! Really enjoyed throwing this review together
What an awesome interview probably the best I’ve ever seen on the Big Eye. Question where did you source that awesome rally deployment strap from.? Thank you
Looks good. Enjoy! I’m hoping to own the Hanhart 417 ES.
Another brilliant piece if you can get your hands on one Robert and thank you!
Strongly considered this for my first Chrono as well . Ultimately I’m leaning towards something a little more sporty with more wr. That said I think this is possibly the best value Chrono going fantastic piece and it looks cracking on that strap . Longines is so underrated.
Must say, I've had it for about 5 months (the review has been delayed) and it's still one of the pieces I grab and can easily wear for a week without much thought. Should also preface that I've never been a fan of chronographs haha! (Left out an entire segment where I've tried all the speedmasters and never connected with them) Keep hunting, man. That's the joy of the hobby! If ever you reflect back on this model though, the BigEye gets my full recommendation ;)
@@ID-Guy well said I’ve never been a chronograph guy either ! Hence still not owning one . I like this one though it got me close . I like the speedmaster mark 2 , heuer 1964 anniversary, among others. My appreciation for Chrono as is growing .
I have the Longines Heritage Diver Chrono Automatic. Has a splash of red and I love it so much. I have a small to medium wrist and fits great.
l have looked at this watch, from it's outset, but thought it was,at 41 to big, good unboxing.
A superb watch! My internal fight is between this and the Damasko DC56...
Love that sailcloth strap with the deployant... where did you get it?
Very nice review. I couldn't help but notice both the Omega and Smiths together with the Longines are all models from the past. Would you say the best designs are behind us or are there contemporary designs that interest you?
A smart choice. Great looking and terrific bang for the buck. A weak point? The unnecessarily big box 😜
I also have this watch and constantly amazed how wonderful It is. I have always wondered why the minute indicator is sectored by 3 minutes and not 5 as the most. I have not seen anyone till now to answers that. Thanks for that
Lovely, I want one! Might have to wait since I just added a moonwatch. One question: who makes that lovely deployant clasp you feature on this video? I really enjoy your videos, please keep up the good work!
