Even three years after its presentation this is still a stunner! Just the perfect balance between classic/by-the-numbers and unique/quirky.
This watch is threatening my wallet... Dang, it's so good looking...
Excellent review, Thanks! This is definitely one of the most handsome watches to come out in 2017.. if not in the past few years. An instant new classic.
Classic in the making and a smash hit for Longines.
AjaxForever 💯
Such a beautiful looking piece. Imagine if they offered it in a manual hand wind version with a greatly reduced height! A hand cranker would suit this design so much
I’ve been looking for an affordable classic looking chronograph. Just found it!

I am a Professional Pilot and own it.
For this type of watch, definitely Longines BigEye.
Took me a year of research before choosing it over others.
- For a "Classic Chrono. Pilot watch" , Longines BigEye is THE watch, Breitling were not doing watches in the early days of Aviation, Longines YES. So i buy legitimacy for a Classic.
- the aesthetic to me, looks much better, much more sporty/elegant
- the Lum is amazing, visible during the day, the green is very refreshing.
Not a dial pretending to be aged over the time like the Breitling.
- the engrave of the plane at the back is so classy
- thickness is perfect for a Chrono, not too thick
- the in house movement is top of the top
- pushers are thicker/robust (same as before pilot watches with their gloves)
This watch will gain lots of attention, very difficult to re-produce it at the this level of right balance,
and impossible to buy the early days watch maker for a Classic like other brands are doing.
Again, Legitimacy pays off.
I'm happy to discover this. The IWC Spitfire is on my radar but this really offers a lot more for your dollar. I'd miss the day date but you're right, it would crowd this interesting handsome dial. Also, the lum not being faux retina is refreshing. I may have my chronograph picked for less than half what I'd planned on spending with almost no compromise.
Kinda cool that Geddy Lee of Rush has one of these. Learned that from reading W&W. 👍
Always helpful to list the thickness of a chronograph. Nice video!
Thanks!
This movement is beautiful, it will be nice if they could make another version with clear back
Yes. That decorated column wheel movement is beautiful. My next watch.
This
I grabbed it because of this fabulous video.Mine will arrive tomorrow.
They whacked this out of the park. And 20mm lug width too! I like when companies make room for the rotor with the case back, not the case. Looks proportional from the sides. Great thoughtful design!
Great review as always! Beautiful watch!
Thank you!!!
wow im really tempted as i like dress or chronos. Should have a display back as ive seen the movement why highly decorate movement with a closed back?
A handsome watch and the review was very well presented.
Great video. Many thanks!
If this had a clear caseback it would be a instant buy for me
Those macro shots are so good!
Thanks!
After watching this review I have hit the subscribe. This guy is top. very pleasing voice. keep the amazing work.
Beautiful watch
very nice watch, perfect size at 41mm case & 20mm lug..
Case looks really close to the IWC pilot chrono which uses a base ETA with a fancy rotor! This is a better deal and the Colomnn wheel is a game changer
no current IWC is using ETA....the old one's maybe - but back then ETA also didn't belong to SWATCH.
@@andresrogenmoser5778 ETA was indeed part of Swatch when IWC was still using ETA movements.
Did the straps have some play? Like you can wiggle left and right...
Beautiful watch.
3 atm can use for rain and shower ?
Did you mention the accuracy of the movement?
I'm torn between the Bigeye and the Hanhart Pioneer Twincontrol. Any recommendations?
Excellent review much better than mine lol. Still in love with mine.
Thanks Andy. You did a good job!
I appreciate arm shot and discussion of fit and wrist size. I just bought one after seeing this review.
are you happy with it? I'm still debating between this Longines and Iwc 39mm
Came extremely close to buying an Avigation BigEye on vacation in September...I passed then because I didn't know enough about it and its beauty really caught me off guard. I have a Longines Heritage Conquest as well and it's been rock solid. Thinking that this Avigation will round out my Heritage Conquest and Tudor BB36 well. It wears remarkably well for its size; I was concerned about it's thickness due to the Valjoux 7750 based movement. My wrist is only about 6.4" around and it fits really well - I think it's largely based to the soft leather strap. Unlike other leather straps, which can be hard, this one is very soft and molds to your wrist really well.
The only thing about the Avigation I would change is making the minute counter the same diameter as the other registers for better symmetry. I know, I know, that's the purpose of the "BigEye". Even with that, it's a stunner!
It can use for shower and rain ?
Beautiful Watch. You should feature your website name in your videos. The website design is superb.
I need to add this watch to my collection ... soon. God, they nailed it.
Mike C I was finally able to purchase one last June and love it! You won’t regret it!
xekret - congrats man, wear it in good health. I was wondering is the brown strap standard? I saw one with a mesh steel bracelet as well. This would be the perfect everyday watch! Love it!
really is one of the best looking watches ever, let alone in 2017. I just wished for 2k it had an exhibition case back.
At 2k you won't really expect any finishing on the movement, they probably thought it was best to keep it hidden.
"Ya-know" is your filler phrase. Damn fine watch though, good review.
yes I dig it!
What is the green background thing called? :)
SemperTempusFugit cutting mat
Amazing watch Longines is way ahead with value for money and quality.
What's the strap width at the buckle?
Thank you
Thinking about a deployant? 😁 I just checked on mine with callipers and it’s 18mm.
Shame not handwinding like the speedy pro: slimmer! Perhaps also combined with a display caseback. Lovely watch tho!
I had a 1940s Heuer Big Eye - very very similar to this
This is one of the finest luxury watches I have ever seen. Pure elegance and refinement, at an exceptionally reasonable (though far from cheap!) price. Longines is one of the best brands in watchmaking, can't stand the pretentiousness of Rolex and their designs are nothing special at all.
This vs Sinn 103 sa chrono? Who wins?
Longines
BUT with 3ATM is it SAFE to wash it once awhile? Or worry water might get into it
Zach- you mention the watch is $2065 but later say $2625 (which is the correct price). I went into my ad expecting it to be significantly cheaper as I’m I’m Canada.
Apologies and thanks for catching that. Sometimes we misspeak. The correct price is always listed in the spec sheet at the beginning of the video.
wornandwound all good guys!
이쁘다
It would be nice if watch companies would offer larger case sizes of their heritage watches for the modern market, as well as smaller sized cases for those who want a more authentic experience.
Hamilton did for their Intramatic 68 and it didn't go over well. I think smaller sizing for heritage pieces is a better option because most who like heritage like smaller sizes except for a small few.
I bought it. For some reason it doesn’t look that large on reviewers wrists online, but it felt huge on my 7 inch wrist. Quite disappointed as I fell in love with the watch before purchasing.
wow looks too good to be true
This or the Sinn 356 🤔 or both .... I already have a Speedy btw
i would choose Longines over Sinn. i also have Speedies... but I do not think they will collide in the collection
Just bought this in a sale £1565 in the sale
👏👏👏
Throw a unidirectional bezel on there and you will have a breguet type 20
keltecdan thats the first thing i thought it has a breguet look to it
Yeah right , the case shape also does look as if it had a rotating bezel to it had it removed somehow, maybe that checks with the story of the watch being an unknown vintage piece brought to longines
Dia 40mm and lug2lug 47.5 will be ideal size
Would it be asking too much for you to explain EXACTLY what the subdials at 6 and 9 actually do? I mean just for those of us who don't eat, sleep and drink horology 24/7. Thanks.
Dan Friedman I think it's clear they are the chronograph counters for minutes and hour.
Nice watch but 3 atm? For real longines?
Should've had a display caseback to show off the column wheel chrono movement. Also a 6-o'clock date window would have been nice to add to the everyday functionality...
Jarl Ballin' agree with you regarding the caseback but date would be too fussy
Affordable Breguet Type XX
Is this not just a trend-following watch tying to capitalize on the popularity of the IWC Pilot? Great technical achievement for the price though.
Which trend would that be?
Ankur Ji, it's a remake of it's own watch of the 30s or 40s. Longines doesn't need to copy anyone when they themselves have such a rich history in watchmaking. You need to do your research before making such comments.
No trend here, I have a few tool pilot/Aviation watches that I love. This in based on Longines own original design from years gone by and it's a winner literally, it won first prize at a major watch event and with watch lovers alike. This Big Eye reminds me of a German Flieger watch from the early 40s or so. IWC are a more modern technical pilots watch with a different aesthetic.
I thought longines was pronounced as lawn-gee
Maybe in French...
Aman Bordia In French it would be pretty close to ’lawnzin’. Definitely ’n’ is pronounced in the end.
Longines is one of the brand making very beautiful dial but their main problem is using eta machines !
Tinh Nguyen What’s the problem in that?
Yo Bro....many manufacturers use ETA as well? Rest assured, it's a great calibre
I like this watch. I do understand its based upon a past pilot's watch where one needs to easily operate it with gloves. However, as a modern watch, its Big Pushers ruin the aesthetic.
It's a bank for buck, as a replacement of Speedmaster Professional at much a lucrative look. You should include the accuracy issue. Many RUclipsrs these days mentioning this.
Just bought one of these - it's running at about +7 seconds a day which is acceptable but not great. May improve after running in. My only slight gripe is the lume isn't great - it fades very quickly on the numerals, but the hands are a little better.
Certainly a handsome watch, but for me lacks a certain subtlety next to the similarly priced IWC Pilot Watch.
Paul Lewis tell me which IWC chronograph costs $2600 retail.
Paul Lewis please tell me as well which IWC price close to this one.
Paul Lewis similarly priced iwc! which iwc is this oh i know those iwcs made in the swiss valleys near beijing
Totally out of balance for me..
Too big
Wristky detail indeed 🤡
Too much of a homage to the Type XX
Just another eta-based chronograph. Great review though. It's not your fault that Longines is a shitter brand.
Swiss Watch Craze the column wheel movement in this can be seen in watches at twice the price iwc use eta movements dont you know
Swiss Watch Craze: Says the lemming.
