      Big Eye takes the gold imo between these two. It's a shame that there is no open case back to see the movement and also it never came on the mesh bracelet that they use for the Legend Diver. :(

    When I review the new Hamilton chrono pioneer, I will SUPER MACRO the minute subdial and you will see the minute hand JUMP instead of glide over to the next minute! That is horizontal clutch in action. These VALJOUX based 7750 and 7753 have been modified for Longines with vertical clutch and column wheels. Instead of horizontal and cam pushers. They keep updating these and making them specialized for longines and Omega calibre 3330. This sweep minute hand change isn't always an indication of a vertical clutch but it usually a huge tell! So I could be wrong but just giving you guys all the info! Seems like everyone publication is split on this issue and only LONGINES can confirm.

    • @EscapementWatch
      @EscapementWatch  Год назад +2

      The big eye has a vertical clutch modified in there and a tell is that the minute hand smoothly sweeps to the next minute. That usually means vertical. That is the L688 movement but I believe L688.2. This one is L688.4 maybe they went back to horizontal. These modified Valjoux's 7750 and 7753 are confusing and they keep updating them! I think I was right it is vertical modified valjoux. When I review the new Hamilton chrono pioneer you will see the minute hand JUMP instead of glide in a macro I will make and that is horizontal clutch! Seems like all online publications are SPLIT on this issue and only LONGINES can confirm. I'm going to stick with vertical clutch because of how the minute subdial moves until Longines says otherwise.

    Chronographs used to be pretty thin in the 60s and 70's. What happened even though alot of those great Chronographs were manual wind from the 60s but dam today they are so thick. I do like Longines left the date 📅 out without trying to squeeze it in somewhere.

    Longines is using the caliber L688.4 in the Spirit chronograph, which is based on the ETA A08.L01. This is an automatic movement, complete with column wheel and vertical clutch operation for the chronograph. It was developed for Longines, but is also used by Omega (who proceeds to fit the movement with a co-axial escapement).

    I had a Longines spirit in my mind as a dream watch and I was saving to buy it. Now thanks to your video I discovered that the AR coating on the outer part can leave marks of scratches. I don't understand why put coating on the outside part of the crystal that just defeats the whole point of the sapphire.

    • @marker20

    Very nice. I 'd say you'd be better off going for this if you needed the watch for sports - waterproof etc, the BigEye, more everyday/smart. Not so many fully waterproof, lumed, ti, vintage styled chrono out there! I really like how vintage the watch looks and the green lume takes me back to the early days of lume, which was rarely white. I've owned the BigEye and it was great, but I'd certainly consider this... if it was a bit smaller - those long Longines lugs! But, this is virtually IWC quality and for me, better looking.

    Has anybody put the titanium bracelet from the no date spirit on this?

  • @anthonystevens8683
    @anthonystevens8683 Год назад +1

    I'm probably a minority here but I prefer the BigEye but in steel. With the black dial it's for me anyway one of the most easily readable at a glance chronographs that I've seen but granted 'might' not look as classy as the petrol blue fume dial of the titanium version. Yes it's heavy compared to the titanium and arguably harder to find (well it was when I was hunting one down anyway a long while back) but that is my preference. I'll not go into the lateral v vertical clutch argument as I've yet to find a definitive answer. I might be wrong but a further modified version of this Valjoux 7753 base movement was used by Omega in the 3330 calibre changing the escapement to coaxial. Anyway I really like the Spirit collection a lot, for a COSC certified movement at a decent price by a manufacturer with heritage. Great review FT!

    • @EscapementWatch
      @EscapementWatch  Год назад +2

      Yes the black bigeye is so good. A titanium black dial version would be cool to see! But as for the movement I will stick with vertical clutch because of the way the minute hand changes smoothly instead of ticking over which usually indicates vertical vs horizontal. I will be reviewing a hammy chrono soon with horizontal and I will macro the minute change super super macro to see the minute snap over. This is not concrete but until Longines officially states otherwise.

    Great review. I also prefer the Big Eye though this is pretty compelling if the style appeals more to a prospective buyer. Pretty fair critique. Refreshing to hear reasonable reviews unlike the popular trend to simply find reasons to justify not buy a watch. E.g. expecting a 34mm diameter, chronograph, 6mm thick, in house 5hz 0s/day accuracy movement, self-adjust bracelet, all for $500.🤣

    Oris and Seiko color way is not even similar. Theres is like a “Tiffany blue” and Longines is like neon green. And I mean $3900 is “a little high” for Longines maybe 3 years ago but most of their new watches today all start at around $3k. From the Ultra-Chron, to the Zulu time to the record chronograph and now the Pioneer. I’ve never heard one person complain about “AR coating” on the top. Pretty much every Breitling has “AR coating” on the top and bottom. I have 4 Breitling’s not one has scratched on the top coating of the sapphire.

    • @EscapementWatch
      @EscapementWatch  Год назад +1

      You can search "top ar coating scratched" on omega forums or general watch forums and you will see complaints. AR coating is as strong as a basic mineral crystal in scratch resistance. So worse then Hardlex Seiko's proprietary hardened mineral.
      And I know seikos and oris's look much different but its the same idea or concept of always 'ON'! FLAME ON!
