IZ was a national treasure to his people. And for a good reason, he was such a delight and had the voice of an angel and he did so much for the Hawaiian people, their rights, and independence. When he died the Hawaiian flag at the state capitol building was flown at half-mast, he's one of only 3 people at the time to be honored like that in Hawaii, and the only one of those 3 that wasn't a member of government. I think some commenters said it already but around 10k people attended his funeral to celebrate his life!

There is a short documentary about IZ and this song, he was a big positive vibe for the Islands of Hawaii. Feel it in the throat every time I hear this song :)
The voice of an angel. A gentle giant. One cannot see him without processing his size, but all of us wrestle with our hidden demons in our own way. If he used food to cope, well, so be it. His voice is a voice of peace, a voice that brought joy to everyone he knew, and a voice that the world badly needs more of. Most of us will never touch so many in our lives. RIP Iz.
i don’t believe he passed because of his size (correct me if i’m wrong) but i 100% agree. he’d be a huge part of our salvation if he lived today. rest in paradise iz
My mom passed away a few days ago from cancer. My dad played this version in her ear buds for her as she passed. She loved this song and loved this version.
Fun fact, he called the studio at 3am and because he was so nice they opened for him (within like 15 minutes of his call) to come in and record. He did this song in one take. His ashes were spread at Mākua Beach on July 12, 1997 Mahalo from Hawai'i.
Brad, you may be the first person I've ever heard say he's never seen The Wizard of Oz. I don't know how much you'd enjoy it now, but as a kid you would've loved it, like every other kid I've ever known.
He was one of the most beloved island musicians Hawaii has had. His life and career were cut all too short due to his illness, but his music will live on forever. He has had many great song throughout his career, but I think that Lex would absolutely love hearing "Hawaiian Sup'pa Man" off his Facing Forward album.
I guess the other most beloved Hawaiian musician was Don Ho, singing 'Tiny Bubbles' - my father loved that song way back when and now I do too! ruclips.net/video/mlCiDEXuxxA/видео.html
@@hmichaelr1 That's very true. Don Ho is an icon, though he is one of many iconic singers and groups from Hawaii, among those icon you could include Moe Keale, The Brothers Cazimero, Cecilio & Kapono, Ledward Kaapana, Kealiʻi Reichel, Kalapana, Ohta-san, Sam Ku West, Na Leo Pilimehana,, Mākaha Sons of Niʻihau (of which IZ was a founding member) and so many others. How crazy you guys just did this reaction. I live where Bruddha IZ was born and raised, but am getting to leave and was binging documentaries of him. Been 25 years. Number 1 selling Hawai'ian musician of all time. He is royalty here. Thank you guys. This was awesome.
I feel bad for the younger folks. We watched THE WIZARD OF OZ every year when it came on regular TV. Like we did it as a nation. Cable ruined everything.
It was the Middle of the Night and they were closing the Studio for the night when Israel Came in and asked if he could use it. This Song was Done in One Take, With just Israel and His Ukulele... and Nothing Else... No Editing or Auto Tune... He was a True Miracle!
Braddah IZ is a Hawaiian treasure. He was famous on his own, and earlier, as a member of the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau, a group that was hugely popular. On his passing, his body lay in state at the State Capitol in Honolulu. The lines of people to see him off were huge, over 10,000 (?). Thanks to the internet, I found him and his music in 2000. Then blubbered like a baby when I learned he had passed three years prior.
Wizard of Oz was such a classic film. When you look at the quality of the film's production, acting, and script, its hard to imagine it came out in 1939. The first portion of the film is in B&W. Was surprised at first that Brad did not know it was from Wizard of OZ but realize what was must-see classics to my generation (I'm 56) is not necessarily the same classics for younger generations.
This version is my all time favorite song. I've always struggled with faith and this song makes me feel at peace and that it will carry me to that place I've always been searching for.
Met this guy one time when I was a little kid - early 90s or so. Me and my friend were walking in our neighborhood, Keaukaha, and a van drives by with IZ out the passenger window yelling "Haaaawaiian" at us. Lol. The van pulled into a house just ahead, so we went over and he gave us some stickers. Tales from hawaiian home lands lol.
IZ melded Somewhere over the Rainbow, and What a Wonderful World. He was also a Hawaiian treasure, think Elvis, and the Beatles rolled into one man. His funeral which was in the video was attended by 10,000 people. Also the instrument he is playing is called a ukulele (yoo-kuh-lay-lee).
That would be pronounced ‘ooo-koo-leh leh’ The Hawaiian pronunciation of vowels doesn’t match mainland USA. Lived there for 9 years, and if someone pronounced ukulele wrong you could see locals bristle.
It’s so frustrating listening to Brad. He’s never heard or seen or experienced anything. And he never knows what the instruments are or what the genres are. 🤦🏻♂️
love the video for this one, but musically i prefer the version that has both 'somewhere over the rainbow' leading into the Louis Armstrong cover of 'What a wonderful world' just keeps that positivity going longer. and they just fit together so well.

Yeah - I've always hated hearing uke's played like guitars, instead of the way old timers like GEORGE FORMBY used to play - That's when ukelele's come alive. But that takes skill. I make an exception in this guy's case because my best friend played this song to her unborn child all through her pregnancy (how - i don't know!) and Millie came out the most beautiful little girl imaginable. We had to listen to it 5 times a day during the first year or so of her life outside the womb - so I grew to like it I guess! I think I prefer other versions to be truthful - but I've only just realized this guy died - I should have known - (how - I don't know!) - Sad to hear that though.
I pray he is up there in his greatest dream ever. This version of this song is fantastic. So gentle and soothing. The only other artist, and I'm not too sure if you have covered her version of Somewhere over the Rainbow already, is Eva Cassidy.
