Just picked this board up a couple weeks ago for a build I'm starting this weekend. Thanks for the great video, concise and well thought out, like always.
Have fun!
Thanks Mike, I was worried when I saw the power cycle, I thought it would brick the motherboard. Good to know that's normal. Nice details that you included in the video that others did not. 👍
Glad to help
Was looking into the MSI boards to figure out what needs to exactly be done to flash these boards to be able to use the 5800X CPU. This totally just cleared up the steps I was wondering about before when I went somewhere to look at CPUs. I was told I shouldn't bother trying to do the flash myself on these boards because it can get "complicated" and I should just give them $40 to flash the board for me. Obviously it's so simple like it has always been in the past with all other boards! Crazy how people try to make you panic purchase their overpriced services...
thanks for the comment and i agree this isn't rocket science
just bought this MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk + Ryzem 5 5600, was sweating cold bullets when it did not post, came across this video, when I searched for "new mobo b550+ ryzem 5 5600 dram led light on" tremendous help, amazingly calm going into my first bios flash. so happy so say we have ignition. thank you for this, and thank God for people like you who take time off of their day to guide newbies like me.
awesome glad to hear it all went well
I’m in the same exact situation did you ever get it to post? Mind helping me out?
@@averagegamer1043 yeah, just followed the instructions, 1st attempt then windows booted.
UK Devon here bud. Just bought a B550 gaming plus with a x5800 and 3080ti going in. You've helped. A lot buddy thank you! Gonna have a beer and put it together lol. :)
Lovely 😊 enjoy your evening
You sir have just saved my life. Had a bad bios install and could not get the flash to work. Sadly it was because I was naming the whole folder instead of just the bios. Thank you so much. I legit thought I was going to have to order a new MB.
Glad it helped :-)
Thank you! I didn't see any other tutorials mentioning the other lights would turn on after the USB was done flashing. I let it sit for 20 minutes before I started panicking.
GUYS!!! If the light starts flashing and it randomly stops, take out the ram and then do the process again (turn off the power supply and then turn it back on and press the bios flash back button again)
good tip
It just keeps doing this over and over
Thanks Mike for reminding me I needed to check for a new BIOS for my MOBO. Sure enough, there was one. Took all of 5 mins to update; prefect morning-sunny, calm and no utility or street construction going on. Now my MOBO is ready for a 30 Series card should I ever get my hands on one (brahhaawwahaaawww).
Nice work! And good luck with getting one of those!
Appreciate the wish of good luck Mike. BTW, prices continue to rise on Ebay over here across the pond.
Much appreciated - took me a while to figure out why the build isn't booting
No problem, glad it helped :-)
I just completed this procedure, and one thing that is CRITICAL is what he mentions at 6:20 , that is what to wait for to know for sure that the process is complete. On my previous MB, I didn't wait long enough, the board wouldn't boot, so I returned it. This time, I paid better attention to this video, waited until the board power cycled, and the board now boots up properly. Thanks for this video!
One question: why isn't MSI shipping these boards with a recent bios? The AMD Ryzen 7 5700G (what I've got) has been available for more than half a year, but still MSI uses an old bios. Weird.
I just bought the board around last week and am just flashing it now to work with my 5900x. Good to note from him I should take my SSD’s out as one has windows on it lmao
I just bought this motherboard and a ryzen 7 5800 and, in my ignorance, realized I had to do this. Thank you! very helpful!
Glad I could help!
Did yours say it was ryzen 5000 series ready?
@@JoeMama-ly1kc No it didn't

@Mike To let you know, I think your steps here worked. I was able to get into the bios on the test bed. Hopefully it will work in its system. Fingers Crossed. Thank's man. If you were USA based, I'd buy you a beer.
Thanks 🙏 glad it works for you post a picture of the working system in the discord if you want to show it off
@@mikesunboxing I'd love too.
THANK YOU!! I tried to update the BIOS through MSI Center and it bricked. I followed your instructions and I managed to update it and IT WORKS NOW!! You saved me.
Glad it helped. handy to have flashback on a board these days
Thanks for the great tutorial, Mike! You are developing quite the library!
Yep that is the plan 😃
Thanks this video was so helpful, I didn't know what to do when nothing was posted and the flashback wasn't working. I just had to rename the file that was all. Thanks again!

A mate of mine just said that he didnt understand cloning. I said "That makes two of us".
I'll get me coat............
LOL !!
Thanks mate, you solved two issues for me, turns out the bios flash can't see a 64gb thumb drive. Swapped out to a 16gb and it worked.
glad to hear it
This is the best video on this topic. Thanks for explaining how I will know the reboot has appeared and that it's safe to just turn off the power. Appreciate it. Hopefully it will work as smoothly on my board
Glad it was helpful!
MY SOLUTION!
I fought with this for over 2 hours following everything step along the way. It would only blink for 5 to 10 seconds then go solid red. I formated my USB drive all the diffrent formats it would allow to try and get it to work after it not working following the video. I was using a "SamData" brand USB drive. This is a cheap USB from Amazon. It did not work with this 32 GB USB drive. I then used my 128 GB name brand "SanDisk". Although 128 GB usb can not be formated into FAT32 it still worked and was formated as "NTFS" when it worked. So use a name brand USB flash drive.
If someone have issue with usb flesh try this: (all commands in windows console)
diskpart
list disk
select disk (id)
clean
convert mbr
create partition primary
select part 1
active
format fs=fat32 label=(YOUR_USB_NAME_HERE) quick
assign letter (DISK_NAME)
It works for me after hours of search
brilliant thanks
Excelent guide, realy easy flash, thank you!
thanks for watching
Brilliant video. I was planning to buy this mobo and was confused about whether I needed an old cpu just to update the bios but this solved all my questions. Appreciate the the video!
glad it helped
Thanks for all the great info you provide! You have helped me thru so many different builds.
Thanks buddy, that really helped with my server, the language went chinese on me, and it was selected English, second time its done this, I need to get this up and running, its funny that my ASUS board I never have any problems with the B550-F its the most solid motherboard I have ever used. However this MSI Tomahawk B550 has been a real challenge to keep it running, there is always problems with it. MSI in general, and the RTX 3050 6GB GPU from MSI runs at 170 FPS and the ASUS RTX 3050 8GB runs at 550 FPS. Well I buy a lot of computer parts and build so many new devices a year. My new G17 ASUS gaming laptop has problems it will go fans on high when in sleep mode and i have to hold the power button to power it off if i had left anything plugged into the usb ports before it went to sleep. Thanks again, we need videos like this, all these new buggy electronics are getting difficult to diagnose and keep running. I still have my Lenevo legion 5 laptop and I should have not bought a new ASUS one because the Lenovo has no networking problems like the new ASUS. Its really hit or miss with these new computers and mixing parts. You never know what will be a problem, but Amazon has 30 day return policy so I buy all my stuff on there.
glad it helped
Thanks fir the video, I was really struggling with this!
Glad it helped!
Short and to the point. Great tutorial as I'll be ordering this board and a 5600X. Thanks a bunch!

Hi, did you still need to do the bios flash when buying recently? It says "amd Ryzen 5000 desktop ready" on the box. This seems to have been a lie, as I don't get no post :(. Now I'm going to try to flash.
@@kooltube100 Should receive my motherboard and other pc parts next week. I did saw another video however where the person had the same sticker as you had on the box 'Ryzen 5000 ready' or sth and he didn't need to flash. Seems to be random, but it seems like a good idea to flash regardless. Did flashing help and did you get it to post?
@@waisecc yeah I got it to work in the end. The problem I had wasn't the bios (atleast flashing didnt work initially). All I had to do is take out one of my ram sticks. I took out my second ram that was in slot 4 (suppose to fill slot 2 and 4 first). For some reason after this was done, the board posted! Then I set everything up on my screen (installed chipset etc....). turned off the system and put back the second ram. seems to be working great now.
@@kooltube100 Glad you've got it working :-)
Flash.......AAAAAHHHHHH. Another great PSA video Mike, apprecaited as always :-)
Thanks, Ugly Bob :-)
Super gut erklärt, habe noch kein besseres Video gefunden.
Super well explained, haven’t found a better video yet.
😊
thank you
Thanks for the help I tried a USB 2.0 formatted in FAT32 and couldn't get past 10 blinks, then I tried another older USB 2.0 and got the motherboard to do the new update I waited 10 minutes. I turned everything off and mounted (5600G processor) memories etc.
First time using UEFI and choosing boot to USB was simple.
My mistake was having installed the CD drivers for the motherboard "b550m mortar wifi" I don't advise installing by CD, I downloaded the MSI CENTER software and from there I just installed the drivers for all the motherboard and I finally managed to have the graphics recognized in the system. Install the latest version of win10 and updates.
awesome glad you got it sorted in the end, how is the system now? settled down nicely
@@mikesunboxing Yes for now it is stable, let's see how it behaves with future updates. Thanks again for the tutorial. :)

Greetings from Greece Mike, i bought this mobo but it seems she doesn't like me and or my 5800x3d...
Flashed the bios with 2 files (the latest one and the one from march 2022 that added support for the 5800x3d) the same process as in your video, no cpu on no peripherals etc and it booted, flashed from the usb and rebooted again (without the leds blinking. So i believe the flashing process is done (several times)
I install the cpu, his fan, 1 ram dimm and the graphics card and the system doesn't want to boot like the psu is out of the wall socket. No lights, no debug lights, no power in general.
So the next step was to search everywhere ant talk to the guys ftom msi.
I did everything and still nothing.
Today i received a replacement from the seller and it does the same thing.
-without cpu turns on
-with cpu no connection to the matrix detected
Any thoughts?
Thank you for your time Mike!

Hey nice video, this will help a lot in three months but I have a quick question. I'm thinking of buying this motherboard for my PC and the Ryzen 7 5800x as my CPU, but I saw that this Ryzen requires version 7C91vA7, and I was wondering if I have to install that version first and then move on to the most recent one, which is 7C91vAE, or Can I directly install the most recent one?
install the newest one
Great and simply to follow im getting this board tomorrow I dunno if I should try see if works out of the box or just flash straight up
being an older generation of board it is worth flashing it to get all the security and performance patches
@@mikesunboxing thank you
You can flash bios as long as the ram is not installed.
I have seen many people come to me, after a new install and first thing I do is pull out the ram and bios flash.
that is something i generally suggest now when asked

Hi there mike, how would I know if the BIOS flashback worked? Is it only when the LED stops blinking? How about a 2nd round of testing as in would you install the CPU, ram and hook to the monitor to see if all is well? Thanks a lot
yes test with cpu and gpu etc to make sure it posts before building the whole system
Question: if I already built the system before doing this, and I'm using a M.2 SSD from my previous system that had Windows installed onto it, would that get in the way of a proper BIOS Flash?
My motherboard still has the red CPU light after following all the steps on here, so I'm thinking either the USB I'm working with is no good or the M.2 with Windows might be getting in the way. The red LED on my motherboard also only flashed in the beginning for a bit then never lit up again I don't think, never saw a power cycle. I have so many things to trouble shoot, going to start later with removing the SSD and trying to flash again, but hoping I can soon finally have my first working PC that I put together myself!!
For context, my system:
-Ryzen 7 5800X (bought new)
-MSI B550 MAG Tomahawk (bought new)
-Founders 3070 (from previous system)
-16 GB RAM (previous system)
-an SSD from previous system
-EK AIO Elite 360 mm (bought new)
sounds like it isn't flashing, probably it doesn't like the USB drive or maybe the file on the drive
thanks mike great tutorial helped a lot

I’ve got an ASUS ROG Maximus V Gene motherboard. It’s 12 years old!! It will copy the original BIOS *before* flashing the (then) new BIOS. It’s as bullet proof as you get apart from dual BIOS. It was designed to allow GAMERS to mess about with BIOS settings to overclock to the limit and *still* get back to a default working board. Here we are today, 2023 and boards are crap and cost an absolute fortune and don’t even have the decency to give gamers what we had over a decade ago. Because they want you to *screw up* to make money out of you .
Mike I started to have my build I took off the fan took off the memory took off the CPU have it down to bare bones the board is inside the case power supply plugged into the board power to the CPU up on top turning on my power supply no power to the board I even unplugged the plugs up at the top of the case the power switch did work would like to board up that's how I first started it put in my flash drive pushed the button and just next to the flash button was a continuous red light when I had everything hooked up lit up fans the colors the RGB my cx650f brand new Corsair power supply worked working on it right now have it set up just like you did on your bench I don't think it should matter but my power supply not coming on lighting up the board everything was fine yesterday what do you think
sounds like you are doing things right, so not sure exactly what is happening there, maybe come on the discord chat and we can take a look at what is going on there
Very useful, looking to get this board with an AMD 5700G and would probably not have a loaner cpu lying around. So many thanks
My red light isn’t flashing, it just stays on the whole time. And my LEDs aren’t turning on when I do it either. Idk what’s wrong. Do I need to unplug my graphics card, hard drive and everything other than the 24 pin power connector and the 8 pin cpu connector?
Edit: I found the problem. I moved the whole file into the usb drive, I was only supposed to move the ROM file.
Glad you got it sorted out :-)

Will I need to do a flashback for the 7600?

you have CPU power cable plugged in but you dont use any CPU
yes it seems to be needed
Hi Mike, great video very detailed! I have one question though. When i flipped the psu switch on and pressed the flash bios button, the light turned on however after about 5 seconds it stopped flashing. The psu also did not turn on and the led on the motherboard didnt either! Is this normal or if not, then what does it mean?
that means it could not read the USB drive or the data file on it
Happened to me. After trying everything it was the USB... try using a different one
msi mag b550 would jump to CPU Red light on the motherboard after pressing bios flash button . The flash has a light would blink for 5 seconds then motherboard jumps to CPU RED Light .
Motherboard is empty nothing installed but 24pin power and 8 pin CPU power.
USB 2.0 Flash MBR Fat32 .
MSI.ROM only file on flash drive.
is the file unzipped?
so even for an older cpu like the ryzen 5 5600x we can update the motherboard to the latest bios? (7C91vAF released 2023-10-24).
Yes newer versions have stability and security patches
ok thanks !@@mikesunboxing
Great video! Although I'm not getting the board lighting up at all, followed all your steps :( got to the USB in the right port, power on and hold flash for 2 seconds, flashes red near USB but no lights on board at all, any ideas?
This is maybe easier to fix or at least advise if we can ask more questions and get direct answers, so feel free to join our Discord chat and we can go over it in more detail discord.gg/XtBTGQ6BDu

Mine just bricked itself using the windows method of bios update... now onto the USB method, I hope it works😭 I'm absolutely fuming!
sorry to hear that, it might need a cmos reset and battery removed for a while, this has worked for me once or twice
You should never use windows to update bios btw
Thanks
What If my BIOS Flash blinks at the same speed and my fan hasn’t started a cycle yet?
if it stays at the same speed and doesn't stop that is the system trying to read the USB or file and failing
Thank you. :)
You're welcome!
So I bought a pc from clx gaming and out this mother board in my system . I’m sure they would take care of any of those bios updates right? Paired it with a ryzen 7 5800x
if it works with your chip then they must have done it or it won't work
That was helpful thanks, I am just wondering since my build is completed. Is it safe to do this process with the CPU plugged or should I remove it? Because I installed a water cooling system.
should be fine with it in place, just remove the RAM and any bootable drives
@@mikesunboxing thanks for confirming that, but I tried one more thing before I start this process which was connecting display port instead of hdmi cable and it worked! Didn't know why is that although I plugged the hdmi in the graphics card. Only display port worked and windows installed successfully.
Wanted to share this information to anyone before updating the bios.
@@qahtanrashid3280 hey Qahtan, so you wanna say that ur 5000 series processor booted up without a bios flash, trough the display port? I bought 5600g and a b550 tomahawk, so I guess I might try it also.
@@SirJohnsonP hello Jonny, if you have the exact same build it shoud run fine without updating anything. I also figured something. During booting up my pc the display wasn’t on and one of the reasons I figured out is the power adapter I was using is not designed to handle 750w for unknown reason. So the pc is on but with limited power and this was a reason as well. It drives me so crazy until I figured it out. Once power adapter is chaged pc worked immediately.
Troubleshooting pc is very difficult sometimes.

Hello brother, I left my LIKE for the great video, I was looking for this, but I would like if you can clear me a doubt, like I bought an MSI B550M TOMAHAWK , but I have to update the bios to be able to use my 5000 generation processor an R5 5600x, I also saw it on other channels and they all did pretty much the same thing, after downloading the file they all change the name to: MSI.ROOM through the flash bios makes the update, until then blz. The question is: when updating the new bios is it necessary to always change the file name to MSI.ROOM? This is my debt. Thank you in advance for the answer.
yes the file name is needed for the system to recognise it, any other file names will be ignored
Ahhh so Im doing my build and the bios flash won't shut off. I believe i inappropriately did it when I first started my build. Plugged in the motherboard, the psu, but did not connect the 8 pin cpu connector. When flashing the red light stopped blinking (but stayed a solid red) and I assumed that I was done and commenced to complete my build.
Now I'm finished and my monitors are getting nothing from my PC and the ez diagnostic light is on for the CPU. I'm at a loss as to what to do. I've tried properly flashing it with all my components in but even after 20+min the red bios indicator won't stop flashing
i did a live stream on how to recover the bios after a bad flash it might be worth a look, or just try and reflash the bios
Mike I got a quick question I used to build but my last build was probably about 10-15 years ago how things have changed anyhow I bought matching sticks of RAM 2 8 gig sticks stuck them in have the AMD 5800 X in the b550 tomahawk motherboard I do not have a video card thought maybe I would get it on the HDMI on the board but 5800x does not have integrated graphics... But when I boot the system up I do have a dram red error light on... On the motherboard could this be because I have not looked at my BIOS at all because I can't see it on a monitor and there's things that I need to change on the ram this is 3200...2 8gb sticks... I hope that may be the problem if you could let me know would be great... William
when you get the gpu you should be able to get in and change the ram settings
Thanks 👌
Welcome 😊
Mike the B550 tom has 2 LAN ports do you think if you connected another cat6 lead to the extra port & bridge it you could double the download speeds? Most modems that are sent out by the provider these days are are for household use & have up to 4 LAN ports which means if you connect 2 cat6 leads to a motherboard that has 2 LAN ports like the B550 tom it may be possible to double your internet speeds in theory...
i don't know to be honest, it might work like that, but there are a lot of factors involved and routing might be an issue as i would think even though you could maybe bridge them the packets are all going to the same destination?
I once tried to "RAID" my internet but that failed with some sort of error. Today's lan adaptor are way faster than modem, so it wont make disfference in speed, but maybe in bandwidh..
Hi Mike! i know this is an old video, but can you tell me if i can flash the latest version BIOS even if the board as the first version? Im gonna use it with a Ryzen 5 5600x so I need to update de BIOS before use it, thank you :)
Yes, you can
@@mikesunboxing Thanks for the answer! I´ll do it today then :)
I can only see 1 red light on the other side of where the USB stick is. Haven’t seen any rgb on the motherboard as yet. Could it not possibly read the USB stick?
that is a distinct possibility
@@mikesunboxing thanks, indeed I had the wrong format for the USB. Got it done now. Thanks
@@TinTin_57 Glad to hear 🙂
