hi i have a question im building my first pc i bought a msi z790 edge wifi the box says it supports 13th gen will i still need to update before building my pc?
@@winglover32 hard to say for sure. The board may support it but need updates to the BIOS. What you can do is look on the support page for the site and see if the CPU you are going to be using is supported and what BIOS is required. It should be under the compatibility section of the support page for your motherboard. I know for mine it is under the Results column and will show a zip file name which that name shows the BIOS version.
You are the only dude that got this whole process right, no one else ever stated I had to change the name of the file to MSI.ROM I wasted 2 hours of my life because other people and MSI are TROLLING pc builders.
Seconded. No one explained that to me and after hours of trying I stumbled across this video, the fans sound into action for the first time and I already knew we was on to a winner. Cheers
No one trolled you lol, Your trying to flash your BOIS either without a CPU or without a compatible CPU, the MSI Video and other videos are designed to teach people who want to Update BOIS using already compatible software, Hence why when the do it the Download on the same PC where they are updating.
You included some crucial steps other guides left out, pulling the file to the top level and renaming it, keeping the PC turned off while doing it, letting it sit for a bit. In the middle of my update now. Thanks for a thorough guide!
I cant believe MSI even leaves out those steps, been stuck for a couple days now and watched a lot of videos and articles then this guy comes in like a boss. nicely done making a perfect video +respect
Wow im so glad I found this video before attempting it. Im still confused though about whether to power on my pc via psu to do the first bios update? I have everything in the tower fully put together, I just haven't turned it on yet cuz im worried about messing something up so I wanna get my steps in order and give myself best odds at doing it right first time. Should I start the pc at least once b4 doing my bios update? Do I turn my psu power on when doing bios update cuz I got everything connected so im confused about that.
I never realize you could do this, this is really a lifesaver for when you get motherboards that may not support the newest CPUs that need a BIOS update but you don't have another older CPU to put in there to get the update. I got a brand new MSI motherboard for my new build and I did this exact same procedure thanks to this video and everything updated and worked perfectly.
Just wanted to say thanks for this guide! Very helpful as I was going through this process for the first time. Had to use a second USB stick, as the first one didn't work, but once I did that it was smooth sailing!

Dude!!!! Thank you! After toiling over my MOBO manual and other online posts, your video finally told me the info I needed. Everything else I looked at left out/didn't explain in detail the need to pull the file to the top directory or the need to not turn the PC on before you press the Flash BIOS button. You are an absolute lifesaver. Wish I could give you more than just a like and a sub.
Thank you for this video! It had been quite a few years since I built a PC and I was getting all turned around with the tons of forum posts out there. I'm 'flashed' and up and running now. And you are 'liked' and 'subscribed'!
Omg I had no idea the PC was supposed to be off when you press the BIOS flash button. I've been pulling my hair out the past 2 days trying to troubleshoot this. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much! Better than MSI's video on the topic. First time building a PC and didn't want to bother with BIOS by the time I got everything up and running. Or at least not as much.
Bought a new motherboard, MSI Pro Z690-a WiFi DDR4, and after all assembly a red burning LED on the mourning board. After a lot of searching, I came to you very helpful video. After seeing, done as you describe and the problems were solved. I never thought of this. Certainly not with just the motherboard.🥰
Not too shabby of a video. I am building out a new PC using the MSI MPG Z790 Carbon and will be using an I9=13900 Raptor (13th Gen) CPU. Even though the board states 12/13th Gen ready, I decided to flash the BIOS after looking that the BIOS update frequency on MSI's support page for the motherboard, every couple of months. Typically motherboards don't have the latest firmware revision, and depending the particular scenario, it may or may not matter if you first flash it before inserting the CPU, RAM, etc. The only time I would think it would necessary is if you're installing a new gen of CPU, then having the current BIOS revision would matter. I just put the MB on the box, hooked up the motherboard power cable, and only used one CPU power cable, even though there are 2 CPU power connect ports -- I'll use both when I'm assembling it into my tower case. A few points to mention: - I used an older USB 2.0 thumb drive that lights up when being accessed that way I can tell if the motherboard flashing process is accessing it. A USB 3.0 would probably work too. Make sure to format it with FAT32. - After downloading the appropriate BIOS update file from MSI's website, make sure you Extract All (uncompress) the .zip file. Then I would recommend to look in File Explorer at the View settings tab, and make sure Details, File name extensions are ticked. - Fully rename the uncompressed BIOS update file to MSI.ROM and copy it to the now formatted, empty USB drive. - There is a USB port labeled on my motherboard for MFLASH which is where I inserted the USB drive into. - I powered on the PSU, verified the motherboard had power and then pressed the labeled Flash BIOS button. It started blinking and I also noticed the USB drive was being accessed. - Ultimately the LED for the Flash BIOS button stopped blinking and went off. Total time took around 6 to 7 minutes of time. I won't know for 100% certainty if it it worked until I get my system fully assembled and a monitor hooked up -- still waiting on the CPU to show up, but I'm assuming the processes did work.
well, even if this doesnt work, youve earned a sub. ive tried for 2 days to get this process to work, found your video by chance, and youre the only one ive had tell me to lay the file out that way, everyone else just says unzip it and rename it, not pull the individual bios file and rename it. and when i hit the button, it flashed like always, but the file transfer light on the usb came on this time and a diag light on the board came on thats never come on before. cheers man, thanks

This was a very helpful video thank you! For me, after the bios button stopped blinking and the MOBO went thru a couple power cycles...some lights and fans continued to stay on and never shutoff.

First build. Was running into issues. This vid helped me realize that the zip was not the file I was suppose to rename... I needed to extract it first. Thank you!!!
Belated thank you for this video. Same mobo and I was having some trouble going off a different video. Followed your process steps by the letter and got everything to work. Thank you and subscribed.
@Kleebz Tech thanks again. Quick note, it rebooted my mobo so ended up flashing the bios again because I thought it should turn it off after the flash. So I reflashed it again, saw the light flashing, saw the reboot, and left it running it several mins before turning the psu off. Will build the rig tonight with the kiddo and report back if I run into any issues.
Just be certain that when it reboots it's not doing some other sort of update. I have run into cases where after flashing the BIOS it goes into another update process on boot before getting to the bios.
Thank you so much, I bought a msi tomahawk used and it din't work, after the bios uptade it works properly. But the first time I did the update without rename the file it didn't works, after watching your video i renamed the file and all was good. Thank you
Cant remember if this was in the video but i changed the allocation to 4096 for my flash drive, it did not work before this. Thanks for the quick tutorial!
I have tried multiple different allocation options and doesn't seem to be a factor as far as I can tell. Sometimes just a reformat is enough for it to work.
Sent my original mobo back for bios boot loop and was nervous about doing this to the new one (MSI MPG X570s edge wifi) - 5 hours no progress; most if not all post left out a few critical parts that you included in your video. Clear instructions, although slightly different from mine - still great. Used a friends computer to get the bios update, followed your instruction and I’m now mid way through the update (at least I think). It stated itself up after the 3 second press followed but the flashes on the bios button, about 5 mins and it shut down, but booted back up. I’m leaving it as is until it does something else lol. still having boot issues tho, specifically cpu ez debug led. Hong cpu isn’t toast all of a sudden, would be my luck tho 😅
@@SolidNatePhones RMA the board if possible - I’d do the same for your cpu - it’s usually a pretty accurate indication the cpu itself is the issue, before you go tinkering and potentially cause more damage I’d consider trying a totally different cpu altogether - you can sometimes call the manufacturer and explain to them the situation, hopefully they send you one of their low end cpus to test for free - also if make sure to tell them to update the bios for you before sending back the new/repaired mobo
Thanks, this helped a lot. Especially when my USB drive did not work. Tried flashing three times and just got flashing for a few seconds then everything turned off. Tried another USB stick and it work perfectly. Cheers!
Really appreciate the video - thank you:) I never updated the bios before I inserted all the components (including a new 13th gen i7) on my new Z690 Edge WIFI DDR 4 and keep getting a red CPU light blinking. Could not updating the bios be the issue? If so, should I remove all the components before I do the update? At the end of your video you say to not turn on the power if all the components are on the motherboard. Cheers
You could look on the support page to find out if that CPU was not supported by early versions and might give you a clue but that is a good possibility. You do not need to remove the components. Just turn on the power supply but do not boot the computer at any point. You will just have the power supply in the on position so when you push the Flash BIOS button it will do the update.
I have an MSI MPG X670E CARBON WIFI motherboard. I have the CPU, Ram, unformatted new m.2 hard drive, and case fans attached. I followed your instructions, and when I pressed the Flash Bios Button, it began flashing, along with the light on the USB drive, and all of the case fans lit up, and began spinning. After a few minutes, the Flash Bios Button stopped flashing, as did the USB drive, but everything else is still on, including the yellow and red lights that are on during bootup, and there is a C5 code showing on the board. I'll leave it alone for an hour or two to see if anything changes.
Hello, This was a great tutorial and process explaining everything but I have came up with a problem so basically I used the usb I got with my motherboard and that usb made the motherboard turn on and there’s a red light flashing where the USB ports are I can see it through the side kind of so I’m not sure if it’s not working or not but after 7 minutes the lights all turn off and then turn back on except for the flashing red lights and my motherboard still has a red dot next to cpu so I’m not sure what to do now as well as I tried another usb that I got from Best Buy and I asked them if it would work with my pc and they said it would but when I tried it sadly didn’t so now I’m very confused on what to do. I was wondering if you could give me a quick explanation on what I should do if your not sure I might have to take it to Best Buy, the reason I’m saying Best Buy is that my cousin works there and she said that they have a very good team that’s helpful with stuff like this so yea. But I don’t wanna keep spending money so I just wanna Finnish this myself.
Does the USB light flash? I prefer USB with a light so I can tell if it is being accessed. If it only flashes for a few seconds then stops usually means it didn't like what it sees.
@@KLEEBZTECH I finally did it lol. I used 6 different USB drives and it actually finally worked with a micro SD card into an adapter wtf lol. Thanks for your replies and guidance. You’ve helped tons of people. Edit: and yeah the flashing was exactly what you mentioned. When the light stayed solid it usually meant it failed.
Struggling with this process right now. MSI B650 Tomahawk Wifi and AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D. I was warned that I would most likely need to update the bios for compatibility with the CPU. Following these steps precisely, repeatedly, all I get is a white blinking light that never seems to end. Goes well past the 5-7 minute estimated timeframe. I’ve also got the red CPU and yellow DRAM LED Debug lights lit up on my motherboard.
@@nigelphillips7454 As I previously mentioned, you will want to get the bios update from the support page for your product. Believing that something is the right one is telling me that is not what you are doing. You could mess something up if not using the correct one. And please next time it is best to post a new comment instead of replying to an unrelated one since I am not likely to see it.
I noticed that there are other videos that bring up MBR vs GPT for the formatting, but does it actually matter on modern setups of Windows 10 and later?
Unfortunately, I could not use the FLASH button on the back of the mainboard. I had to take a USB stick and connect it to the computer (format it to FAT32), then I downloaded the file from the MSI website under BIOS files. I unzipped the zip folder and loaded it onto the USB stick without renaming it. Then I went into the BIOS under M-Flash and selected my USB stick with the file on it. (MSI B550 Gaming Plus)
It is a test bench. You can find them in many places like Amazon. They are designed to make it easy to work on systems without needing to be in a case.
Can you update the bios if you have already installed the processor and don't want to go through the trouble of uninstalling it? Does it matter if the processor is installed or not?
It can be done either way. Just be sure not to boot up the computer at any point. The power supply needs to be switched into the on position. When you press the button it will power up the board somewhat.
Worked perfectly now let's hope the infamous red cpu amber ezdebug goes away. Otherwise I'm stuck with this 2grand new build till MSI tech support is open
Followed the procedure to the letter. I only got flashing lights on the board and the USB drive for maybe twenty seconds. I didn't want to disturb anything just in case it was still processing the bios update but just not signaling it was doing so. I left it alone for about 10-15 minutes before turning the power off and unplugging everything. With that relatively brief signal from the process could something have gone wrong?
Heya, nice vid! It is specific and yet to the point, which I like. I'm thinking of building a pc with an MSI MAG H670 Tomahawk Wifi DDR4 (it has a Flash BIOS button based on the manual). So once it updates to the latest BIOS using this version it should be able to run a 13th Gen CPU out of the box right? Asking because I'm worried I might run into some issues where a 12th Gen CPU might still be required (and I don't have access to one unless I buy it). Some motherboards (like the Gigabyte B660M Aorus Elite AX DDR4 BIOS version F20) requires an Intel VMD Driver update, otherwise the system might crash with the 13th Gen CPU, which isn't cool.
If you want to be sure I would look on their support page for that motherboard and see if any of the BIOS updates added support for 13th Gen. If it does you should be good.
Do you have to do it this way.. or can you have all this downloaded onto the flash drive "as shown" and use it in the new motherboard usb input as your starting it up for the first time?
thank you! So it will be fine to isntall the unsupported cpu in the motherboard, complete the pc build and do this after? It won't do any damagae to the motherboard or cpu?
Should be good. Although I personally would do the update before if you can. Only reason being is if you have problems doing it it and the motherboard needs to be returned because it is defective or something you won't have to disassemble the PC
Great video - but scary, as my USB drive doesn't have an activity LED. Apart from the use case when the BIOS needs to be flashed to support the CPU, is there any reason not to use a CPU + the M-Flash UI in BIOS instead? Thank you.
Currently building pc for second time brought second hand i7 13700k red cpu light on msi z790-p wifi ddr4 has stayed on usb ports don’t work except for flash bios button is this a motherboard, bios or cpu problem
When it comes to choosing the latest update, you are talking about the latest non-beta update, right? For my motherboard, there are two betas that have been released sooner but the latest non-beta update was released back in '19.
Usually I would avoid beta unless there is specifically something in that update you need. Usually you don't need to update the BIOS unless there's a specific reason
What are some ways to troubleshoot? I’ve tried several different flash drives pretty confident they are all formatted properly my bios light just keeps flashing I even left one on for 5 hours to see if

Couldnt be simpler or clearer. Thanks.
You're welcome!
@@KLEEBZTECH same flash drive and formatted each time, could be just a hiccup with this drive
Probably. But it does show how picky these things are.
Very helpful thanks man!👌🏻
Glad it helped!
Just ordered This msi mpg z690 Force wifi with i7-13700kf hope i Make This work👌 Nice video
Thanks. Good luck with the build.
Good Video. All these steps are also explained in the Motherboard Manual.
Manual? Who reads manuals? 😂
Better than MSI's guide, thank you!
You're welcome!
Did u figure this out? I'm having the cpu led light issue and nothing on monitor
@@SolidNatePhones nah unfortunately my cpu seems to be toast; not sure that this works or doesn’t - sorry brotha
Cheers!
Thanking you for your valuable information
Thanks so much@@KLEEBZTECH. After about 5 1/2 minutes, the BIOS update took care of the red CPU light and was good to go:)
i like the frame that you using can you share where i can get one!
thank you
I have an MSI MPG X670E CARBON WIFI motherboard.
Excellent guide thx! I have the same board!
Welcome. Have not used this one yet. Seems like a decent board.
Solid advice. Thank you.
You bet!
In the middle of the process now. Best video by far. I actually have the bios flash light on my MB, will that turn off once it’s done? Cheers
Most likely although I have found all motherboards can behave slightly different.
@@KLEEBZTECH yeah I think mine keeps failing because I can’t find a usb drive that works. Light just stays on forever
Perfectguide, thanks a lot!
You're welcome!
Appreciate you, bud!
Happy to help.
Thank you. Realy helped me.
I’ve also got the red CPU and yellow DRAM LED Debug lights lit up on my motherboard.
hey my guy, thank you so much! one question, can i leave the cpu in the socket for flashing the bios?
Yes.
@@nigelphillips7454 As I previously mentioned, you will want to get the bios update from the support page for your product. Believing that something is the right one is telling me that is not what you are doing. You could mess something up if not using the correct one. And please next time it is best to post a new comment instead of replying to an unrelated one since I am not likely to see it.
super helpful thank you so much
You're welcome!
most complete guide on this topic. MSI may hide their video and hire you
Thanks so much! Saved my board
I found this very helpful. Now give me a year to save up for the 4090, mobo, and cpu so I can remember how to do this process 🤣
I would love a 4090... 😀
@KLEEBZTECH Wait till Q4 this year brotha. We will have our chance for an adorable and bad ass gpu
Hey, great video and it is very specific with every step described, i just wanna know should i connect both CPU power to the motherboard ?
Probably should only need one to do the update.
@@KLEEBZTECH Thank you very much for ur answer
This is great!! Thank you
My z690 none of the USB ports worked. I took it back got the z790 and used this video again and worked
Well that would definitely make updating difficult. Lol. Hopefully didn't waste too much time figuring it out.
Hey! Whenever I press the button, my pc turns on for about 10 seconds and then turns off and starts the upgrade. It’s been about 30 minutes.
in my case, i needed to clear CMOS and remove the bios batterie before the update for the process to work
unlucky me I have the Z790-I and it does not have a flash button or drive signaling where the flash should go.
(MSI B550 Gaming Plus)
yes it was helpful👍🏻 Tank You
Nice video, where can we buy your motherboard openframe case ?
@@KLEEBZTECH Great, thanks!
Great video, thank u!
Do you have to do it this way.. or can you have all this downloaded onto the flash drive "as shown" and use it in the new motherboard usb input as your starting it up for the first time?
just tried this, its an agonizing wait for the bios to update 😅
@@KLEEBZTECH ok, I haven't installed anything yet, but will do it exactly as you've done in your video first. Thanks again!
Great video - but scary, as my USB drive doesn't have an activity LED. Apart from the use case when the BIOS needs to be flashed to support the CPU, is there any reason not to use a CPU + the M-Flash UI in BIOS instead? Thank you.
Not really if that is what you prefer. I prefer this method myself.
@@KLEEBZTECH Thank you.
😲my Bios keep on restarting & Restarting! Why & how to update Bios ! Video demo have ?
